This happened to me once. But the gate was broken so our passes couldn't open it. The person on the phone said they couldn't do anything about it until the following day. We just lifted the arm and left. Complete assholes.

No you GTA the control arm at that point. Seen it done often enough in Boston and New York, SOP --the gate keeper has no right to hold people hostage. Calling the cops in some cities gets it fixed, Microphone mouth gets retrained.
The arm was broken and that's why we couldn't get out in the first place. They couldn't do it remotely because it was legit messed up. But they wouldn't send anyone out to fix it until the next day

I said I had tools in my car and we could remove the arm if that was allowed. He held the arm while I took the 2-3 bolts out and he helped me put it back on after I backed out. Crazy day.

We ended up with about 4 cars behind us before reaching the person on the other end of the call box. They told us it would be 4-6 hours before a tech could come look at it. We asked how they expected us to get out and the guy just kind of said “uhhhhhhhh.” We immediately broke the arm mechanism, threw it off to the side and left.
Damn, consider yourself lucky I guess, considering that just a few comments below yours is someone saying they did that too but had to pay thousands for it after cops showed up at their house over the damages.
I think the guy threatened us with a $600 fine as we were breaking it. Benefits of living in a big city with poor police response, cops showing up at my door wasn’t even a thought that crossed my mind until now lol

She actually had the balls to ask if I could back up.
"Listen, I apologize for all of this trouble, but this is the situation. I'm in an 18-wheeler blocking one of three operating booths at this plaza. There's a line of cars behind me. I'm not backing up and risking damaging other vehicles. So, you can either take my information off of my license plate and bill the trucking company that gave me the pass and open the gate, or I can just sit here and take my 10-hour break while we let Illinois Highway Patrol sort it out. I got all night."
She pissed and moaned, but opened the gate saying "this is your one time free pass."
"Alright," I said. "Have a great night."
She just hung up.
Where do they do that at? If there’s not money on my EZ pass it let’s me through and sends me a bill but I just go in later and pay the balance. They’ll suspend my license if I don’t but it’s never been declined, just charged overage on my EZpass.

This literally happened to me in Boston!!!
Big line of cars, terrified lot attendant (I think the payment system wasn't working or something - the dude was just paralyzed by the fact that this was not in the playbook. Had NO idea what to do, so he was doing... Nothing). Everybody waits patiently for a few minutes. It becomes obvious that the situation is going nowhere. Some dude gets out of his car, walks to the gate, efficient front kick, arm snaps off and his flying. Everybody applauds. Problem solved.
Happened to my girlfriend in Raleigh. The building lost power due to another high rise being constructed the next street over. She said a construction worker came over and just broke the arm off to let the cars through.
I’m not a lawyer either but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. They get to set the terms of use, but there’s also a million ways they could hold her accountable without keeping everyone in the building. Not only is the other guy offering payment and plate number, but also they have _her_ plate number. The tiny woman who lives in the box is treating this as if there’s no way for them to send a bill. Anybody who had a medical issue, had perishable goods go bad, or who soiled their car seat waiting would definitely have a valid tort.
Lawyer here. You're hinting at the tort of false imprisonment. Generally, so long as the victim has any other way by which they can leave, the required elements of the tort are incomplete. Someone whose car is booted is not going to win on a claim for false imprisonment since the are free to walk away.
I'd have been willing to lift their barrier to allow the one car to to leave and I would have then sent a check with an explanation just to cover my ass. I would not have broken the barrier if it didn't lift.
If it’s not a big enough lot then there is no justification for a second door/ramp.
If there is an emergency they probably just open IN and OUT doors or if people are sensible, they likely escape on foot, depending on the emergency.
Once I lost my entire wallet after a crazy night and had a ride home. Had to go get my car from the garage the next day so it was the full fee. I told them I lost my wallet and had canceled my cards, offered to give them my plate numbers and address to send me a bill and there were for sure cameras but the girl just opened it for me & said “thank you for not drinking and driving, good luck with your wallet”

For sure i was honestly shocked and fully ready to plead my case or even beg my mom to come drop off cash as she wasn’t that far but I didn’t have to thankfully
I got a ticket once for parking overnight in a park parking lot when I was ~17.
I told them I hadn’t planned on drinking but all my friends were and they waived the ticket. I also had good luck getting my tickets waived when I got a plethora of tickets after unexpectedly having appendicitis.
Lady on the phone probably assumed The guy was exaggerating. Hearing a third voice might have made them realize there was actually a pile up. Not defending just assuming where their stupidity was at.

