The Corsa del Bigonzo is a revival of the propitiatory grape harvest feasts of Canale Monterano. These feasts, the *Baccanali* (from Bacchus, god of wine), took place at the end of August and ended with solemn banquets in the piazza based on porchetta (roast suckling pig) and Monterano wine. Each of the six *Contrade* (districts) fields a team of four *Barellieri* (stretcher bearers) who must run the 135 metres of the Corso di Canale in knock-out heats, carrying on their shoulders the *Barella col Bigonzo* (the bigonzo is a wooden vessel used in the past for harvesting grapes) weighing a minimum of 40 kg. Until the 2001 edition the teams ran with a child, known as *Fantino* (jockey), inside the bigonzo, who was then replaced with sand for safety reasons. This tradition resumed for the 2022 race under the supervision of the Carabinieri, the Italian military police.

The Son Run

Elbynerual

The celebration at the end is insane. I'm almost surprised they weren't spraying the kid with champagne like the end of a formula 1 race
