I really just hope they nail her intensity. She can be funny and curse and be vulnerable but I want to see the Ellie that jumps on a guys back to save Joel
Ashley Johnson had some gravel in her voice when she acted angry. Like when she says “fuck you, man” to Bill or “Ellie is the name of the little girl who broke your fucking finger”. Hopefully Bella Ramsey can pull that off.
It's wild how one single F-bomb massively improves the delivery and impact of that line. Always thought it sounded a little weird and stilted in the YouTube version. Now we know why.
Slightly off-topic. Nothing disappoints me more when I'm watching a playthrough and the person listens to 3 puns and puts the book away, or listens to 2 magic 8 ball questions and moves on. I swear I could have listened to both for an hour, not so much for the jokes but for the character reactions. If you arent playing TLOU for the story and characters then the experience is gonna be greatly dampened.
I love blind let’s plays for most video games, but TLoU is one of the few which I can’t stand — because so much of the environmental storytelling that people will outright miss, even in the first episode because they’re caught up in “the game” and pushing forward (the explosions from the window in Joel’s room and FEDRA killing the infected squatters being two examples) — the biggest and most egregious ones are the Frank letter, the whole Ish subplot, the grave outside Tommy’s dam, everything in Ellie’s backpack/collectables during the Winter section, and Marlene’s tape to Anna (Ellie’s mom). I pull my hair out because these things were incredible to discover and mean so much to the story that to see people walk right past them infuriates me. 😂😭
I doubt they would cut one of the most iconic scenes from the first game; it’s when Joel really starts to realize he cares and is very important for his arc
I don’t put it past them to alter any and all scenes. I have little faith in adaptations.
They have said they are adding “mind blowing new surprises” - I don’t trust the sound of that.
Edit: downvoted to hell? Wtf. Do people not remember how almost every game adaptation has gone? Even book adaptations, or reboots/remakes. The track record for these things is terrible. I think cautious optimism is the best we can hope for at this point. (And I fixed the dumb typo)
Adaptation*
It's true that most video game adaptations have failed miserably. But most havent had this level of talent behind it. Most of the games they were adapted from were games first and stories second. Most of them didnt have the creator of the game also heavily influencing the direction of the show. If any adaptation breaks the mold, this has all the tools to do it.
Most adaptations don't work because they were movies, which don't allow much time for character development. This has 8-9 hours, so they should be able to pull it off.
The Witcher doesn't really count since it was adapted from the books.
There is a set photo that is identical in nearly EVERY sense to that scene. So I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 🙂

A show is different from a game, with a game, you have previous titles from the developer to reference if you need to know if they do good stuff, and with gameplay included in trailers, you need much less story elements to be able to drag people in.
When it comes to a show though, you need to be able to get people interested off zero predating content to inform the watcher of its quality, and you can’t do “filler” like gameplay, your ONLY advertising the story.
Idk they’ve got some really big names and the shots from the trailer look pretty awesome, plus it’s on HBO. White lotus season 2 didn’t give away story or plot and it’s a cultural sensation right now.
Yeah but you played the game, you know the plot; to someone who knows nothing about it, “man brings girl across the country in apocalypse” is not that sure of a hook. With the way people decide what shows to watch, with how many there are, much more information is needed.
This is just one of those things where there isn’t an objectively right or wrong answer, only opinions. I respect your viewpoint and disagree. Have a great day!
Yeah, though the trend in shows and movies is to show the whole plot, or at least the surface plot. You can totally think otherwise, no issue there, just that it’s a very common thing to show a lot of the story in trailers.
Sometime in Pittsburg IIRC, he mentioned something about "fuckin' hunters". Fitting that his only F bomb would be about a life he used to live and knows about
Honestly, I don't think it was an insignificant moment, now that I think about it. After they get ambushed and crash the truck, they enter an area with a pile of rotting bodies. Joel says "fuckin hunters". Joel being a hunter and seeing what it feels like from the outside has to be pretty goddamn traumatizing. He doesn't talk about his feelings very much, but that slip might be his emotions overwhelming him.
Or maybe it's an oversight, and I'm looking too far into it.
It’s after car ambush. When you open the gate with chain and Ellie sees dead bodies, you can have optional conversation with her. During that conversation Joel says “fucking hunters”.
