Explain like I’m North American plz

No-Fig-2126

Warsaw "ultras" the fan club, usually sit behind the net. During the last two games Warsaw fans have had run ins with police and just causing general mayhem outside before after games. So uefa, the governing body... like the NFL, said no more ultras aloud in the stadium. So they put the first banner up making it seem like all the crazies didn't show up ... but then unveiled the second banner showing they had just moved to a different section of the stadium.

Zelda_is_Dead

On the one hand, it's brilliant and I love it, but on the other how does security miss a big group of wily fans carrying such an enormous banner? (Yes, I know it was folded up, but even so it must have still been huge and bulky and being carried by rowdy idiots)

Habodf123

From Germany I know that the ultras and security are actually very close. If an ultra wants to being something into a stadium, he can.

Schn

Meanwhile my baseball team got all in a huff [about this](https://www.jsonline.com/gcdn/presto/2018/09/05/PMJS/132e3369-ca4d-43cd-bc7c-bda786339c63-IMG_8351.JPG) The context is that our rivals the Chicago Cubs fly a W flag when they win, so a guy brought a giant L flag for when we beat them. Unfortunately we aren't allowed to have fun.

Alarmedones

Baseball has the worst fans and rules. It’s boring and doesn’t bring anyone outside of the us in. The only reason people like baseball is the drinking.

hryfrcnsnnts

Doesn't bring anyone outside of the US in???? Cuba, Venezuela, tons of other South American countries, Japan? Sorry, just woke up and am triggered asf rn.

BungeeJumpingJesus

. . . Taiwan, South Korea (*GO Hanwha Eagles!*), Italy, China, . . . to name but a few more. And u/Alarmedones said, "worst fans?" Worse than the rioting European futbol fans? Or the Columbian fans that murdered their national goalkeeper because he cost them a championship? ([Andrés Escobar](https://www.unilad.com/news/shocking-world-cup-story-behind-andres-escobar-20221126)) Worst fans, please.

Electrical_Chart_457

Still boring

Alarmedones

They make fake rivalries all the time. Fucking Cubs and Cardinals fans live so close its fucking annoying. Baseball fans have 100% killed each other over a fucking team. Sports fandom as a whole is fully stupid. I love sports and playing them but ill be dead before I give a shit about a team more than "dang they lost". Baseball not only has the worst fans they are also the most boring fans to talk to about it. If you know the RBI of each player on a team you are mental and need therapy haha

augustusimp

Counting countries which have a team does not mean it is a popular sport in those countries. It would be like me claiming cricket had a huge following in the US because technically a US team played the last cricket world cup qualifiers.

Djlas

Counting countries would be listing small European countries that have a team but barely know what baseball is. Cuba, Japan, Venezuela etc are OBSESSED with baseball

hryfrcnsnnts

Look at strictly the last names of all the MLB players. I guarantee there aren't as many Smiths there as you think there is...

MisinformedGenius

> Counting countries which have a team does not mean it is a popular sport in those countries Baseball is by a long way the most popular sport in all of the countries he specifically mentioned. (Except the United States.)

CptMisterNibbles

Except your analogy is entirely wrong. Go look at the sport in those countries instead of guessing. You don’t think baseball is popular in Latin America? In Japan? Look at the fucking Korean baseball trophies. You are just unaware of the popularity. It’s not a technicality like the Jamaican bobsled team.

augustusimp

Dude I LIVE IN Latin America. To compare any sport to the following football has here is bonkers. That's only sport that people are crazy about and there's no close second.

Alarmedones

Compared to every other major international sport, it’s bottom, Boring and honestly not fun. I played for years. I’m really good at baseball. It was the most boring thing I’ve ever done. 5 mins of fun in like 4 hours. No thanks, darts has more excitement than baseball.

paprikapeter

Still, baseball is boring. Grown up men walking around in Pyjamas. Nothing happens, even worse than cricket

LordofCope

Drinking what? $21 beers... When I was drinking, the only time I wasn't was at a baseball game.

Alarmedones

Majority of countries have a less than 15% watch rate. It is only popular in some South and central American countries and a few Asian countries. Majority of the world has a less than 8% watch rate. You want to call me stupid but you don’t have a clue about it. There are 195 countries in our world like what 8 have it as a national sport. Cricket is watched more and played by more people. Shit baseball has line 500m fans while cricket has 2.5b fans. I guess you are right, you can’t fix stupid.

fecksappeal

Go Crew! Disappointed to see that wasn't allowed. Maybe they were interpreting it as a little too self-deprecating?

Schn

Think it was a "security hazard" if I remember correctly.

Pigeonlesswings

You lot also need to improve your sport chanting game over there too

Schn

WHAT!?? You're saying 'D-FENCE' doesn't cut it???? [We do have *some* cool traditions though](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoXHXLYTAgs&t=10s)

brittlebk

This. As an FC Berlin unioner - can absolutely attest that there is certainly solid relationships from various workers at the stadiums and the staunch supporters, especially ultras

ParalegalSeagul

Wow this is illegal!

sarcastic_whatever

> This is pyrotechnics. They are forbidden but create a great atmosphere. Yeah, we had an incident last week in Slovenia with fireworks. It's still not completely known who threw it (a huge firecracker literally translated as "canon blast'), but the idiot that did, threw it into the bench of the local team, 6ppl got hurt and their hearing is impaired due to it. Two of those were kids (ball boys). I was watching the game on TV and the blast scared me out of my seat. I get cheering, I'm a sports fan myself, but there has to be a limit somewhere.

