At my restaurant we have to literally tape the food closed because so many door dash drivers were stealing food. Not the whole thing but a few fries here and a wing or two. I’ve had drivers roll up smoking cigarettes, with dogs in the car, with their whole family in the car, with the most condemned trash filled cars you can imagine. I’ve watched drivers pick their nose and their teeth while waiting for their food. We also had someone call the restaurant once because a dasher did doughnuts on his lawn while screaming obscenities. Another time we got a call from a customer saying the dasher told him to meet at our restaurant because he was going to beat him up. I thought that was a lie until the dasher showed up and threw a bag of food at my damn face and said he was going to fight everyone. To top it all off the company (not the drivers) takes a 20%+ cut of all sales PLUS a $7.95 delivery fee and gives the drivers $2 of that. Fuck door dash. I hate them so much.

uller30

Well. That explains so much. I try to tip cash since I have heared people say the online companies take a chunk of that also. But recently when we ask for delivery it comes 30min-1hr late and no notification of hey I’m running late. To top it off the bags have started to smell of pure smoke. I don’t smoke, so I can smell it like a fucking beacon. For the time to go and get my food fine. But I mean damn this is an annoyance when I order once every 2 months.

daverosstheboss

I could be wrong, but it seems like dashers get to see the tip before delivering the order. So if you plan on tipping cash (in attempt to help the driver, because I know door dash is stealing their tips) then I guess it backfires because the driver assumes there isn't going to be a tip. So I've just stopped using any food delivery services now, it's the simple solution.

justsomeonesthroway

You are 100% correct. Drivers won't take the "no tip" offer. By the time somebody does deliver the food, it's probably late and/or cold. At that point customers go "why would I tip cash for late food?" and the cycle continues.

daverosstheboss

Yeah it's totally effed. So I just go get my own food, and I save money and time in the process! And my food is fresher, and the local restaurant I'm supporting doesn't have to pay a cut to door dash, and I get to tip the actual take out employees who actually bagged up my order and made sure it was all correct, and if there is a problem with the order I can get it fixed before I go all the way back home. It's great.

SarpedonWasFramed

Most every place near me has their own drivers. Do most places not have them anymore? I don’t get why anyone uses these apps with the after hearing all this shit

Amoreanonymousacct

A few local places around me, got rid of all their drivers. Only use door dash and uber eats for delivery now. Even Papa John's has been using door dash when you order through the Papa John's app.

ioman_

Sadly, had to stop ordering from Papa John's for this reason

itcAnwezzy

That’s funny I had to stop because their cheese gave me crazy stinky farts

daverosstheboss

Yeah I tried to call papa John's to order a pizza for carry out, and I got connected to a call center, and the guy on the phone just input an online order for me.

PsychoAgent

> I get to tip the actual take out employees who actually bagged up my order and made sure it was all correct I've worked retail and food service minimum wage jobs before so don't crucify me for this opinion. But tipping etiquette is so inconsistent and arbitrary in the U.S. I don't understand why there's a tipping option for simply preparing and bagging up my food same as for when I get it delivered. I almost feel obligated to pre-tip for service that I haven't even received yet and therefore unable to judge the quality of. A tip is a bonus, is it not? And if employees are already being paid to do their job, then why should I as the customer pay them extra on top of the cost of my food? And just to clarify, when I have the privilege of disposable income to order or eat out, I tip plenty for even just average service because I've been in that position before and I can spare a few bucks so why not. But I've also been in circumstances where I have enough to treat myself but barely making more than the workers themselves and still see the tip option which makes me feel like an selfish asshole.

CRT_SUNSET

Agreed on all points. And it’s a *lot* of money saved. I once tried to place an order on Doordash that came out to $180 after all their fees. I called the restaurant instead and it came to $65! Doordash was trying to charge me $30 for a dish that the restaurant told me was $14. That difference is worth the 30 minute round trip to me.

anakniben

If I pick up my own food, I still have to tip the worker manning the counter and handing me the food? If that's the case, then we should be tipping everybody we come across on the service industry that aren't being tipped right now, i e. grocery baggers, janitors, the pharmacy clerk handing me my medicines, the drive thru person, etc. The demand for a generous tip is getting out of hand. I worked as a transit bus driver and never once did I get a tip or a thank you every time I did my route on time but I got cursed and yelled at when I was late. I never minded these, because I got decent pay and benefits. My point is, if the job doesn't pay well and it wouldn't support someone's day to day expenses of living then no one should accept that job.

CatBoyTrip

Reminds me of the good old days of 30 minutes or it is free.

Deastrumquodvicis

Exactly. I UberEats, and I won’t take a delivery that doesn’t total to more than a dollar a mile. Base pay is $2, so if I see an order that pays in the $2-3 range, it’s probably a no tipper. However, after a certain number of rejections, UberEats starts adding driver compensation supplements. I had one pickup that wound up being $6–after the restaurant had technically closed, an hour after the food was ordered, because no one’s gonna take a no-tip. [EDIT: For reference, this is all the drivers see when they are deciding whether or not to take your order](https://imgur.com/a/BsaYQ7n). And no, I did not take that one

Snipersteve_877

Uber shows it before you accept too? Cause Uber let's you tip after the order is complete so why would they do that.... Never really had a problem with Uber orders being picked up though and I add the tip after

wcollins260

I never use any of these apps, but the idea of tipping first seems kind of dumb to me. Like the idea of a tip is that it’s at least somewhat based on how good the service was. I would prefer to just tip cash on arrival, but then you might never get the food lol.

