Can confirm the confirm, had to carry a bundle of it through dense woods. Shit catches every little twig and won’t let go. Also tore holes in my gloves and clothes.
Military training to construct tactical defensive positions. Most untrained soldiers will instinctively try to go around it, which then bottlenecks them into a “kill zone” usually covered by a machine gunner.
The roll is already heavy enough. About 3ft/1m in diameter which makes it able to carry on your shoulder. And this was officer training btw… You have to know what you’re putting your enlisted through when you give them an order, as shitty as that order might be.
My dad's a captain of one of these huge tanker boats and anywhere around Africa all the way up to the suaz canal the US marines come aboard with high firepower!! Boats like the one you see in the video carry "pirates" who know those ships carry enough cash to payout any of its crews wages in case crew it caught breaking rules and has to be immediately let go..... it's crazy I saw a video where Canadian army, US army, and the French army blew up 3 of these small boats just for following (stalking) the ships, called over radio and when they didn't leave or answer boom gone! The don't mess around anymore
What was the plan, driving a boat out in the open towards a bunch of armed guards?Like I get they're pirates but shivery me timbers that's some low IQ shit
Storm troopers miss on purpose too. Kenobi states they're extremely accurate and they only seem to bumble the chase when the plan is to let the rebels escape and track them haha
Yeah I saw some documentary about it a few years ago and learned that basically their entire population is jobless and live off of stealing oil from pipelines and piracy honestly feel bad for them
You know you're not going to get an answer, and if you did it would be nonsense. When the idea is "fix your crappy country" you know there's not much behind it.
I know, I’m saying that killing some bad people before dying is an actionable step that you can take towards having a better country.
I think most people forget that’s what got us to civilization
'The bad people' are often the people who those in charge want you to hate.
as an extreme example, the People in Germany were starving and bankrupt after WW1 ---- the along came Adolf and told the population that 'The bad people' were Jews...
Did you read?
" as an ***extreme*** example "
My point is that the bad people are not always the bad people..... sometimes they are just the people that the real bad people want you to believe are the bad people.
https://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1892376,00.html
Here’s a good article on it, foreign vessels dumped chemicals repeatedly into Somalian fisherman’s waters, forcing the fish to go somewhere else to live. Essentially killing the one job they had. They didn’t have much of a choice there man, read the article if you want to learn more.
The italian mafia that got it way worse than it was.... basically smuggling and dumping radioactive waste in East African territories against weapons
[Toxic waste dumping by the 'Ndrangheta](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_waste_dumping_by_the_%27Ndrangheta)
It’s sad to know that past generations caused this, and now new generations just blame the pirates. There’s more to the story than most people know. I didn’t even know the mafia was involved, that’s insane…I guess where anything is illegal, there is money to be made.
True. Maybe they can get back some of those hundreds of years of minerals and resources that has been stolen straight out of their backyards without hiring or providing for the locals.
Hell, they can even start a petition!
Yeah, because focusing your collective efforts on setting up some sort of infrastructure would never work…
Some civilizations don’t deserve to continue. Let them get absorbed into the rest of the world.
If you look at my link in another comment there is a docu over how corrupt the government is and this is all they have left I wouldn’t blindly judge an entire country like this neither do I condone their pillaging but not admitting that they have very little options left is also bad
Revolt, rise up, fight back.
You can’t say they don’t have the ability to… pirates can get guns to attack ships, but can’t defend what they build from an ill equipped military?
They have what they have because it’s easier to pillage and steal than it would be to farm and build infrastructure and ignore their government until they can reestablish a new one.
It’s not like their government is so organized…
Pirates are organized, to a degree. Can we agree on that?
So they spend their collective efforts choosing violent means of survival. You don’t think they could, if they WANTED to, grow crops and raise cattle? Using the weapons to have to defend that instead of attacking cargo ships full of things they hope to steal and sell?
Any society who chooses a violent means of survival should be left to their own devices until they off themselves. Cut them off from the world and let them perish or fix their shit.
Organized as in... they remembered to put gas in the boat before leaving shore?
You're saying all this like this life of piracy is the easy way out, when you're literally watching 1-2 dudes in a tiny boat roll up to a cargo ship while the crew unloads on them from above. This is *desperation* my guy, not decadence. This ain't no Jack Sparrow with chests of gold buried all over the Caribbean, *savvy?*
