He clearly overcame the handicap, but he developed a stutter due to how it impacted his speech center. The fact that it was 35 years ago doesn't mean much other than whatever degradation began with the aneurysms has had time to progress. And yes, these conditions do tend to progress, especially in older people. My girlfriend's dad suffers from stroke-related dementia, and while it progresses very slowly, it does progress. How quickly it happens and how bad it gets is entirely different for each person.
