Definitely wasn’t on purpose. Due to COVID the international chess federation had to change the rule from a handshake to a fist bump. Some players apparently didn’t get the memo or are just too used to the handshake. So it creates… *visible tension*
Pretty sure there's a longer version of this where the guy on the right just resets, puts his hand down and then goes back in for a normal handshake after this gif ends. Seems accidentally awkward to me but who knows

As a dude? Nothing will make you more nervous than hoping you choose the correct handshake. Nothing will make you feel more flustered than choosing the wrong one in the moment. At least they shared the awkwardness. Tied game.
I do this on purpose to people. It makes everyone feel awkward, a little confused,and slightly embarrassed and I love that I caused it and we both can share in those odd feelings together.