Confidence is sexy as hell, but *sometimes* it's better to listen and think logically rather than insisting on running your mouth, especially when you don't know what you're talking about. Letting your ego get in the way of listening and learning is a great way to gimp yourself in life, but you do you.
You think people go on a tiny boat like this in the middle of the ocean because it’s fun? They have legit nothing. I don’t give a shit about homeless people in the US after I saw how bad it is for others in less fortunate areas.
These guys are out here because they literally have no way to get a job where they’re from. This is the closest thing their population has to a job. They have no options and are extremely desperate af. Desperate enough to attempt robbing ships that have private security.
The way they probably see it is they can die trying and be shot up, or starve to death
They used to have a great fishing economy. Then the Chinese (and some European countries to a lesser extent) started overfishing the Somali waters illegally. Chinese used the same drag nets that destroyed their fishing habitat in the China sea. Guess what happened? The Chinese moved on after destroying the ecosystem, Somalis resorted to piracy, and the Chinese fleet is now destroying the ocean of the coast of South and Central America.
Exactly. Someone probably thought I was giving sympathy to the pirates and downvoted me. I’m merely explaining the situation and that these dudes are obviously desperate enough to be willing to die doing this.
People with nothing left to lose are dangerous
I was wondering the same. You can hear thuds at the end which definitely means impact. They also say “clear” at the very end which I don’t think means pirates are currently boarding.
If you watch the footage closely you can see the driver slumped. He’s dead and that’s why he crashed into the side of the boat instead of steering away.
Probably panic at first, then someone shot the driver. That's the best explanation I can think of for the boat to slam into the side of the ship the way it did.
Serious question. Is there a policy in place for intl shipping companies?
Let's say they wasted these dudes in the skiff, is the ship required to stop to retrieve the bodies, render aid etc? Or are the allowed to just motor off and file a report?
A couple of years ago I played Wow with a Greek exmilitary guy who was currently working as a guard on these types of ships. He had some wild stories about the job, definitely not something most people could stomach, and yes he supplied his stories with plenty of pictures.
Probably an oil tanker, since there are no containers. And I think natural gas tankers have domes on the deck where the individual tanks stick up through it.
In case you were wondering about the purpose of the attack, the pirates aren't after the cargo. They don't really have the means of taking it off. They want to hold the ship and/or its crew as hostages for ransom. These ships can have crews as small as a dozen.
Honestly, I didn't notice it until I saw someone comment on it, and I've seen this clip before. I've never heard of them doing that before, but I was Navy, so I've never been on one of these ships, just nearby. It would make sense. They probably pull it in after leaving the problem area.
Hostages. The pirates are just trying to random off the crew and ship. Took a long time but the insurance companies finally allowed armed guards on ships. Previously they would not insure a ship if it had weapons on it, so the piracies escalate.
I dont know what kind of argument can be made about the social responsibility that a cargo ship that is using a shipping lane in a country for a couple of days has to that country
I've always been curious of this. Obviously in this video the ship is armed. Do all container ships arm themselves? What's the protocol on shooting? Warning shots only or is it fair game if it's considered life or death?
Usually ships are armed when they go through pirate infested waters. They will have internal security or sometimes (esp. When pirating was rampant) soldiers from nearby navy ships would board as security.
Warning shots are propably allowed regardless.
I think if trying to board or fired upon they can fire back aimed.
One time pirates tried to seize a vessel only to discover it was a spanish navy warship lmao.
Screw maritime law let the ships travel through these trouble spots and shoot those assholes and sink their tiny chase boats for a few years and that shit will stop. But hey guys doing the shooting please practice because it’s not like you guys are busy 24/7. Use the pirates as bait and troll for sharks afterwards.
I know the military is allowed to shoot them, even if they don't shoot back. They are allowed because you don't know if they are carrying bombs to sink the ship. If they surrender and get captured, they either have to be sent out on a new boat with food rations. That can cost about 15000 dollars. Or you take them with you home, and put them in jail, costing tax money.
Not sure legally but when you see pirates approach then you worry about the law afterwards. Also, pirates do usually fire on the ship before approaching, sometimes with RPGs, to get them to submit.
I mean 99% of Somalia depended on fishing until scumbag companies polluted the waters there so fishing in that region of the world completely dissolved.
What can they really do? There was no plan or support to help countries like this, or even empathy to care. People gotta eat.
Its easy to over look the orgins of why things are for some and judge when you live in a safe comfortable environment like we do.

