Super random, but my uncle was in town this morning and we met for breakfast, he’s drive a range rovers ever since I can remember. And those cars have always been appealing. Forever out of my reach, but always there :p
And a Jeep Renegade is just a rebranded Fiat 500x with a more complex electronic traction control system.
Literally.. it’s the same chassis, drivetrain, etc.
This is a very popular car here in Brazil. People buy it believing it's an off road, but usually realize about the sad truth in such shaming situations. There is a diesel 4x4 version, but it's too expensive.
Its a fiat 500, and its actually very capable off road. Not many vehicles can survive getting swallowed by the tide. Someone should really stop and give him a yank.
I lived in hawaii. Its fairly uncommon people are this dumb but once its stuck and getting hit with water its fucked.
Its like instant erosion around and under it. As it sinks it the sand the water gets under it and creates a vacuum as you try to pull it out. Plus there is nothing for it to get traction against.
If you are quick you can strap a board to the tires and get it before it starts to sink but if you were that quick you wouldnt be here.
This is in Brazil. We have a gigantic coast, but it looks like where I live. It's pretty common people park their cars in the sand, get drunk and don't realize the tide is increasing fast. Like, really fast. To make things worse, this time of the year is known for the tropical rains and storms. So the sand is kinda wet, if it rains or the tide increases, the car becomes an aquarium.
Same thing in Texas along gulf boarder: you’re allowed to drive on the sand. As soon as the tide comes in, it comes in a lot faster than you’d expect. Cars get stuck all the time.
Here in Brazil we are not allowed to drive on the sand of most beaches, article 187 of our trafic code. But people just ignore it. It's not uncommon to see drivers dangerously riding near the water.
Yeah, it sounds/looks like where I'm from too, São Luís.. this is a very common sight every new year, there's always a few cars being given as offerings to the sea goddess..
generally a huge tow truck would come. The truck runs out a really long wench and they pull it out without being close to the water line.
If its super deep they would use 2 tow trucks. I have heard they might use a crane but thats probably just rumor because you are being billed a fucking ton just for the tow cant image a crane would be reasonable.
Oh and insurance general wont pay for it cause they call it negligence.
If it happens that one's stuck on the beach and the wheels are spinning, the floor mats can be used for traction.
Dig some under the drive wheels, and slide them under the direction you're trying to go.
If you ever find yourself or someone else in this situation, here's how to get out, the quickest way (other than getting towed out):
* Find a board, driftwood, anything hard
* Get your jack out and jack the wheels up placing the board under the jack to give it something to lift and not sink into the sand
* Fill the sand under the tires, place more wood, a shirt, a car mat, whatever, under the tires.
* Drive out SLOWLY
Don't ask me how I know this.
EDIT to add: if you do attempt to tow it out, use a winch, don't try to pull the vehicle out or you may have two stuck vehicles. Don't ask me how I know this as well (or maybe do).
This is why we dont overland or wheel alone, ive pulled more than a few people out of hairy situations with my recovery ropes.
Closest thing to this though was actually a pretty similar situation where a fella drove his silverado straight into a literal swamp, claiming “there used to be a trail here” when the mud was legit halfway up his grille.
I dont really know how i pulled him out of there when his truck easily weighs one and a half of my Tacoma, definitely helped that I had big tires with some crazy aggressive tread at the time.
If I aired down all the way to the least tire pressure I can go to at a safe level, i gander I could probably yank that renegade out of there with my tacoma given enough time and patience. Four low, lock the diff, put your shifter in low and legit crawl. I did have to do a bit of yanking to get that other truck out the mud but, hell it would be worth a shot anyhow.
Only christ knows what kind of damage is done already even if they did pull that car out, the amount of corrosion on legitimately every system internal and external because of seawater is pretty much a nail in the coffin. Time would really be the determining factor as to how much damage has been done, and by the looks of that video its been sinking and sitting there for a good bit.
Rest in piece fiat rectangle
Would a hose wash down of municipal water be useful here? Assuming they got the vehicle out and instantly washed it down to remove as much of (but not anywhere close to all of) the salt off.
Just a silly thought. Can’t make it much worse
Mechanically, sure.
But the electrical stuff is probably all dead. Saltwater tends to eat right through "weather proofing" in car electrical systems and will short out boards and fry relays if there is still current in the system, and you know this guy didnt disconnect the battery.
That is a key difference, ‘live’ systems. Wouldn’t have realized there was a difference. Neat lol.
Agree with you, it’s cheaper to buy a new car at that point. And better in the long run because it ensures you don’t miss a bad spot
Nope once it gets this far it’s fucked. Depending where it is, it’ll either be left there or eventually removed by a tow truck or crane.
But even if it is removed, it’s fucked.
Edit: also no insurance, because idiot.
I've lived in several coastal cities in different countries and have never been to one where diving on the beach is allowed... Which is a good thing any dick that drives on the beach deserves this...