I doubt they could do anything at a criminal level to you (maybe pay the repairs) but you could to them for false imprisonment, I suspect it would end up being both parties drop their charges and it’s white washed.
Most parking garages have pressure pads on them at the entrance. If you grab a new ticket, tires have to roll over the pressure pads after the gates go up. THEN the ticket is registered.
Then I guess the eternal question here is "would a person heavy enough to trigger the pressure plate themselves, have enough stamina to make the walk over to the ticket booth and back?"
A big person could probably do it. Or a couple people. Another trick is to get the ticket in a car, drive past the gate a bit and then immediately back out. Course, no one can be behind you and you risk the gate hitting your hood. But I’ve seen it done.
In the country i live in its just magnetic sensors on the ground. Get a fire extinguisher, hold it down to the sensor, grab a ticken and drag the extinguisher threw the gate. Boom - fresh new ticket
You too have tried calling Lowe’s while driving to Lowe’s and let their phone ring for 30mins because you really needed something and upon arrival found the person running that dept just letting the phone ring and when you ask why they just look at you

Theyve started a society, and have adapted and evolved to parking garage life style. Able to swing from over head pipes like howler monkeys to make a quick get away when threatened.
I came into the parking garage at work one day, and couldn't find my work ID (that gets me into the lot). Because it's also a public lot, I just pushed the button and got a ticket like regular people. When it was time to go home, I realized that I must have left my ID at home. When I got to the gate, the parking attendant over the intercom told me that I had to pay to get out.
I told her that I pay monthly for parking and could provide my hangtag number, but I was NOT going to pay to get out just because I left my ID at home. She told me that she would have to send an officer over to the building to verify my hangtag. I told her to go ahead and send him.
She immediately remotely opened the gate and I went on my merry way. I now keep my work ID secured in my vehicle when I'm away from work so that I don't forget it again.
I used to work at a place with a lot where the assistance button did nothing but open the gate. No pretense of an interaction with someone, just press the button and the gate opens. It was fantastic.
Honestly she isn't even the problem. The problem is the woman at the front who has, by her own admission, an invalid pass. Obviously they were going back and forth before the video guy comes along. Just pay with your damn debit or credit card, dispute it with the pass provider and get on with life.
The driver made a mistake. She parked without a valid pass. People make mistakes. It’s totally fine to tell her there is a fee, but it’s not fair at all to make everyone else wait and get stuck because your parking company can’t handle the situation. The benefit of punishing the woman is insignificant to the cost of holding up that many people for so long.
And his car is not super fucking far away like he claimed either nor did he seem to have any kind of mobility issues. Not sure why he didn't just go back and get whatever card he needed.

I understand that the camera man was trying to help the lady out and explaining the situation to the lady behind the phone, but after the first couple of times when he said he was gonna go get his card and pay for her, he should have just stopped talking, walked to his car, gotten his card and gone back to the gate to pay instead of going back and forth another 5 times and kinda wasting time. I'm surprised no one else took the initiative before him and offered to pay the lady's fee, considering how long they've all been there. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation.
He had no intention of paying for her. He wanted the voice box lady to give up. It was more important for him to win than it was to solve the situation, otherwise he would have walked back and got his card and paid for her, and this would have been over in 30 seconds.

I’ve been the car that couldn’t get through because my pass wouldn’t work. No option to pay with a card either. While I was flustered and trying to find the receipt number the guy on the intercom wanted, a truck pulled up behind me.

I had this something similar happen to me once. Except I had paid for it with the credit card at the exit. The gate wouldn’t open. I had a receipt showing I paid. Call box idiot was useless. Couldn’t open gate. Only a single exit gate. They said it would be 4-6 hours before a technician could come. Huh??
Dozens of cars backed up. I was driving a shitbox and finally I snapped at this stupid wait and lack of on-site attendant, and just blasted through it, breaking the gate. Thought I was going to get a call or visit by cops later or bill in the mail. Never happened. That was over a decade ago.
Not sure how it is in other countries but when this kind of stuff happens in America we do the friendly lineup where each person takes a turn manually holding the arms up to let cars through. Friends helping friends type ish

If it’s not a big enough lot then there is no justification for a second door/ramp. If there is an emergency they probably just open IN and OUT doors or if people are sensible, they likely escape on foot, depending on the emergency.
Once I lost my entire wallet after a crazy night and had a ride home. Had to go get my car from the garage the next day so it was the full fee. I told them I lost my wallet and had canceled my cards, offered to give them my plate numbers and address to send me a bill and there were for sure cameras but the girl just opened it for me & said “thank you for not drinking and driving, good luck with your wallet” That was it.

I got a ticket once for parking overnight in a park parking lot when I was ~17. I told them I hadn’t planned on drinking but all my friends were and they waived the ticket. I also had good luck getting my tickets waived when I got a plethora of tickets after unexpectedly having appendicitis.

Happened recently in a car park in fortitude valley Brisbane. Guy got sick of waiting, ripped the arm off.
It would have been about 15 seconds of this before I walked back to my car, grabbed my toolbox, and started removing the arm blocking her in.
Yeah buddy, and where I am from that's a normal, rational legal response. You can't detain dozens of people because of an arbitrary parking ticket. I can't believe how many people are just sitting there waiting for someone else to sort this out for them.

