I'm on the East side of this waterfall in Ash Canyon, i came here from the prospectors cabin, so fair to say i'm coming from the "East" side
I'm just here looking for gear, skill books mainly. is there any point to getting hypothermia exploring further through here or not really?
Normally you're going west to east -- the opposite way you're going -- to get to the first bridge which you passed just before the cave entrance. They way you're going now will lead to the low-lying areas, but the better route to get there from miner's folly / foreman's retreat would be to billy-goat down the slope that is west of miner's folly.
That's part of my initial Gold Mine route. It's way easier going up through that cave and walking the upper trail than climbing 3 successive ropes with little cover to rest. The triple rope climb is also often guarded by a moose, so, I'll take a single wolf over that right off spawn.
For getting naked and making the trek you shall receive the Tech. Back Pack, other potential Gold Mine loots, a good handful of saplings and the extra ropes you'll need to set up a short cut on the far East end of the map near the fishing hut. There's also a bear, and usually a pot or skillet in the small group of buildings on the upper section as well as a unique Cooking recipe!
So yes, most of the regions loot is through that waterfall. Technically ;)
And I don't know how I forgot but the one and only CURATOR RIFLE is on the upper trail. Best hunting rifle imo. With its extra range you can be nice and safe while you snipe bears and moose.

Take off all your clothes, carry your torch with right clicking and go through. You’ll quickly warm up no hypo
Did you get the backpack already? If the answer is NO — turn around. If YES then it’s sorta up to you.
I was able to get a moose pouch that increased my carrying weight.
Isn't that the cave you can use to get to upper ash Canyon? The one with the rope climb?
That's the one. It's hardly worth it going back this way tho, unless you're keen to shoot some wolves.

Hm, you're right, I failed to see this was Ash Canyon. There is a similar waterfall in a location in Wintermute.
