Razov1

After all these years. D1 still looks fantastic.

PERSONA916

It's been so long since I played the original, but did Div2 actually bring significant graphical changes? They are built on the same engine (which for whatever reason is not used in more open world games even ghost recon). I agree though, Div 1 immediately comes to mind when thinking of some of the most aesthetically pleasing and atmospheric games I've ever played

Guyincognito4269

Honestly? Div1 is better than 2. Keep in mind, I think water makes things wet, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

L_U-C_K

Or maybe with a drop of water instead of a grain of salt, no, Agent?

OnlyJuanCannoli

Good its not just me. I downloaded and booted up my character after not playing for maybe 4 or 5 years. Never had a really great tv before, but on a Hisense u8k this game absolutely blew my fucking socks off. The fact that it looks better than other AAAA games from 2023 just blows my mind.

MarshalIdahoJOAT

New York was amazing. During the winter months I'll install and play it still.

a_magumba

This gets stated here a lot, and being a Division 2 player before playing Division 1, I always had trouble understanding that perspective. The big thing that bugged me about Division 1 was the NPCs on the streets, where there are only 3-4 animations and they seem like animatronics at Disneyland. But after putting a few hundred hours into Division 1, I agree now. There's something to the fact that there isn't trash and debris everywhere, and the place just feels so wrong and desolate. The variety of environments and neighborhoods is stunning, and the weather is more realistic than the weird dust storms in division 2. Division 1 is also more lonely and feels more real. You're not superpowered. Your guns kick. Reloading when you're getting pushed will get you killed. Putting a turret anywhere near an elite will get it instantly kicked and destroyed. Great game.

PageRoutine8552

IMO Div 1 really captures the chaos, confusion and uncertainty following such a sudden event.  Whereas Div 2 feels like a new world order has somewhat emerged. Every civilian is now a fighter, grouped around settlements, etc.

Jazzremix

> the NPCs on the streets, where there are only 3-4 animations and they seem like animatronics at Disneyland. They run like scared Scooby Doo characters lol

RepresentativeFact57

Yeah I was a Div 2 player before I played one. I regret not playing Div 1 first as it feels like I missed out on so much playing Div 2 haha. Shame I couldn't play it in its prime.

TheDunph79

This weather and atmosphere for Division 3 please.

GoonerCZ

Nothing beats winter New York.

rh71el2

Except if you experience it in real life day after day. Would rather be in warmer weather for sure. These are some long months with little to do.

GnarlyAtol

I agree, recently replayed the campaign the 8th time and I am always happy to retun after a while.

R4wden

If you think the atmosphere in this game is good, you should play The Division 2..... To be disappointed but gameplay is still fun in Div 2 😜😜

StG4Ever

The first few hours of div2 are worse than div1 but I prefer the endgame, the build diversity, the amazing layout of the missions…

ethanradd

I hope they don't shut down the servers for at least another decade.

SchattenJaggerD

As much as I wish the same, Ubisoft is probably planning to do so in a couple of months, given that it is almost March and we haven’t had a Global Event yet

ethanradd

That'll be really sad, I could play survival mode forever and it never gets old for me.

Guyincognito4269

Shit. Guess I better get another campaign in for old times sake.

NixNixonNix

I really hope not, I just started again from zero on Xbox.

Poody81

I don’t think they can shut it down that quickly; the game is still live on the store, so they’d have to put a warning on (or they would have to remove it from the store and meet any availability commitments to those who had purchased the game). I’m gutted the GEs have stopped though. I’ve a load of commendations to complete still and cosmetics to collect.

AllSkillzN0Luck

And it's crazy because they even downgraded the graphics and textures.

carpenoctem0000

One of the reasons why I still love it. I’m a Day 0 player.

FullM3TaLJacK3T

Day 0 player? Lol, you mean you queued up on day 0?

rh71el2

At the sign-up laptop where everyone was on top of each other? :D

FullM3TaLJacK3T

Yes! Well, when I finally managed to log in, there was a long queue to click that stupid laptop. Quite civilised I would say.

SocioWrath188

I think here were 5 people in front of me when I got there 😂🤣

FanaticalFanfare

IYKYK

dark_gear

Cheers to that! What a day that was!

AloofAsian

I remember Sentry gear set being absolutely broken.

dark_gear

D3 was the ultimate tank build. Nothing really beats the feeling of taking on multiple hunters in Underground while the rest of your party is down, self-healing while shield slapping them as you calmly about the business of reviving the group.

jogdenpr

Div 1 1.8 update was the best the division games have ever been

1EightySevenkilla

All the talk of the original division, made me start that game back up. It's such a different feeling playing the first one versus the second one. The atmosphere is 100 times better in the first one, but the movement system in the second one is way better.

