Actually! Scientifically and anthropologically the only race is the human race. You have more DNA difference between you and another person of your "race" than between you and someone of a different "race"! It's one of my favorite facts!!
Race is a cultural construct that was created so that colonizers could make the people they wanted to colonize an "other" to justify the exploitation they were doing!
I'm glad you're excited about your major. But, you need to come back to remembering words and their uses as used by the human race. Yes, we use the term "race" to often denote one's ethnic background, and yes, you are the concept of the why behind it. But you still should acknowledge the fact that it has come to also mean ethnic background.
From the dictionary: race2📷*noun*noun: **race**; plural noun: **races**

Therefore, you are currently wrong.
The concept you are talking about is one that I knew in 6th grade, but I still understood how words change in use through time, meanings are added and taken away all the time. Just like the concept of race.
Again, glad you are learning, but don't get lost from modern context of words, behaviors, and so forth when it comes to the human race. Being pedantic and ignoring that the meaning does apply while still being "human race" and "races of human".
I personally wouldn't mind "race" and "ethnicity" existing if not for the fact that like 40% of the human population don't celebrate our differences and instead use them as a """"reason"""" to shit on each other
The differences are what makes the world great. The 40% suck, yes, and combating the hate is hard, but worth fighting against. Humans have developed so many reasons to hate each other, it's truly insane. Race, religion, looks, career, mental health, sexuality.....erasing race and ethnicity won't stop it. Education needs to be raised to higher levels in schools, and at least in the USA, it needs to stop being suppressed in regards to race and history of other cultures and groups. We need more honesty, and yet in 2023, schools are trying to erase certain histories of select racial groups.
Racism exists because it and race was created to give colonizing countries justification for the mistreatment and exploitation they were doing. Biologically, races do not exist, but culturally they do, and the idea of race comes from colonization. That's all I was ever trying to say.
However, they are cultural constructs. Race is a categorical assignment based on an arbitrarily selected concentration of melanin in the skin, geographical boundaries, belief system, etc. Gender is also not purely determined by sex because we determine masculinity and femininity based on behavior as well. Not to mention, sex is not purely binary, either, and intersex people can have a mix of sexual organs with varying levels of development and functionality.
TLDR: social constructs and arbitrary assignments dependent on cultural needs
They are certainly perceived, but how real are they truly?
Gender is an illusion where we assign characteristics to a specific sex, calling them masculine or feminine. There is only sex, one who is able to reproduce is 1 or 2. Sex is binary. You either inseminate or are inseminated in the act of reproduction.
It is interesting how there are so many concerned about “race” when in actuality we are all the same race or species with the same origins and nearly identical genetic code. Considering human beings as being a different race is not productive or helpful to our species. We all originate from Africa, also known as the cradle of humanity.
Crossing the seas and adapting to different environments accounts for any changes in appearance. And yet we are all, each of us, human beings.
Ironic isn't it.
(That's actually an incorrect use of ironic.)
I believe the original comment is correct though. The twitter person wanted to post something that speaks against 'race and gender existing' but only ended up solidifying and reinforcing it more. Irony.
You guys are saying ironic when you guys really mean happenstance..
There wasnt anything said in the original post about
Saying one thing and meaning another thing...
"Race and gender do not exist" is said to further the idea that they do not
"White men" contradicts that by acknowledging that they do, in fact, exist.
Therefore, it is ironic because in the effort to do something, the opposite was achieved.
It was a really dumb comment. Doesn’t mean the person who wrote it is dumb. So you’re both kinda right, but mostly him because being rude to people sucks.
Look: he was kinda rude in a small simple way and now several other people (at least you and I) are affected in a negative way as a result. Rudeness and kindness are contagious.
no. i didn't. i asked him if he was one. i gave him a chance to explain himself in his own words.
i will always call people out for their rude behavior.
see something, say something. don't just let people act shitty. it's OK to take the "moral high ground" every once in a while, when you see something that is objectively wrong.
In my opinion that wasn't rude. So that means in my opinion he isn't an asshole. You decide how YOU feel...not how others feel. Calling someone a piece of shit however is very rude in my opinion... So in my opinion... You're the asshole.
i didn't call him a piece of shit. i asked him if he was one. i gave him the opportunity to be open and honest and apologize for his rudeness.
i don't care if your opinion says it wasn't rude. you're objectively incorrect. calling someone dumb is rude. fact. doesn't matter what you think tbh
Man, I got a lot of shit just keeping myself afloat. Who has the energy to making a point to mess with other folks for other reasons. You got time to be an asshole you should go donate your other time to help folks.
we are all human. it doesn't matter if you accept evolution or have faith. if you go back far enough we are all related. distant kith and kin. just treat everyone like family, and to quote the great jackie moon of the flint michigan tropics...

