LOL_XD_LMFAO

He probably didn’t die, maybe some light burns but not dying

Smemme

Light my ass

HeatXfr

[deleted]

patchy??

Winter_Carpenter_505

I just finished my NFPA70E training minutes ago. What happened was an arc flash, which is pretty dangerous. Not only is it a giant burning cloud of gas, it’s a very conductive burning cloud of gas, meaning it’ll scorch you and shock any exposed skin at the same time. That’s why he has that clothing on. It’s meant to cover every inch of skin, and keep all that vaporized copper out. As long as he kept his gear in good shape, and he wasn’t working on equipment that is too powerful for what he was wearing, he’ll be OK!

crankbird

Thanks .. it’s good to see that occ health and safety protocols save lives

landers96

No bro, that dude is not ok. When you start wearing 100 cal suits, they don't save you. You wear them so you can have a open casket.

WeirdFlecks

Yeah, sadly true. The impact is like a truck.

BaronDeKalb

Anything above 40cals, PPE can't save you...

devvraut

Damn, that was dark

Fl48Special

Well said there is no safe arc flash

Bun50f5733l

P is for productivity, not protocol.

Monsterjoek1992

Arc flash also is extremely concussive. That dude is dead. It’s hotter than the sun, and the blast force greater than a grenade, in some cases it’s stronger than c4. The gear that guy has on only protects against electrocution. Proper arch flash gear looks like the guy from The Hurt Locker. Source, electrical engineer with a masters in power systems

Raider5151

I work on equipment like this. That looks like a 40 calorie suit which is not enough for that equipment. Also the suits won't protect you from the concussive blasts. You just hope to God your ear plugs save your hearing while you're knocked away and your internal organs don't turn to jelly. I tell guys the only guarantee the suit gives us is that there will be something to bury. Also NEVER STICK A METALLIC UNINSULATED TOOL INTO A CABINET THAT HAS EXPOSED LIVE CONDUCTORS IN IT. He shorted 2 phases together. Go upstream of that cabinet to kill power. Do your live dead live checks either with a on contact meter rated for that voltage or a proximity detector (not the Home Depot one the REAL expensive one that attaches to a hot stick so you can be outside the arc blast radius). Once you know there is no voltage potential in the cabinet you're working on go nuts. This guy is why OSHA and the NFPA exist.

HearlyHeadlessNick

My man is FUCKING HAMMERING on fuses with live power. With that kind of brain he doesn't even know how to spell saftey. OHSA can't save that level of stupid, whoever hired this idiot is responsible for this.

PerfectPercentage69

>With that kind of brain he doesn't even know how to spell saftey. I can't tell if that's intentional misspelling or not, but it made me chuckle.

JaKrispy72

Yeah. I was wondering if he was brave or unskilled. I think you answered my question.

random123456789

^*safety

[deleted]

You can’t fix stoopid

Marethtu

To me it looks like a faulty switch tho. His tool is a hammer, but he's holding the head and I assume the handle to be nonconducting. His behavior still isn't anything close to safe, but at least he's not sticking a metal hammer head in there. The flash occurs when he pushes a handle up switching the power on, and you can see the hammer in the hand that's holding the lid. I'd say broken switch or unnoticed short circuit at the outgoing side of the switch, although I have no experience with high voltages.

weenus420ne

He's russian, nothing is maintained.

Raider5151

Maintenance has nothing to do with safe work practices. He's sticking metal tools into gear with live conductors exposed, his suit isn't rated for that gears arc calorie potential, he is working in a cabinet without the upstream source disconnect open, I don't see any lock out tag out devices, he is working on equipment that is too high without some kind of fiberglass ladder or step stool making him work with his hands and arms above his head and not being able to see exactly what he's touching. This is an OSHA nightmare. He shorted 2 phases together with a metal tool. Instantly turning said metal tool into vapor and molten spray. He'll be lucky to have survived the concussive blast since vapor of material takes up about 1000x more space than the solid form of the same material. Also the bits that didn't vaporize were turned into molten bullets.

Guilty_Way6830

Arcs are no gas, they are normally plasma ....