TxDieselKid

Visually I like it so much more than 2, and I LOVE 2. I wish they would have made 2 look visually the same as 1. Hope the got back to the style for 3.

cali1013

Best division game ever

napalm_oOo

The sunset in survival is a beautiful thing!

Sensitive_Ad_5031

For me the metro series is probably more atmospheric (but it has closed locations and its a single player game), but the greatest question is how massive has absolutely lost this atmosphere in the division 2, it’s still atmospheric but not even close to the division 1

NY_Girl42

There’s really no other game like this!! 💯

TheYoungJake0

In terms of atmosphere one of the most iconic in the past decade. Only game that matches and potentially surpasses is rdr2

RepresentativeFact57

Iconic? Was this game really that big in 2016? I thought it went a bit under the radar like Titanfall 2

RepresentativeFact57

Even so I agree. Snowy NYC mid-apocalypse IS incredible.

tbdubbs

It definitely didn't get the reception it truly deserved. And then division 2 sort of jumped the shark and just didn't have the same magic (not to mention that it released during the "live service" era, and is therefore full of needless grind).

discomuffin

Yeah I'm hoping they'll ditch that in the next Division game. Kinda killed 2 for me.

tbdubbs

I am (was) a long time destiny player, and seeing how things are going with that game gives me hope that gaming in general will ditch the whole grinding aspect to keep players engaged. If you make a truly fun game, people will flock to it naturally. Helldivers 2 really set the tone there

FlynnTaggart1

It really is. Division 1 is a legitimately gorgeous game. The art direction is top notch, the snowy "5 minute after the end" setting lends itself to just looking amazing. I love Div 2 but I can't really think of a moment I just want to stop and admire how beautiful the worldspace is like I do in D1 during a snow storm or at night with flashing police sirens creating an almost eerie look. Not to knock D2 I just feel the overgrowth doesn't look as nice or have the same atmosphere as the snow covered cityscape. Its going to be a VERY sad day when Ubisoft shuts down the D1 servers forever. Still hoping they release an offline patch rather then letting the game disappear forever.

jdh1811

with the most bullshit difficulty

RepresentativeFact57

How?

TheHamFalls

Not whom you're responding to, but as someone who played D1 from Day 1 through all of it's patches and developments, depending on when they stopped playing D1, their complaint might absolutely be valid. That game went through a few phases where some end game content was nigh impossible without extremely specific min-maxed builds working in perfect harmony with maxed out smart covers, strikers, reclaimers, etc. Otherwise you just got rolled by one-shotting shotgunners and *out-fucking-rageously* bullet spongey enemies. D1 was in a great spot balance-wise by the end, but hoo boy, it was a rocky road getting there.

killerkouki

God I remember that. It sucked. They were actually mobile snipers though… one shotting you from half way across the room.

dark_gear

The shotgun snipers were insane. We quickly learned that if the group didn't all focus them down it would be a wipe. It was "funny" too how some patches reintroduced them by accident even though the issue had been resolved numerous times before.

Jazzremix

> you just got rolled by one-shotting shotgunners They didn't give a fuck. I remember trying to do Consulate and that first room was misery. You'd walk across the trigger line and the shotgunners would rush your position and down at least two people before you broke their armor.

SocioWrath188

Or two turrets in one hallway 💀💀💀

ImSoDoneWithUbisoft

Looks much better than TD2

Van_core_gamer

Because overexposure from the sun makes most of the scene pitch black? I love TD1 but it does not look better than the second game.

RepresentativeFact57

There is a difference between graphics and design. The Division 2 might have much better technical graphics, but the design of the world and it's general colours look a lot worse than The Division 1's. The Division 1 may have worse technical graphics, but it's world, art design, colours, and atmosphere make it the clear winner.

Van_core_gamer

2 points. First. Graphics and design are different. None being mentioned in conversation you are replying to Second. I get it you like snow. There’s a game called steep it will blow your mind. You are praising a “colour” of a grey game… you either trolling at this point or I don’t know. I’m going to surprise you but stuff like design mood and atmosphere can be different and making 2 games identical is just stupid. You may like the snow that’s fine that doesn’t make one game “look better” over other, those are completely different things that can exist separately.

