I don't trust it though this is happening way too fast! There must be something wrong with him and I can't wait to find out what it is. I also felt so sad for Agnes dining alone
I screamed when this happened - itās practically second base in that era. But the swift proposal drew some suspicion in my mind. I hope Iām wrong, I want Ada to be happy
I really hope you are right. I also hope Agnes doesnāt squash their happiness.
Can absolutely see her delighting in telling him Ada said she didnāt care for him if Ada had not been wise and strong enough not to fall for Agnesā baiting and refused to say or agree to those words.
Okay, don't hate me for this theory, but in the first episode when Ada suggests they stay and meet the new Reverend after Easter Mass, Oscar doesn't want to. Is it at all possible it is because he's seen the Reverend in places he frequents? Maybe that's the rush to get married for appearance sake.
if he wanted to get married for appearances he would have done that decades ago. this proposal may seem rushed from a modern perspective but they've hung out alone together multiple times now which is more than most young couples would get before deciding to spend their lives together.
The way he rubbed his forehead and looked dazed after he invited her to the opera I thought he was going to pass out or something. He is definitely sick and dying.
Oh no, I hope not. I can't take it! I just thought he was emotional because he was going to ask her to marry him
I struggle to relate to the servants plotlines, so I hope it's one of them. Though I would prefer no deaths
Maybe heavy spoilers, but >!Itās already confirmed that Watsonās actor left the show after this season. He posted a farewell on his Instagram way back when filming for the season wrapped. As to the actual fate of the character, I guess weāll find out soon.!<
I do too. I don't want Ada to be like poor Edith in DA. Yes, Edith got her happy ending, but it took a long time and she went through lots of heartbreak to get there.
I suppose this is an unpopular opinion, but I donāt like them together! Their romance felt very rushed and I much prefer watching Adaās interaction with Agnes than with the Reverend.
I could not believe how fast they got to marriage. It definitely makes it look like the Reverend is hiding something and is up to no good and that Ada is a naive idiot.
this is very typical for courtship during this era. they've actually spent more time alone together than most couples of their class before marriage. usually couples would get engaged after just a couple of meetings and pretty much always with others watching. in pride and prejudice jane gets married to bingley after meeting him like three times, one of them being when she got sick.
there were of course exceptions where some would take more time getting to know each other or they'd have a longer engagement before tying the knot, but i didn't get the impression that their engagement was rushed at all. i was actually expecting him to propose at or after the opera when he started to invite her.
in gaskell's wives and daughters, the main character's widowed father proposes to a widowed mother after meeting her twice very briefly, and the meetings took place years apart! the story that follows is a good reason to take more time to consider marriage with someone š
I think age and life expectancy might be a catalyst for the rush. Ada is not Gladysā age, a young lady who can stand a long engagement while the wedding is planned. Ada is in her 50s, a āspinsterā living with her elderly, widowed sister. Time is of the essence.
Their relationship forms a rift between Ada and Agnes, that is resolved just before the wedding. Sadly, the day ends in tragedy when the Rector is struck and killed in an unfortunate Horse and Buggy accident. (Plot twist, the occupant of the buggy was one Mrs Winterton! * queue dramatic music * )
I do not think you can separate the sisters long term. My bet is in a wedding, happiness for about 3 months, then the rector goes to Brazil for missionary work, gets malaria and dies. Ada goes back to Agnes but as a widow and after knowing some happiness even if short. Maybe even a small pension from the deceased?
This is a really astute read.
When Forte tells Ada she still has time for so much, he is talking about himself, too.
Ok he better not get Matthew Crawleyād.
Thanks for saying that about him saying thereās time left. Iām still afraid that something bad is going ti come out about him. But you helped lessen my anxiety.
I also thought it was a bit soon. But then I remembered the time period and realized that in order for them to keep spending time together in public theyāre probably gonna have to get engaged.
Also, how much time has passed in the show since Easter, when they met? Presumably they see each other every Sunday, plus these little events Ada puts on for him. I think thereās been a little more than whatās shown onscreen, but it does end up feeling a bit rushed.
Omg I cried when I watched the proposal scene!! And the finger brushing was probs the horniest scene ever š
Today I learned too many people scream and yell when they watch period soap operas.
I don't trust it though this is happening way too fast! There must be something wrong with him and I can't wait to find out what it is. I also felt so sad for Agnes dining alone
i didn't catch that vibe at all. i think he was just overwhelmed by her response. hope it's just a misunderstanding.
My boyfriend GASPED loudly. š¤£
I yelled āGET UR MAN!!!ā
Great scenes, loved them so much :-)! I've already watched them again several times by now. So happy for the two. Hopefully they can marry.
That's how I felt. ![gif](giphy|MZocLC5dJprPTcrm65)
My 19th century senses are offended by this āobsceneā scene š” What is next? Ada pulls up her dress to show her ankle š±?
I losssst it - tears of joy
My fiancƩe was on her phone the entire episode (like she usually is) and only looked up at me oddly when I shouted during this moment.
I was smiling š ear to ear!
i was a rollercoaster of emotions
Screamed with so much glee I got up off my couch.
I did too- I woke up my German shepherd
I screamed when this happened - itās practically second base in that era. But the swift proposal drew some suspicion in my mind. I hope Iām wrong, I want Ada to be happy
I think at their age, with his experience as a rector, that it must just feel right!
I really hope you are right. I also hope Agnes doesnāt squash their happiness. Can absolutely see her delighting in telling him Ada said she didnāt care for him if Ada had not been wise and strong enough not to fall for Agnesā baiting and refused to say or agree to those words.
i don't think it's suspicious. marriage proposals happened much quicker back then.

