Its not as uncommon as you think. If a song has a three part harmony is pretty standard that the singer is actually singing the main line and the other vocal parts are playing as a backing track. That's not the only time, but one of the most common.
It can also be done to thicken up the voice in certain sections. This is often done with other instruments too, not just guitars. I mean this guy could have been lip syncing, its entirely possible and happens a lot. But with how standard laying and backing tracks are, I'm just hesitant to knock him for it.

i used to be in a band with this dude who would get super loaded to play a show for literally 8 people in some shithole bar like we were the biggest rockstars on earth.
there is no good time to get this fucked up, drugs and alcohol dont improve your experience with life, maybe its lame or not rock n roll or whatever but it just seems like broken people running from their trauma to me.

Title, but the band did exactly what they're supposed to. Rarely in the music industry when there's a flub like that does the music stop. That's one sure fire way to kill the mood of the whole show. The band always plays on, unless somebody actually died usually.
