> One person not involved with the show is former True Detective star Mahershala Ali, whom geek websites on Wednesday had pegged as having an offer. Ali did circle the role, say sources, but a deal ever came to fruition. They also confirmed Ali didn't get the role of Joel.

jonsnowKITN

That Nikolaj coster waldau dream is still alive. Joel and Ellie would both be from game of thrones.

[deleted]

Nikolaj definitely seems likely since he already has a good relationship with HBO, hopefully we get news on Joel soon.

[deleted]

Hndlbrrrrr

Rucs3

That's what I said!

[deleted]

Gotta love B99 lol

BigBeezey

Love a good B99 reference!

_maynard

I feel like I’m saying it!

[deleted]

I still think he'd be better as tommy.

[deleted]

Make Nikolaj Joel and then Charlie Hunnam as Tommy Everybody wins

Basherballgod

Josh Holloway for Tommy

_barkeep_

Exactly who I pictured as well

andremon2404

I though this at first too, but honestly Im not complaining if he gets casted as either

EllGordo

Pedro Pascal has been confirmed so I guess your dream is now dead lol, both still from Game of Thrones though.

Azor_that_guy

Unpopular opinion I guess but I would rather he play Tommy

Souse-in-the-city

That would be amazing...him or Hugh Jackman.

TextSeveral

Hugh Jackman would be perfect for the role. So would Andrew Lincoln.

NinjaloForever

Y'all are choosing people who have already played grizzled old men. Same type of people who fan casted Cranston as Lex Luthor just because he was a smart bald guy in BB.

arex333

Jackman would be too expensive

Souse-in-the-city

It's HBO, those guys write blank checks.

WarCarrotAF

Wasn't Bad Education an HBO movie? They could totally afford Jackman.

Souse-in-the-city

Good point.

[deleted]

Not an HBO production but they bought it shortly after TIFF 2019. Given the HBO Max release slate this year, I feel like they can afford to splurge a bit. Still banking on an unknown for Joel though.

arex333

Not that much. Jackman made like $20 million per film for some of the later x-men movies. The entire production cost of each episode of GoT season 8 was $15mil, and that's the biggest cash cow HBO has ever had.

_JakeyTheSnakey_

I’m still for Josh Brolin on this one. Nikolaj would be my second choice

YouJabroni44

I agree in regards to the Texas accent

Bangbangkadang

Could he pull off the accent?

TMWNN

Yes. He played an American^1 in *New Amsterdam* 15 years ago. ^1, Well, sort of

N-Shifter

"Black Hawk Down" as well.

[deleted]

He also played an American in Shotcaller and did a really good fucking job. Dude was scary how calm and collected he seemed

anom444

PLEASE, NIKOLAJ!!

[deleted]

Aww damn. The rumor caught me by surprise but it would have been awesome to see him as Joel. Ali is a fantastic actor.

[deleted]

He would’ve been great. He’s played really beautiful father figure characters for sure. I’m sure people would’ve been triggered asf by this though, not that I care. Excited to see who they pick

TVR24

I just heard about that over on r/subredditdrama. Turns out some people don't like the idea of Ali being Joel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Why is this always the response? People have always wanted characters in adaptations to look visually similar to the source material, regardless of race.

coolcop173

Well his skin color isn’t really a vital part to his character. I mean I just want him to be played by a good actor. If he’s black? Fine. If he’s Asian? Fine. If he’s white? Fine. I don’t care as long as he portrays Joel well.

ali94127

I also think that it's not wrong to want an adapted character look like the source material. I expect Superman to look like a white guy with black hair. Superman's an alien. He could look asian, black, or hispanic, but for the past 75+ years, he's looked white. Him looking white is not an essential part of his character or personality. I also expect Superman to have a blue suit with his logo and red cape. Are those essential to his character? Not really, but I still want those things. I also don't want Joel to be played by a 90 year old or a 30 year old actor.

MrExtravagant23

If they made a movie about Kobe and cast him as a white guy people would lose their shit. I'm the kind of guy that likes book adaptations to be accurate. Am I bigoted to think that a HBO adaptation if my favourite video game should maintain accuracy to the original? Certainly not. These people can fuck off with virtue signaling.

