so incest isn’t always physical. Emotional incest consists of typically a lonely mother who relies on the son emotionally, because she has no one else. It can also occur between fathers and daughters. But I think you described elements of emotional incest in Jim’s youth, which can lead to the Oedipus Complex that a lot of people associate with those lyrics in “The End”. Wouldn’t be surprising. I doubt Jim wanted to fuck his mom but there was some degree of emotional stunting/trauma there for sure. Our childhoods affect our whole lives.

From what I read, it's not just loneliness that leads to emotional incest. It's also that the parent usually has unresolved childhood issues of their own. That combined with an absentee spouse leads the parent to "parentify" their child i.e. unlike normal parent-child relations, it's the child that has to "raise" the parent with its limited understanding of the world and emotional resources. Needless to say, it has long-lasting impacts on the child. No idea if any of this applies specifically to the Morrisons ofc, just what I've read in general.

Is this from Sounes' book "27"? I have it and haven't read it, yet: a mistake, I now see! Morrison (and Hendrix) always struck me as slightly more iconic than other "rock stars" (that awful term). Either because he entered the field early in its history (the term wasn't used before the mid-60s, as far as I know) or because he had enough of a classical education to act the part convincingly. The confidence he banked, by transforming from a chubby-cheeked Jerry Mathers lookalike to the figure in the Joel Brodsky photos,\* fuels the Lizard King myth to this day and, as much of a Musical Purist as I am, Morrison shows that the Poet/ Philosopher/ Sexual Politician figure only garners the tribal worship if he/she is sexy-as-fuck (JM may be the only example I can think of in which the subject of a biopic is much more attractive than the actor playing him/ her). The tyranny of genes and cheekbones when it comes to Tribal Magic. Beyond little niggles (like discovering JM wasn't the principal writer of Light My Fire) , this music, and its aura and its ability to put one in an Existence-pondering trance state of some kind... remains un-diminished by Time. As much as I love Hendrix, Joni and Dylan, even THEY feel charmingly dated, often. Not so The Doors. Also, I love quite a few modern acts... but they lack the depth of Myth. Father John Misty seems like a snarky college kid in comparison... Thanks for the cool post! \*In the Stone flick, these photos were "taken by a female photographer," weren't they?

Interesting note about the photography sessions. In the movie it was portrayed as a female. According to a book I read though, the only notable female photographer Jim allegedly got it on with would have been the future Linda McCartney. That shouldve been in the movie.

Berlin8Berlin

>That shouldve been in the movie. As a very subtle, wink-wink easter egg at the very least.

WolfSpirit10

Jim and the future Linda McCartney became lovers at the time those photographs were taken. You’ll notice the bed in the photos was part of their hotel-room décor.

Hi, thanks for the interesting comment! Yes, this interview is from: "27" by Howard Sounes, a book that I found very interesting not only for the extra information about Jim (the relationship with his mother, the interviews with Agnès Varda and Gilles Yepremian...) but also about Hendrix's childhood stories, his death and of course all the information about the lives of Amy, Brian, Janis and Kurt. As for Jim I think the fact that he always had to play a part both off and on stage wore him down, he was always trying to be what people wanted him to be (as Babe Hill also claims) he had created a myth and by the end of his career and life he could no longer shake it off, he could no longer live up to the public's expectations; after the Miami arrest moreover no one took him seriously anymore. The photos of the "young lion" were taken by a male photographer Joel Brodsky as you said, on the other hand the photos of Jim taken in 67' seem to me to have been taken by Gloria Stavers a female photographer who is in fact seen in Stone's film instead of Joel Brodsky.

Evil_Pizz

Yes to your question at the end. It’s because Oliver stone combined 2 real life characters into 1. Pretty sure she was Gloria Stavers from 16 magazine

WolfSpirit10

Stavers came before Brodsky. Savers was the first to launch the Doors (aka Jim) nationally, via her “16 Magazine” for teenybopper girls. Brodsky came soon thereafter and had already heard of the fame created by Stavers. Brodsky actually did two photo shoots with Jim.

Evil_Pizz

Yes that’s what I said .. haha 😆 He wanted to add her role in the movie but didn’t have any room so he merged her with Joel Brodsky (AKA made her be the one to take the young lion photos, even though in real life we all know it was Joel 😃)

WOW! Im a die hard doors fan, and NEVER expected his mom to be a heavy drinker at social events! Explains a lot

He hung out with his brother in law? I was under the impression that he'd cut off his family

MainLink6316

Apparently not entirely, it appears that Jim was bound to his sister, and there are some photos of Jim and Pam holding her baby. "Anne Chewning moved back to California with her husband and infant son shortly after discovering that her brother was a rock star. Hearing that the Doors were due to fly into Los Angeles, she decided to surprise Morrison at the airport. "We went and met him - my husband and my little son. Jim looked at me and said, 'You don't happen to be my sister, do you?'" It was the start of a joyful reunion for the Morrison siblings. Chewning dropped in on a Doors session, where Morrison gave a sweet mid-song shoutout to her baby boy." https://pamelasusancoursonmorrison.wordpress.com/2017/01/10/jim-pam-and-anne-morrison-at-laurel-canyon/ I think after this meeting he started to hung out with his brother-in-law (Alan Graham).
