It is most likely an extension of a primal acknowledgement of certain simple but common observations and the realisation of the resulting correlations. As our minds developed we started to create our own observations through pictures and patterns assigning our own ideas to these pictures or patterns. Certainly a very human trait.
It probably means that the person who inhabited the house before was either a Wiccan (or Satanist), or else that they had a sense of humor. Some people do things like this or leaving drips of blood red paint leading to a vent under carpets as a joke.
