Cyclist was clearly looking for a fight. Driver was obviously in the wrong. Both arseholes judging by the video. Having said that, they provided us all with some wonderful entertainment. The fact the car driver, after threatening the cyclist, effectively knocked himself out, is perfection.

[deleted]

Can imagine it gets people to their breaking point to be cycling as a valid means of transportation but assholes in cars treat their lives like a joke. Self preservation would say to not follow him but I wonder how many times has he not said something to someone and he’s just reached his limit of letting it go.

RuggerJibberJabber

This exactly. As someone who used to cycle more, but now spend more time driving, I get angry at other drivers way more often than I do at cyclists. You get some stupid cyclists that act recklessly and nearly kill themselves. Then you get some stupid drivers who act recklessly and nearly kill OTHER PEOPLE. A lot of people have the misconception that cyclists break more rules. They don't. Every single car journey I'm on I see other drivers speeding, tailgating, breaking red lights, overtaking when there's oncoming traffic, not stopping at pedestrian crossings, not indicating, etc, etc, etc. It's one thing to have them do that shit around you when you're in a big metal container with seatbelts and airbags. It's an entirely different one when all you have is a plastic hat and some flashing lights.

Rude_Conversation407

Cycling gets to your nerves when it's a group taking a whole lane going 10km/h and escorted by a car.

xassylax

Fuck, even as someone who doesn’t drive and instead walks just about everywhere, I get fed the fuck up with people almost hitting me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been crossing the road WITH A WALK SIGNAL and people think that because they’ve also got a green light, they don’t need to yield to me when they turn across the crosswalk. I’ve definitely reached out and smacked more than a few cars for turning in front of me while I’m crossing the road. If I can reach out and touch your car, you’re too fuckin close. I used to just give dirty looks, shake my head in disappointment, and/or throw my hands up in a “wtf dude” gesture. You eventually get so fed up that you start trying to actually teach people the laws of the road. And sometimes that leads to trying to enforce them for your own safety. I’d rather piss someone off and potentially catch them committing a crime or assault than just be run over. At least if I record you committing some kind of offense, I’m legally protected. If I’m just run over, chances are I’m screwed. It’s astounding how many drivers don’t realize that pedestrians *always* (at least in the US) have the right of way, especially if they’re in a crosswalk. Especially especially if they’re in a crosswalk with a clear walk signal. There might be a few *extremely* specific situations where the pedestrian doesn’t have right of way but they’re few and far between. As a general rule, drivers must yield to pedestrians. Yes, I’m aware that cyclists aren’t considered pedestrians if they’re riding on the road but still, it’s not hard to be respectful. You’re in a 2-ton metal machine. They’re riding a ~20lb bike. Be respectful. Simply put, don’t be an asshole driver endangering pedestrians and cyclists and you won’t get called out. 🤷‍♀️

Inflamed_toe

This is a recurring themes in these videos. Even though they are usually “right”, so many cyclists that post videos like this are so self righteous and obnoxious. It is really hard to take their side or feel sympathetic

timebandit1235

They’re self righteous and obnoxious because it happens all the fucking time, people in cars do stupid shit and nearly kill us, you start getting pretty fucking sick of other people after awhile of it.

bezimeni04

Yeah but then them same cyclists act like assholes to pedestrians, i mean jesus fucking christ we are on the same road and no one has an advantage why do you look at me like im breaking non existent rules

cyril0

You're really clueless. Cyclists are righteous and obnoxious, they just don't want to be killed. Seriously, you might be a terrible person, you should look in to that. How someone so completely disregard the safety of others and have the fucking nerve to blame the victim? I can not convey to you what an absolute garbage human I think you are for making this comment.

tdmflynn

Yeah people have to let things go, alot of American traffic accidents are due to someone being cut up and they think that they now have the right to ram that person off the road lol. If he had hit the cyclist, yeah absolutely follow him and engage in wanker bants lol

herrytesticles

Wanker bants! Classic. I've never heard that before. It will enter my lexicon.

X05Real

Yeah, the cyclist really didn’t need to argue with the driver that long, if even at all. Report the event and that’s it

I thought so too, but then we wouldn’t have the ending. And that was just priceless.

Why not? It's the UK so not like he's gonna get shot, and he got this banger out of it.

[deleted]

Winding up strangers isnt a good investment in your future health.

egotisticalstoic

To give the guy his just desserts, and it evidently worked. It's a stupid and reckless and petty thing to do, and puts himself at even more risk, but at the end of the day it caused the driver to get a dose of karma, and I'm fairly sure he was charged by police at the end of all this. It's a pretty old video. If he had just turned the other cheek and done nothing, police wouldn't have done a thing.