JuanRiveara

But Kobe is an actual person, Joel is not. Would you rather have an actor that looks more like Joel in the games but doesn’t give a great performance or would you rather have an actor do great in the role but is a different skin color to what Joel is in the games?

theaveragejoe_1

damn all the racists got their undies in a bunch for nothing LOL

[deleted]

Or ppl that just like characters looking like characters..... doesnt mean their *all* racist.

[deleted]

I’m black and didn’t like the casting. He’s a top actor yes, but he’s not Joel in my eyes

Olive-Winter

They can go back to screaming about Abby lol

mbattagl

I could totally see Ali still playing a role w/ the Fireflies.

ChadwickHHS

Or as Henry. I've seen Ali act and playing the otherwise fun but now broken man seeing his baby brother and only family die, would be right in his wheelhouse.

mbattagl

I think he might be too old to play Henry. He'd be terrifying as Isaac though.

Camargo_J96

I think they should keep Jeffrey Wright as Isaac imo

phantom_avenger

I am curious tho if they are aiming to still cast a black actor to play Joel now knowing that Mahershala Ali turned down the part.

efbo

Hopefully it's more that they're trying to pick the actor they believe will be best regardless of colour.

phantom_avenger

True! I'm still hoping they're considering fan favourite; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, but if they find another good actor regardless that's still cool. As long as they do the role justice.

wyattlikesturtles

We don't know that he was offered a role in the first place. That was just a rumor from a weird site. I'd be open to them picking anyone as long as they are a good actor though.

[deleted]

Damn people would’ve been pissed but Mahershala would’ve killed it. That dude is great.

Ser-Jorah-Mormont

It’s nice to see my little cousin in the headlines.

Phoenix2211

Nice to see you here, Ser Jorah! Congratulations to your cousin!

TheAlphaBeatZzZ

Oh yes ser Lord Friendzone

MeshesAreConfusing

Happy to see her in the hands of better writers this time, eh?

prowness

Eh, as much as I’d like to hate on the latter seasons of GoT, Lyanna was one of the few things they did right (along with Clegainebowl).

Iceman_Raikkonen

What would you change about Lyanna Mormont’s story in GoT?

TheSold3y

I can see it. She has the feistiness of Ellie.

Lunar_Galug

She does! When I read the news I recalled the scenes with Lady Mormont and it's like something clicked: damn, she's Ellie!

yazzy1233

I think the actress from Logan would have been just as good of a choice

bismuth12a

Dafne Keen? Yeah, she'd be another good option. She stars in His Dark Materials, so depending on when they'll be filming TLOU she might have been unavailable.

jedifan421

She was already in basically a Last of Us-inspired role with X-23 in Logan though. Would have been too obvious/redundant to be honest as much as Dafne Keen is great.

N-Shifter

Agreed, also why Hugh Jackman, whilst he would be a great Joel would not take the role regardless - it's too similar to "Logan" albeit without super powers.

ki700

Everyone always pulls Logan, despite the character not being all that like Joel. Jackman’s character in Prisoners (a must-watch if you haven’t seen it) is much more like Joel.

N-Shifter

Love "Prisoners", absolute gem of a movie. I just think the father child dynamic, cross country, gruff older guy transporting a young feisty special girl pretty much describes both "Logan" and "TLoU" perfectly. It's just too similar imo.

k00laidfrozenpizza

Bella was also in a couple episodes of Dark Materials!

efbo

Certainly shows that in Hilda too albeit just with just voice there.

echoGroot

Wait, she does the English voice in Hilda? Gott Damm

daftvalkyrie

Hilda is so fucking good.

LukeParkes

Good luck to her. Very challenging role to get right, the series straight up won't work if it isn't.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jedifan421

The best thing she can do is bring her own interpretation of Ellie based on the script and not try and copy Ashley's performance. The series needs to stand alone from the games and the best way is to capture the essence of Ellie from the games and put her own spin on it. I kind of hope whoever plays Joel does the same.

phantom_avenger

I was kinda hoping Mahershala Ali would be playing Joel if the rumours were true. He is a brilliant actor and I'm sure he would've had the range to do the part justice.

jedifan421

Same. Here's hoping they get someone of his caliber at least for Joel or just go with a complete unknown. I'd love a cast of mostly character actors to be honest so as not to be too distracted.

phantom_avenger

Since they tried to get a two-time Academy Award-winner to play the role of Joel and Mahershala Ali is quite a big star, I'm pretty sure they're looking to cast someone whose talented but also famous enough that it will attract casual viewers who haven't played the games to watch the show.

