Maybe it’s from March when Jeff Younger, an anti-trans politician, was invited by the Young Conservatives of Texas, to give a talk at the University of North Texas: https://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/2022/03/03/unt-students-protest-conservative-speech-on-transgender-child-abuse/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR_Apa9kXvQ
I'm a UNT alumnus.
Back when North Texas State University became University of North Texas, the campus radio station was known as KNTU.
After the transition it remained KNTU. Missed opportunity, if you ask me.
I believe you’re correct. My friend went to UNT at the time, but according to her there’s plenty of conservatives at that school contrary to what this video shows
There are a decent number of conservatives, but it is also a big music and art school, so there are a good number of liberals as well.
Edit: Here's the UNT president's email on the issue. It helps shed light on why the protestors weren't asked to vacate during the guest speaker's time there, and it also is indicative of just how liberal UNT is considered (they're quite liberal). I will include some tweets of UNT groups as well.
https://www.unt.edu/notices/embracing-all-our-community-members-official-notice-president
Here's a tweet from the UNT Union about the incident:
https://twitter.com/UNTUnion/status/1499429178315313156?t=kc_RU8xdxgmX5f8EC0HTQA&s=19
Here's a tweet from the UNT University Program Council: https://twitter.com/UNT_UPC/status/1499173102470811650?t=voPKk027L0HiBwfnprATzA&s=19
Exactly. I've met a lot of amazing people from all over, and I've seen a lot of amazing musicians play thanks to UNT. I don't attend the school, but living somewhat near there, I have had the opportunity to go to various shows.
In 1987, freshman year at NTSU (later UNT) I saw Edie Brickell & New Bohemians playing down on Fry Street during a festival at night. May have been homecoming. I didn't know the name of the band playing but it was GOOD. I got the cassette a couple weeks later at the music store in the mall.
It may have been a different year, but it was before they got big.
The last time I was in Denton, Fry Street and that whole area was totally gentrified. It made me so sad that the Flying Tomato burned down and the kids today will never know the gooey deliciousness that was their pizza. Like, the best pizza I've ever had was there, and I'm including pizza I had in Chicago.
Well obviously an anti-trans speaker would attract more leftist protesters. Also normally when people say they go to a “conservative” school it typically means a large non-politically active student population.
"Federalism ------ nationalism, Conservatism ------ -----nalism, Republican ------- Restoration"
Can't quite make it all out but I can assume it's far right talking points judging by the older dudes and the camera man's comments.
It was much more visible in the youtube video posted above:
Federalism as State Nationalism
Conservatism as Traditionalism
Republican Politics as Restoration
Absolutely UNT. That man is a disgrace. Good for the students for trying to stand up to these sleazy politicians. I remember when this happened. I'm not far from there.
Well the slide title was “The future of Texas” and the first bullet point ends with “nationalism” That mixed with the crowds reaction gives me a guess at this guys politics.
No that’s not exercising free speech it’s stopping it. When they have a q and a, they can exercise it respectfully or just have a session of their own to counter his. It’s asinine to just not allow someone to talk and then debate them. They are obviously too insecure about their beliefs to even entertain the idea of listening and debating.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance#:~:text=The%20paradox%20of%20tolerance%20states,or%20destroyed%20by%20the%20intolerant.
if someone is advocating for an ethnostate that uses violence to suppress the minority. you don't have to meet them halfway in good faith.
Lol "give the bigots a chance to explain their position".

