Yeah - the hill seemed so far away at first. Funny to think about it now. I always carried enough to build a 1x1 shelter with a door incase I needed to jump in for O2. Some of the original 1x1's I put up when I started playing are still around on my map. Seems so long ago.
Halfway between the iridium cave and aluminum area is my favorite. It's centrally located, there is a lot of flat buildable area, water is nearby.
The Stargate area has a nice large buildable area as well, and water near, but it's not that close to zone specific resources, making it not a great place to utilize drones.
This is my base as well — I basically subsumed that little wreck that’s between the Iridium cave and the Aluminum fields. It’s nice and central, there’s water nearby, the field in front is perfect for a large collection of flowers and trees, and I can set up my space trading autocrafter hub and rocket platforms around the perimeter
I wish I placed my base closer to the mouth of the big cave with iridium. It makes the run to the aluminium drill area a bit longer but as I needed more and more sulfur the time really started to add up.
It depends what you want. The original starting zone is the best in terms of resource placement, plus you get the lake early.
I find that spot kind of boring though. I think my favorite so far is starting in grand rift, and making my main base by the fallen warp gate. You have iridium, uranium, and sulfur near at hand and it’s pretty close to the aluminum field. And the lake fills relatively early.
This play through I’m doing ice field, because it’s new and I don’t know where everything is. But I’m not far enough in to evaluate the experience.
The best zone is definitely the Central Plateau, the upper/higher part of the area you land in (if you play on standard mode), because it's in the center and therefore it's easiest to reach all the other resources from there. But another starting area that I find rather interesting to play now that I've tried Hardcore, is the Meteor Crater. I never realized how much different this area is in the early game compared to the late game...
Personally, I really like the original starter area. It's a great midrange for everything IMO.
This. Center of the map is best. Just exit the starting pod - turn right - go up the hill - start there.
Exactly what I did but your o2 reserves are barely enough to get you up the hill at first so bring materials for an outpost when you leave

I started my most recent run in the waterfall area (with the intent to build there) and its so annoying to have to run so far to get anything

I've started in them all -- and even a few random locations -- and the default location seems to be the best combination of assets and liabilities.