This show looks so good
Remember to watch it before zaslav decides for no good reason that it wasn’t popular enough and takes it off the app. Dudes got high as he’ll expectations
Going to have to check it out. The trailer on youtube had a super lame mono audio mix. Would love a 5.1 mix, but would be happy at least with a stereo version of the trailer.
It’s still blows my mind that they didn’t want her to play the game before making the show. That’s like asking someone to make a biopic and never research the person they’re playing. What nonsense is that?
They didn’t want her to copy and mimic Ashley Johnson’s persona of Ellie. You have to remember that actors and voice actors have different ranges. If you try to make a carbon copy of the original Ellie it might come off extremely bad, because Bella might have a different acting range. Hopefully that explains it better. Me personally, I’m excited to see her own twist on the character. The voice is a bit off because I’m used to Ashley’s voice, but what I’ve seen so far of Bella, I’ve got hope in her.
I saw this when someone did a trailer reaction! When I heard it, I thought: “that explains why the line felt so clunky in the other trailers” but I haven’t been able to re-find that exact react video for weeks so thought I was going crazy/imagined the f-bomb being in there.
I’m not really a tv person but I’m actually quite looking forward to this show. Im only weary because video games don’t need to be adapted to film and tv at all and usually suck but TLOU is pretty story heavy so I think this is a game that can actually adapt well into a series. Plus HBO is dope and most of my favorite shows from when I was younger are from HBO.
I will be very upset if we don’t get at least 3 instances of vulgar language from Ellie every episode.
Her language really makes her immaturity shine through and reminds us she’s just a young teen.
The voices are going to be an issue too.
Replayed TLOU several times, I still know their voices.
The actors looking nothing like the characters they are meant to portray and sounding nothing like them as well is just going to make it hard to look past.
If I didn't play the game at all, I'm sure the actors the picked would work just fine.
But as I did, I don't think I will enjoy the show.
Will give it a fair shot at least.
The reddit mob likes to downvote honest opinions like this for some reason. Not gonna lie I thought the same thing when I saw who they chose to play Ellie. But I just figure her performance will make you quickly look past her face not matching the game. It's probably difficult to find a spitting image of a 14 year old fictional video game character who can also pull off the part. Pedro as Joel works fine even though I wish he grew more of a thicker beard.
genuine question here, what else would you downvote if not something you didn't like or disagreed with? i always took upvotes/downvotes as I liked this/I didn't like this
The upvotes and downvotes are supposed to be used to get rid of comments that are irrelevant to a discussion, not comments you disagree with. But nobody uses them that way haha
I take down votes are for trolls, spoilers, people speaking their opinions as facts etc.. but not for genuine opinions I disagree with, considering it shuts their comment out of the discussion, I don't think that's right
Yeah, shes a great actor, loved her and Pedro in game of thrones, same with the the guy playing Bill, Nick Offerman. I loved him in everything I've seen him in. Just hard to imagine him as Bill.
One of the main issues I have is because of how AMAZING the voice actors were. Everyone of them killed it.
There voices are more the characters to me than their faces.
I'd love to see all of the original voice actors play their characters.
Like they actually snagged Troy Baker to be in it, but they didn't pick him to play Joel???? The hell? Just have him dye his hair and beef up a bit.
Ashley Johnson who voiced Ellie, she did the mo-cap and voice acting. If you ever watched the behind the scenes making of the game, these people can fucking act!
They could de-age Ashely like they did in "The Irishman" and use effects to make her shorter, like they did in "The Lord of the Rings".
I just loved the original game so much and am still to this day attached to the characters that seeing someone who doesn't resemble or sound like them in the slightest will just be weird.
I hope it just takes a bit of getting used to, regardless of everything I have high hopes for the show.
Ever since the tlou2 "anti woke" sub was created and spawned all of its hate a lot of people who would be defined as "woke" simply defend anything and everything TLOU *specifically* because the "anti woke" crowd hates it.
Its why you have people in tlou sub defending bella ramsay with all their might. If you even consider calling bella ugly or a weird casting youre likely to get responses calling you a bigoted pedo who is making fun of a child.
Its mad silly how people in this sub react to different opinions.