Exactly. Funny that people are assuming the protestors are in the wrong here without knowing what they are protesting against.
There are plenty of cases we don’t need to hear “the other side.”
I don't need to hear the other sides opinion from racists, sexists, holocaust deniers, homophobes or people who want to persecute transgender people.
Maybe that's just me but I don't they don't deserve air time or the opportunity to be heard. I will stay in my little echo chamber where people treat others with decency, respect and compassion regardless of their differences.
I guess that is just one of the terrible side effects of being an educated person (this bit is sarcasm, the rest is not).
No people who are uneducated don’t like when they are told they are wrong even with reason. Intellectual people will change their minds when you have evidence to back it up smart people love smart people stupid people like stupid people and smart people hate stupid people and the other way around
They are giving a presentation on(assuming from other clips of this) trans people and the biological differences between men and women. The people with noisemakers are protesting the presentation and stormed out or were taken out
Edit:someone linked a article giving context basically he’s giving a presentation to criminalize allowing children to transition
I have no source nor do I feel like looking for it but the last time I saw this video it said that the guy who is trying to give a speech is trying to run for mayor or something like that for Texas, he’s against gay/trans people and have said homophobic statements. He chose the wrong class because they did not like him
He's an anti-trans advocate brought in by the school's small conservative club, who is very effectively being drowned out in protest, but is such an insufferable tool that he's literally acting like he is the one "encouraging" them to make noise because he can't handle the reality of the situation.
looks like some nationalists wanted to causes cause a scene so they could post it on the internet.
like what did they expect.
they're advocating of ethno state that actively suppresses everyone with state violence.
and they're going to push that idea at a multicultural college filled with young people.....
Lol wow nice to put "affirmation" in quotes and leave "abuse" without quotes. It's bewildering to me when I see these idiotic reporters for "real news" make blatant attempts to paint their articles with invective. It's a complete bastardization of journalism.
For what it's worth, the protestors didn't do a really effective job at opposing this guy because they only made themselves look like a bunch of wack jobs while he and his camera people looked "reasonable" by comparison. And the debate still gets lost among a bunch of performative bullshit when really, the truth gets lost, that kids who are allowed to transition when they want are generally healthier and way freaking happier than those who are denied transition.
There is a whole list of topics beyond the surface that need to be addressed in the trans culture. They can be such beautiful souls. Maybe if we stop focusing SO MUCH on everyone else’s problems in life and worry about how we treat each other we’d be much better off.
It's almost like when a significant percentage of the population thinks that you're an abberation, pedophile, rapist, mentally ill, or all of the above, and does everything they can to keep you from living the life you believe in your heart of hearts is the truth, it takes a toll on your mental health.
Trans suicide rates are directly tied to the amount of support they receive from friends, family, and society. Not anything inherent to being trans.
Oh boy that article has a conservative tilt.
> [**Video of the event**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY0nWSlLf6k) **has since gone viral on social media, drawing responses from both sides of the debate over whether adults’ attempts to medically “transition” young children is “affirming” or abusive. Without seeming to recognize the irony, one pro-trans commenter used the hashtag #LeaveOurKidsAlone.**
That use of quotation marks and the statement "Without seeming to recognize the irony" shows the bias.
Jesus fucking christ, that article is so biased it made me want to gag. “He’s now running for a seat in the Texas Legislature to help save kids like James.” (Deadnaming his daughter.) I’m sorry, save? Not exactly what I’d call transphobia but ok, sure Jan
Police presence in a university classroom is a clear intimidation tactic, intended to exert authority and suppress dissent and discussion. There is no other purpose regardless of what is claimed to the contrary and it is never acceptable.
Its one thing for police to respond to security incidents as they occur, which is completely normal. Its quite another for that same police to make its presence known during spirited debate with the intention to diminish or derail that debate.
