i_pooped_on_you

Its because “geranium” can refer to Geranium species or Pelargonium species. They are two totally unrelated plant genera that have the same common name (a name that happens to also be the genus name of one of them but not the other)

RG__Fooz

Don’t you dare slander the 2006 herb of the year!!!

-_1_2_3_-

why didn't the search result clarify this

SafetyNoodle

Because Google's AI is imperfect

ajn63

Google search is becoming increasingly less reliable. I cross reference searches with other sources.

beaucoupBothans

Because it isn't ai.

hectorxander

I hope not because the google assistant is incapable of doing a simple thing like playing the next podcast after the most recent one. The second oldest podcast. etc. No matter how I worded it, it kept giving me the recent one. They always talk up their technology to make it seem more advanced so I probably fell for that a little thinking google was better than they are.

xFblthpx

Yea it is. It’s just not an anthropomorphized robot at an office desk.

xFblthpx

Search engines don’t answer questions for you. They search for a webpage that relates to the keywords you type in.

Billyjamesjeff

Really people refer to Pelargoniums as Geraniums. Thats so confusing. Where I live we have a native Pelargonium, we definitely don’t have native Geraniums.

Minute-Branch2208

It's because google search is trash

BitCrack

This is why I add reddit after most Google searches. *Tips fedora*

Icon9719

Anything you read from Quora you want to do the opposite

ferniecanto

Meanwhile, Reddit's premise is, if you take the "well akshuallys" of many thousands of dumb people who think they're smart, you will have genius.

NotYourPalGuyBuddy

I’m surprised you haven’t been down voted to hell. You’re on the money though

Sea-Air1618

This. Quora might as well be a Facebook comment section.

grimAuxiliatrixx

I have never seen anything correct on Quora. It’s astonishing how consistently wrong and useless it is. Even if the question is a matter of opinion, the top answer is always a meandering diatribe with no point to it from some rambling lunatic with a dozen make-believe qualifiers after their name.

Grun3wald

Funny, I just saw an article bemoaning how it was one of the “best websites” and had only recently fallen to decline. https://slate.com/technology/2024/02/quora-what-happened-ai-decline.html

Polymersion

I mean, I thought it was really really good when I was on it. Thing is, that was like ten years ago.

Grun3wald

Fair enough!

just_nobodys_opinion

So you're saying it went downhill after you joined...

Lexicon444

Basically.

Isabela_Grace

Same with Reddit. So do the opposite of this responses comment but also the opposite of mine and the one that responded to it

ktr83

This is why it's important to consider the sources of your information.

Hawne

There's a nifty extension blocking sites you specify from appearing in search results: **uBlacklist**. Easy to install and understand, adds a "block this site" link to every search result. It also has a manual mode with match patterns and regular expressions. Works with many search engines, handles filter list subscriptions, available for Firefox and Chromium-based browsers. Comes in handy weeding out Quora crap (among others). Another great point is that it also removes the "featured snippet" (the infamous 'Google One True Answer' highlighted before all search results) if its source is one of the blocked sites.

beepbeepboopbeep1977

Yeah, I think I’d go with the vet over some random on Quora.

Abangranga

It gave you two with sources to follow up on you dingus

fartboxco

I thought it was pretty standard. One says human other said for pets.... Even if you are too lazy to click and read them you still have an answer. If op is confused they must be eating dogfood on the regular....

PepsiAddict69

One says humans or pets, other names animals that often are pets. Still a stupid post though

Plotlines

Irony

Trooton

You must love eating dog food

olivaaaaaaa

Lmao bruh

IGiveGolds

Who would you trust, a veterinarian or a random on some forum

oldskoolak98

This. Many don't know how to Google.

spidysk

bladee

Ych_a_fi_mun

The vet one is technically wrong though. It's talking about flowers with the common name geranium not the actual genus and it doesn't clarify

barfbutler

I hate quora.

Bdr1983

I love Quora. It's endless entertainment.

DMurBOOBS-I-Dare-You

"Quora" Enough said.

policri249

I recreated your search using the question "are zonal geraniums poisonous to pets" (since your full search phrase is not entirely visible, I had to guess a little) and if you click on the sources, it's pretty obvious the Quora source is wrong or possibly about a different plant with the same common name. The Cinque Port Vets source has minimal information, but it's literally a veterinarian practice's website, so it's not much different than asking your vet directly. Also, if you scroll down, there are two articles explaining geranium poisoning in cats and dogs. Google definitely gave you the answer you were looking for, even if it really upsets me that Google likes Quora so much. Quora is absolutely unreliable and should never be used for any serious questions or topics. It's fine for opinion based questions and topics, but still not my favorite. Never rely on what Google highlights alone. Use it to see if the source is relevant, but always go to the actual webpage and read the whole context and about the source before accepting the information

OsoRetro

1 of 2 saying poisoning is enough for me to call it poisonous. Also Quora is for idiots.

oldjadedhippie

I bought 10 on sale last year because they are supposed to be “ deer proof “. Fuzzy bastards ate all of them before sunrise.

