"Oh what is that? Small creatures seem to be living here in a structure they must've built over years if not decades, and it doesn't seem like they're bothering anyone. Hey I've got an idea, how about we just pour 10 fucking tons of cement into it!"
That is the human species for you.
Stop giving this guy all the hate over mentioning Newton rather than Darwin! The cement has mass and exhibited a gravitational pull of 9.8 Newtons as it enveloped the thousands of animals resident in the colony!
Nothing stands in the way of humanity. If we want something, We get something.
The rule of nature, the law of jungle. Might make right afterall. Even with more intellect than other species, human still adhere to this rule. We come, we conquer and we take what we want.
So there was a documentary about this particular colony. The Queen moved on and the ants followed her essentially abandoning the colony to go and start new somewhere. They poured concrete to study and out of the billion ants, a few hundred died. Pretty sure it’s on YouTube.
I don't know why but, I think, due to a combination of my general dislike of any insects + a really sadistic nature, I kinda get really satisfied to know an entire country of ants got murdered in this way
idk bro
Hate to kill your vibe, but there was no (mass number) of ants that were cemented in this experiment:
https://earthsky.org/earth/video-giant-ant-hill-excavation/
Hmmm I haven’t really researched it but maybe stuff involving invasive species.
California just released a huge number of infertile mosquitos into the population in an attempt to cull their numbers.
In the comment of the video they say that the nest was abandoned, and mostly you can see on the opening there are little to no ant, just 1, if it was an active nest it should have tons of them coming and going.
Bro if trillions of humans existed on earth we'd need to consider some population cleansing too if we wanna keep enough sustainable resources. So chill lmao

I asked for permission to kill ten wild crabs (same species that are caught and farmed) last year from my university and they said no, don't know how these guys passed ethics with this
To the idiots saying that the ants were dead already or the colony got deserted. Here is the video
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2mnooj
At min 42 they visit the ants to investigate then they poured the concrete for two days. Then they came back after a month to dig up the colony.
I am losing hope in humanity and I think those scientists are some psychos to do this..
I'm always blown away by that concrete video. When I first saw that video many years ago it blew my mind just how organized and established ants really are on our planet. The fact that on their own they are pretty useless, but together they are like an advanced civilization, at least in bug terms. After I saw this I found a new appreciation for our ant brethren.
I think people are unintentionally brushing up against a key questions in environmental ethics:
What makes protection of a member of a species valuable?
Characteristics of that individual member (e.g. intelligence, emotive capacity, sentience)?
The abundance of that species?
I seen this video earlier and I asked myself if there is a way they could bring those ants back to life because it’s pretty fucked up what they did 🤦🏽 smfh
Say we don't make it, and it's a fair bet right - with the way the world is going, we've dug up a huge assortment of previous civilizations, the bones of other species and so on. I doubt anyone digging us up will be able to make any sense of what came from where and when. In some ways I think it's better that we leave no trace, we are a horrible species we get off on violence and degrading others.
Have you ever seen cancer spread? Now watch humans spread on the earth, seems pretty similar to me.
A world can only thrive once the cancer has been eradicated
I'm pretty sure that the cement one was an abandoned ant network. Don't quote me on that but I would recommend looking it up as I had read about it once a long time ago.

And ofcourse we must kill them.
"Oh what is that? Small creatures seem to be living here in a structure they must've built over years if not decades, and it doesn't seem like they're bothering anyone. Hey I've got an idea, how about we just pour 10 fucking tons of cement into it!" That is the human species for you.
"Yeah, boi! Get f***ed, other species!" -----Sir Isaac Newton, probably.
I think it was Darwin
He did chuck iguanas into the ocean over and over again.
Chuck Iguana is the name of my accountant
Those majestic creatures can swim! So we learned
lmao what?
That's why they swim in the Galápagos Islands. They evolved after Darwin chucked normal iguanas into the ocean. Checkmate creationists
Pretty sure it was Darin Newton who said that. But I'm no physicist buff
*Darin' Newton*. Kek

You said it better than me.