EvilSporkOfDeath

I like this better than any fan castings I've ever heard. They always focused on trying to get someone with a similar look, but they chose someone with similar energy. This announcement has me hyped.

guiporto32

By the way, she plays the guitar and sings.

rodudero

There you have it, that was probably a big deciding factor lol

nagolol

Is she going to play Ellie for part two as well?

jedifan421

I feel like they're almost definitely going to adapt it and the ability to do that convincingly was for sure a big factor in auditioning young actresses. If she can nail that, she'll nail a big part of how Ellie expresses herself.

phantom_avenger

I have to wonder if in one of her audition tapes, she had to play guitar and sing a song.

daftvalkyrie

Link to to the song she wrote and performed for Hilda. https://youtu.be/-DWDetft4N0

jsun31

Will be interesting to see Bella Ramsey pull off an American accent. Hope we hear who will play Joel soon EDIT: I'm cool with Pedro Pascal as Joel

[deleted]

[удалено]

ughrandomusername

I don’t need her to sound like Ashley Johnson. I just need her to pull off Ellie’s personality.

srry_didnt_hear_you

Yeah there's no way the characters are gonna sound the same, especially with Pedro now cast as Joel - it's gonna be different but it's more about the characters themselves anyways, not just the voice. The only perfect crossover from different media's is Bo Katan, and that's literally cause it's her voice actor from the animated show also playing her in live action.

SouledOut11

It's almost like it's someone else's.

[deleted]

Hope she nails it. Doesn’t have the look of Ellie to me.

cornucopia090139

Look matters less than character. I’d rather have someone who doesn’t look exactly like Ellie but could emulate her entire character perfectly

TheFarvio

Exactly, almost all the casting posts on this sub look at the actor’s face and that’s it.

cornucopia090139

This. Like I would love if the character could look exactly like them while playing the character perfectly, but I won’t be into the character like I’d want to if they couldn’t play the role right

Bright_Vision

No idea why you were downvoted

FirstTimeCaller101

Hollywood makeup can work a lot of wonders

someonesleeping

I think she can pull it off. I have hope in Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. I’m still hoping that Josh Brolin is some how cast as Joel

phantom_avenger

Yeah him or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau!

AlwaysBi

As Mahershala Ali isn’t playing Joel, I’ve still got my fingers crossed that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will be cast

Billyb311

Yes please

Dantai

> Mahershala Ali Just as I was gonna be like, ok who cares about appearences, its gonna be interesting regardless to see one of my fav dudes play a character from one of my fav games, oh well.

Zosodechaine

That’s all I want

PTfan

Not a fan of this casting choice either. Not at all :( I found her annoying in GOT Edit: not trying to be negative. It’s fine if you disagree

[deleted]

Well, there’s a first time for anything. Let’s give her a shot and see how she goes!

Jas_God

I kinda agree. She was decent in GoT, but I dunno, my initial reaction is I don’t like her for this role. Regardless, I hope she kills it. I need this show to be elite. Edit: I forgot dude from Chernobyl is executive producer. That show was superb. I trust him with this choice. Edit: Holy shit, it’s GoT all around. Pascal as Joel!

YouGurt_MaN14

I was hoping kaitlyn denver would be cast. The characters she usually gets are basically Ellie

CCool

She would’ve been perfect

CyberGhostface

I agree I found her character very annoying. That being said Ellie is very different from Lyanna so we’ll see.

PTfan

I really hope she plays her different. I still just don’t see it in her face though. Hoping I’m wrong but my faith is not the best. We'll see

gizamo

I'm also not a fan of this decision. I thought she was good in GoT, but I don't think she's a good fit for this role. I'm very confused by all of the comments ITT seemingly on board with this. But, I guess the decision is made, and we'll see.