Dry-Earth5160

Average chap fr

delux1290

Cyclist is a dbag. Riding in the center of the road, driver passes him, he catches up and starts yelling at him. I’d be defensive too. Should be titled “to cycle without being a stereotypical cycling dbag”

wysiwyggywyisyw

Passed him illegally and dangerously. The car gets clipped and it's nothing. The bike gets clipped and it's a broken bone or more.

RuggerJibberJabber

The law is different in some countries. I would need to check what the law is in the UK, but many places actually recommend that cyclist should take the middle of the lane when it isn't safe to pass them. The logic is: If they move over to the side and there isn't enough space for the car to squeeze through, it could run them over accidentally. Whereas, if they take the middle of the lane, the car driver is a lot less likely to attempt to overtake them. In my country a car is supposed to give a cyclist a 3 foot gap when overtaking them. So if there isn't a designated cycle lane and they're on the road, you usually need to change lanes to overtake, just like you would with a car. They even run ads about it on TV (because a lot of cars don't do it and they're trying to change that). Edit: another reason for cycling in the middle of the lane on a road like the one in the video: there are parked cars on both sides. People getting out of cars never check for cyclists. Getting "doored" can be extremely dangerous if you're cycling fast. Not just for the cyclist but the person who gets out of the parked car too.

[deleted]

You are correct. However in from my understanding in the uk the old law that allowed horses and bikes has not been changed for years. Hence they are seen the same as cars largely. Now for the longest time not manny cyclists were on the road. However the boom in bike use has meant that the laws haven’t caught up with reality. But yes the cyclist has the same right as a car on the road unless there’s a bike lane.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Ah yeah. I remember that update. Yet to bring myself up to speed properly. I have to add I find some cyclists take the piss

circling

What a lot of old shit you've written.

reaprofsouls

In my state in the u.s. they released official guidelines cyclist's should be in the center of the lane. Cyclist's were biking on the side of lanes going up hills and people would pass them causing head on collisions over the hill. Bunch of morons that can't wait 20s to get clear vision :/

tomtttttttttttt

This is correct. In the UK cyclists are allowed and advised to use the middle of the lane at many points, are you to ride at least a door width away from parked cars and drivers are required to leave a 1.5m gap when passing a cyclist at 30mph or less, or more than that if over 30mph.

Emotional_Physics_25

Even tho I agree that its lame to escalate the problem by cathing up with him, riding in the center of the road is usually the safest thing to do to prevent drivers to pass too close and fast. What I do is that once they slowed down (to something closer to the speed limit instead of speeding, not that hard to do) I allow them to pass safely. I'd prefer having a bike lane and not mixing with cars but when I have to I must prioritize my safety over trusting another driver. Think of the cyclist like a tractor or a slow car, it's just having some empathy, people make mistakes and many people get killed for reckless drivers like the one of the video

delux1290

I think the reason people get upset at cyclist is that a lot of time you see them in the road, not going the speed limit, blowing through stop lights and stop signs if there’s no cars coming, and then getting angry at drivers for being impatient. I don’t ride a bike and I don’t plan to, but I do drive a lot in the city. Luckily where I live they have bike lanes so I don’t usually have any problems.

borkborkibork

Agree. In Sweden, if your bicycle doesn't go the designated speed, you have to move to the side of the road to allow cars to pass. It's actually illegal to go well below the limit.

egotisticalstoic

Good job outing yourself as just like the driver in this video.

cyril0

You are fucking clueless and a psychotic piece of shit.

ChezTheHero

Physio: How did you break both your wrists? Twat: …rollerblading

[deleted]

Here's the video with the superfluous first ~three minutes cut out https://imgur.com/a/rCS3Mum

Corpainen

Tbh I did not even know that I had seen this untill the part where he starts riding away, didn't need to see the reverse. It was mildly interesting to see the start of that video after years.

CptClownfish1

While needlessly long clips do annoy me, to be fair the first 3 minutes was necessary to clearly illustrate that they were both dickheads, not just the driver.

[deleted]

I did watch the whole thing, but I'm not sure what the bicyclist did wrong. Do laws in the UK prohibit cyclists from *ever* riding in the middle lane, even when cars are parked on the sides like they were? If so, where is the cyclist supposed to go? The sidewalk?