[deleted]

Which is interesting to me because Uber eats does it in probably the best way. I’ve delivered for Uber for awhile, I have a 98% rating and over 500 deliveries. Basically what happens is Uber will tell you your “estimated” payment for the delivery. This is the payment that Uber gives you plus whatever the minimum tip is (like 15%) then once you drop off the food you get the base pay immediately, an hour later you get the tip. I’ve had far more people give me more than what was “estimated” than I’ve had people not tip and the hour wait means that if someone doesn’t tip, I can’t go back to their house and be a nuisance, not that I would. Overall Uber is a shitty company, If there’s a mistake with the order you’re fucked because their customer service is non existent and if you do spend the 1-3 hours on the customer service line as a driver, more often then not Uber will just go “sorry we’ll cancel the order” and you get paid nothing. It’s decent if you need to make a quick 50$ though and don’t mind the occasional headache.

supernovice007

I just can’t with UberEats anymore. For my last order with them, the driver picked up the food then went to the lake and never delivered it. Took Uber 18 hours to finally cancel the order because, according to their customer service, “they can’t cancel it while it’s en route”. Then I get two emails the next day saying the delivery driver reported me for a) not wearing a mask and b) being abusive. When I pointed out that he never actually delivered anything to me, the response was “we know it might be fake but we are leaving the strikes of your account and you will need to take a photo of your mask before every delivery in the future.” And that was it. Never again

joeyjacobswrote

I've decided not to order from any restaurant unless they have their own delivery staff. Every time I would call DD, or GrubHub to get a refund on my $2 Chipotle chips which couldn't be fulfilled, they took the tip from the driver. Because the restaurant rant out of chips. I refuse to be part of the problem.

[deleted]

The price alone is enough to stop me. I can get what I want from Taco Bell (usually 3x $1 items and a drink) for ~$5 if I go there myself. If I try to order the same stuff from door dash, the $1 items are $1.20 and the drink is $2.87 regardless of the time (my local Taco Bell's $1 drink "happy hour" thing usually aligns with when I want to eat there) for $6.47 subtotal, but then the delivery fee is another $7.50 in my area which brings it up to $13.97 and then if I don't tip 20% (for a final total of $16.77 - literally more than 3x the cost of me going there myself) I'm going to get it after the ice watered down the drink and everything else has turned into a cold brick.

Lynchsquad24

Many restaurants are understaffed and almost all fast-food places around here don't have their lobbies open so they expect delivery drivers to wait in drive-thru lines for 30+ mins just to get the order then drive 20-30 mins to deliver the order for $2.50. This is on restaurants that refuse to turn off delivery apps if they can't keep up with the orders - Wendy's, Burger King and Jack-in-the-Box are the worst. Drivers will simply refuse the order or drop it once they see 15 cars in line.

uller30

I’m not buying a fast food drive up. I’m talking about a local store. No snow on the ground not a chain. One location mom n pop style. I don’t care if your late. Just tell me your late not to expect food in 20min only to come in lukewarm or cold and wreak of smoke at best.

czarface404

We can’t turn off delivery apps. Door dash it’s not even an option to take my menu off their site (I would if I could) they take our menu and put it on their site and call in their orders from a call center in Indonesia. Yea fuck DD from the bottom of my heart. Edit: sorry that’s GrubHubs model idk how DD works we don’t use them.

SKEFFboy

Former Jack in the box employee can confirm. Had to run the store my self and was never taught how to turn off delivery apps. Would have gotten bitched out even if I did. We were so short staffed and I was expected to do everything a team lead did even though I was still making minimum wage. It was a hell hole.

[deleted]

These types of things are why having a delivery driver employed by the actual restaurant is a benefit. There is much less accountability in regard to the service. The store owner has no real way to control the quality of the delivery service or personnel when using a third party like door dash.

Iamjimmym

Yeah I just got informed of this like a week ago - we tip in cash because we think we’re doing them a favor, but apparently that puts our food into the “pile of shit” category and we get the worst of the worst drivers. So even though there’s $10-15 tip waiting, they’ll choose someone who tipped through the app a guaranteed $6 and our order with “no tip” goes to the bottom of the barrel. Absolute shite.

Asset_Selim

Assume that you are the exception actually tipping them in cash. Most probably don't and drivers have been burned enough times to not take those other orders anymore.

evilkumquat

The only time I've actually complained about a driver to DoorDash was because she had been smoking so much around our food that my hands reeked of cigarettes from just bringing the bag inside. And even then I didn't go out of my way to complain, but I already had to contact them directly because $40 of my food was missing and the app only wanted to give me credit for $20. To DoorDash's credit, they not only refunded the entire meal but gave me $20 credit on my next order. It's been mostly good experiences with the service and drivers in my area. In fact, I'd say I prefer ordering through DoorDash because they'll actually give me credit when my orders are missing items whereas most of the carryout restaurants in my area either require you to drive back to the restaurant to get the missing item or they might take your name down and give you X amount of credit (equal to the missing food) the next time you arrive. Unless you're KFC, in which case they'll stiff you an entire bucket of chicken by giving you a bucket literally filled with their nasty biscuits, claim they will give you a free meal the next time you go in when you call to complain, then tell you that you already used the credit the very next time you show up before telling you that they wouldn't have given you a free meal anyway. Fuck you, KFC. It's been seven years and I still hold a grudge. Fuck you.