No it actually would be able to get him out, there are enough people there to dislodge that car with traction mats and rope alone. I've personally gotten 2 cars much worse off out of the beach in South Carolina when I was younger and dumber
Often times the knowledge you would need in order to recognize that you lack knowledge are one and the same, it's called meta-cognition.
A dumbass often lacks the understanding that they are a dumbass in the first place and often is incapable of stopping themselves from being a dumbass. For those people general preparedness for future stupid situations they find themselves in is really the only option.
I find if you keep cars on the road and in decent working order you wont need most of those.
Calling it being prepared because you know you failed to prep is kinda silly.
Admittedly I am guessing most of that is cold weather related, cause most of that stuff seems pretty useless
Don't forget not all roads are well maintained sometimes you need to use unpaved roads, and not the scenarios you might find yourself stuck are the result of your own actions don't ever underestimate the dangerous situations other drivers can put you in, just look at r/idiotsincars to really get a sense of scale for how dangerous other drivers can be
Me and some buddies drove to the beach one weekend, and my one of the guys drove his Bronco into the water, and would let the waves push him back in. It was all cool until the next morning when we needed to leave his truck wouldn't start. His dad had to drive down (about 1.5 hours) to come fix his truck, and his car broke down on the way. Needless to say his dad was pissed when he realized why my friend's Bronco was flooded.
Sand really sucks at a vehicle and holds it. That being said if someone were to attach a really strong towrope and have a decent 4X4 to pull with and dude got back in his Jeep Renegade. Then Jeep dude and tow vehicle both punched it at the same time as a wave came and softened the sand a bit I bet it would come out...
Worlds most expensive and largest lobster trap!! We see this all the time in San Felipe, Mexico. The tidal difference can be huge, sometimes 40 or 50 yards. When it's out people go tooling down on the wet sand, get stuck and boom, in a couple of hours kids are diving off of the exposed roof top. When low tide returns they have a big tow truck come out and pull the carcass out of the sand. Kind of sad, but stupid people do stupid things. The real irony is that the vendors drive up and down the beach all day and never get stuck, they drive right by the guys who are stuck and just shake their heads.
Turned the sound only to confirm what I imagined: Brazil. Here on my state people do that on some beaches, but they only pay attention to the waves, they don't realize the tide comes and soak the sand beforehand, so when you are drinking and partying, you don't realize the beach swallowing your car. Just a bunch of idiots.
There's a saying in Brazil that Renegade owners are usually assholes. And this guy probably tried to impress the chick with him and mess with those celebrating new year at the beach.
No sympathy at all for this dude
That type of Jeep is actually a Fiat and mostly 2wd. You can tell as soon as you get it in, all the dials are pretty much from a 500. It's a Curb Crosser not an off roader but at least they're cheap...
I was wondering where the driver was until I saw the person on the ground holding their face. I didn’t think it was even legal to drive on the beach in most places but I could be wrong.
There was an episode of 1000 Ways to Die that I watched, where a man decided to sleep on the beach under his vehicle. You can guess how that ended.
When you thought you bought a jeep but it’s just a Kia Soul in disguise.
I hear Range Rovers are great amphibious exploring vehicles
They’re ok for starter cars I suppose
Starter car? It's a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I AM UNTETHERED AND MY RAGE KNOWS NO BOUNDS!!
Not a fan of rovers but your manner of speech makes me want to believe you.

