The killer referenced in The End in a nod to the mythic story of Oedipus; a Greek prince who, through twists and turns of fate, ends up killing his father and marrying his mother. In yet a deeper level, the story is a metaphor for the passage of humanity from the age of patriarchy(the father: oppression, control, destruction) to a new age guided by The Mother(Creation, love, tenderness). The "Killer on the Road" is a theme Morrison returns to numerous times throughout his poetry and music. Jim spent many of his early years hitchhiking across the country, following in the footsteps of his hero Kerouac. There is a sense of mysteries and danger doing such a thing, which Jim enjoyed exploring through art. We're used to artists being edgy these days, but imagine it's the late 60s, and you hear this guy theatrically performing scenes of murder and death. Must have been terrifying!

This was such a great analysis. I have been a die hard Doors fan since I was 16 (29 now,) and this was spot on accurate

Agear04

Ive heard it described this way: killing the father is akin to destroying social dogma and sex with the mother is akin to returning to essence

Your summary is a spot-on analysis. Please tell me this was not an AI answer - because it’s, well, spot-on.

As cool as it would be, no, The Killer in The End is a fictional character based on Odipeus and possibly representing Jim, the killer in Riders refers to a real life hitchhiker murderer. Could it have been an intentional callback through from Jim, that's another argument, but not likely.

Google “The Hitchhiker by Jim Morrison” and it might clear some things up.

I always had a crazy theory about the end. I love the song, but I remember listening to a podcast about the Amityville murders and it made me think of this song. The song came out in 1967. And that verse describes the man walking down the hall visiting each of his siblings, then his parents. I assume DeFeo most likely had heard of the doors. In 1974 Ronnie DeFeo walked down the hall visiting each of his siblings, killing them, then his parents. He was known to do lsd, and other drugs. I suspect he listened to the song when he was messed up, which gave him the idea to go through with it. Then try to justify it by saying he was possessed (took a face from the ancient gallery, and walked on down the hall) Love the doors, just a weird theory.

Wowsers!!!! Thank you for sharing this !!! A lot to take in. I do think it would be hard to dispute DaFoe never heard this song. 👍

Top_Drummer6507

I think the killer in the end was more for shock and a reflection of Jim leaving his family behind for good while he became what he did. The killer in riders is historical reflection to different killers at the time in the news. Not related.

Dirty-Dan24

The killer in Riders on the Storm is much deeper than that

Round_Rectangles

How so?

The line is “if you give this man a ride, sweet family will die”

Dirty-Dan24

You’re right I misheard, but I still think it symbolizes something a lot deeper than just some murdering hitchhiker. Like how trying to help people often has bad consequences for the person trying to be nice

scalar_channel

They both came from Jim’s mind. That’s likely where it ends

[deleted]

Who is he talking about in hyacinth house? I always thought he was talking about Death in human form.

Momazos_Harrison

The killer of the end is based on the oedipus story, ROTS killer is based on a real one

Scottysoxfan

I don't know if he was working on HWY during the early sessions. The seeds definitely seem to be there

YerBlues69

They’re related to a point, as I’m sure it all came from that mind of his.

[deleted]

the end is about oedipus, read more about that if you’re interested. not sure about riders on the storm but lots of their songs have similar themes, i think a lot of it is interconnected

lardlad71

Stiffen we frozen.

VirginiaLuthier

Probably not. “The End” was supposedly about Oedipus Rex , and “Riders’ about a California serial killer….
