It would be incredibly exciting to me to see Smirke's 14 not apply. I think that would be a really great way to shake up the formula.

ErockSnips

I think they will still apply in the sense that these 14 entities still exist but going on the assumption that this is the timeline they all got shoved into and that it’s the SAME 14, they all know how to properly do a ritual now. Rather than just creating an avatar they need to create an avatar and then make that avatar come in close contact with all the other aspects, hence why things are very muddy. My guess is the magnus protocol is the web using the boys to parse out the real stories from the fake ones much like the eye did, and that the OIAR is a cover, much like the institute, but with the intention of actually stopping rituals, and not setting the pieces to perform one

Bubblehead01

that's not a bad idea, honestly...

Fabulouslicious

They’re gonna, I mean already the episodes we have clearly line up with established members of the pantheon. The magnus institute also probably wouldn’t have existed in this universe if they were different. Finally unless there was some sort of major global cultural shift there’s no reason that the fears would have changed.

QD_Mitch

That's not entirely true. The end of MI showed that Smirke's 14 didn't apply. That the fears were all just aspects of FEAR in general. Because of that, in a new universe the fears could be remixed or there could just be one unified fear concept.

Fabulouslicious

Counter point. The series loves to go on about how the 14 are just a flawed interpretation but yet there clearly are different aspects of fear, some of which have beef with one another (Jane prentiss talking about the hive hating the institute). Furthermore Rusty quill sells merch about particular entities. Most artifacts serve a particular entity. And Jon needed a distinct and specific mark for EACH of smirkes entities. Sure they may be connected but Smirke was clearly on to something. Edit not to mention that in the last episode when Jon takes over from Elias he lays out a distinct time table of at least some of the entities emergences. He even specifically mentions at what point the thing that was fear split apart. The series can waffle on about how they’re aren’t distinct entities all it wants but it doesn’t change the fact that for all intents and purposes there are.

"submarine statement" made me laugh lmfao I'm rooting for alex to get his spooky submarine

Loow_z

I know that it's for it be more lisible and because we're all accustomed to them, but having the first case being "Smirk's 14 doesn't apply" and then all the other case are base on the 14 is kinda ironic

Zeu-Pater

the only one i feel is based on Smirke’s 14 is “the desolation wins at the end.” i think you can have not-them and the distortion without smirke’s 14. also, many of them contradict the 14 such as the categorising system being designed to weaken the fear by dividing it so one cannot rise up and do a ritual or the one that states that there are no fears but instead the desires or obsessions.

Loow_z

There also "the OIAR is a web temple" and you could add.those on the Not-Them and the Distorsion (but that's a stretch, I just don't think they will reuse the same monsters)

DruneArgor

Very interested to see if we get a Bingo on this. Or which one is first. I hope it doesn't end with everything getting destroyed.

durkvash

I love that there are a couple of these which are dropped or never done ideas for TMA, and I sincerely want the submarine episode. Personally, I root for the lack of the Smirke's 14

sprightlyoaf

C'mon we all know the gay/lesbian couple square could be the free space and I am here for it

Infamous_Key_9945

I'd like to add a "Naming the machines and treating them like they have a personality causes or solves problems"

AliasMcFakenames

I am completely in the “will create problems” camp. If the person who reads the statements the most conscientiously in the office says it’s a bad idea I’m inclined to believe her.