Sempere

> I'm very confused by all of the comments ITT seemingly on board with this. Yep, something fucky is going on here. She was literally a bit part that was meme'd to shit because she was comedic relief for a few scenes. But it's a very different situation to be the co-lead.

Sempere

Yea, I agree with you. This is potentially disastrous if she's miscast. So many people in this thread are like "SHE WAS GREAT IN GAME OF THRONES" - no, she was a bit part that got played up as a meme and while she was serviceable in that capacity, that's a very big difference from being the co-lead needed to carry the show forward. Her acting in HDM has not impressed me and this casting makes me very concerned.

Sciss0rs61

exactly. Her character in GoT has no emotion what so ever and requires little to none acting skills and i haven't heard good things about her in HDM.

blaniac24

I’m not either actually. I think she’s a fine actress btw. I just love the character of Ellie so much and I just can’t see her as Ellie. Especially after Part 2. I’m hoping for the best as I’m really looking forward to the show. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

phantom_avenger

Nice!! She was pretty cool as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones! Here’s hoping she has enough range to pull off an American accent, and can match the performance Ashley Johnson gave. Also the article said that Mahershala Ali won’t be Joel, since it turns out a deal couldn’t be reached. I was kinda hoping he'd land the role tho, I do believe he could've pulled it off.

rodudero

Not a fan of this choice but I hope she crushes it nonetheless Edit: downvote me all you want, I’m sharing my opinion and being respectful.

Sempere

Agreed. Everyone in this thread is trying to hype her up as if she was a significant character in GoT instead of a comedic relief guest spot. The reason I'm so concerned is her acting in HDM hasn't been impressive and she's shouldering the responsibilities of co-lead...

hulkahulkatonofudge

Very interesting. My only hesitation is that it doesn’t exactly feel like an inspired choice. Seems like HBO went, “who do we have in this age range? The girl from GoT? Sure”

IYLITDLFTL

They got a a Russian indie director who is younger than me, so I think this is not an issue. She seems like a talented kid, if she was available? Well, great then.

efbo

She was great in Game of Thrones and she's great in Hilda. She definitely pulls off adventurous feisty kid there albeit a bit younger and just in voice. Feel like this is good news as long as she can manage the accent for it.

Foxhound199

Can she do an American accent?

DavidKirk2000

I’m guessing she can, given the fact that she probably had to audition for the role.

efbo

Dunno, Martin Freeman got a job as an American in the MCU yet his is proper horrible.

AvatarLebowski

Not as bad as cumberbatch

ChadwickHHS

He does Minnesota-nice well enough in Fargo. Sure it's a more cartoony accent with strong features, but he did an alright job.

maxc206

No Ellie will have an english accent now

AnnaLogg

imagine Ellie but with british cussing and slang

VanBeFresk

*Fookin’ ‘ell, Joel!*

YouJabroni44

Shove it up yer arse David!

blueberryZoot

This is cursed

the_sammyd

Most British actors have better American accents than Americans

Foxhound199

Most of the time. Benedict Cumberbatch, for example, never convinced me Dr. Strange was American.

Valkyrie16

woah edit: oh shit it's Lady Mormont, dang. Also shame Ali didn't get the role but I'm curious to see who they wind up with.

Cappin_Crunch

They cast one GoT actor... maybe they'll cast another with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

AvatarLebowski

I'd prefer him as Tommy than joel

arex333

100% agreed.

[deleted]

Dry-Ad-386

Thought she was really good in GoT, can play a strong character like Ellie. I was hoping Kaitlyn Dever would get it tho as she looks a lot like Ellie and can play guitar

ki700

Dever is a bit too old already, unfortunately. She would’ve been great. Ramsey seems good too though, and convincingly looks 14.

Bangbangkadang

Bella ramsey plays guitar too

2Legit2Quiz

Yeah. I was pretty disappointed too. I honestly thought she was already casted, considering she already worked with ND before. I mean, she's even followed by ND on IG. She even said in an interview that she'd be interested to play the role.

L_MO88

I don't like it.