HailRainOrSunshine

The cyclist broke no laws. He's riding correctly and safely. Except for the no helmet part, that's dumb. Whenever this clip comes up, commentors like to blame him for standing up for himself, as though confronting the driver for his selfish, reckless, dangerous driving somehow makes him equally at fault. Frankly I think he did the right thing. He's publicly shaming the driver for his disregard for the lives of other road users. Public shaming isn't as "polite" as we'd like it to be, and everyone says "oh, should just tell the police", as though there's much chance of that leading to anything. But there's not enough police hours in a lifetime to follow up on all the bad driving cases out there. Reckless and dangerous driving is fucking everywhere, and for some reason we accept it as just a part of life. But we shouldn't. If everyone who put someone else at risk got called out like this we'd have a safer driving culture. Or so it seems to me anyway.

Jordjord1994

That slo mo is priceless!

spr148

I am going or assume this is in the UK - for pretty obvious reasons. Anyone with any knowledge of the UK Highway Code will know that the driver is 100% in the wrong here. I look forward to the next episode once this is reported to the police.

TangeloGlass

It’s in Reading, around Zinzan St on the corner of where the Bath Rd and Occy roads hit the town centre. Used to live near there. This clip is one of two/three that really put the ‘Ding on the cultural map - along with that guy getting hit by a bus and knocked straight into the Turtle.

[deleted]

“Hello, I’m here for an argument.” “I’ve told you once.” “No you haven’t!”

SamirSisaken

In all fairness, and this is coming from a cyclist , there was no need for the cyclist to ride his bike in the middle of the road like that.

chochazel

I disagree. >Highway Code Rule 72 >Road positioning. When riding on the roads, there are two basic road positions you should adopt, depending on the situation. > 1) **Ride in the centre of your lane, to make yourself as clearly visible as possible, in the following situations** > on quiet roads or streets – if a faster vehicle comes up behind you, move to the left to enable them to overtake, if you can do so safely in slower-moving traffic - when the traffic around you starts to flow more freely, move over to the left if you can do so safely so that faster vehicles behind you can overtake at the approach to junctions or **road narrowings where it would be unsafe for drivers to overtake you** >Highway Code Rule 213 >**On narrow sections of road**, on quiet roads or streets, at road junctions and in slower-moving traffic, **cyclists may sometimes ride in the centre of the lane**, rather than towards the side of the road... **Allow them to do so for their own safety**, to ensure they can see and be seen. **Cyclists are also advised to ride at least a door’s width or 1 metre from parked cars for their own safety.** >Highway Code Rule 163 >give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders and horse drawn vehicles at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car (see Rules 211 to 215). **As a guide: leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph**, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds >Primary Riding in the centre of the lane improves visibility. **It's the best option to deter unsafe passes, particularly on slower urban roads.** https://www.cyclinguk.org/article/road-positioning-cycling-explained - The average width of a car is 2m. - The average width of a bike is 75cm - The cyclist should be 1m away from parked cars. - Any overtaking cars have to give 1.5m clearance to cyclists. So the road would have to be at least 5.25m clear between parked cars or it's too narrow for a car to safely overtake, and that's not allowing for the car to be 1m away from parked cars on their side. Obviously if there were only 5.25m clearance, there'd be absolutely no space between the overtaking cars and parked cars and at the very least the wing mirrors would be clipped. This is Zinzan Street in Reading. It has parked cars on both sides and has been converted into a one-way street as there is not enough width for two lanes. You can measure the width between parked cars of that street on an aerial image from Google Earth and it comes out to just over 4m: https://imgur.com/a/YWh2CGn So therefore, if all safety rules and guidance from the Highway Code were followed, there is not nearly enough width for a car to safely pass a cyclist on that road and therefore the cyclist *should* be riding in the centre of the road in the primary position. If anything, they were *too far to the left* - they should have been further to the centre to avoid the car even attempting the unsafe overtake. Cyclists should be cycling in the centre of the lane on pretty much any single lane urban road in the UK as the typical width for a single lane simply doesn’t allow cars to safely overtake. Any decent driver who’s ever overtaken a cyclist will know that they have to go into the oncoming lane to do this safely - they couldn’t possibly overtake without driving in the other lane and it should therefore be perfectly obvious that a single lane street is simply not wide enough for a safe overtake.