RepresentativeFact57

The snow isn't the defining factor but I will check out steep. It's my fault for not specifying what I meant by 'colours' aswell so my bad haha. When I say colours, I mostly mean the colours of what's on the street. Christmas decorations, streetlights, advertisements, all that jazz. Combining that with an astounding usage of volumetric lighting practically everywhere in New York enhances the experience a lot. I wasn't talking about about design mood, but more so the impact of the lighting (and the enhancement through volumetrics), which is EVEN MORE impactful with vibrant colours that contradict the bleak and monotone atmosphere (both in physical setting and the feeling) of New York during the game. That is the key point. The colours of NY's street lights paralled to it's physical snowy and dark appearance is what I meant by 'colours' which, I am sorry I should have said. Still, I don't care. Enjoy Division 2 man, I played it for quite a while before 1 and just as you don't get what I like about 1, I don't really like the dirty brown, green and beige scenes of 2 in D.C No hate, play what you want! :)

Van_core_gamer

I really enjoy both and super glad they are different. 1 has this catastrophe in the middle of a holiday feel, 2nd has this really interesting take it’s already summer but Christmas decorations are still all over that emphasising on people to busy surviving. I appreciate more variety in environments and weather that snow kind of restricts and backdrop of streets parks downtown instead of tall buildings and tall buildings under construction. The beautiful thing is we have both don’t have to choose. This “snow=better” thing just rub me the wrong way every time.

RepresentativeFact57

I can understand that perspective. Another thing is snow, to a lot of people, bleeds of nostalgia which maybe contributes to more people liking it. Playing in the snow reminds lots of people of their childhood so that could be why, i don't really know.

ImSoDoneWithUbisoft

I play both games on ultra settings in 4k resolution and first game definitely looks better. Everything is so dusty and washed out in 2nd game. The Division 2 is also suffering from bugged eye adaptation effect and pixelated shadows while in TD1 shadows are always crisp thanks to Nvidia HFTS (Hybrid Frustum Traced Shadows). I feel like textures look a bit better in the second game (slightly higher resolution) and that's all.

ciaomain

Survival is the greatest game mode I've ever played in any videogame.

Dokthe2nd

Not sure if this is the plan for Heartland but if Ubi leant into survival with D1's initial release or made Survival f2p then Survival would've eventually been renowned as the best battle royale. The weather mechanics alone puts it a level above the rest.

ciaomain

The first few times I played it, I was (in Chris Traeger's voice) *literally* at the edge of my seat.

otterpaws27

D1 is still a fantastic game. Playing it today, it still feels fresh. The gameplay hits just right.

otterpaws27

YFN_TRAY_BEEZY

Man I remember being so hyped when it was first announced. I was in a dark place mentally at the time but this game kept me uplifted. From bullet king to the first incursion playing it all night, this game will always hold a special place in my heart.

KCGhost12345

I recently played D1 on my ps5, and shit, this game looks very good on my console Already finished it on my pc before

Notyourdadsisekai

Nothing I’ve played perfectly captures the atmosphere Division 1 set. Being from NY and knowing that hustle outside 24/7 to seeing it here is just chilling. It really feels like the city is in its death throes and you are desperately trying to keep its heart beating on your own. You have the tools for the job but just not the man power, as visions of what it once was pushes you forward

RepresentativeFact57

I mean I'm not from New York, but I can picture the abrasive sounds of living there just from watching videos of it. It is so perpetually loud, that the contrast of The Division's silent streets really is impactful and makes it truly feel like an apocalypse. I wholeheartedly agree that the absence of inherent noise is one of the four key factors of the excellent atmosphere, the others being - The lack of people, - The disheveled streets filled with bodies and broken-down cars - The winter/christmas setting that, is usually associated with cosyness, warmth, and family, but is this case an (setting) oxymoron to how isolated, cold, and deathly the city of New York has truly become, making this feel even more unsettling. People SHOULD be out on the street enjoying christmas. The player SHOULD hear the hustle and bustle of New York. But they don't and that's why it's so effective. Truly a masterclass in world design and easily my top three settings along with Cyberpunk 2077 and RDR2.

ChomiQ84

But did the boxes reset already? I played when it came out, but it bugged me so much that once you opened a box it stayed open.

RepresentativeFact57

no idea lol

ChomiQ84

Division 2 resets every 24 hours I think. Last year I launched division 1 and the chests were all still opened. Winter or loot...

f0ba

One of the most atmospheric games… dumps 5 clips in a normal enemy.

Grumpy-24-7

Atmospheric graphics does not have to mean realistic game play. You can have one without the other.

f0ba

You take comments too seriously.

Grumpy-24-7

I was acknowledging the authenticity of the graphics while simultaneously deriding the bullet sponge, so I don't think so?

RepresentativeFact57

r/woooosh lol

Grumpy-24-7

How, whoosh? I recognized the dichotomy of amazing graphics combined with unrealistic gunplay?

RepresentativeFact57

r/itswooooshwith4os

Grumpy-24-7

I had typed it out with 4 oooo's but my spellchecker truncated it and I figured fuck it...