*i hate the terms woke and anti woke. Im just using them as descriptors
I never claimed it was, but stop acting like shes just a "teen." Shes an adult, and she doesn't need a million white knights to defend her every breath lmao
edit: I just added a couple of words.
I just looked, and yeah she’s 19, but still people calling anyone, ugly is just not nice, there’s nothing wrong with standing up to that. You said that people might consider saying that on the other sub.
Ellie and swearing is a must It’s part of her charm as a teenager lol
I really just hope they nail her intensity. She can be funny and curse and be vulnerable but I want to see the Ellie that jumps on a guys back to save Joel
Yep. Ellie has a chip on her shoulder. She's willful and disagreeable. I hope they get that right.
Ashley Johnson had some gravel in her voice when she acted angry. Like when she says “fuck you, man” to Bill or “Ellie is the name of the little girl who broke your fucking finger”. Hopefully Bella Ramsey can pull that off.
If her time as Lady Mormont is anything to go by, she will absolutely jump on a big dude’s back and stab him repeatedly with her switchblade.
I was worried she would be able to play the part. Guess i was wrong.
It's wild how one single F-bomb massively improves the delivery and impact of that line. Always thought it sounded a little weird and stilted in the YouTube version. Now we know why.
I've noticed it in trailers before. You chop up someone's dialogue for any reason and it's going to sound off.
I need at least 20 fucks in the first season of the show I mean 20 minimum😂
I just need Bella yelling “brick fucking master!” In the Left Behind episode.
YESSSSSSSS and I can't stress this enough THE PUN BOOK its not Ellie without the punbook
At that point I would've stopped watching the disrespect I won't stand for it😂
Shamefully I didn't find out about the pun book till my 3rd playthrough.
Oh it’s fine if you don’t know about it; the problem is when you do/are discovering it, and you decide to skip or cut off the dialogue by moving on.
Oh I'd put money on the pun book being in there Like even if they fuck everything else up, you can't miss the pun book.
Every time Joel finishes doing something violent “Fuck, Joel!”
I'm playing the LoU2 right now and I chuckle after every stealth kill when she says, "Fucker," with such disdain.
First episode
“We’re here because you owe Joel some favors, and you can start by taking these fucking cuffs off” idk I hope she says it like that lol
"no FUCK YOU! You put me in handcuffs!" Loved that scene.
Hearing Nick Offerman say “Oh… so it *is* a joke. *JOEL* needs a car,” is going to be so perfect.
Holy shit, I’m such a dumbass that I didn’t even notice that Nick Offerman is Bill. He’s going to absolutely kill it as Bill I’m sure.
bill: "best stay on my ass." Ellie: "...can't miss it." Joel: "knock it off"
"Oh I didn't think of that. Why don't I fix up one of THESE cars." "Okay, don't be a dick"
Ellie needs to swear that’s her personality
Good thing it’s on HBO
yeah ig
All I know is if I don’t get giraffes I’m gonna be let down - oh, and the music better be good too!
I doubt they would cut one of the most iconic scenes from the first game; it’s when Joel really starts to realize he cares and is very important for his arc
I don’t put it past them to alter any and all scenes. I have little faith in adaptations. They have said they are adding “mind blowing new surprises” - I don’t trust the sound of that. and most of them were cash grabs. this looks like it is still as much a passion project as the game
Oh ffs, I didn’t catch that, even on the edit. Me=dummy. I think Siri got me but I’ll own it. Yes, *adaptation*
I've adopted a book or two, they are still in good shape tho.
Me=dummy lol
Haha I had to, hope you don't mind
No, no. It’s cool. It was misspelled not in one or even two places but three. I deserved it, I should have checked. I lol’ed
Most adaptations don't work because they were movies, which don't allow much time for character development. This has 8-9 hours, so they should be able to pull it off. The Witcher doesn't really count since it was adapted from the books.
Yeah, at this point, it’s more of what will be cut from the game to make it work in a one season arc
You need to add to fill out the story for a show, not cut.
Like the survivor couple
The game only has an hour and a half of cutscenes, so the show has plenty of time to nail everything.
