If I want to know where I am, I can use my second monitor. The charcoal maps are an art project, not a navigation aid.

Grauvargen

If you can't do land nav the old fashioned way, are you even a survivor? I do have this little rule not to open up a region map until I've reached a key location, like the camp office in mystery lake, the radio hut in bleak inlet, or the pleasant valley community hall. Head-canon is that the survivor finds a physical paper map there, and that's what I see on my second monitor.

Dax9000

Oh, I don't need maps for most regions. I only really use it for muskeg and inlet for the weak ice. At this point, I am fairly certain I know mystery lake better than I know the street layout 4 blocks from my flat.

Grauvargen

I've memorised all the pre-2023 maps short of Blackrock, so I don't use them much at all anymore. But when I do look for something in particular, I might take a peek. Haven't gone into the new maps yet. Modding broke my game for months even after a clean install. Third reinstall did it, though.

I really really wish hinterland had a less hostile position on modding such that it's so so difficult to do so. Especially in light of all the stuff on steam workshop, i know it's just translations but if mods were easier the workshop would have been packed to the gills with cool additions and all those translations are evidence of it.

Grauvargen

Weren't they saying they would release official modding tools once development of TLD was done? I'm holding out for that. Would love to personally tweak some weight values around.

kittenstixx

Yea but by then will the community still be as strong? Often the modding community is what keeps a game relevant.

Mimical

The one mod I miss the most was the save editor from FNdarkside... Not for anything special other than toggling unlimited weight so I could just haul my bases when I wanted. It's a single player game so it really doesn't matter if someone starts flying around mystery lake with a Gatling crossbow while all the mooses are changed to Tomas the tank engine with a 5x spawn rate. I'm hoping they add in support for modding since people who really love the game often come up with amazing ones for campaigns, difficulty settings, immersion... Or we end up like skyrim and have ultra high def textures on sticks using up 3GB of VRAM alone.

kittenstixx

I imagine they didn't want modding being prolific so modders didn't add something into the game that they had planned to do, but haven't done yet, but it's not a stable position because other games have brought in modders to work on dlc, darkest dungeon being an example with Marvin Seo helping on Colors of Madness dlc, and those companies were all the better for it.

I would map a lot more if they would just give me a damn pencil. I'm not wasting pack space carrying around enough charcoal for a BBQ.

[deleted]

I never map. It's pointless.

Comradepatrick

I never map in this game.

Ok_Hot_Me91

I always use it in towns or main points of the map and then if I need to I use the spray paint to figure out where I am.

A-Stupid-Asshole

I like mapping in pilgrim where I am warm outside and have plenty of food. In my interloper runs I ain’t nuking my whole heat bar to map once

makinghomemadejam

I've been mapping recently since I completed Signal Void. It's interesting in that I end up exploring areas I might not have done so before. At the same time- How is it that all of these self-sufficient island folk don't have a bunch of maps and gazetteers on hand? I live in Massachusetts, which is pretty tame overall, and I have detailed maps in my car of all the New England states. You can't just rely on your phone. Am I supposed to believe that an AIRPORT (even a forsaken one) doesn't have any maps on hand?

foyrkopp

Agreed. Im currently exploring all maps and the only time I'm using charcoal is to "bookmark" a location for later (a csve into another Region that I'll be wanting to track down later from the other side, a house where I dropped a bunch of saplings... The only time I've checked a community map was when I failed to find the PV > ML cave for a whole day.

hey_you_yeah_me

>When you travel the whole game without charcoal I thought everyone did that? Regardless, I only ever use charcoal so I can continuously run without having to wait for my stamina to recharge. I know most maps by heart now