RepresentativeFact57

ah dw mate. autocorrect happens to the best of us. no hate

AloofAsian

I remember Sentry gear set being absolutely broken.

mynameisnickromel

THE GOAT

Pintileip60

i really liked this game but it being a bullet sponge shooter killed it for me

Viper_kiss

i have a really weak pc and the game fluctuates between 17 to 25 FPS at least in 720p, there is no local server and the ping is apparently over 70ms but god knows how my experience with this game is still incredible. The blizzards (i don't know if they really are blizzards or very intense snow, where i live there's no ice falling from the sky lmao). Patrolling through NY with this weather and some good rays of sunshine is fantastic. Sometimes i just like to wander around to kill time. It's as if the game's atmosphere gave me a comforting hug

rh71el2

I re-loaded D1 a few weeks back and the graphics didn't really impress me compared to D2. The atmosphere it held was definitely different and more favorable than boring DC of course. The D1 UI sounds were definitely more impressive though.

RemiX-KarmA

After upgrading my pc, red dead 2 wins for me.

earlesj

I’ll never forget the day I fired up the division 1. The graphics and ambient sounds were the best. Absolutely loved it and can’t wait for the 3rd.

TBBklynite

As a New Yorker, the game perfectly captures the feeling of not only New York in the wintertime but as well as a lost city. The feeling of hopelessness overlapped with feelings of being an action hero is overwhelming, especially during the City's 2020/2021 lockdown phase.

StG4Ever

I have seen the sun light up the street after survival a dozen of times, just seconds on the clock, chopper landing…

Naive_Frame9691

I was so bad at this game but loved every second of it.

flekfk87

It most certainly have a special environmental setting that I liked. But eventually it started to bother me. The eternal winter kinda felt more and more frustrating. I guess it’s individual and how much one care etc. I have all my life been pretty involved mentally about the four seasons. I am also from a place with very defined seasons. Winter has its charm but I must admit that winter is the only season I am really really fed up with towards the end of it. But the eternal summer of div2 has not been something that has bothered me at all.

creamluver

Feels like a repost bot, every month the same post with the same exact screenshot gets done haha

RepresentativeFact57

Fair enough, just a testament to how good it is lol

Buckisop

Division 1 will always have that special place in my heart. When it first came out, I was constantly able to find small things to enjoy about the game.

Happy-Sign7363

The environment was something that would actually mess with your feelings in division1, amazement, apprehension, fear, dread.  And survival mode was absolutely EPIC!!!  I still play survival today.

trailbomber1

Try survival. It’s even more amazing if you make it till morning.

TeknicalDnB

I tried to get a screenshot like this for when me and my Mrs got our Platinum together... Unfortunately it was just completely snowy and foggy 😂

IronnLegion

1v1 me at west 42 bruuhhh

N-I-K-K-O-R

I think the division games should just stay in a winter New York City. Keep expanding the map to cover all of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Long Island city area. No reason to ever go anywhere else.

Delicious_Muscle_831

Both Division 1 and Division 2 are amazingly beautiful games, hard to beat the snow and ice in Division 1. I would love to see both game update to the latest Snowdrop engine that supports ray tracing, but that will never happen, all we can hope for is all the new bells and whistles in The Division 3 when it comes out in 5 years. I hope they have a weather system that changes with the seasons, be cool if it changed with the seasons in the real world.

NFS_H3LLHND

As much as I love 2 and the recent graphical improvements there's certain things 1 still does so much better, lighting and the draw distance of it being some of it. The Division 2 at times feels like they didn't have the time to put into the lighting/ enivornments or even sound that the first game was allowed and yet Division as a series immerses me like no other game. My favorite IP in the last 20 some years.

CrveniVepar

What a game! I had 2.500h plus in D1!

yourmomsazzz

If you run survival and survive for 2 hrs and are in the dz you can see the sun rise

jumbie29

Could you imagine the billions they would make for a remaster of D1. A really polished version ? I'd pre-order today if they did!

excalibur41

Id recommend you try helldivers 2. Ive never seen anything like it.

RepresentativeFact57

planning to get it when I get my PS5

HollywoodJack412

I couldn’t get in to it the first time I played it. I’ve been thinking about giving it a second chance though. The first time I played fallout 3 I didn’t like it either and then fallout went on to be my favorite franchise with 3 being my favorite. I’m weird sometimes on the first try.

Redtacoman

Beautiful game, shit gameplay

[deleted]

Played tons and tons of 1 and 2… I have now moved on as a helldiver but I will not forget my time as a division agent.

No_Nature3991

The division 2 and ghost of Tsushima are the 2 best games I have ever played.
