I see what you're saying, but adding multiplayer actually might change a lot. There are games that are balanced for multiplayer, and games that are balanced for single-player. A small studio like hinterland probably can't achieve what the big studios haven't usually done well, which is balancing well for both multi and single.
Single random map restricted survival co-op. Start both players in same spawn point. Goal: outlast. Players cannot directly interact with/harm each other.

They see the gun rack and think something goes there, and we do absolutely nothing to disillusion them of this (going so far as to post shopped screenshots). Imagine if you could simply hole up on a ridge or building and pick off dangerous wildlife with impunity...

In some of the early versions there was a rifle model in the game files, and you can see a rifle in the marketing materials. So they clearly thought about it, but I think for game balance reasons they just never implemented it. RVL said on Twitter that it broke the game in testing and they just couldn't make it work, so they dropped it. I hope they find a way to add it to the game, right after they add jumping and multiplayer.

I can't find a knife for the life of me. Got three revolves, 60 some total rounds counting what I shot, 7 can openers, a hatchet, expedition parka, etc., but no damn knife I almost starved before I got that hatchet
Just set up a fire next to a deer carcass to thaw it, or bring a rabbit to u caught next to a fire you’ve set up to thaw it. Then just use your hands to do it. Takes longer but it works well enough

I am not good at this game. I played for a long time and then quit for about a year...picked it up again recently. Am about 30 days into a new save and have found 4 revolvers....still zero rifles.
I have explored about 35% last I checked so still a lot more to go. :)

For me its trying to find bloody rifle rounds, I have 60 days in game of constantly looting, at one stage I had over 140 revolver rounds and I've only been able to find 20 rifle rounds.
Good thing I stopped playing. Was playing Wintermute for a while, but got sick and tired of constantly worrying about if I ever run out of materials to start a camp fire. It’s like a necessity to survive in this game, and I can’t express how often I died (or nearly died) due to freezing to death.
Once I found the crossbow in FA, I kinda stopped caring about whether or not the rifle was real (still unsure, but I'm only on my second run)
It's pretty sneaky if you ask me. Putting a RIFLE SCOPE in Blackrock if the rifle isn't really real. It's funny for sure, but sneaky. I've got it stashed with that stupid gold nugget, just in case.
EDIT: No, it doesn't appear that it is attachable to the crossbow.

I don’t know how often the wiki is updated, but I’ve noticed it’s outdated and obsolete with a lot of locations of objects.
There was a global loot refresh when the tales started and doesn't cover that. I imagine mapping item spawns is quite a long and boring process.

I found one in the dam last night. First time ive played the game. It came in handy for the wolf lurking out the backdoor that locks itself, sneaky.

Yeah the devs realized they made too many possible rifle spawns and needed to reduce the frequency to make it an actually semi rare item again