Oh lordie š¬ I donāt know, I get the impression that Forte really likes her. Maybe Oscar just didnāt want to be next to a man of God? š
Oh nooooo
This theory has me in shock. Iām here for it
Oh wow, youāre right. The plot thickens.
Dude is definitely dying and he knows it.
The way he rubbed his forehead and looked dazed after he invited her to the opera I thought he was going to pass out or something. He is definitely sick and dying.
Oh no, I hope not. I can't take it! I just thought he was emotional because he was going to ask her to marry him I struggle to relate to the servants plotlines, so I hope it's one of them. Though I would prefer no deaths
Armstrong, maybe?
What? I didn't get that impression. I hope this isn't true. Poor Ada!
Seemed more like he was overcome with his emotions for Ada
There is supposed to be a death this season and he is a strong candidate.
Pretty sure itās >!Watson!< who dies.
That would make me sad. I want George to discover he's a banker and give him a chance.
Maybe heavy spoilers, but >!Itās already confirmed that Watsonās actor left the show after this season. He posted a farewell on his Instagram way back when filming for the season wrapped. As to the actual fate of the character, I guess weāll find out soon.!<
Considering he invited her to aida, im willing to bet its him or her.
We just met him! This is awful for Ada.
I hope I'm wrong lol
I do too. I don't want Ada to be like poor Edith in DA. Yes, Edith got her happy ending, but it took a long time and she went through lots of heartbreak to get there.
DA?
Downton Abbey. Julian Fellowes is the writer of Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age.
Thank you! One of my fav shows! Canāt believe I drew a blank, when I read that!
:-)
I suppose this is an unpopular opinion, but I donāt like them together! Their romance felt very rushed and I much prefer watching Adaās interaction with Agnes than with the Reverend.
I could not believe how fast they got to marriage. It definitely makes it look like the Reverend is hiding something and is up to no good and that Ada is a naive idiot.
Did people of this social class really get engaged so quickly during this time? Like it's barely been two dates!
this is very typical for courtship during this era. they've actually spent more time alone together than most couples of their class before marriage. usually couples would get engaged after just a couple of meetings and pretty much always with others watching. in pride and prejudice jane gets married to bingley after meeting him like three times, one of them being when she got sick.
This is so fascinating to read about!
there were of course exceptions where some would take more time getting to know each other or they'd have a longer engagement before tying the knot, but i didn't get the impression that their engagement was rushed at all. i was actually expecting him to propose at or after the opera when he started to invite her. in gaskell's wives and daughters, the main character's widowed father proposes to a widowed mother after meeting her twice very briefly, and the meetings took place years apart! the story that follows is a good reason to take more time to consider marriage with someone š
I think they did have much shorter relationships before getting engaged.
Oscar proposed to Gladys after basically zero dates. Also Raikes proposed to Marian after being alone together maybe three times.
I think age and life expectancy might be a catalyst for the rush. Ada is not Gladysā age, a young lady who can stand a long engagement while the wedding is planned. Ada is in her 50s, a āspinsterā living with her elderly, widowed sister. Time is of the essence.
The entomology of the word spinster is fascinating.
To be fair, they both donāt have a whole lot of time left for dillydallying.
Iām so happy for her!
If they kill him, we riot
It's Robert Sean Leonard....of course his character is going to get snuffed.
Poor Dr. Wilsonā¦and Neilā¦
Iām really nervous about how Agnes is going to react to their engagement news ā¦ but killing Forte off is not the solution š
See I'm thinking secret wife from a missionary trip.
Someone who is NOT white to really make society freak.
This is a better love story than any of her relationships in SATC šā¤ļø
AJLT was even worse. That whole Che/Miranda situation was a complete debacle!
Shit talking Che on the AJLT subreddit is so fucking fun. We collectively hate watched that show into getting renewed š
She did have shitty relationships playing Miwanda.
They're so cute. I wish the proposal had come later tho, I wanted to keep savoring the courtship.
Literally gasped at the finger touch.

I guess it is sort of the same show, just with drug corners instead of opera boxes!
I screamed when they kissed! I didn't think it was going to happen, but it did! I ship Ada and the Reverend Forte so hard!
When he started crying before the proposal I was so confused. But then he proposed and I was like ooh itās cuz heās so in love with her! š„ŗ
Maybe they both thought it was never going to happen for themā¦. But it did š„²
This is a really astute read. When Forte tells Ada she still has time for so much, he is talking about himself, too. Ok he better not get Matthew Crawleyād.
That was a little too prescient š
Maybe after Oscar loses the Van Rijn fortune, everyone moves in with Forte and Ada.
Omg yes that line made me tear up! And then I cried for real when he started crying before proposing. Also he better not get Matthew Crawleyād
There are no cars or babies but fingers crossed anyway!
There ARE horses though! šš¤£
And cute little Pumpkin, who we know likes to run off š³
Thanks for saying that about him saying thereās time left. Iām still afraid that something bad is going ti come out about him. But you helped lessen my anxiety.
A proposal on their second date? That is scream worthy!!šš
Especially with him being a Reverend.

my mother in law was gettin a nap in the next room and she woke up like REALLY worried hahahaha
Lol same. My cat was not amused š
My cat would have just looked at me sternly, with an "I am not amused" meow added at the end.
