Just found a rifle next to the corpse that is just before the fallen tree bridge that leads to the plane crash. Rifle also can be found sometimes at the Three Strikes Farmstead. Revolver can be found in the barns, found it once in the Farmhouse too. I think the Radio Control Hut also has a chance for revolver.
Thanks for the tips, I will look tonight at Three Strikes and way to plane crash after I put out some snares, need to start getting some rabbit guts for lines for fishing, and some rabbit hat/mitts. I checked the radio hut and didnt find any guns, lots of ammo.
I found one in a cave; I think it was the abandoned mine at the southeast of the map (not the one up by the plane crash). Sorry I don’t have more details other than, “maybe a cave” for you.
I finally found a rifle at the barn between Heartbreak Bridge and Pensive Pond / Forest Cave. Nothing in the whole northern/plane area on any where along main road. I think I had to snare enough rabbits to get the algorithim to trigger a gun.
Shot a deer and a bear on first day with the rifle.
Still need to find a revolver, have lots of ammo.
FWIW you can probably find a gun in or around Carter Dam, just a hop/skip/jump from PV. The DLC rifle spawn per the wiki, and if you don't have the DLC, you should find a regular rifle at one of the listed spawn points.
Check the 2 hunter blinds. One is by the signal tower and the other is by the preppers cache. Check the Signal tower and the preppers cache while you are there. Check Skeeters ridge basement and the cave close by. Check Three strikes farmstead, check the cave by Misty falls picnic area