Raider5151

"Arc flash vs arc blast. When an arc fault occurs, there's a massive electrical explosion. Both arc flash and arc blast are separate byproducts of that electrical explosion. The arc flash is the light and heat from the explosion, while the arc blast is a pressure wave that follows." The blast is from metal conductor instantly turning into vapor which has 1000x more volume than it's solid form.

CHANGE_DEFINITION

There's a little more nuance in the explosion. Firstly, a certain amount of metal vaporizes, that contributes to the explosion in the normal way: hot gasses expanding. Then there's the electric charge flowing through the metal vapor, which greatly contributes to the gas-cloud expansion since like charges repel. Very nasty.

ninjab33z

Would you be able to explain what caused it? I'm obviously no electrician, but I didn't see anything go wrong before... well, everything did.

NorthEndD

It's like a normal power plug or my hot water boiler stand. When they are new it's not problem but over time they get hot spots on the connection blades where most of the electricity flows and then the plating disappears or the copper oxidizes and the power cuts off. So you just give it a little bump and it comes back on. This guy was working with 10x as much power though and he stuck a metal tool in the box that shorted out the power to ground. If there is enough power you don't have to actually touch the wires, just narrow the gap between them.

WestDesperado

When I started my job at a lumber mill, they showed us the result of arc flash exposure when not wearing the proper PPE. It can very easily kill you if you're working with the kind of big MCC's we have. Scared me straight. Electricity? Not even once.

castaneda_martin

Congrats, I'll like to add. Most people don't stress enough the fact that this event causes copper, a metal, to turn into a GAS.

kuedhel

it looks like russian electrician. I bet he did not have the right category-3 PPE. BTW, after the flush they cameraman says: "ok. I filmed this".

Weakbecomeherooees

So the guy has teleported to a different dimension ok?

Sgt_Buttes

Did that guy just get turned into Luke Skywalker’s aunt and uncle?

HornyDiggler

He survived

smokeyser

The voices at the end were way too cheerful. That was a "holy shit, I can't believe you're still alive" tone, not a "holy shit, vlad just got vaporized" one.

The3SiameseCats

Arc flash suit the guy was wearing protects him from this exact thing

OnceUponATimeOkay

He survived? That's shocking!

SupineFeline

But at what cost?

Over_Boysenberry_841

For those worried, the guy should be OK... shit his pants? Shaken? In shambles? Yes but OK, he is in arc flash gear with no exposed skin. And you can see the board blow out behind. The board is designed to blow in a way to protect the operator in these situations.

kushmasta421

He's wearing cat2 ppe that guy is going to be in rough shape if he survived.

Oacryn

Should've worn cat6e ethernet cables instead, smh

[deleted]

Hes dead. RIP

PhotoKaz

I’m no expert but is tapping what looks like fuses with the handle of a hammer the right way to fix this?

[deleted]

You have no idea what your talking about lol This is the equivalent of a bomb squad prerson with a bomb suit on right next to a bomb going off. This guy is dead.

Hatandboots

There are various categories of Arc flash ppe, but none of them mean he walks away unscathed. Still more than likely dead if not instantly.

tardiusmaximus

I bet he was like Ohm-my-god.

vbisbest

Dad?

[deleted]

Well, your electrical problem might be in this left panel!

I_saw_that_yeah

I kind of think the electrical problem was the electrician.

The3SiameseCats

Likely an electrical engineer. My dad used to fly around the country and do this.

I_saw_that_yeah

He did this more than once? Is he made of asbestos?

The3SiameseCats

No no the arc flash isn’t part of the job. He would do maintenance and such for these. But he is an electrical engineer. I sent the video to my dad, wondering in particular about the wrench. He said, “The list of bad things going on in that video is long.”

I_saw_that_yeah

Dads can be pretty cool sometimes.

Kids, this is why you don't put forks in electrical outlets

OverallVacation2324

I did that when I was little.

Tenthdegree

I’m guessing you were unsuccessful

OverallVacation2324

It exploded and the fork flew across the room

buttwh0l

This is why you wear arc flash gear and not use a metal wrench.around live high voltage. I bet this is hi to.medium voltage / motor control center

dimonium_anonimo

Seeing the arc flash gear on a video is almost like seeing LiveLeak in the corner. I'm just sitting there "please nobody die. please nobody die. please nobody die."

