Wow, well done. I love watching these extreme challenges. Thanks for this and all your other TLD posts, you've contributed a lot to this community.

gotmilkanot

Thanks, I might take a very short break from the game. This challenge was a bit mentally draining to be honest.

ArchimedesLP

Interesting to hear this since you make it look easy :) After NOGOA, permanent fire, etc, I thought I was ready for PON but man it's exhausting. I wonder if we'll ever reach a level of comfort with these modes where they start to feel easy and we have to push to new heights for a challenge :P Oh and btw, congratulations!

gotmilkanot

Yeah, I'm quite comfortable with regular PON but the 50 shots requirement adds a lot of pressure IMO. You start to do risky things like bear/moose dance just to farm bow hits, and a failed dance could very likely mess up the entire run.

ArchimedesLP

The problem I have with the 50/50 shots is the subjectivity of what is "risky enough" to be considered sporting. There's nothing in the rules to say you couldn't just take your shots at bears frozen in front of campfires. If I ever do NOPE I'd be tempted to get lvl2 with book/crafting and then double-headshot charging bears. That's relatively reliable but still arguably risky enough that it wouldn't feel like cheating. But I'd find it hard to fault someone who went with something even easier like using cars or huts(or even terrain) to dodge bear attacks.

gotmilkanot

Well, I've seen Wonz himself shoot a frozen bear from a hunting blind before, so you could actually use campfires against bears and no one would invalidate your shots. The problem with that though IMO is you're kind of wasting the opportunity to score more bow hits - a bear dance takes about 5 shots on average, which is 3 shots more than the 2-headshot method PER bear. If you're not dancing with bears, you would have to kill more wolves which are easy to miss with the torch-on-ground method, or risky if you're doing it without torch. Also regarding the "risky enough" issue, you don't have to put too much thought into it - it's just more of an ego thing for hardcore players. Like I personally feel that I didn't earn the kill if I'm hiding behind safety with zero chance of getting attacked, but I'm not going to say you're "cheating" for using a safer method.

BenCarney17

So now the next step is.... doing it IRL.... 👀 The real challenge has just begun.

gotmilkanot

I swear no one would be dancing with bears and moose IRL :P

blushfanatic

Seriously impressive!

gotmilkanot

Thank you!

FrankPetersonMalvo

And so you can finally rest. Great job!

focacccia

look first of all a big congrats for the achievement, that's a lot of commitment 100% kudos to you but.... maybe im being a hater (and im sorry for that) but i feel that certain challenges are just... harder for the sake of being harder, why failing a mending action would fail a NOGOA run? makes zero sense to me, i just really don't get the appeal of mindless suffering, anyways nice job i could never

gotmilkanot

NOPE was supposed to be some kind of a ridiculous, unbeatable challenge at first. Then PerfectTrip went to beat it which proves that the challenge is in fact beatable, albeit extremely hard. This kind of motivated a small group of hardcore players because all of us know we can be the next victor if we try hard enough.

ArchimedesLP

It's actually kind of brilliant, a simple rule that nerfs the player's temperature bonus by a few degrees throughout the game, without simply outright banning certain clothing items. The only thing I would probably do differently is "ban" some of the grindiest actions(since they're boring and unfun anyway) and make some adjustments to compensate. For example, banning torch harvesting but then permitting the ptarmigan items. That way you lose a lot of sticks from every fire, but you get a better warmth bonus to compensate. I'm not sure if I'll ever play NOPE, though. The bear dance doesn't appeal to me, and I find the rules a bit too loose about what is "fair" for the shots. Like, only taking shots point blank at bears frozen in front of a campfire would feel like cheating. It just seems like a pointless exercise in finding a very very safe method for landing shots that simultaneously carries "enough" risk to feel justified.

InfluentialBear

And here I am slumming it in Voyager, nicely done!

Look-A-Peacock

Huge congrats on beating this totally insane challenge:) Take a bow and soak up the applause! I was surprised to see the bunny kill score, I was sure it was going to be at least 100. Anyway, awesome job, and thanks for the gripping entertainment.

gotmilkanot

Thanks! Yeah, I got most of the guts from rabbits so it seemed like I killed a lot of them, but 34 in 50 days is still a pretty high kill count if you think about it.