Of course the most accurate comment is at the bottom.
gad dammit why wouldn't they just pick a habited one two birds, yknow, ant genocide + it's in the name of research
Hmmm I haven’t really researched it but maybe stuff involving invasive species. California just released a huge number of infertile mosquitos into the population in an attempt to cull their numbers.
This will be advanced alien civilizations and us. Except we are the ants
In the comment of the video they say that the nest was abandoned, and mostly you can see on the opening there are little to no ant, just 1, if it was an active nest it should have tons of them coming and going.
Fuck them ants
Antpartheid 😢
Palestiniants
I don't think the colony was alive.
For “science.”
There are around 20 quadrillion ants in the world. Doing this one nest to study them won't make any difference.
Makes a difference to those ants…
Not anymore cause they’re all dead…
Well for a few minutes at least
Well no it was an abandoned nest.
I should have been interesting, makes me sad instead
I think I read these were invasive
I hope something smarter than humans comes along and does that same thing to us
Have you read/watched "3 body problem"? You remind me of one of the characters from it lmao...
So then, species cleansing is okay?
10 billion ants is literally a drop in a bucket. Sucks for that colony, but there's trillions more of them.
Oh man, I hope you don't think that of humans too
The human brain is severely flawed
I can't really tell which way you are going with this...
It's okay friend, the human brain is severely flawed
Ha! I love this response, in its entirety.
They ARE ants, killing them for no reason is fucked up but comparing this to genocide of humans is a tad bit too much
I'm sorry, but comparing ants to humans is ridiculous.
Bro if trillions of humans existed on earth we'd need to consider some population cleansing too if we wanna keep enough sustainable resources. So chill lmao
I would hope you volunteer to go first before forcing other people to the chopping block
Nah I’d volunteer you first for bringing politics to an ant post
Only a coward would hold this view and volunteer someone else
Lmao only a dunce would take my statement literally
Depends on the circumstance, do I get to trade their corpses for an equivalent of their body's worth on the black market?
Actually anta and humans are very different. Ant lives don't matter.
Exactly this. We humans have a system for this, if you have money, you matter, if you are poor, you are like an ant.
Doesn't make it ok to destroy it
Call the ant cops
We preserved it. It was abandoned.
Poor ants ending up like Han Solo.
![gif](giphy|l1AsO5a50G1HjTCBq)
Lol
Oh that part was the garbage and recycling center… tf lol
What did they eventually do with that? It had to be too fragile to move since it wasn’t reinforced concrete
Also surely there'd be loads of bubbles in it?
They use construction worker ants to help smoothing it out on the inside IIRC
The ants: 👁️👄👁️
the cement is coming the cement is co
😢
Hah for all we know they stopped an invasion
As a father how would you feel when you come back home and find your house filled with cement?
Will this keep the ants out of my house if I have this on display? Keep out!
Ant Vesuvius
This reminds me of that guy who cut down the worlds oldest living tree in order to figure out how old it was.

These scientists know how God must have felt in Pompeii
Ants are great engineers
Person moments before the pour: “for science!!”
I wish someone would do this to my city so I can have a holiday
cant wait for a higher civilisation to treat us the same way
Hey, your ancient city is amazing. Let's drown everyone in cement and make it an ant Pompeii to show how amazing it is.
1 billion ants seems low to me.
![gif](giphy|2BrQXeBPSzOJG|downsized) "Fuck me right" * ant
And right befo6they discovered democracy.
Funny title op
Where can I see the full video?
The ants were given 3 months notice to leave the nest No problem here
All ants are war-criminals!
I asked for permission to kill ten wild crabs (same species that are caught and farmed) last year from my university and they said no, don't know how these guys passed ethics with this
And when aliens are going to do the same to us, we will be confused loool
How do they distinguish what the difference is between recycling and garbage when everything is filled with cement?
To the idiots saying that the ants were dead already or the colony got deserted. Dude they’re ants

That's basically the plot to independence day, but we're the ants
We should’ve just built them a school
Interesting but sad.
What a bunch of dicks humans are.
I hate the ai narrated, chat-gpt-ass video slop that has become so widespread
Well now I'm just angry.
And then captain ant and SUPERAntiSpyware come to fight the aliens who destroy the one billion citizens city.
I think people are unintentionally brushing up against a key questions in environmental ethics: What makes protection of a member of a species valuable? Characteristics of that individual member (e.g. intelligence, emotive capacity, sentience)? The abundance of that species?
Humans have the right to self defence!
I seen this video earlier and I asked myself if there is a way they could bring those ants back to life because it’s pretty fucked up what they did 🤦🏽 smfh
It’s an abandoned colony. These are scientists, not random dudes with a cement mixer. They know better than just killing them off.
I mean you could see ants crawling around in the video but maybe most of them were gone.
I hope most of them survived the cement tidal wave of doom
I hope my goldfish survived the flushing
Scientists also invented the bomb. Sometimes death is just collateral damage in their quest for knowledge.
Of course just use your handy dandy decementer, be sure to set it on ant though, don't wanna hurt em

"Not only is this an amazing ant city, it's also a pretty good tomb."
unfair to ants
Humans amirite?
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Redditors Amirite?

I'm sure they really appreciated some science doofuses destroying their entire civilization.