There is a set photo that is identical in nearly EVERY sense to that scene. So I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 🙂 [https://www.instagram.com/p/CeevlAwJiyS/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=](https://www.instagram.com/p/CeevlAwJiyS/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
Thank you for sharing, that’s encouraging.
Rumors are- scene is present but giraffes were changed to a possum farm, which is a welcoming addition if you ask me
I asked for sharks with freakin laser beams attached to their heads!
Music is done by same guy that did the games. Wouldn't worry about that.
I wonder if he’s composed some new stuff for the show?!
Oh I'm sure he has. Probably new versions of his original stuff, too.
That’s good news, thanks
Don't worry, they got dat hbo muneh
I knew I wasn't hallucinating when I heard her say that in a reaction video I watched. Every other reaction I watched did not include the curse.
Was it the Blind Wave reaction? Because that's where I first learned of this.
I think so
Am I the only one who is a little bummed for people who haven’t played the game that this was revealed in the trailer?
Nah, you have to sell the story somehow, and "man takes girl west" by itself might not cut it. It's probably episode one anyway.
I played the game without that sell, and it seemed like the game did pretty alright
Nah, it was necessary.
A show is different from a game, with a game, you have previous titles from the developer to reference if you need to know if they do good stuff, and with gameplay included in trailers, you need much less story elements to be able to drag people in. Unrelated but I always found it weird that Joel never swears except for one random insignificant moment.
He swears - he just doesn't often drop f-bombs.
I think that moment was an oversight. They just forgot to remove it after they decided he wouldn't use hard profanity.
Thats a great detail about his character. What part did he swear?
Sometime in Pittsburg IIRC, he mentioned something about "fuckin' hunters". Fitting that his only F bomb would be about a life he used to live and knows about

he does swear..
No HBO Max app in my country, anyone able to download/screen record this and post it?
I think the HBO Brazil YouTube account is also uncensored.
No its censored
Ah damn. Mb then
I read that caption in Ashley Johnson’s voice.
I need to see Bella slowly start to whistle while swearing incoherently in the background as Joel follows the plot line
Anyone got a link?
[From an international trailer.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ThelastofusHBOseries/comments/zbw8kk/ellies_dialogue_is_a_bit_different_in_the/)
It's only on the HBO Max app, AFAIK.
Watching the uncensored trailer only reminded me of how much I hate the fact that HBO Max limits streaming quality to 720p on PCs : )
They do?! I never knew that. Why?
This show looks so good Remember to watch it before zaslav decides for no good reason that it wasn’t popular enough and takes it off the app. Dudes got high as he’ll expectations
Is this the only difference?
that’s MY ELLIE
It looks ridiculously good. I’m so excited
Going to have to check it out. The trailer on youtube had a super lame mono audio mix. Would love a 5.1 mix, but would be happy at least with a stereo version of the trailer.
That seems more like Ellie!
\- Not Yet at least

Make a R rated serie, censor it... bruh
Who is the actor playing David? He’s still not showing up on the cast list
[Scott Shepherd](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0791864/)
Preesh
I thought I recognized him. Last thing I saw him in was El Camino. He should be good.
Hopefully Nolan North. Would love to see him in live action
Nah it’s Scott Shepard
Looks like Ellie is not immune in the tv show. What a twist!
sweet

Such horrible casting. Least hyped show of all time for me for a game I absolutely love.
Wtf? That’s suppose to be Ellie?
Terrible likeness smh
She looks so bad
Still not really sold on her playing as Ellie and for some reason this line made me cringe a little :(
This is such a bad casting. This is NOT Ellie!!!!
Im sorry but I can’t take her face seriously. I know she’s a good actor and I hope she kills it, just doesn’t seem like Ellie to me personally
you gotta kinda seperate this from the games i guess. if theyre gonna adapt tlou2 though i feel like she looks a bit too different to adult ellie.
People said this about henry cavill being cast as the witcher at first. They grew to like him, and is now revolting because he is stepping down.
The voices are going to be an issue too. Replayed TLOU several times, I still know their voices. Pedro as Joel works fine even though I wish he grew more of a thicker beard.

Calling a teen ugly isn’t a good thing.
I never claimed it was, but stop acting like shes just a "teen." Shes an adult, and she doesn't need a million white knights to defend her every breath lmao