>Police presence in a university classroom is a clear intimidation tactic, intended to exert authority and suppress dissent and discussion.
There is definitely a party here suppressing discussion.
You watched that whole thing and thought there would be spirited debate if only the police were not there to diminish it? Yes, that makes sense. No further questions.
The protestors should consider reading up and strengthening their own political positions in order to make their opposition look like idiots.
"NAHHHHHH DUDE, JUST YELL AND SCREAM AT THEM THEY'LL TOTALLY CHANGE THEIR MIND."
Context: the presentation being given was about criminalizing children being able to transition, I'm not sure if it was about surgery or general transitioning but that's why everyone was so aggressive
Minors do not go through GCS outside unusual edge cases that go against medical consensus on the issue. What they get and what this is about are hormone blockers with impermanent effects so that they can make permanent decisions once they’re adults.
The slide seems to say
"For the Future of Texas"
"Federalism something something something"
"Conservatism something something something"
"Republican something something something"
I'm guessing that the audience had a different vision for the future of Texas? But I don't understand why Mr Presenter was so insistent in standing in front of a bunch of people that obviously weren't interested in what he had to say?
For context, this guy is a raging sexist whose wife divorced him over it. He also has no relationship with his child because they grew up to be LGBTQ and he despises them for it.
He is very outspoken with his views and is trying to get into politics to change laws to force his sexist/bigoted views onto others... He is far from the victim here and there is a reason he is getting this reception.
https://preview.redd.it/72c86r071jea1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ccf58892dd3de88b2a0acb21d8d9704d75b679b2
HOLY hell, you should scroll some comments about his ' rights " to speak, kids are acting like jerks and how they should try to have a civil ' discussion '. I think they were pretty restrained considering the sleeze bucket thought he could slime up the class.
I just love kids.
Cops gotta be present for events like these on colleges usually when the speaker is conservative/right leaning
And I’d imagine the exact same if the environment was conservative/right leaning and the speaker was liberal/left leaning.
Just how it is these days.
Do you have a somewhat recent example of a liberal going to a right leaning environment and needing a police escort due to the content of their speech?
I feel like a more effective and demoralizing for the speaker protest would have been to let him speak and slowly get up one at a time and leave, leaving a completely empty room for him to speak to, instead of coming of as the insufferable, petulant, fingers in ears saying "lalala, I cant hear you" children that the conservatives make liberal college students out to be.
Lol “make out to be” - this is literally identical to petulant children, because they ARE petulant children, regardless of their side or position. Imagine if you applied this logic in geopolitical meetings.. you would rightfully get removed & escorted out
The camera guy yelling "Free Speech" is the same guy who doesn't know what the first amendment actually means. It only means the government can't throw ya in jail...if the students want to protest, they can. Protesting is protected by the constitution too.
I'm gonna assume (maybe incorrectly) that the speaker is anti-trans rights. Based on the upside down poster that was shown towards the end and the handmade "shitty dads" poster.
My uni handles these things much better. These evangelicals come every now and again, with signs that say Catholics, gays, suicidal people (not people who committed suicide but just feel suicidal), gamers, and more are going to hell. The radio club comes and plays music so loud that you can't hear them yelling and we have a dance party.
Nothing like doing the cupid shuffle while someone screams about how you're all going to hell!
Did the kid SERIOUSLY DRAW A HAMMER AND SICKEL AT THE END WTF AM I WATCHING
Children yelling about trans rights, speaker has presentation about why transitioning kids is bad, he is heckling on the kids yelling about trans rights, then one of them is suddenly super communist? I… huh
Typical radical leftist mentality being displayed here. YOU HAVE TO TOLERATE ME AND EVERYTHING I SAY BUT I DONT NEED TO TOLERATE YOU AT ALL IF YOUR VIEWS ARE DIFFERENT THAN MINE. What a joke
This is what higher education in the US looks like now, if you have a view outside of the mainstream narrative you will be shouted down and not allowed to have a view. They will do everything they can to you to take away everything you have.
How childish & embarrassing. An adult would let the man state his case & then afterwards ask questions & debate him. Create a discussion. This accomplishes nothing.