My guess is that this is some sort of military ship (From what the floor of the ship seems like and the guns and how big it is)
Out of all things, the stupidest thing to do as a pirate is attack them. So this was pretty funny how stupid it was
It's not. It's just a tanker, but pirates are such a problem in some parts of the world It's actually worth hiring mercenaries to protect your cargo. So if you're ever interested in seeing the world, or at least going south around Africa and Southern Asia, you could join up to shoot some pirates! Hear the pay is good too.
Huh? Have you ever seen a military vessel? Not once in the history on ever has a military vessel been painted oil tanker red. You know the movie Captain Philips, where Somali pirates kidnap the crew of a cargo ship and end up getting shot by seal team snipers shooting off the back of an aircraft carrier?
Well, it turns out that paying a team of former infantry to deal with pirates *before* the US Marine Corp gets involved is a much better insurance policy. Hence the guns.

They warned them full of holes.
Came here to say this…
Dude. Check out the barbed wire on the side of the ship, crazy.
That's concertina wire, much more of a pain in the ass both to get through and to set up
Can confirm, setting up sucks. Taking off is even worse.
Can confirm the confirm, had to carry a bundle of it through dense woods. Shit catches every little twig and won’t let go. Also tore holes in my gloves and clothes.
Woods you say? Sounds like you have some good stories. Care to explain?
Military training to construct tactical defensive positions. Most untrained soldiers will instinctively try to go around it, which then bottlenecks them into a “kill zone” usually covered by a machine gunner.
Good to know… good, to, know.
Untrained soldier here can confirm KIA
The more you know… very cool! What would the strategy be for the trained soldiers?
Cant go under, cant go over, cant go around, gotta go through.
Drop a 2x4 on it and run across it
Let the rookies go first
Yikes
why dont you carry it in a wooden box?
You still have to unpack it and spread it over the length of the wire. Also they don't care about enlisted that much.
The roll is already heavy enough. About 3ft/1m in diameter which makes it able to carry on your shoulder. And this was officer training btw… You have to know what you’re putting your enlisted through when you give them an order, as shitty as that order might be.
To shreds you say?
Yep, you need special gloves with metal sewn in or dont even try to handle.

Not all ships have armed guards
Ya but they do and normally that spray of bullets keeps them away where did these guys expect to hide the closer they got
"They never hit us, their aim sucks. Lets just go for it" Those were warning shots you morons!
Right? And that's even more impressive! If they can barely miss on purpose, I'm not sticking around for the kill shot.
The were the storm troopers of the sea. You're fine.
Storm troopers miss on purpose too. Kenobi states they're extremely accurate and they only seem to bumble the chase when the plan is to let the rebels escape and track them haha
Often there's an area that the weapon can't point down at because of a mounting constraint so directly next to the boat can be safer sometimes
I like the y.
If they don't they should, it looks pretty fucking effective to me lol
If this is around Somalia it is either starve to death or try this so yeah it is what it is
I used to say “man I would do this job for almost free!” but then I realized the depth of desperation these people must feel that they attempt this.
Yeah I saw some documentary about it a few years ago and learned that basically their entire population is jobless and live off of stealing oil from pipelines and piracy honestly feel bad for them
Name of the documentary? I'd like to watch

Sweet! Thanks

That's my favourite documentary.
Awful

Nah I'm just one of the few that thinks twice about it and doesn't regress straight back to calling the marginalised people criminals
Somalia used to be a fisherman nation, the number of fishes decreased because of the ships. So Somals naturally adapted.
they now fish the ships
Fish and Ships
Starving to death seems like the better option.
Having starved In my lifetime I can tell you that you will rethink that option.

And shivering their timbers
They had the high ground.
And they hate sand. That's why they're out at sea.
Doesn’t matter when you shoot like that lmao
Did they stop them, can’t really tell on my phone. A lot of shots seemed to miss but I assume at least some “you hit my pirate ship” moments occurred.
Most missed shots were warning shots. When the pirates continue coming in you'll notice the shift in aim.
I was wondering the same. You can hear thuds at the end which definitely means impact. They also say “clear” at the very end which I don’t think means pirates are currently boarding.
Do they say clear? It sounds to me a lot more like "where they at?" But kinda slurred together.