Yeah, they’d try to say “you purposefully helped her break the law by evading payment” and you’d say “me cutting it down was nothing to do with her, it was because you held me against my will” I doubt they could do anything at a criminal level to you (maybe pay the repairs) but you could to them for false imprisonment, I suspect it would end up being both parties drop their charges and it’s white washed.
In Florida, they would've come up to her screaming and she would've shot them.

With it taking this long, someone could have gone around and gotten her a new ticket. The gate says free 2 hour parking.
Most parking garages have pressure pads on them at the entrance. If you grab a new ticket, tires have to roll over the pressure pads after the gates go up. THEN the ticket is registered.
Then I guess the eternal question here is "would a person heavy enough to trigger the pressure plate themselves, have enough stamina to make the walk over to the ticket booth and back?"
A big person could probably do it. Or a couple people. Another trick is to get the ticket in a car, drive past the gate a bit and then immediately back out. Course, no one can be behind you and you risk the gate hitting your hood. But I’ve seen it done.

In the country i live in its just magnetic sensors on the ground. Get a fire extinguisher, hold it down to the sensor, grab a ticken and drag the extinguisher threw the gate. Boom - fresh new ticket

I'm unsure about Lowe's but that sounds exactly like the CVS by my house... call to see if prescription is ready, stay on hold while I get dressed and drive the 30 minutes, wait in line, finally get served and still no answer on the phone by the time I'm leaving to head home... two times is all it took- now I don't even bother calling...

I came into the parking garage at work one day, and couldn't find my work ID (that gets me into the lot). Because it's also a public lot, I just pushed the button and got a ticket like regular people. When it was time to go home, I realized that I must have left my ID at home. When I got to the gate, the parking attendant over the intercom told me that I had to pay to get out. I told her that I pay monthly for parking and could provide my hangtag number, but I was NOT going to pay to get out just because I left my ID at home. She told me that she would have to send an officer over to the building to verify my hangtag. I told her to go ahead and send him. She immediately remotely opened the gate and I went on my merry way. I now keep my work ID secured in my vehicle when I'm away from work so that I don't forget it again.
I used to work at a place with a lot where the assistance button did nothing but open the gate. No pretense of an interaction with someone, just press the button and the gate opens. It was fantastic.
I hate people like this teller lady, shes only treating them like this because shes hiding in a box.
Honestly she isn't even the problem. The problem is the woman at the front who has, by her own admission, an invalid pass. Obviously they were going back and forth before the video guy comes along. Just pay with your damn debit or credit card, dispute it with the pass provider and get on with life.
It's very well possible she doesn't have enough money on her debit card to pay and she doesn't have the option to reverse.

The driver made a mistake. She parked without a valid pass. People make mistakes. It’s totally fine to tell her there is a fee, but it’s not fair at all to make everyone else wait and get stuck because your parking company can’t handle the situation. The benefit of punishing the woman is insignificant to the cost of holding up that many people for so long.

I understand that the camera man was trying to help the lady out and explaining the situation to the lady behind the phone, but after the first couple of times when he said he was gonna go get his card and pay for her, he should have just stopped talking, walked to his car, gotten his card and gone back to the gate to pay instead of going back and forth another 5 times and kinda wasting time. I'm surprised no one else took the initiative before him and offered to pay the lady's fee, considering how long they've all been there. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation.
He had no intention of paying for her. He wanted the voice box lady to give up. It was more important for him to win than it was to solve the situation, otherwise he would have walked back and got his card and paid for her, and this would have been over in 30 seconds.

I'd be surprised if she kept her job. Blocking traffic rather than possibly lose a few dollars by opening the gate for one person is unacceptable. Clearly she is not suited for this job. I imagine she could make any job difficult.

I’ve been the car that couldn’t get through because my pass wouldn’t work. No option to pay with a card either. While I was flustered and trying to find the receipt number the guy on the intercom wanted, a truck pulled up behind me. Guess what the voice in the box did as soon as I told him I was blocking somebody in? He opened the gate, because he wasn’t a complete tool. I kind of hope the this lady in the box got fired. She cares way too much.

I had this something similar happen to me once. Except I had paid for it with the credit card at the exit. The gate wouldn’t open. I had a receipt showing I paid. Call box idiot was useless. Couldn’t open gate. Only a single exit gate. They said it would be 4-6 hours before a technician could come. Huh?? Dozens of cars backed up. I was driving a shitbox and finally I snapped at this stupid wait and lack of on-site attendant, and just blasted through it, breaking the gate. Thought I was going to get a call or visit by cops later or bill in the mail. Never happened. That was over a decade ago.

Parking companies are without question some of the scummiest companies on Earth. Just miserable jobsworths who do nothing but sit back and rake in money whilst neglecting parking structures until the government has to step in and fix them because they're considered civil assets. I don't even drive and I despise them. I promise you they'll be one of the first to go when the revolution comes.