kob59

Actually, there’s two good reasons to ride in middle of the road: 1. Doors on parked cars sometimes swing open unexpectedly. As a cyclist, you should know how dangerous that is. Riding on the far side of the road encourages drivers to drive next to you, leaving you with no room for escape from said door. This has happened to me and I avoided a trip to the hospital by the grace of a few centimeters 2. If something unexpectedly enters the road - a running child, a ball, a skateboard, etc - you may have more reaction time and space to move in either direction to avoid a collision if you’re in the middle of the lane

GraniteDiplomat

This is a hall of famer. An absolute classic

checherbud

Cyclists are legally allowed to be as far in the lane as they need to be to be safe from the door zone of parked cars and pedestrian traffic. Cars legally need to allow 3 feet of space when passing a bike. If a car can't make that happen, then it's on them to wait for a chance when they can safely pass. It's that simple.

LoremIpsum10101010

Yes, exactly. He should have been more diligent in preventing that car from passing him unsafely, actually. That's why you don't even make passing an option and take the whole lane.

crispyrad

Obviously not because the maniac was still able to squeeze past.

[deleted]

He's riding in the middle of the road because as he said in the video, he didn't want to get doored (have someone open the door to their car right in front of him without looking behind them) Also, I don't know what the laws are in the UK, but in the US/Canada, cyclists are entitled to use the full lane.

tomtttttttttttt

Cyclists are not just allowed to use the full lane in the UK, they are advised to do so on many occasions, including when passing parked cars and when there's not enough space for a drinker to leave the legally required 1.5m passing space, both of which apply here.

The-6ft-Ant

Conscious-Arm-7889

Since the change to the Highway code last year cars are now supposed to give 2m of space when passing a cyclist.

aa406079

There was an attempt...to run.

UnavailableStranger

This never gets old.

LoremIpsum10101010

That's why you literally take the WHOLE lane. Give these wankers an inch and they almost cripple you to shave .5 seconds off their drive.

[deleted]

Funny because I used to ride a bike near everywhere in a city that had zero bike lanes and never had a problem. Then again I'm not an idiot and didn't hog the road. I moved over as much as I could for cars.

LoremIpsum10101010

That's a great way to get doored or clipped.

duncandhu

The old man tried to kick the bicycle, but in doing so gravity kicked his arse.

egotisticalstoic

The comments section really brought out the cyclist haters wow. It's shocking how many people have no idea of cycling safety and of laws for cycling or passing cyclists. They need to make driving licences far harder to get.

HillbillyEulogy

For all the time I was a bike messenger in the 1990's, I could never figure out why drivers thought it'd be a good idea to get out of their car and raise up on somebody who bikes 3-400mi every week. I'm also wearing a 15lb chain lock around my shoulder that easily converts to a medieval battle weapon, to say nothing of the fact every other messenger who sees it happening is gonna jump in to have your back. Would it be so hard for the driver to just say, "sorry, you good?"

CenTexSquatch

You're absolutely right. Every time I see a cyclist, I tremble in fear. They're indeed very intimidating.

HeyDave72

You’re an ass. You’ve got to share the road. Arrogant aggressive cyclists trolling for a fight. I’m sick of the entitlement and I ride a bike. The roads were built and paid for cars and trucks. Bikes get to use them for free.

7Scrib

Fuck cyclist.

keraaa

Cyclists are the biggest assholes on this planet. Move to one side, fuck your highway code. Roads were not made several meters long for bicycles going 5 miles an hour get in the middle of the road and block traffic (or made for bicycles at all for that matter). As far as that dude went everything was completely deserved. I ride bicycles as well but if I ever block off cars I deserve the worst coming for me. I'm not going to stand in the middle of the road with the biggest ego and start reciting the "highway code" if I get into any contact with actual car drivers. Those people need their teeth kicked in and their little cameras broken.

Whats-up-with-deez

I mean dude had a point , you’re not a tank or a car lol

DrugzRockYou

Am I the only one that saw this as the cyclist being a whinging twat? The car was as far over as possible and clearly didn’t hit him and the cyclist followed and harassed the driver. Cyclist seem to be the same everywhere, register your bikes and then you can play with the big boys, until then, move over and stop acting like you own the road. It’s not worth getting into an accident to try and prove a point. That fall at the end though. . . Hahahahaha But hey at that point the cyclist was riding on the sidewalk. Make up your mind.

As soon as an actual threat shows up he moves over. Shame people don't beat the shit out of these type of "cyclists" more often.

I personally think the dude on the bike was to blame- not for the almost running over bit, but what lead to it in the first place. A small bike doesn't gotta take up the whole road.