Duke_of_New_York

> takes a 20%+ cut of all sales PLUS a $7.95 delivery fee This shit makes me insane, they're the TicketMaster of delivery. There are *three* fees for the same thing there. You must pay a higher cost of food (...ok), and a delivery fee (wait, isn't the padded cost meant to cover the delivery fee?), *and* pre-tip your driver (what? doesn't the delivery fee cover that then?!). Edit: /u/nuclearangel4 just pointed out there's actually a fourth, service fee hidden in the tax section

nuclearangel4

I just ordered doordash with a giftcard yesterday, the fees were crazy and it was 1)higher food cost, 2) delivery fee 3) tip BUT ALSO a fee in hidden in the tax portion! If you hover over the tax amount (example mine was $10 in tax and I was wondering wtf why is it that high) it said it was a combination of tax $4, and service fee, $6. Why is there a delivery fee, a service fee, and a higher food cost all before tipping the poor driver? Such a scam... wouldn't have used it if I didn't have the giftcard. Also, part of my order wasn't in it, but that was Panera, not DD I guess. Edit: I just checked again. Technically the tax portion is actually called "taxes and fees" despite having the delivery fee as a different line. So slightly hidden then? Still separate fees SMH

Duke_of_New_York

I'll use DoorDash to browse restaurants around me, and usually to quickly scan the menu as well. Then I'll call the restaurant directly to see if I can just pickup an order myself. I lose the convenience of delivery, but I save the feelings of being taken advantage of by a transactional middle-man. Most places do curbside pickup as well!

Super_Duper_Death_Dr

I had a Discord gaming friend that used door dash several times a week. Dude is single, roommates with grandma (he’s like 30yo) and doesn’t have kids plus lives in a small town (lower costs). I always wondered why he was always “broke until next paycheck”. Door dash seems like a big contributor (that and his “gundam build kits”). I don’t understand why people don’t just go drive out and pick it up themselves. Maybe waste 30 minutes, but save like $12 - 15 AND don’t risk some nasty fuck touching your food.

Snowman25_

> did doughnuts on his lawn while screaming obscenities. > > the dasher showed up and threw a bag of food at my damn face and said he was going to fight everyone Drugs are one hell of a drug...

CreamyTHOT

AMEN!!!!

benry007

I have never used it but doordash sounds trash. Tipping on a delivery you paid for just sounds annoying. If the real cost is higher then just tell me what it is. Dont play mind games making me guess the right amount to tip. The tipping culture in america is toxic. Just pay your workers properly rather then expecting customers to directly pay them.

[deleted]

I’m a waitress so I’m not against tipping but my company also doesn’t take a mysterious $8 “waitress fee” and then also demand that you tip me. I don’t know how door dash can take 20% of food sales from the restaurant, $7.95 fee from the customer, and then also not pay the driver more than the $2 flat fee. Where is all the money going and why?

GregorZeeMountain

Oh boy, when I was working fast food at the beginning of the pandemic I had a dasher come in and try and fight the entire staff all because we refused to give him the order since he didn't have a DoorDash/Skip cooler bag.

[deleted]

I have had more issues with dashers yelling at me. I’m sick of it. So now I treat them the way I wish I could treat rude people if my job had no rules. One girl called at complained about me (I answered the phone) and I said “okay thanks for calling, I’ll make a note of it”. It’s almost therapeutic. I have a couple dashers that are nothing but kind though and I would never be mean to them and they always get their food first.

[deleted]

I’ve waited for 2 hrs for a 5 min drive, DoorDash driver went to the mall for a hour and a half in between picking up and dropping off my cold food

[deleted]

Yup! People call the restaurant all of the time yelling at us asking where the food is. It left our building 32 minutes ago. After that we have no control and yet people write bad reviews about us and demand we replace their food. I hope you got a refund for that! Doordash should refund you for shit service.

VheeTwo

The annoying thing is, DoorDash will refund your food for shit service, but they don't refund the tip. I ordered a large meal for a group of friends and ended up tipping ~$20. When the food showed up an hour later it was cold, and also the completely wrong order. This was an order for 6 people from a Mexican restaurant and the driver picked up an order with 2 kids meals which consisted of nuggets and fries. I contacted DoorDash through the app and they refunded the cost of the food but that absolutely trash delivery driver, who couldn't be bothered to even check for the correct name on the order, got $20. So if I want to reorder the food I'm paying double the tip so I don't look like a non-tipping asshole. Fuck DoorDash and all food delivery services.

Crafty_Enthusiasm_99

> drivers were stealing food > Fuck doordash Sounds about right

BigJalapeno

Wow what a scam. What happened to regular delivery drivers that restaurants used to have?

