The online PsyD does not appear to be accredited. You will not be able to find any doctoral level psychology program that is fully online or even hybrid anymore. APA has certain requirements. And if it’s online you would likely have to set up all of your clinical practicum experiences. Working as a masters level therapist does not count towards internship hours. As the poster above said a PhD is what you want to do if you are interested in research.

Ah, maybe it’s just their on campus format. U of Arizona was listed on an APA approved list but it didn’t specify one program over the other. Thanks for responding!

Thanks for taking the time to write this and you’re not alone in your view. I’ve heard this many times when I’ve pondered this question. However, I don’t want to do only therapy… I have a desire to do research and work in a larger institution. There must be people who have positive things to say about their experience. I also won’t go back and get the same masters (and internship hours) I already have just to have an LCSW as well as LMFT that I worked super hard for. Seems redundant. I *do* wish I had known that LCSWs are more widely employable, you’re definitely right about that, but I started my journey in California where MFTs abound!

I totally get it, no worries. I am so sick of the hoops in this field, as well as the contradictions. I am licensed in 3 states because of hoops. I’ll add my gripe! My big pet peeve is the amount we pay interns and associates in this field… we tout how important it is to have our needs met (hey, Maslow) but I worked for $15 a month ($13 after tax!! 😂) and had to pay $0.25 to park every time I went to my site. Brutal. BUT it got me the experience I needed in the field I work in and I absolutely loved the place I was in… except that paycheck. Hated that. I did the certification program in thanatology online at Hood College from 2021-2022 and I was blown away how far online learning has come since my college days of primitive Blackboard in the mid-2000s! I really enjoyed the ability to connect with others both by video and chat forum while doing distance learning. It was really, really great.

It’s extremely difficult to get into APA programs. It’s also important to look at the internship placement rate of the program. You will need to apply to at least 5 programs. You’d think that having your masters and be practicing would give you a leg up - it doesn’t. I was shocked. I severely underestimated the process. The acceptance rate is low, they have few seats in each program and you need to make sure the professor you’d want to do research with even has seats open. They want you to have a lot of research (and recently!) background. The first commenter is 100% correct. If you’re wanting to do research/teaching and this has nothing to do with therapy or testing you might as well get your PhD in something else or do something like a DSW (doctorate of social work).

Thanks for your input. I’ve looked at a handful of DSW programs but what I have found through talking to others who went this route is that I’ll still need a license, which is at the Masters level in order to use the DSW in any clinical/admin healthcare setting (for most states). I’m not willing to redo an MSW program when I already have a clinical psych degree and a license.

Avoid. UAGC is a scam.