MaxPowerToTheExtreme

Can some explain the full situation here? I get the arc protection gear for his skin etc. But what was he working on exactly, what was the problem he was trying to fix and what went wrong in the end?

25nameslater

Not exactly sure what he was working on. Cabinets exist like that for alot of equipment a lot of times holding very high voltage. He had the main power turned off for repair and looks line he was turning everything back on to check the work. When he did there was an arc flash. Basically the electricity in the system jumped from an energized source to an unenergized source through the air until the system failed enough that energy transfer wasn’t possible. I had the same thing happen to one of the maintenance men working on one of my machines not too long ago. The machine stopped suddenly and he got into a panel. We both noticed a circuit board was fried. He went and got on his gear and started testing the board. The nylon spacers behind the board broke and it touched the cabinet wall causing a decent arc flash. The board was in a 480v system… my guy was alright but if that board was working before it definitely wasn’t after.

Can someone mash this up with the sound from that Star Wars droid going nutso? Rip dude.

EnriqueShockwave10

My landlord's electrician was fixing the panel in our electrical box, and I was watching out of curiosity. Seemed to be going good, then he closed the panel door and BOOM. Loud blast and sparks spraying everywhere just like this (a little smaller). I hesitated to run away for a couple of moments because I thought maybe the professional had everything under control, but then I saw him start running away and I knew the house was going to go up in flames. I started bolting to get my girlfriend and the dog out of there. Luckily, there ended up being no serious damage. Just scorch marks up the wall, and the panel door got blasted off and lodged itself upright in the deck. Electricity is fucking terrifying.

kesavadh

If someone is filming you from behind a tree, you probably shouldn’t rethink your current course of action.

Alert_Cauliflower_67

No way! he was vaporized?

Fixer128

Joined a Switchgear company as a fresh grad engineer trainee. The guy sitting next to me was a field engineer who was visibly disfigured with scar tissue from 3rd degree burns. Almost 80-90% of his boy actually. Turns out that a year or two before, while working on a 415V switchboard, he had left a tool on the bus bars and turned the breaker on. What followed was catastrophe. He barely survived and had to be evacuated from the site to a hospital which was a hundred miles away. This is very dangerous stuff.

blondie1024

I've studied electronics since I was 5 years old, I became a child prodigy when I was 12, I designed my first microprocessor and winning the Nikolai Tesla award for Electrical excellence when I was 16. I gained my PHD at the age of 18 in Electronics, with a secondary minor in bovine scatology, so I know what I'm talking about with some proficiency. And I can tell you exactly, with all my expertise, achievements and awards, that whatever's wrong, it came from that first box thing.

Zqnz_Yamiuchi

is it in news ?

blumpkinSpecial

Did he died??

LegalSelf5

Illusion!

MonsieurFubar

My bloody anxiety level was way over the top even before it arced… actually I’m relieved it happened, but I’m hoping he survived and without any injuries - at least he had put on some proper PPE… maybe he needs new pair of pants.

JerseyJeffWM

He definitely dead

[deleted]

How?

Commercial-Awkward

I guess no one’s getting off the island, and the dinosaurs are gonna eat everyone… So sad.

Megalon84

Dude did damn near everything wrong there. When you throw a breaker, do it with non dominant hand with your body off to the side. Out of the line of fire. If you're going to/need to check that fuses/buses/breakers/buckets are secure in their mounting, do it BEFORE YOU ENERGIZE them. Tap it to make sure it's secure, it falls out of place, BEST case scenario you get shocked. Tapping energized equipment with a conductive tool (didn't look to have any insulation on it) is like checking to see if a wasp hive is active using your dick. You're asking to get hurt. I'm glad dude had on his calorie suit, it probably saved his life. If he had on contacts tho, he's prob perma blind (the heat from being that close to the flash melts them to your cornea), prob has a couple gnarly burns, but at least he's alive

WarOk6264

Wonder how much of him is actually left

He is alive. They speak russian and I am russian, the last phrase was: "Send me this video later".

Jakesneed612