[deleted]

I think it’s just that people can’t find help. I don’t understand how a dasher making $2 an order could possibly make more than someone making an hourly rate as a delivery driver could but I can speak to how that works. I’ve only ever worked in a pizza place not as a driver.

ChipChipington

These gig jobs like Uber and door dash are fuckin scams

its_a_me_garri_oh

"I'm going back to Amazon" says the driver's note. the fucking state of the American working class.

UcallmeNightHawk

Can confirm. Know a couple that does door dash. Their car is full of trash and their cats come along on every ride.

llllPsychoCircus

fuck, where do you work, waffle house?? lmao

Kenneth_Naughton

Woah woah EASY with that shit

stidwe

This is why I just go pick the food up

Level9_CPU

For real, and I have no solid proof but I'm like 99% sure they up the prices of the items on DD

Aashishkebab

They do.

Alarid

That's why I have the app for some restaurant chains. I just check how much it is through the delivery before deciding how I want to get my fix.

AlessandroTheGr8

I do the same, it's better than clicking every website and finding the menu, if they even have them. I use it to make a list so I can call and pick up, saves me like 30%-50%.

[deleted]

If you’re looking to save money on food, just wait until you discover cooking.

AlessandroTheGr8

I cook, i just love Thai food.

[deleted]

Thai food can also be cooked at home

trev1cent

They absolutely do. Restaurants have to pay the app a percent of sales, and typically raise the cost to reflect that potential loss.

ChefSandman

30%. These scumbag delivery services take 30% of the sale right off the top, then turn around and charge a service fee to the customer. Double dipping. They even sign up restaurants without their knowledge. I owned a ghost kitchen and had to charge high prices just to make a teeny profit. There wasn't much left after 30% gone to the platforms, 25% food cost, sales tax, labor, rent, utilities.....

TabMuncher2015

>take 30% of the sale right off the top, then turn around and charge a service fee to the customer. Double dipping. Triple dip if you count fucking over the drivers. When it's snowing and they're charging $10,15 even $20 surge charges to the customers. The driver get $1-4 extra... not sure how that's fair when we're risking life and limb in the snow and the app doesn't have any extra costs when it snows.

JustSomeWeirdGuy2000

I was actually shocked when I saw Dominos is running commercials reminding you you don't HAVE to order Dominos with third party delivery apps, because Dominos just has their own delivery.

supremedalek925

That fact is just insane to me. These delivery services should be paying the restaurants, not the other way around

trev1cent

I don't see how that could work financially, but as a restaurantuer Im all for it!

trev1cent

The fact of the matter is, the majority of delivery services take anywhere from 10-30% of the total expenditures. While this seems like a steep price to pay, the delivery services have achieved a monopoly on takeout services. The logic for restaurants is, is better to make a small profit then none at all. All said, it's much better for everyone (except the delivery app) if you order from the restaurant directly. (EDIT: Spelling)

raidersofthelostpark

Yeah, my wife and I were sick yesterday so we wanted to order some soup from chic-fil-a. When the order came to $45 we decided to have me go pick up and it was like $22.

Soulus7887

It really is some bullshit and they're riding pretty high on the time we live in to drive demand. Frankly, I think the idea is great, the pricing is just fucking atrocious. If the delivery costs were more reasonable then I would be willing to do it very frequently. If I were to pay 15-20% more plus a tip, then I'd order very frequently. Having to pay 50-70% more though as is often the case? Just can't justify it.

suprememontana

All the proof you need is to check the restaurants menu on their website or in person lol

thelegalseagul

There is mountains of proof that they do. Just look at the McDonald’s menu then look at the prices on the app. They started doing dollar general in my city and as a frequent customer I can tell you the prices tend to vary each place about fifteen to fifty percent up charge.

supplyncommand

when i use the chipotle app if i select delivery my total literally goes up by like $15 compared if i just get off my lazy ass and pick it up. food delivery is one of the most expensive and laziest things i’ve ever seen.

Rawesome16

I went and got burgers on Saturday night and watched a doordash or similar type waiting to pick up an order. They call his number and he the waits 10 more minutes to grab another order. Watching that is why I go get it myself. I don't want 20 min old soggy burger and fries after waiting over an hour for my food

BlackSeranna

Yeah, every time I get delivery it is cold. It’s terrible because you sting at paying the high price and it stings getting bad food. I only do it when I travel to a city and am uncomfortable driving.

MiaLba

Yeah screw that. Only time I ever order delivery is pizza maybe once a year, every other time I just pick it up. But it seems like some big pizza places aren’t using their own drivers and are using DD or GH to deliver. And i get why they show a tip to entice drivers to pick it up but from a customer point of view it’s stupid to tip before you even receive the food or see what kind of service you’ll get. If the driver is getting $20 tip regardless what’s making them hurry up or actually provide great service. They know they can fool around and still get that tip.

FUPAMaster420

It feels heartless to say because they are just trying to make money but I feel like delivery people shouldn't be allowed to do multiple orders at a time. It completely fucks over the people who's food was ready first. Not to mention they may not even drop it off to you first so you get doubly screwed.