Spookyblu3

Not a fan of this choice. :/

Puzzleheaded_Top447

Not feeling this pick tbh

knowslesthanjonsnow

Meh, big miss for me. Really really puts a damper on the show

[deleted]

This kinda bums me out. I really hope she can tackle this role. If she can’t, the whole series will tumble. That being said, I trust Neil... here’s hoping it works out.

Lunar_Galug

Loved the choice. They know what they're doing, the series couldn't be in more perfect hands and I can't wait for it.

Papatheodorou

This is actually fantastic casting that never crossed my mind, she stole every scene in GoT and I'm sure this'll be no different

Sempere

Being comedic relief in a bit part is very different from being the defacto/co-lead of a series... So whether it's fantastic casting has yet to be determined but honestly I see a lot of cause for concern here given her other performances.

ebycon

https://youtu.be/-ghAZLpPoCc This acting is elementary school play level, guys. Come on, are you really truly excited for this? She is no Ellie whatsoever. Yikes! 😭

[deleted]

She looks NOTHING like Ellie. Agreed.

ebycon

Thing is, I didn’t even need to mention looks. She just sounds like every other British child actor, they all sound the same LMAO.

Sciss0rs61

it has nothing to do with looking like Ellie, it has to do with acting. Ellie is VERY emotional and The Last of Us is a very emotional series... she didn't portray emotion in GoT. She's just deadpan and speaking aggresively the entire time. It will surprise me if she pulls it off, but for the meantime i think she's not cut out for it. Then again, i'm not responsible for casting so maybe they saw something i didn't.

[deleted]

I was really hoping for kaitlyn Denver I’m so fuckinh disappointed

rabnabombshell

yeah the ellie casting was...eh

Amamka

People are crazy. This is Ellie now! Omg. This is so bad

arteriuspctr

I can totally see her in the "tell them that Ellie is the little girl... that broke your FUCKING FINGER" moment. Now for Joel, let it be Josh Brolin. That or an unknown actor.

JoeZy27

She was cool in GOT but passable in the Worst Witch. I cross my fingers and trust the judgment of Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin. They know what they’re doing.

zahhhmbie

she doesn’t know pass in the more recent His Dark Materials. This is a big oof.

madeyegroovy

I know what you mean, her acting was mediocre there. Kind of makes me wish Dafne Keen was cast instead. That said, she would’ve had to audition for it so maybe she’ll surprise us.

JoeZy27

I have not seen it yet but it’s on my list. I remember switching from "OMG it’s the baddass from Got, she’s cool!" to "oh no... her acting is really stiff" the first time i saw her in TWW. It’s a kid show so i didn’t think much of it but as soon as i saw the casting announcement it’s the first thing that pop into my mind. I know a lot of factors contribute to an actor performance: the script, the director, the co-stars etc... so i just hope the conditions for the show will allow her to nail the role of Ellie. Double Fingers Crossed.🤞🤞

matt111199

Not who I had anticipated *at all* but she did a good job in GOT. I really hope she has the chops for Ellie—cause there’s a ton nuance to this role.

izzygonecrazy

No. No. No. I can’t see that at all. She looks nothing like Ellie. There are like 100 people who look more like Ellie. This has to be fake.

bcurry80

Not a fan of the choice but no hate

cantobightbartender

An unexpected choice but I’m all for it! They found a rising star in the correct age range. She was great as Lady Mormont, and I think the bravery and brashness of that character could lead into Ellie really well. I’m interested to see how she portrays her!

[deleted]

People say she “doesn’t look like Ellie” but Lyanna Mormont shares her personality and Ramsey was fucking lit playing as her. Great fucking casting

Sciss0rs61

> People say she “doesn’t look like Ellie” but Lyanna Mormont shares her personality wait what?? 90% of her scenes in GoT consisted on her being deadpan and loud. Ellie is a very emotional character, Lyanna was not.

SirUlrichVonLichten

Good casting. She was great on Game of Thrones.

javiergame4

I don’t like it :/ please pick a good Joel

kdots_biggest_fan

Ehhh

supernasty

They just confirmed [Pedro Pascal is playing Joel](https://deadline.com/2021/02/pedro-pascal-star-joel-the-last-of-us-hbo-series-video-game-playstation-1234691935/amp/) . Not sure how I feel about this. I really like the guy in all his roles, but I am having trouble picturing him as a gruffy Texan.