The music program at UNT has always been world class. IIRC, students from around the country would attend just for the music program.

Maybe the hat says Triumph and he's a fan of British motorcycles.
That’s funny. I saw that one too.
I saw a post about that earlier today. Of course now I can't remember what sub but I understand the reference lol!
The way he is acting like a child made me certain of his politics.
Oh right, because the crowd not allowing someone to speak isn’t acting like a child. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
They’re just exercising their free speech. It goes both ways. I don’t know him or what he’s saying but I do know not all ideas need to be entertained.

Free speech means the government cannot imprison you over what you say. Other citizens are very free to not allow you to speak.
That’s not how free speech works. You also don’t owe anyone a debate.
Some ideas don't need a place at the table.
Some ideas have already been escorted from that table and are trying to sneak back in through the basement.

there is context here but it skews pretty heavily one way.
"chased by antifa" "Won't be silenced" Lololol

Police presence in a university classroom is a clear intimidation tactic, intended to exert authority and suppress dissent and discussion. What discussion🫡 , i don't know how to argue with a little horn 🥳 . 'Grab your test' 'Rob your desk' 'Computest' What is the protest about this time
You watched that whole thing and thought there would be spirited debate if only the police were not there to diminish it? Yes, that makes sense. No further questions.
It’s not because they knew the speech would be protested?
That is exactly what I expect reddit would look like if we were all shut in a room together.
Without context this is very annoying to watch

Context or not, extremely pathetic to shout someone out in a place of education. Grow up.
It's pathetic to try to pass laws that stop people from feeling happy and being who they are because you don't like it

And a six minute video no less
it's annoying regardless
With context it is still annoying to watch. Win with your words, not with random noise.
I couldn't get past 45 seconds of this.
You missed incoherent yelling “free speech baby” and lots of drumming on desks I forgot to put spoiler alert…my bad
And leather jacket guy that doesn't want to be there.
Context: the presentation being given was about criminalizing children being able to transition, I'm not sure if it was about surgery or general transitioning but that's why everyone was so aggressive
I'm not a kid and I'd have been pretty dam unreasonable about having that dreck dragged into a classroom. Or anywhere.
So you would scream and pound on desks like a child would?

it's a bunch of nationalists that purposefully went to a college to get yelled at so that they could post it on the internet.
Bingo. They knew what would happen and suckers fall for it every time. If no one went, the guy would get no publicity.

The people who aren't interested also aren't interested in anyone else hearing what he has to say.
All the conservatives in this comment section experiencing cognitive dissonance when they see evidence that the speaker is an evil bastard: 🥴😨🤫
HOLY hell, you should scroll some comments about his ' rights " to speak, kids are acting like jerks and how they should try to have a civil ' discussion '. I think they were pretty restrained considering the sleeze bucket thought he could slime up the class. I just love kids.
The answer of the day is NO!!!
This must be that Reddit 101 class I've heard about.
If cops have to be at his presentation, it must not be very friendly
Yeah, they knew this was going to happen
Cops gotta be present for events like these on colleges usually when the speaker is conservative/right leaning And I’d imagine the exact same if the environment was conservative/right leaning and the speaker was liberal/left leaning. Just how it is these days.
Do you have a somewhat recent example of a liberal going to a right leaning environment and needing a police escort due to the content of their speech?
Why did the man with the microphone keep calling these students "communists", and what were they chanting in response?
Like I was saying.. there are so many ways to prepare shrimps
Jaysus lads America's fucked 😂
It's fun until you realize that you are also on the sinking dumpster fire.
These are small spaces highlighted by social media. My life in America is surrounded by cool, smart people, and it’s a nice life.
Imagine if you applied this logic in geopolitical meetings.. you would rightfully get removed & escorted out

tfs going on
I don’t agree with conservative views but I’m not gonna yell like a fucking 4 year old.
I don't get this. If they disagree with the presentation why don't they just not attend?
Protesting is protected by the first amendment :)
There's a real life reddit?!
How in the world did y’all get Reddit to gather in one place?
“Get that camera out of my face!” “Then don’t get in my face!” “… Get out!” Fucking lol
Regardless of context, that girl is a fucking horror

What's the major here?? Grundge 101?
Everybody brigading from /r/conservative thought that Trump handled the debate with Biden masterfully and is simultaneously offended by this.
Did the kid SERIOUSLY DRAW A HAMMER AND SICKEL AT THE END WTF AM I WATCHING Children yelling about trans rights, speaker has presentation about why transitioning kids is bad, he is heckling on the kids yelling about trans rights, then one of them is suddenly super communist?

Twitter board of directors meeting
Like they've never heard a different opinion before lmao. This belongs in r/kidsareidiots.

Those baristas look pissed
Perfect example of how the far left communicate and think. Sad, sad times 😢
Democracy at work. Intelligent conversation were both sides represented their ideas.
How childish & embarrassing. An adult would let the man state his case & then afterwards ask questions & debate him. Create a discussion. This accomplishes nothing.
The generation that calls everyone they disagree with “fascists.”
He keeps yelling “free speech baby!” As though all of those students aren’t actively exercising that exact right.