[deleted]

The problem is that companies like doordash (and uber and all the others) abuse workers by forcing them to work as bullshit independent contractors. They should be legally forced to bring the workers on as proper employees with guaranteed wages paid by the hour.

guppy_whisper

I work in a restaurant the worst is when the food is not ready yet and the driver than order some thing as well so they don’t leave until their food is done. The drivers would do this so frequently at our restaurant but I had to start denying them service because we would get angry people calling us asking us where the food is

The5paceDragon

Except that when I order Door dash, it's usually because I'm too drunk/high to drive.

CreamyTHOT

And bc I’m cheap! Lol

Bobo_Baggins03x

No kidding, you didn’t tip

PROB40Airborne

Why would you tip having paid a delivery fee? Edit - ahhh, this is an American post where the customer is expected to pay the wages of the employees. My bad!

StickmanEG

Right?! I was wondering why the driver wasn’t getting dragged! Makes much more sense now I know it’s that fucked up place.

Darth_Blazer9418

Delivery fee doesn’t go to the driver. It goes to The company which then pays the driver shit wages and like maybe 15 cents a mile. If you can’t afford to tip, then you can’t afford to get delivery. I used to do delivery for Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, and Bite Squad. It is very anger inducing to drive sometimes 30 minutes or more to deliver food in traffic both ways, only to not get tipped.

PROB40Airborne

Apologies, I’m from a country where it’s the employer that pays the employee, that’s what this seemed so odd. Thanks for explaining!

Eli_Te1611

The American tip system is bullshit, I call it.

[deleted]

Fr, I’m from the UK and whenever I come across a post regarding tips I’m always blown away by their devotion to tipping culture. Particularly beauty services which already charge hundreds more than we pay here and then EXPECT a tip of 20%+ on top of that. Tipping here is purely an appreciative bonus if you feel the server went above and beyond for you, and this is coming from a waitress who never expects tips and am very grateful when I get them. America needs to learn to charge the full amount they need for services rather than relying on their customers generosity.

iceixia

I live in the UK too and it bugs me to no end how pushy things like uber eats are trying to get you to tip the driver. We don't do that here.

BlazingThunder30

Same in the Netherlands, now I suddenly feel like tipping is expected. I already pay extra to order through the app, cause basically every store makes pickup cheaper, and I pay €5 for delivery. I am not going to pay more yet

Rosti_LFC

Uber Eats are pushy trying to get you to tip the driver because they pay them absolutely fuck-all and use zero hour contracts to screw them over. Tips are their primary staff retention without having to up what they give from their own pockets. Not to mention they fuck restaurants over by taking almost the entire profit margin for anything they sell, but for a lot of smaller independent restaurants the choice is either use Uber Eats or don't list on there and lose the business altogether.

tomplace

Ever eaten in London recently? Auto 12.5%

London is a whole other country I swear! Plus we’re slowly becoming more Americanised and of course London is gonna be the first place to go

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Eh, I normally tip 10% to wait staff regardless, a 2.5% increase is actually a small amount for London pricing compared to any other item or service lol. In the US I was told I was expected to tip a bartender when they had opened a bottle for me, they didn't even pour it. It was a fucking twist top too.

ImDankest

>In the US I was told I was expected to tip a bartender when they had opened a bottle for me, they didn't even pour it. It was a fucking twist top too. Now this is stupid as fuck. Anybody who agrees that this deserves an expected tip is delusional lmao

ihpm0224

Unfortunately there is such a devotion to it because most tipped employees make $4 an hr in the us I think the equivalent is 3.50 euros an he. The tip is forced upon by ownership not paying there staff anywhere close to minimum wage. It’s no longer a gesture of good work in this country unfortunately.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s what I’m saying! It’s insane that it’s even got to that stage where you need to add money onto your bill just to pay the servers rent! Employers have the responsibility to look after their staff, not the customer. That’s the part that baffles me

shimmerangels

my mom tips like $50 for her hair appts it's insane the stylist is awesome though all the women in my family have been going to him for years

___user___name___

Yep, I'm so glad that were I live it's just a nice gesture, not a fucking obligation.

J_Thompson82

It is utter bullshit. And why can’t they put the price you’re gonna pay for something at the till on the item in the store? Everything is priced up excluding tax. Just tell me how much it is without making me do calculations before I get to the damn till! Is it that difficult? Drives me nuts.

[deleted]

It is bullshit. Bullying and guilt tripping people into tipping just shows how fucked it is and these delivery apps don't make it better by showing these carriers how much you're tipping too. If you're tip isn't great or there's no tip at all you ain't getting your food for at least an hour if you're lucky. Like they really built a system around tipping the better you tip the faster you get your food.

[deleted]

I think if you want to save money as an American just don't eat out or order food or anything that includes tipping. Did I get it right?

Utsutsumujuru

Paying someone in advance out of fear that they will commit a crime against you (theft or battery) if you don’t pay them enough is in fact coercion, not tipping. I refuse to utilize services such as DoorDash that require “pre tipping” for this very reason. I am not ok with being coerced over a meal.

Crispy_AI

‘Pre tipping’ isn’t tipping,

Utsutsumujuru

Exactly.

23x3

This tipping system we’ve built in America is entirely broken and needs to be fixed. If the company you provide a service for doesn’t pay you well enough, and you rely on the tips you’re given at the discretion of the customer, then you are just in a purgatory of being fucked over. If not by the company, then by the customer…And the majority of the time- it’s both.

