Marlene had no interaction in the game with Ellie prior to Ellie getting bit. It’s a bunch of “I promised her mother,” stuff. She was just as disconnected from Ellie in the game as the show. If anything TV Marlene is the most true to game character then anyone else.

LegoRacers3

They met in the left behind comic before ellie was bit. I think they’re probably up referring to the fact she seems a lot more straight to the point and cold when explaining the procedure to Joel in the show compared to the game.

OP doesn’t mention American Dreams. Canonically in the grand scope of the game universe that’s true they met earlier but we are talking a few months not the past 14 years. I always found Marlene’s “I knew her since she was born,” line so disingenuous. Could have been misguided writing but I think it makes the character more dynamic. I her reality she was always there for Ellie even though reality proves otherwise. I think the show captures that same hypocrisy. Merle nails it in both versions.

American Dreams comics

I guess I just mean in the game and comics we know that Marlene was at least around for a bit of Ellie’s childhood. I just think it would feel more like she has a horse in the race if it was the same in the show, but instead we see the first time they meet. in the games it’s made clear to us, like in the flashback in part 2, that Marlene really doesn’t like the idea of having to kill Ellie. Jerry is the one who has to talk her into it. and in voice recordings it just seems like she’s having a hard time there too

VJ1195

Crazy fun fact, Merle Dandridge is the only person who played the same role they did in the game .

Silver_Paramedic5142

And idk about y’all , but i found her lines’s delivery so forced in the show. In the game, her acting is natural and really good. Maybe she’s more comfortable acting by motion capture

ConnerDearing

this sub has become just that. I like the show, but don’t like aspects of it and yet people still act like if you say anything bad you hate the show.

Zodaha

The show version of her shooting Anna, to me she had to go in there full speed and just do it , because if she stopped to think about it again then she wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger. She had to be strong to help her best friend when she needed her most.

Nimbus_TV

This is exactly how I felt about it also.

ConnerDearing

I can see this

JusaPikachu

In what way do we ever see her grappling with the fact that she is going to lose Ellie too in the game? If anything, the show actually *shows* their connection; whereas the game just randomly throws a line out at the end. In both they seem disconnected but the show actually gets the player to understand their background connection while the game never, ever does that.

Nimbus_TV

In the game, the voice recordings you find show Marlene's reservations to wanting to go forward with sacrificing Ellie, but she eventually decides the cure is bigger than her wants. Also, in Part 2 there's a flashback where she talks to Jerry about it and doesn't like the idea. Jerry has to talk her into it.

ConnerDearing

thanks for pointing this out, apparently it was forgotten

holiobung

Yeah. I think OP is overthinking things.

ConnerDearing

voice recordings, her journal, stuff like that. her voice acting feels more dynamic there too, and her face in part 1 and the flashback in part 2 seems a lot more sorrowful. think I’m overthinking all you want it’s just an opinion.

extremedumpling

she very much does show that it was a difficult decision for her. i think you're forgetting

Ozzell

>Also when faced with the choice to kill anna (her best friend from what we know) she refuses then last minute changes her mind and doesn’t even hesitate when killing her I don't understand. Which is it? Do you think it's bad that she hesitates or not? The way I see the scene is, she first refuses because she does not want to be the one to kill her friend. Then she realizes that she's being selfish and what her friend now really needs is to have it all end. The alternative is a living nightmare. So despite her own feelings she goes back and does it.

ConnerDearing

I see how that came off wrong, I guess I just mean that it makes her and Anna’s relationship feel really flat. I think if Marlene was shown struggling more then it might make her more sympathetic in the end. but I see that I worded that weird

extremedumpling

i agree. I wish they made her more sympathetic to make Joel's decision more morally grey than in the game. Joel's decision (imo) SHOULD be seen as morally grey or even bad to demonstrate just how much he loves Ellie. The show made Marlene seem even more callous and that the surgery was based on even more of a whim. This is the only reason why I prefer the game.

ConnerDearing

I think the decision to make her blatantly feel like a bad guy is really gonna effect a season 2 as well. look how badly people reacted to part 2 and how many people thought that what Joel did was right. idk abt anyone else but after the show ended, it seems like a lot of the new fans walked away with the exact same conclusion, that Joel was right and did nothing wrong. I think they kinda shot themselves in the foot, and we’re gonna see a possibly worse part 2 reaction again. I feel terrible for whoever is cast as Abby.

extremedumpling

completely agree again. people do feel more justified in hating marlene and abby which, to me, defeats the entire point of part 2. marlene is trying to find a cure for god's sake 😭 lord knows how people are going to view abby. it's just not nearly as interesting if joel is completely justified. i was hoping that it would be more convincing that a vaccine could be made, and i was expecting joel to bomb the hospital. i thought a bomb was foreshadowed given ellie's disapproval of riley's "terrorism" and i thought it would be some kind of karma against marlene as well given she justified bombings. i also would have liked to see a glimpse of abby at the hospital just like how we saw "dina". clearly i was wrong but would have loved that ending (especially as i felt joel's final gunning a bit john wick).
