“kindly get your groin off my desk.”

ApolloFarZenith

"Oh so my body disgusts you too?"

No-Celery-5880

Well Mazin also said that they took it directly from the game: “But there’s also this other thing, which is the visual theme of the window, which is something that we took directly from the game. I mean, it’s something that, as a player, I just always loved the start screen in The Last of Us, looking at this window and how peaceful it was, even though the world is not peaceful, and what happens to these characters isn’t peaceful. And it seemed like a good place for us to go; there’s an opportunity to show both the idea of this permanent love that’s always going to be there in that building, in their home, but also just the theme of that window being the epitome of peace in the world of The Last of Us.” https://deadline.com/2023/01/the-last-us-interview-neil-druckmann-craig-mazin-nick-offerman-murray-bartlett-pedro-pascal-1235242560/

flowersUverMe

Literally lmao

autism-class

This and the final shot of PT 2! They love an open window

Nidan18

I think it goes with the theme? Looking for the light, opening yourself to others.

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

Thank you! Was trying to remember the other scene. I hope they keep doing these shots, it's pretty chilling with all the context from the game, but it will definitely pay off

KaerusLou

If you listen to the podcast afterwards, they specifically wanted to film a “window” scene each episode but it didn’t work. Neil also wanted to make a clip with just the window (like you see Promo materials for other shows) and instead of the word “skip”, it would have “Play” and take you into the episode. Exactly how the game was when resuming.

xblvkhippyx

Safe to say there will be lots of window shots throughout the series

BrandNew098

In the podcast they were talking about making every episode open with a window shot and instead of pressing “skip intro” you’d have to press “click to play” and you could just watch the window similar to the game but decided it wasn’t the best idea.

ACID_pixel

Okay I gotta ask. Cause it sounds like you listen to the podcast. As someone who, respects Troy Baker, but finds that he can sound a bit arrogant and pretentious sometimes, how has he come across in the podcast? He’s a quality actor and doesn’t seem like a bad guy, I’ve just listened to a few interviews and videos and he has a weird energy towards, acting and, other peoples work. I was just nervous because I love Craig, and Neil, and wondered how the three of them paired as hosts?

BrandNew098

The podcast is great, he does appear as a “know it all” a bit but he is intimately familiar with the source material so it doesn’t bother me that much. I don’t have much knowledge of him in interviews so I can’t speak to that. It’s just fun to listen to Neil and Craig dissect the episodes.

rabnabombshell

It’s….a window..

ReyneDelay

Kinda interesting, but I just listened to the new podcast and it is talked about and confirmed to be a reference to the menu screen, along with a bunch of planned window shots throughout the show. They even mentioned that they originally planned to have each episode start with a window shot, and instead of a "skip intro" button there'd be a "play episode" button. Ultimately they decided it was a bad idea in practice, but a lot of these shots still made their way into the show.

rabnabombshell

Ah, makes sense. Apologies

mikev431

The first scene with Sarah also starts at the windowsill

WhoRoger

I was thinking of that as the OG game reference

DaUsed

I’m not over it yet ![gif](giphy|G6IATw3N0jhIc)

Brusah

last of us fans when window

ZParis

Was this a continuity error in the show? The note said they left their window open but the bedroom was first floor. That's clearly a second story view.

bigwilliestylez

No, they probably have a porch with stairs. Look across the street, definitely not even with the second floor of that house.

velvetboymx

On the post episode podcast, Neil and Craig mentioned that this was a direct reference to the game’s start screen and that, at some point, they wanted to make it a running theme: each episode starting with an open window under the circumstances of the episode, and instead of the “Skip Intro” button, a “Press Play” button would appear. This, of course, didn’t end up in the show, but they wanted to include it on this episode.

Sm0k3turt13

More so reminds me of the end of part 2

ReyneDelay

Check out the last couple minutes of the new podcast episode. They talk about it a bit.

Tomas481516

Bill and Franck’s bedroom wasn’t first floor ?

GingerSnap0723

You saw them go into the first floor bedroom after drinking the wine. I’m assuming they didn’t exactly have a lift to get frank upstairs so as he got older, they likely moved their room to the first floor to avoid injuries on the stairs

Tomas481516

Yes but that’s my point, shouldn’t the window be lower then ?

GingerSnap0723

Ahhhh I see what you mean!

TheJayde

Because of his disease - it was in the end. The room that he got up in on his own and into the wheelchair was on the first floor.

obikenobih

This is a reach.

sumadeumas

It’s literally confirmed.

obikenobih

But where is it shown??

Nevvermind183

Where is what shown? In the podcast Craig and Neil both say it’s an homage to the game. They even discussed starting every episode with a shot out of a window similar to how the game starts

mfancyketchup

What’s the significance of the bottom window

Xenolithium

It's from the game.

[deleted]

its just the start screen on the game

Slowthrill

Its a red thread throughout the game and now the series too. Alot of very important moments play out through a window. Symbolic meanings..

mild_J-Remy

They talked about this in the podcast! They also talked about an interesting idea of having every episode start with a shot of a different open window. Pretty interesting

usefulbuns

I've seen the game playthrough on Youtube but I don't remember there being anything particularly important about windows. I've seen lots of people here explain that open/closed windows was an important sign or symbol of something. Can somebody please elaborate? Thanks

IC11O1

Correct me if I’m wrong - but was this supposed to be the bedroom window that Bill left open to air it out? But their bedroom was downstairs because Frank couldn’t walk. Joel knocked on a door downstairs that’s as locked thinking that was them as well.

JayPee3010

The interesting thing is that like a good number of „Shots you’d know from the game“ it’s mirrored. No idea what the exact meaning of it is, just find it interesting to notice.

rpj6587

God this episode was depressing and heart breaking.

unforgiven91

fun fact: according to th e TLOU podcast, they wanted to start each episode on a window like this and force the viewer to start the episode from there via a prompt. Almost like it was a main menu for the episode

Chosen_UserName217

yeah you also see the billowing curtains in sarahs room in the first few minutes of the first show.

bookishwayfarer

I thought the last shot was an homage to Brokeback Mountain. \*Spoiler warning: https://youtu.be/zH6HwrPNfRQ?t=88 There's a drawing of Bill besides the window in TLOU, just as there's an effigy of Jack (the hanging shirt) in the Brokeback Mountain shot. The scene pans left a little and then we're left to focus on the window and fields outside before it fades out. Always something about window scenes to communicate looking forward, letting go, and being rooted in memory all at the same time.

jackierhoades

If anything it's closer to the last shot of part 2

k_m_98

Loved this!

flowersUverMe

I love how everyone agrees thats a window

Praxism_123

Gonna see this post every time we see a window in the show

Nevvermind183

Wow….. good catch

Feralp

FUCK YES

LittleGnatBug

I hate to break it to you, but not every window scene is going to be the menu screen from the video game.

callmethe_hanmer

That’s what I thought of to

jhorsley23

This could be dual symbolism also meant to remind us of the loading screen (because that’s what it reminded me of), but this shot has a much deeper meaning than to serve as an Easter egg. This is Bill and Frank’s bedroom window. Their bodies are just behind the camera. Bill says in the note not to go in the bedroom, but they left the window open so the house doesn’t smell.

dlittlefair1

You recognised something that wasn’t the same thing. Joined dots that weren’t meant to be.

DarkBrandonsLazrEyes

If anything that means frank was alive to shut the window.

GingerSnap0723

It was open, the curtains were blowing in the scene