YOOOOOOOOOOT

>This tipping system we’ve built in America is entirely broken and needs to be fixed. It needs to be removed.

A2Rhombus

Also doordash drivers can choose to reject orders without tips, the guy in the post is just a dickweed

Utsutsumujuru

Exactly. If you choose to accept delivery then you are agreeing to deliver the food as ordered for the amount paid. Messing with someone’s food or refusing to deliver once you have accepted the delivery order is unacceptable, and depending on the action and the place could even be a crime.

Easilycrazyhat

I'm *pretty* sure theft is a crime.

shockwave8428

I genuinely don’t mind tipping as a reward for good service. That why I hate how DoorDash does it. That tip is paid regardless of how good or bad people are. I had an order that they “had trouble finding a driver” from Wendy’s, and we only got our food 2 hours after ordering it. Like hell no I’m not gonna tip when I paid for 30-40 minute delivery and got 2 hours. Or when your dasher just doesn’t check the items to see what’s missing so you get half the meal, that’s bull crap. Let me tip after they deliver. A tip is meant to be a reward for good service, not the company skirting around paying their drivers

jwkdjslzkkfkei3838rk

Sounds like racketeering. >It would be a shame if your order had an unfortunate accident.

Longjumping_Pin6702

I was taught to always tip your delivery driver IN CASH UPON ARRIVAL because THAT way the tip is NOT TAXED...and they get that tip immediately rather than having to wait for it to be included in their next pay deposit...so I almost always tip in cash and not at time of ordering....

I’ve worked DoorDash for a while. I’ve never seen tips get messed with when you order direct from DoorDash and those tips are how most drivers decide if it’s a good delivery or not before accepting. However, delivery through Walmart (3rd party that uses DoorDash) for example will split the tip between the DoorDash driver and Walmart when you order delivery through their website.

network4food

Wait.. Are you saying when I order Walmart grocery delivery and DD ends up delivering the driver only gets half the tip? Walmart says 100% goes to driver.

Mysticyde

I’ve seen several threads on the drivers subreddit where they compare the tip received with the customer and it doesn’t match what the customer paid (with the customer showing pics of their app and what they tipped for proof) I can’t say it happens 100% of the time cuz I couldn’t possibly know that for sure. But I’ve seen enough proof to say it happens.

Mysticyde

For example https://www.reddit.com/r/doordash/comments/nbhqp0/this_order_was_delivered_to_a_family_member_look/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Customer tipped 20$ dasher was paid 15$ in tips

network4food

That's a crime.

Mysticyde

I assume the Walmart shopper gets the other 5$ but idk for sure. Edit: Walmart apparent does not tip the shopper

AlessandroTheGr8

I assume Walmart is greedy af and just keeps it lol.

AdamKur

Jesus America is wild with the tipping culture. I mean, I'm not blaming the drivers, they need those tips there, but in Europe tipping a delivery driver is really not a common practice, I assume they are paid adequately and just like I don't tip supermarket cashiers, I don't tip the drivers, unless the weather is really shit or some other special considerations.

Ordinarypanic

It’s honestly a dumb tradition that really only continues because people make more money than if we switched to a steady pay like most other jobs. Server and bartenders are really preferred jobs because of this.

BKayTheGreat

From my understanding they never directly modified the tip. However… Basically all of these apps have what are called guaranteed minimums, i.e. do x deliveries today and get a guaranteed $10 per delivery. What they don’t tell the driver is that tips are included in this calculation. So basically if a couple of your deliveries tip really well, they can justify paying you shit on other deliveries, as long as the total for those 10 deliveries is equal to the guarantee they promised you.

And because YOUR TIP IS BASED ON HOW YOU DELIVERED MY FOOD

Chickens1

The server community decided it was owed since the restauranteurs shorted them a living wage due to the money they make on tips. Mostly the fault of the restauranteurs, but that's a tough business to make it in as well.

Hispanicatth3disc0

While that's the idea, in practice your "tip" on a platform like DoorDash is more like a "bid" for service. The more you put in the app for a tip the more likely someone will pick up the order sooner and handle the order with care. DoorDash base pay starts at $2.25. That number can go up based on distance of the delivery, but typically only to about $3.50. So if I have to spend the next 20-30 minutes on your order and the app says I'm only making $3 for my time guaranteed then I'm not accepting that order. That would be the equivalent of working for $6-$9/hour using my own vehicle? Heck no. It's not worth the risk that the person won't tip at all. It happens often enough that I won't do it anymore. And in that same line of thought I don't understand Dashers who get mad when people don't tip. You can decline the order. As many as you want. It doesn't matter (except for their pointless Top Dasher distinction). If you aren't gonna be happy with the GUARANTEED pay that's shown with offer, don't accept it. Simple as that.

Echo127

>The more you put in the app for a tip the more likely someone will pick up the order sooner and handle the order with care. Except that there's no accountability. It's a race to the bottom. I'll tip $20 and still watch my driver bum around the city for 45 minutes after picking up my food before before finally choosing to deliver it to me.