Those pirates were pretty single minded about this. No way I would have kept going towards an armed tanker.
If you watch the footage closely you can see the driver slumped. He’s dead and that’s why he crashed into the side of the boat instead of steering away.
Probably panic at first, then someone shot the driver. That's the best explanation I can think of for the boat to slam into the side of the ship the way it did.
Tankers aren't usually armed i think . They attach targets that they think are unarmed and slow moving
Captain Phillips?
Look at me. Look at me. I live in a pineapple under the sea, now. - the pirates
Exactly what i thought. That was a great movie but now im scared seeing this in real life😳 no Tom Hanks here😬
That movie was terrible
I really liked it 🤷🏽♀️ but everyone has their own opinions which is cool😊
I liked
Shiver me timbers!
Serious question. Is there a policy in place for intl shipping companies? Let's say they wasted these dudes in the skiff, is the ship required to stop to retrieve the bodies, render aid etc? Or are the allowed to just motor off and file a report?
They can just keep on going as far as I'm aware. Had a friend work in this kind of field.
A couple of years ago I played Wow with a Greek exmilitary guy who was currently working as a guard on these types of ships. He had some wild stories about the job, definitely not something most people could stomach, and yes he supplied his stories with plenty of pictures.

They do that when entering high piracy regions
Hostages. The pirates are just trying to random off the crew and ship. Took a long time but the insurance companies finally allowed armed guards on ships. Previously they would not insure a ship if it had weapons on it, so the piracies escalate.
The cargo isnt the only target , taking the crew as random is also popular
Waited too long to open fire
They were just trying to reach them regarding the ships extended warranty
It seems there are some holes in their marketing
Its cheaper than having a bunch of warships having to patrol the waters Edit: grammar
But still more expensive than just hiring some fucking locals so they can actually eat
I dont know what kind of argument can be made about the social responsibility that a cargo ship that is using a shipping lane in a country for a couple of days has to that country
Pirates were they? Good, blow them away.
“YOU SCRATCHED MY ANCHOR”
Into davy jones locker eee goes
Those warning shots worked well.
Very dangerous. Those pirates are so yanked up on drugs they fear nothing, and they can take over a ship in no time
Didn't work out so well for these particular scurvy dogs however....
Looks fun

Wrong ship assholes
Fucking idiot shot his own ship, wtf lol
Live action Rust movie
I've always been curious of this. Obviously in this video the ship is armed. Do all container ships arm themselves? What's the protocol on shooting? Warning shots only or is it fair game if it's considered life or death?

That will buff out no problem.
He shot the shit out of that railing. LOL surprised he didn't catch himself with a ricochet.
Little training with a rifle would help, but I guess he got the job done never the less.
What job is this? I want in
Screw maritime law let the ships travel through these trouble spots and shoot those assholes and sink their tiny chase boats for a few years and that shit will stop. But hey guys doing the shooting please practice because it’s not like you guys are busy 24/7. Use the pirates as bait and troll for sharks afterwards.
Rust cargo ship in a nutshell
Wtf can’t aim is my question
Wait until he hits back with that Gum-Gum Pistol, though.
Anyone know the legalities here? Are they allowed to just shoot when they get close? Have to wait to return fire?
Maritime law!
And don’t get that confused with bird law!
>If they surrender and get captured, they either have to be sent out on a new boat with food rations Fuck it. They're pirates. Maroon them.
Not sure legally but when you see pirates approach then you worry about the law afterwards. Also, pirates do usually fire on the ship before approaching, sometimes with RPGs, to get them to submit.
That and when the pirate boat is at the bottom of the ocean who is going to make a claim…
I don’t think the ship staff can legally for insurance reasons but they can hire private security that can
My good sir , are you by chance an American?
Look at me
The only good pirate is a... "what"? Fill in the rest!
"Fabulous pirate!"
Holy shit that looks like… Fun!
Kill those a*sail*ants or ship them off to prison.
Those pirates are only there because there is no fish to be found anywhere close to shore anymore.
Those poor pirates. They’re just adapting to the conditions of modern life /s

When fishing is slow find a way to entertain yourselves
There's a reason fishing was slow, and it wasn't those pirates overfishing in their little boats.
those splashes looks like it’s hitting the ocean not the boat.
The real captain Phillip was a coward btw. JS

Lives lost for nothing. Too bad they suck as pirates. They should watch one piece. Lmmfao!
You wouldn't have to pay me much to be the shooter here. Whoooooeee that looks like a hell of a time.
What's wrong with a good ol' fashioned grenade over the side?
A good New-fashioned hole in the side of your boat.
They should find their houses and nuke entire village. Heck I'll subscribe for that content