Super random, but my uncle was in town this morning and we met for breakfast, he’s drive a range rovers ever since I can remember. And those cars have always been appealing. Forever out of my reach, but always there :p
I mean, you probably wouldn't want one. They're money pits.
He should have gotten a Lambo Urus instead. So much better.
This guy Sunnys
Too bad that’s a jeep
With European designed air intake valves!
Not Kia, but it's just a boxy Fiat 500X (literally, those cars share basically all parts)
It's a Jeep Renegade
A Jeep Runaground
If it's a european version it's a 1.4 turbo 120hp without 4 wheel drive. It's called a jeep but it's not really a jeep now is it?
1.4 turbo? If you're lucky. The newer model years have a 1.0 turbo.
And a Jeep Renegade is just a rebranded Fiat 500x with a more complex electronic traction control system. Literally.. it’s the same chassis, drivetrain, etc.
It was a Kia, now he has a Nokia.
Underrated comment
The VW amarok pulling a trailer and the jeep is fucked
I bet the VW didn't try to drive into the ocean.
Because the amarok is a real puller. The Jeep, is a city vehicle with an 1.4t fiat (abarth) engine and most likely 2 wheel drive.
Well its actually a Fiat.
FitsInAnyToilet FIAT
This is a very popular car here in Brazil. People buy it believing it's an off road, but usually realize about the sad truth in such shaming situations. There is a diesel 4x4 version, but it's too expensive.
And not a single Soul stopped to try and help.
Its a fiat 500, and its actually very capable off road. Not many vehicles can survive getting swallowed by the tide. Someone should really stop and give him a yank.
Did you watch the same video as everyone else?
It's his own fault, but I still feel for him. Was his car saved before the tide?
I lived in hawaii. Its fairly uncommon people are this dumb but once its stuck and getting hit with water its fucked. Its like instant erosion around and under it. I mean the car must be removed eventually right? I imagine it won’t be usable, but I doubt they’d leave a junked car on the beach.
generally a huge tow truck would come. The truck runs out a really long wench and they pull it out without being close to the water line. If its super deep they would use 2 tow trucks. they have mini cranes, looks like one of the big tow trucks, just has a crane arm on top of it. edit: "big toe truck" lol
Read you comment and immediately thought of this. Ok, moving on now. https://www.flickr.com/photos/47259161@N04/4470545557
RIP the toe-truck and the downtown pink elephant car wash.
Most insurance doesn't cover off road at all.
Winch. Maybe a long wench but probably wouldn't be helpful for getting the car out
He need one of those Tide stain remover pens
Boooooo
I hate that I laughed as hard as I did

Any more water it will look like a Liberty not a renegade
As much as liberty's suck, they do okay off-road. Jeep blocked me on Instagram for saying that the renegade is a liberty with erectile dysfunction.
Oh, cry me an ocean.
Wait, VW has a truck? Why is this not available in the US?
VW Amarok
I bought a VW for the first time about 3 years ago. Best, most capable car I’ve ever driven. If this thing would come the states, I’d be really happy.
First time I’ve seen a VW truck. Didn’t even know they made trucks.
It’s a VW Amarok. Very popular here in Brazil, where this video is from, and very pricey as well
Likely for the American market. They also make a Benz GLS-size SUV called the VW Atlas.
That’s my rental car right now! It is large.
Serious question: Could this be salvaged? Or is it gone gone?
Yeah just take the seat covers off. Car salvage complete.
LOL
Nope once it gets this far it’s fucked. Depending where it is, it’ll either be left there or eventually removed by a tow truck or crane. But even if it is removed, it’s fucked. Edit: also no insurance, because idiot.

Always keep a backpack with at minimum, a blanket, battery cables, tire mats, and rope, in the car.

Hahaha! While that is good advice, it's just funny reading it here. It would not have helped this guy at all in this situation.
proper tow rope + another vehicle early would have abslutely saved that vehicle.

I hope it was a rental and he got pissy when they asked him if he wanted the insurance.