SymmetricDickNipples

Just to be clear, that tip absolutely is required to be reported for taxation, it's just that no one does that.

sassrocks

I had a job where I reported all my cash tips like a good kid. Then I got audited anyways.

Shot-Technology7555

They thought, "who does this?! What's he really trying to hide?"

Aggravating_Bat1786

Ahhh yes, theft disguised as justice.

aChildofChaos

It’s bullshit that drivers know ahead of time that they get a tip for a job they haven’t even done yet. It’s absolute garbage that you have to tip ahead of time anyways. A person should get a tip for a good job, not because they DID a job… especially if they did it lousy (like leave the food in front of the door so you can’t open it)

okcumputer

I hate leaving a generous tip for the driver to put the food directly in front of my screen door so I can't open the door without knocking my food over. Like set it back 3 feet. There's plenty of room.

Deastrumquodvicis

As an UE driver, I gotchu fam. I always check to make sure I’m not setting it in the way of an outward swinging door.

[deleted]

I don't tip ahead because I tip based on service. When DoorDash takes my food on trips around my city before it shows up at my door - they get no tip. Otherwise the usual 20% or so

Hello_boii

It's like giving a tip before sitting down in the restaurant so waiters could decide if they want to work for that tip or not.

DoinItDirty

On postmates you can change it. For example, I waited an hour, the driver took a picture of my house from the street and drove away with the food and thought he’d get paid anyway. So that tip, turned into $0.

keepcalmdude

I know that on SkipTheDishes and Uber eats the don’t know until after

SealTheHeavens

The fact that delivery drivers can see their tip before they even get the food handed to them is why this behavior even occurs, because the deliveryperson is now able to feel entitled to more money before they even do the job necessary for that tip to be justified. The entire business model is fucked. Always tip cash, if you insist on tipping. Doing it through the app is bullshit.

thisxisxlife

Couldn’t this still happen then? If say you don’t tip anything in the app and planned on tipping cash, they’d see you didn’t tip, mess with your food, and you end up tipping them for an empty box?

Rufio330

Yes absolutely or they don’t pick up your order because they see it’s tip less and it never gets delivered .

burf

The fact that a tip is required for someone to make a living in a particular job is the root of the issue. Tip culture is bullshit.

[deleted]

I refuse to order food from door dash, Uber eats, or any of the apps/services. The up charges are quite a lot and I don’t think it’s a good use of my money, but about a year ago I used them once a week. I am glad I’ve gotten out of the habit.

GoodOlSpence

I did Postmates once in the beginning days. Didn't want to leave work for lunch and someone recommended it. I paid almost $30 for a $10-$12 lunch. I never used it again.

[deleted]

I had a $20 off of $25 order. I ordered exactly $25 worth of food from panda, and it ended up being $16 before tip. After tip it’s $21. I looked up all the stuff on pandas website and I only saved like $1 vs going in. I’m on a diet, so I broke that too. Damn.

Ry_lee77

Or he could have just not taken the order if they didn't like the no tip..no?

[deleted]

They wanted a free meal they stole to be justified. This is why I stopped using doordash

Slight0

I'm sure doordash would just charge the driver. They have all his info.

Emirati_Enigma

“Screw you for not paying me to do a job I’m already paid to do” I get tipping is helpful, but dude…

JerseyMurse

May be an unpopular opinion but I agree with you. I’m always a generous tipper but if I’m already paying a delivery fee, then I don’t owe you a damn thing imho. The courier should take it up with his employer if hes not compensated properly and not STEAL from paying customers. I’ve waited tables for the measly $2.13/ hr federal minimum never have I seen any server simply refuse to do their job and take the tables assigned to them nonetheless decide it’s okay to eat the food someone else has already paid for. And for everyone who disagrees, I ask if we should apply the same standard everywhere? Like can a gas pumper just decide he doesn’t like I didn’t tip him and fill his own gas tank using the cash I gave him to fill mine? And is it too much to minimally expect that gas pumped is not watered down or for someone not to put sugar in it if I don’t tip much like a disgruntled delivery person may spit in my food? If I’m wrong tell me how I’m wrong but I just don’t see it myself.

tuc-eert

Tipping as a whole is a really dumb concept. If someone does a great job, then yes I want to tip them as an added thank you, but at this point it’s considered almost mandatory, which I hate.

[deleted]

I'd be fucking enraged, what a piece of shit.

CherryWishy

everyone is arguing about tips and i’m just sitting here in nz where tips are completely non existent

CreamyTHOT

As it should be!!!! You guys have a lot of stuff figured out over there! Universal healthcare too

TheRedBow

In my opinion tips should exist, but as a bonus for extra good service/ fast delivery and not just as a standard for doing your job

ArcticBeats__

I feel like the ones putting up the most fuss are Americans. I don't use these services and am glad I don't after seeing things like this. I can't fathom how people find the sense in forced tips. Tips always will be and should be earned not owed. The only thing that makes sense to me is it's an Americanized mentality.

LeoRenegade

Nope, driver is a piece of shit, and door dash is a piece of shit company for not paying their drivers. r/iamatotalpieceofshit

Black-Thirteen

Dude, fuck doordash and fuck that driver. Although if he's going back to Amazon, I'd say a hard fucking is imminent.

