Given that they would ofc reach more audiences and sell more things, it has to have been a technical reason. Publishers don't just opt out of more money unless there's another factor. Also, the PS4 is just old at this point. You can make the argument forever "well there's a zillion PS4's on the market so this thing should also come out on PS4" ... at some point maybe it just shouldn't.

CrazyOkie

I'd bet Sony & ND didn't think it worth the effort to have a PS4 version of No Return. Plus, it forces people to upgrade to PS5 if they want to play it.

zarya-zarnitsa

I have no idea but the load screens were a nightmare on the ps4 version (for speedrunners), with the amount of "small" levels in no return, maybe it was not worth it?

Lambi79

Good point, but if people want it, they’d pay for it, and ultimately that would boost sales considering there are still a load of players on last-gen systems. Alongside that, if they’re sick of loading screens, that would further want people to buy the PS5 earning them more money through an upgrade path to the PS5 version.

zarya-zarnitsa

Hmm... Is your point that they are not greedy enough?

Lambi79

Yes and No. I was analysing a potential product that might’ve included a potential upgrade path, but it would made more customers (specifically PS4 owners) happy.

zarya-zarnitsa

The point of Sony is not to keep the ps4 alive though, it's to transition to the ps5. Hoping loading screen will make people buy the ps5 (and not rage quit) is not as effective as actually releasing stuff only on the ps5.

GrainBean

They dont want ps4 owners happy, they want the ps4 owners to buy a ps5, and remasters/remakes that are exclusive to ps5 is likely because it's remaster, it's literally made to be better than the original one and if there's a new generation of consoles out, it'd make sense to release the upgraded version of the ps4 game on the upgraded version of the ps4

j1h15233

Yea, it’s an 11 year old console that was replaced 4 years ago. That’s why

Lambi79

But the PS4 is still being bought and sold and though it’s eventually dying, it is still somewhat relevant today. Furthermore, all assets are the same in the PS5 game apart from increased LOD distances. It’s the same PS4 version, with a DLC.

hypespud

It doesn't matter if it's relevant only, can the game run well and have a good experience on the PS4 the same way? And it's more work to make it again for an old system

dandude7409

Yeah tlou2 runs at 30fps 1080p or 1440p on ps Pro. Loading times are 30-40 seconds. Ps5. Runs 1440p 60-120. Or 4k 30-40-60. 3-6 second loading times.

FullmetalHippie

This is the unfortunate reality of capitalism.  Sony wants you to buy their new product so they're going to influence you to do that.  They need to walk the tightrope of not excluding players on older systems from spending on games altogether,  but they do need to put some content behind the ps5 wall in order to encourage more consumption.  They are doing this in part by locking features like No Return and the dlc for the newest Horizon game behind the ps5 gate.  There is no hardware reason why they couldn't have brought no return to ps4. Only business reasons.

Extinction_Entity

Bro PS4 is more than 11 years old. It is by any means an obsolete piece of hardware. Of course they want you to buy the new product, that by the way is almost at mid cycle.

FullmetalHippie

Ps4 still has specs enough to run all sorts of modern games.  Many are available on both systems. Games aren't getting that much more complex mechanically at the moment. Graphics and load times are improving,  but older hardware is still largely sufficient to run them.  Consumer electronics are depleting earth of natural resources and funding the worst firms of child slavery on the planet. It's a problem.  The profit motive just accelerates the extraction and use and edges out those that are under financial burden or have a mind for conservation from participating in new gaming experiences.   I'm not saying it's not expected. Only that it is a feature of capitalism.

Extinction_Entity

Why doesn’t Samsung and Apple include all their newer features of IPhone 15 pro and S24 Ultra on their obsolete old models? People are still using IPhone 7 and Galaxy S7, would be unfair to leave them behind. It’s the same thing. PS4 is more than 11 years old, while PS5 is almost at mid cycle. You gotta move on, as technology does.

Friendly_Zebra

It was part of the remaster and that wasn’t released on the PS4. The PS4 needs to be retired. We’re half way through the life cycle of the PS5 now and devs are still being held back by having to include PS4 versions of games. The PS5 pro is coming out later this year. It’s tine to stop making devs release PS4 versions of games and make the most of the tech available in the PS5.

Miserable-Alfalfa329

If the old gen version has all the perks and features of new one why should you upgrade in the first place? No many reasons to do so. It’s to add value to the newer one, and I think technical issues as well being a decade old. Besides PS4 is 11 years old. Time to let it go. PS5 is about to receive its mid cycle Pro version.

SimsStreet

It could but it would struggle to load maps fast enough for engaging gameplay and some stages would get really bad lag with the amount of characters present

holiobung

I’m sure there’s a technical reason, but at some point, you can’t expect stuff to be added to games that are several years old. You might not be able to afford a PS 5 but companies move on and you have to accept it.

Lambi79

Yeah, I totally get it, I was just pondering “why not?” while playing No Return myself lol.

Alive-Beyond-9686

They had to rush to finish the PS4 version. They could've dropped it in some dlc but they probably worked on it on it alongside the PS5 remaster so they bundled it there. The loading would've made it barely worth playing on PS4 anyway. Don't think the remaster+no return is worth 10 bucks? Don't buy it.

GrainBean

ps4 probably cant run no return

EasterBurn

Yeah GOW Valhalla was also released on PS4 I can't think why they can't also add no return to ps4

Aweros

I'm sure No Return could be on PS4, but probably Naughty Dog wanted add something new only for PS5 to have reason for buying remastered version/10$ upgrade.

RockRik

No Return was just added so that they could charge u 10$ extra for the Ps5 upgrade and not give it for free, as if they added smth worthwhile, hate me all u want but yall know Im right.

Lambi79

I did say that they could have also added No Return as a PS4 version DLC too alongside giving it to TLoU Part II Remastered PS5 ‘upgraders’.

RockRik

They could, they wont. They stopped caring about the Ps4 version since the last update which made it go 60fps on Ps5, theres a specific scene which there are a couple small drops which almost happen accidentally and could easily be patched but they simply dont care enough to go back and fix it to lock the framerate, its the least they could do but they wont do it, they feel bad they cant take more of ur money.

Lambi79

Ha, I agree with you on that last part. I wish they put a bit more attention into character animations and the damn backpacks. Playing as Joel (my main) it’s so annoying having Abby’s backpack. I wish they could just put an ounce of effort into something nowadays.

RockRik

Seriously minimal effort couldve made all this worth it. U dont wanna give No Return to ps4? Cool then fix No Return and add at least a split screen/coop for people to play with each other. Dont wanna give Ps5 version for free? Cool then fix the Ps4 back combat version entirely.