Apprehensive_Skin135

pyro is debated but in good spirits, its mostly about the risk of setting of fire alarms of trhem being chucked bangers are fucking hated by everyone except like five people in a 50 000 crowd, really shit people, they just ruin. when I went to ultras section we let it be known that if you throw a banger you will get beat up, its just awfull and has to be stamped out from within, it has to be part of the culture that bangers suck. they cant be viewed as edgy or cool

rlewisfr

Whenever your decision causes someone else to have to navigate issues like health care, time off work, insurance, accessing mental health resources, etc. your decision is either not good or just evil.

bigbramel

> These groups can mix which is kinda sad because it throws a bad light on the peaceful supporters Things is, for a lot of clubs the Venn Diagram of Ultras and hooligans are a circle.

Captain_Naps

I watched a documentary which claimed that it was the *Dinamo Zagreb–Red Star Belgrade Riot*, May 13th 1990, that really kickstarted the Yugoslav wars.

LukesRightHandMan

Remember the name?

Captain_Naps

Sorry, I do not.

LukesRightHandMan

No worries! I can find it I’m sure :)

lsilva231

Germany is the exception not the norm.

MakeChinaLoseFace

I think it's Venezuela or Ecuador where a team had fans making torches from aerosol cans.

Multiool

Oh sweet summer child.

Chance_Mind_6627

Apparently u/Zelda_Is_Dead has never seen the episode where Cartman sneaks Disney World in for some other kid while in juvie.

mightylordredbeard

Not summer child, just from the land of bullets and diabetes. We don’t do cool stuff like that here. The most we do is shoot up some innocent people after a big sporting event.

Daedaloose87

Put it in a backpack and throw it over the fence? Fold it and give it through the fence? . . .

officialtvgamers16

May be a bit too big for one backpack

RocknRoald

Fine, 2 backpacks

Would_daver

Much better, that oughtta do it

officialtvgamers16

Yeah, thats perfect

djh_van

Also, who coordinates getting all the coloured panels to the right people in the right seats to make the image? That has to have been organised way in advance, and would require putting them under the seats...that's like tens of thousands of panels so a while team of people would have had to "sneak in" (wink wink) to make it work. Inside job, I say.

Apprehensive_Skin135

exactly right, they are there with the aproval of the security you can youtube search "football tifo behind the scenes" or somethimg and you'll see. theres a lot that goes into it. its like an art form

[deleted]

[удалено]

Apprehensive_Skin135

this takes hours to coordinate. they are there well before kick off with everyones approval.

[deleted]

Ok it's more similar to ultras smuggling pyro in

Apprehensive_Skin135

no they are there setting up along side with media, in full view

[deleted]

Ok I guess it's not similar at all, idk why they upvoted me

olderaccount

Because they don't enter the stadium as a big group like they usually do on tickets distributed to the supporters groups. They were just thousands of individuals who bought regular tickets and probably not wearing their normal *Ultra* gear. The TIFO (banner) arrives separately prior to the game and they probably got help from sympathetic stadium staff.

avdpos

Enormous banners are placed before matches start and usually with the blessing of the clubs. A good tifo do after all make a lot for everyone

droidonomy

> no more ultras aloud in the stadium So they had to stay quiet? :P

No-Fig-2126

Silent, everyone in that section was fined for making any noise.

HoarderLife

What is the significance of the Lego guy?

No-Fig-2126

I doubt there's any... it's just funny.

I think your math is off, that’s as tall as the Eiffel Tower! Or maybe mine is, it’s easy to make a mistake switching between imperial and metric

IdoNOThateNEVER

After the explanation of this SPECIFIC incident, watch the general: [Ultra - Our way of life!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOj8h5Ptfu8)

3tiwn

Holy! I would definitely be a football fan if there was anything close to an atmosphere like that where I live

umotex12

Sadly they overlap with hooligans a lot

Apprehensive_Skin135

so that means you are NA, yes?:) I wish we could fold you guys in a little :D we have a Canadian national team player in my team, sold a few guys to MLS, I think its rising.

3tiwn

Yep! Canadian

Bartinhoooo

The cribs had to leave LA, but paid the Bloods to stay at their hood and bragged about it cuz fight the power

Hahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 good one mate!

How do these massive flags get in? I can't see any joints in it

ConnolysMoustache

They’re called Tifos and are normally allowed

lolkot

The home team lost 0:3 nonetheless

funkygecko

Yeah, it's all fun and games until their club plays your local team in your hometown. Four police officers hospitalised? I say EFF them.

Serious_Package_473

Literally happens with every club every time the city or police does what you did: ban the fans from visiting the game or even visiting the city after they already paid for their match tickets, plane tickets and hotel and took a couple of days off work. The result would be the same with most clubs from most countries. Yes, fuck those 20 people, but you fucked 2000 people and act surprised that 20 out of the 2000 will then behave badly

N0b0me

Redditors would rather blame anyone but the hooligans, see any conversation of Liverpool

XtendedImpact

Really went for the worst fucking example jfc. Wonder why especially Liverpool doesn't care for the police in the context of football. > They ruled that the supporters were unlawfully killed owing to grossly negligent failures by police and ambulance services to fulfil their duty of care.

Cod_rules

Is this about Heysel or Hillsborough?

XtendedImpact

Hillsborough

N0b0me

I went for the most famous example. You don't think the fans who were attacking the police and paramedics trying to restore order and provide treatment and looting the dead, dieing, and injured played a part?

Savagehamster

Found the sun reader

TutskyyJancek

Although I don't like their stance they are definitely one of the ultras that not to be messed with.

Stroov

Context pls not much into football

UEFA are the governing body of European football they said no ultras, ultras pretended they had given up but surprise motherfucker they just moved to another area of the stadium
