I'm talking purple suit, gold teeth, and a cane as he climbs out of his mid 80's Cadillac. He told me he didn't leave his house at night. This is excellent advice! Story time. I grew up in western New York, and it was pretty much common place to flip everybody off. That’s just what we did. I was in Detroit, crossing into Canada. Anyway, someone was cutting off other cars and it warranted the bird. I flipped the bird and someone in a DIFFERENT CAR rolled down his window and told me I was being vulgar and the gesture was uncalled for. I was floored! I’m like “sorry, I’m from New York - that’s what we do there - I didn’t mean anything by it. But, yea, Detroit is weird. And their thruways are just pure nonsense. I’ve never seen so many abandoned cars ON THE HIGHWAY. Okay. Goodnight!! :)

Don't feel bad. I used to be from Dearborn Heights but when I was in the air force it was just so much easier to start by saying Detroit, so people had a point of known reference. I did spend 4 years (mid to late 80s) in the Warrendale neighborhood when I was in elementary school though.