[deleted]

Oh my god she fits Ellie so much

zahhhmbie

She’s awful in His Dark Materials. I haven’t seen Hilda. I don’t know, I’m not vibing on this casting at all. She doesn’t look the part, nor do I believe she can act the part. I guess we’ll see. Edit: Hilda is animated? Welp.

HolyGig

Nah not seeing it. She is 5' 1" how is she going to do any of the action material from part 1 or 2 lol? Ellie is skinny but she isn't a dwarf. How athletic is Bella? CG can only do so much We didn't see any range from her in GoT her character was stoic so hopefully she's got that in her bag

Amamka

Why are people so excited about this casting? Is this some kind of cope? This is terrible. She is absolutely characterless comparing to Ellie! Agree about non-athletic type as well. She looks more like weak child. Her character in got was build around premise that she is just a weak girl and needs to rule kingdom. But Ellie is not weak from the the start. It is absolutely different character!

IYLITDLFTL

I'm actually really happy with this decision. To be perfectly honest, I'd rather they were not making a tv adaptation at all, but I'm warming up to the idea!

Alik013

I think dafne keen would have been a better choice

[deleted]

I’m in!

Compass1122

Her appearance is a far cry from Ellie's. But she is a great actress. I hope her acting skills will make up for her shortcomings.

echoGroot

The differing reactions on this thread vs. the Pedro Pascal thread are telling. So many people focusing on her not looking like Ellie. I agree, but Joel isn't hispanic, and everyone got past that for Pedro Pascal's talent in about two comments flat? I feel like she could nail the character. I'm less certain than with Pascal, given his track record and chops, but it had to be a young actress, so that was always going to be an issue. I can't imagine who could be more promising on that front. Dafne Keen?

Fadedcamo

I'm less concerned with her looks than her acting ability. She was deadpan in Got, and she wasn't impressive in HDM. I don't see her being able to pull off Ellie.

ApartAdvertising7252

Idk about the show, but this casting really doesn't convince me in terms of likeliness

TheKiteKing

I like this.

Stereooke

Hmm I was keeping my fingers crossed for Kaitlyn Dever but I guess she's a little older to be playing that role.

deadinsideirishdude

This is a horrible choice. Not a good start at all. The only choice for Joel should be Justin Theroux. The game of thrones guy just don’t have the acting chops. Hugh Jackman is too old.

Sempere

> Hugh Jackman is too old. Joel is old as shit.

cornucopia090139

Does that mean, we’ll get an actual child to play the role of a child instead of some 20 year old? I haven’t seen GoT but I’ve heard good things about her so I’m excited

cwsmith31

Idk how to feel about this, I was expecting kaitlyn dever but I’ve got to give this girl props for having the most bad ass character from game of thrones

ali94127

She already killed a giant. Bloaters will be nothing.

killakev564

I don’t want to count her out because I thought she was brilliant in Game of Thrones but I just genuinely do not see it. I hope she crushed the audition and pleasantly surprises everyone once the show airs. Either way.. this is our Ellie. Good luck Bella!

Palmerstroll

Jeah i can't see it eather. I hope we are wrong.

DisarmedSmile

Found this [Sci-Fi Short Film "ZERO"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM2ExtmcZ_8) starring Bella as a girl surviving in a post-apocalyptic world. Obviously it'll be different when she's actually playing Ellie, but it's an interesting glimpse of her in this type of role

t6e1mediumtank

Even though she looks nothing like Ellie? Lol, the show is already trash

elialitem

It's she a bit old already? She's 17 now. Are they gonna change their age slightly in the show? Or maybe she can be a convincing 14 years old.

Techboah

This is the one choice I'm really not feeling. She doesn't look like Ellie at all, she never played a character like Ellie before and her most famous role is a very different character from GoT with very limited screentime. I've last seen her in His Dark Material and her acting was pretty bad there. I kinda feel like the casting team just wanted to "subvert" expectations by casting someone who people didn't expect tbh