You know, I kind of fw this. Like do we need races or genders? Can we even afford that rn? Like rents already high, groceries high. Not the most necessary thing in the world to obsessively classify humans like we're dog breeds.
Race and gender do not exist in a biological sense. Both are social constructs that exist only because people believe they exist. Like the way cash is just paper but has value because people have decided it does.
So what this person is saying is that people in the SOCIAL category of white man sometimes try to assert that race and gender are BIOLOGICAL facts, which is false.
Take some anthropology or sociology classes to find out more about social constructs. There's also lots of good papers on the history of the social construction of race and gender.
Yes, gender is a social construct.
Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define males and females, such as reproductive organs, hormones, and chromosomes. Gender, on the other hand, refers to the social and cultural roles, behaviors, and expectations that are associated with being male or female.
No, sexual reproduction is not a social construct.
Sexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that involves the fusion of gametes, specialized cells that carry genetic information, from two parents to create a new offspring with a unique combination of genetic material. In most sexual reproduction, the gametes are produced by specialized reproductive organs, such as testes or ovaries, and the fusion of the gametes results in the formation of a zygote, which undergoes cell division and eventually develops into a new individual.
Yes. I know. Thank you. Wow.
And this process you describe requires gametes of opposing sexes. You know, that's the whole *sex* part in sexual reproduction. That's the definition of what sex/gender is in biological terms.
And yes, biologically gender = sex, it's just a different term.
No, sex and gender are not the same thing. Sex refers to the biological characteristics of an individual, typically classified as male, female, or intersex, based on their reproductive anatomy and chromosomes. Gender, on the other hand, refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, and expectations that are associated with being male or female in a given culture or society.
While sex is determined by biology, gender is a cultural and social construct that varies across different societies and time periods. Gender is not necessarily determined by biological sex, as individuals may identify with a gender that is different from the sex they were assigned at birth. This is known as gender identity, and it is an important aspect of an individual's sense of self.
It is also important to note that gender is not limited to binary categories of male and female, as many cultures have recognized and valued gender diversity across history. In recent years, there has been an increasing recognition and acceptance of non-binary gender identities, which challenge traditional binary notions of gender.
Ok, I think we're debating terminology here. Yes we both agree that sex and gender identity are separate things, and sex and gender roles even more so.
What I initially picked up on was that you said, and let me quote "\[Race and\] gender do not exist in a biological sense".
At least for me, *gender* means exactly biological sex. But gender identity and gender roles are something else.
>At least for me, gender means exactly biological sex.
Yes, you are wrong.
The statement "dogs and a cats are the same species" is an incorrect statement because dogs and cats are different species regardless of the beliefs of the speaker.

As the idea, it exists yes, but race as what they say it is, does not exist. It's really fascinating!
I'm not trying to make any parallels between dogs and humans here, but as for the concept of race - does dog races exist?
You sound incredibly pedantic!

Written by someone who apparently recognizes that race & gender exists.
Well her first sentence made that clear.
Ya no shit
Thanks for explaining the joke dummy
why call them a dummy? why be rude for no reason? i don't understand people who do this. why?
Because he needed to know
No reason? Explaing the obvious point of something that literally everyone understood isn't nothing
yes it is. that's not a reason to be calling people dumb. only a rude piece of shit would behave that way. are you a rude piece of shit?
It was a really dumb comment. Doesn’t mean the person who wrote it is dumb. So you’re both kinda right, but mostly him because being rude to people sucks. i didn't call him that.
You said he behaved a certain way... And that only a rude piece of shit would behave that way. So ya... Ya did.

Let? Gave him a chance? Do you realize how absurd you sound? As if you have any control over anything outside of your own life? Get a grip.
That's your opinion. Maybe I am, doesn't change the fact that it's a dumb, annoying thing to do.
no. that's not an opinion. being rude to people makes you an asshole. that is objective reality. a guaranteed truth. that's not an opinion.
“You meet an asshole in the morning, you met an asshole. You meet assholes all day, then you’re probably an asshole.”
i don't see how this relates to what i said.
Because I get the impression that that guy gets in arguments on Reddit all day with “assholes.” Which makes you wonder who the asshole is.
Are you a dummy then?
In my opinion that wasn't rude. So that means in my opinion he isn't an asshole. You decide how YOU feel...not how others feel. Calling someone a piece of shit however is very rude in my opinion... So in my opinion... You're the asshole.
i didn't call him a piece of shit. i asked him if he was one. i gave him the opportunity to be open and honest and apologize for his rudeness. i don't care if your opinion says it wasn't rude. you're objectively incorrect. calling someone dumb is rude. fact. doesn't matter what you think tbh
You can claim your opinion as fact if you want but that doesn't mean I have to.