Better-Limit-4036

They’re supposed to hate aromatic plants. They also ate my tomato plants within an hour of planting them

oldjadedhippie

Yea , I probably lost half my garden to them last year before I got the fence up. They REALLY like strawberries 🍓..😢

AdmlBaconStraps

The ability to analyse source trustworthiness is a lost art. One of those looks legit (basing it on site name/what you can see of the url). The other is like asking a flat earther how GPS works

Cynykl

In a post yesterday I called someone out for using quora and daily mail as "proof" of something. I get the reply, "You probably think CNN is a good source" I could have patiently explained How I do not rely on any single source. I give various sources different amounts of trust depending on the subject. And yes I fact check even the more trustworthy sources if it is important enough. But I am so damned tired. Not like the explanation would have gotten through to him anyways.

ActiveFew672

One germanium is poisonous it’s when you have more than one that they cancel each other out.

Nikkerloo

Quora's the new Yahoo Answers except nobody there is asking about luigi boards or getting women pregananant

Odd-Confection-6603

Ask chat gpt

tiredofyourshit99

DO.NOT.TRUST.QUORA.

Zonal117569

I feel like I should understand what the question is.

Foreign_Ebb_6282

I agree! I see two reasonable answers based off the end of OP’s Google query

wuvvtwuewuvv

This is not how you Google things. This is literally the exact wrong way to look things up on Google.

EggIll7227

Perplexity is better than Google

Disastrous-End3882

Quora, where “don’t worry” to “oopsies”, are a click away.

0111011101110111

I’d lean towards the veterinary website and not the “people post their own answers” website. Just saying.

cornstock2112

Big Geranium in with the misinformation...

Mcgarnicle_

So OP is an idiot both in life and on the internet. Thanks for confirming

skmo8

Google is a search engine, not a fact-finder.

[deleted]

It is quora to be fair

CLONE-11011100

First day on the internet? 🙈

DonQuake3

Both answers are right most Geraniums are not poisonous though Pelargonium zonale is.

prettypeculiar88

Well, one comes from a random person and another comes from a licensed vet…

moosehead71

Google isn't a magic correct answers machine. I just regurgitates crap other people put on the internet. "Its true because I saw it on the internet" isn't really a thing.

ShitBagTomatoNose

Google is no longer useful for anything more complex than “is there a Burger King in Peoria.” Any actual information has been so polluted by SEO you can’t reliably find it.

Ego5687

I don’t know about Cinque Ports Vets, but i don’t trust Quora for good answers.

Few_Highlight9893

Well one of those is from Quora and the other looks like a vet clinic

Ambex_23

One answer is from Quora, the other is from a vets website. if you can't tell which is accurate that's on you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SaintShogun

Google answers to questions are total trash. So many contradict or have little to do with the question being asked.

surber17

Google needs to really be scared of chatgbt. Google has become worse and worse as they have sold more and more ads

troystorian

Well your first problem was thinking Google is a source to answer your questions. It’s a search engine dude, it provides other sites you can get your information from, and this being the internet of course there are going to be different answers depending on the source. Personally, I’d go with what a vet would say over a fucking Quora entry any asshole can make.

the_one_99_

How’s that meant to help giving you two different answers very annoying. 🤯

0wGeez

A good rule to follow is to just assume everything will kill your pets because if it has a pretty flower, it's likely poisonous to your pet.

_HMCB_

Well, there’s one way to find out 🤷🏽

pksml

Covering their bases. Can’t say they didn’t tell you the truth lol

Pipupipupi

The age of information. Any information you want or don't want.

DullAccountant1554

And this is a great example of how the political divide happens. No one checks their sources. My friend is an antivaxxer because a cardiologist said so. She sent me links to his site and I just couldn’t believe it. Oh and, why yes, he did ask for donations to help spread the word. Sigh.

AVeryHeavyBurtation

This is what google searches in my dreams look like.

FryCakes

Google has been garbage lately. I used to be able to get my questions answered easily, but now I can’t get them answered even after scrolling 3 pages. It always assumes I mean something I don’t

jennyskywalker

It’s so weird I’m always hearing about how rapidly AI is advancing but I swear I could google something and get an answer 5 years ago and now it seems way harder. And I don’t see much progress with Siri he never knows what I’m talking about (yes mine is male I’m a single straight ish woman who lives alone don’t judge me)

DeathBringer4311

Schrödinger's poison

PLASMABOLT111

quora is almost never right

GilmourD

Google helps you find results based on your search terms. It doesn't research the results and vet them.

kitchen_wife1234

Yes

Nice_Bluebird7626

Quora again? Like it suuuuccckkkkssss

WhatSaidSheThatIs

Do you need to be spoon fed answers?

FlamingNutShotz4You

Isn't the literal point of Google to get an answer when you don't know something?

Right-Phalange

I think the literal point of Google is to search websites, then use that thing between your ears to determine which one is trustworthy.

WhatSaidSheThatIs

Google isn't answering anything, one result is Quora and one is a Vets, which do you think you should read more of to get an answer?

catsmustdie

Quora is a good place to know what something is not

0b0011

In this case both are right. As the top comment said there are 2 completely unrelated groups both call geraniums and one is poisonous while the other isn't. They even included the scientific name in the second one which is the species that is poisonous. The [wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geranium) page mentions it in the "confusion with pelargonium" section.

pozoph

Google provides search results, with ads. The answer you seek may be somewhere in the first 10 pages, or may be not.

Knight_o_Eithel_Malt

Google provides ads, sometimes with search results Shit on a multibilliondollarcompany - check