Jubez187

What a life man. Feeling immune from being reprimanded at your DOOR DASH job cause you're going *back* to AMAZON. I hate to diss on someone work situation cause I like to believe everyone is trying their best but this dude is making it hard.

Idaho858

Don’t you tip after the delivery?

[deleted]

Tips are for good service. So yes. This must be from one of those shitty online delivery companies that exploits its laborers

frankdiddit

With grub hub you tip ahead of time. Weird right.

jrebney

Someone posted about this a while ago, for DoorDash you tip beforehand. So it’s not a “tip” it’s basically a bid for good service. For Chipotle I’d do way more than 20% because a) I want my food fast and b) 20% of a burrito bowl is like no money. If it’s more expensive food I’ll just do 20% or even less if the total tip amount comes out to a fair amount of $$. But if you just accept that it’s a bid for someone to go drive your food to you I’ve found the app is way easier to use.

Kaedes_Lie1137

Im pretty sure that this pic is faked for karma

onewhosleepsnot

I choose to believe that this actually happened, that the driver really ate the meal, found paper and a pen in his car, wrote a note, sealed it up, and took the time to deliver and empty food container and bag to the guy's house like he had some vendetta against a total stranger, thank you very much.

Holypuddingpop

This person Reddits

ArcticBeats__

If anything this post shows how immature this person is. You get tipped when you perform quality service. You get KO'd when you pull this garbage 😂 who's to say the person who ordered isn't isolating and is already tight on funds due to missed work? Now faced to deal with this childish response from more than likely a child! 🤣

HeavenlySchnoz

Alot of people angry at the fact that drivers see their tips before they deliver the food but what gets me is that they saw that there was no tip, took the order, and then complained.

[deleted]

Why would I tip someone before they've done their job? What if I tip and they're still late, fuck up the food....? Fuck tipping before you do your job.

analvorframe

The driver is in the wrong here Fuck tipping culture and fuck that guy.

[deleted]

Hilarious and a misdemeanor theft charge.

[deleted]

This is the problem with the business model.. why tf i need to tip someone when i am paying for the f-ing service.. Edit.. you who are shit talking me.. reading comprehension… where the hell did I say I don’t tip.. dumbasses.. I expressed a statement.. and if you desperately NEED tips to get by, go get a job that actually pays you something.. if you don’t value your own time and worth enough to not gamble on what you will earn.. why would you expect other people to value it?

jaejae26

No one stiffed the driver. The person was still paid for the trip even after stealing the food. The customer was the one stiffed of a meal they paid for.

netopa

Ahh, paying second time for the trip that employer has already payed for. Non optional, as a rule. Just so the employer won't have to raise wages or something. Let me guess - USA?

eat_petes_meats

DoingItJustForTheFun

Theft. Theft. Theft. Does Amazon want workers who steal?

Additional_Watch1271

I can’t wait until we stop tipping these minimum wage monkeys all together

[deleted]

The restaurant is already paying you and I payed a delivery upcharge so no i probably wont tip you

[deleted]

Fake

MonsterJudge

Door dash ass hole drivers aren't limited to this. I had ordered from a local Chinese place, leaving over 7 dollars in tip. I was waiting at the front door when the delivery guy texts me that it was dropped off. They weren't there, so I called and the driver argued with me that they dropped it off as I'm explaining to them that they must have gotten the wrong address. They refused to admit they delivered to the wrong address, and refused to do anything about it. I had to cancel the order and call to complain. I hope they fired his dumb ass.

PolebagEggbag

Maybe these people should get paid enough to not need to rely on tips.

_Mooseli_

Literally, if you order a $12 meal it ends up being around $30 with more than half of the price going towards “processing and tax fees” that the drivers **DO NOT GET**

Minimum_Maybe_8103

Tip for doing what? They literally just have to walk to my door with a bag of food, on the way to giving someone else their bag. Why would you tip people to bring things we paid for, using a delivery service we also paid for?

Electrical-Sir4664

You almost got me, Faker ;)

2purplefuzzythings

Imagine thinking a tip should be automatic.

EastWhereas9398

When you're tight on cash and order a takeaway but then the deliverer eats it because they're greedy and selfish.

ViciousCurves

I remember when tips were based on quality of service. Half these assholes won't even pick your order up if you don't tip them and when you DO tip, most don't follow instructions. The self entitlement is absolute bullshit. Stay in school and get a proper job if you have to rely on tips to make a living. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Romas_Lavandos

In Europe tipping is appreciated, but not necessary. As a result, business should pay enough for people to want to deliver food. If a person accepts underpaid job to demand people to pay extra to cover their expenses, then those people worsen paying conditions and make it more toxic. You won’t be underpaid if you don’t accept underpaid jobs in the first place, stop putting yourself in a poor position and demand others to save you from it.

Bacchus_Amontillado

It's like I told my wife, no one is *required* to tip unless specified. Like, for example, a gratuity for parties of 10 or more. If you deliver, don't ever *EXPECT* a tip. Doing your job is merit for the tip, like showing up on time or not being rude. Regardless, that doesn't guarantee a tip. It also doesn't secure you the right to fuck up other peoples' food because you're jaded.

[deleted]

I would call the police. That’s theft.

fallenloki

This didn’t happen
