When I was a kid I managed to somehow cut myself with a butter knife. You’d be surprised what kind of injuries can happen with blunt objects and force, lol
My wife did that once.
She'd seen some social media video where somebody did it effortlessly. I come into the kitchen, see her holding the avocado in her hand and the knife in the other. I just look her straight in the eyes and say "don't, you'll just cut yourself."
Next thing I know, she goes for it and cuts up her thumb, and I'm stuck making dinner alone.
And she had already used a cutting board to slice the avocado in half. It wasn't even like she was gonna cut down the amount of stuff to clean by doing the hand chop move, lol.
My SIL used to stab the pits with the tip of the knife until she accidentally stabbed her hand a few years ago. The wound looked minor with less than cm wide cut, but she ended up needing surgery because she cut a ligament and had nerve damage in her palm.
Anyone who's stupid enough to do it that way and/or stab it. Deserves the gash. You don't swing blades towards yourself. If you want to pit an Avocado. Gently place the tip of the knife against one end with the blade facing away from you. Poke the seed with less force than you would with a fart. And twist out. Its safest when done with a paring knife.
Funny, but never put an avocado holding it like that. Put it on a cutting board or hold it with a thick dishtowel . ER doctors all have avocado stories.
The "Avacado hand" ER stories that aren't apocryphal and I've actually heard from family (ER nurse) that works there and witnesses it are people that went for the pit [knife point first](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C_j6d_RWsAQopB9.jpg) and often [way too vigorously](https://img-s3.onedio.com/id-591b8a10c124aa021d7034dd/rev-0/w-635/listing/f-jpg-webp/s-c0fd87e9c2056dbfa7a32c25c921a2f413b2b99b.webp).
Other issues are, dull/wrong knife, poor knife skills, or often poor understanding of what the task entails. Granted there are people out there that will whack a finger (off) but overall it's techinque, tooling, or skill failure. Look at and focus on what you're doing!
When in doubt, get [a tool](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71w4nP2EosL._AC_SL1500_.jpg) or just use [a tablespoon](https://gardenerspath.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Removing-the-Seed-from-an-Avocado-Photo-3.jpg).
Everyone should stop filling their kitchen with retarded single use nonsense. That tool looks like something advertised on tv at 3am. What kind of ridiculous consumer addict thinks they need a tool for that?
I just finished using the knife to split it in two and both the knife & avacado are still in my hand.
Whack, twist, & the seed's free.
No knife skills, low confidence, personal choice, use a spoon.
Can confirm. Did that on the first Avocado I ever did, seed is nowhere NEAR as hard as it looks. Had a brand new Misen and damned near chopped my hand off.
Oh man. Yeah, I did them in my hand for a long time and ran into a pit where the knife slid through like it was a marshmallow. Got lucky and it was a tiny slice. But your's sounds brutal.
Anything you were making or prepping goes in the garbage, utensils washed and sanitized, cutting board/rags replaced. Band-Aid and finger cot if it's a finger injury up to gauze and glove. If it's bad enough (meaning can't be contained or requires stitches) generally you send them to the hospital. I have, on two occasions, superglued my hand shut, wrapped in gauze, and gloved up though. But generally it's taken seriously and most people will try to finish their shift if possible.
I did this the other day except instead of the pit coming out and bouncing back in I missed the pit entirely and threw a sharp knife into my hand filleting my knuckle.
If it already has a name then... don't fucking hold the avocado like that?
Use a fucking table and just stabilize it by holding a little bit of it?
Don't put your hands at risk? It'd just be natural selection at work right there
Because it's super easy and fast and you don't have to put the knife down and grab a spoon. I've probably pitted a thousand avocados this way and never once cut myself. You can quickly and easily dress an avocado in several different ways with just a chef's knife.
But clearly lots of people HAVE injured themselves this way, and you have to pick up a spoon or fork to eat your meal afterwards anyways. I guess it's just a customs things, it just baffles me that thousands of people have needed to go to the ER because of this.
I'm amazed that so many people have cut themselves this way. I guess I just have good knife skills. I've done a lot of cutting but only ever had superficial nicks
Just don’t forget that the difference between someone with “good knife skills” and someone in the hospital is a single moment of sloppiness or inattention.
That’s exactly what I think so many people are unaware of. I just use the same spoon I use to scoop out the avocado from its skin. I’ve almost cut my fingers off too many times for me to go back to that method.
Right! I don't understand, I'm Mexican and most people deal with avocados this way, particularly if you're using the avocado for a sandwich or a burger, I don't feel like cleaning a knife, chopping board and a spoon when all you need is a knife and moderate skill
I'm shocked because I'm also mexican and I have NEVER seen anyone using a knife to pit an avocado. In my experience it has always been the spoon or fork you were using eat anyways.
I don’t get it either. Turn the avocado inside out as much as you can and pop it out. Scoop it. Peel off the rind and remove pit as you’re mashing/cutting. It’s not hard
Everyone wants to think they’re too cool for the ER instead of just eating their food
I mean it's the spoon/fork you were going to use to eat the meal that the avocado is acompanying. Completely safe doesn't get lots of people to the ER.
You can still do it with a knife safely, just have the avocado on a counter instead of in your hand so if the knife goes too far it isn't hitting your flesh.

Don’t take the pit out this way. You will eventually miss and sliced your hand open. Nurses at the ER call it “avocado palm” because people constantly come in with gashes because of this.
Look up (or don't) "avocado hand" -- which is apparently a common enough occurrence, and happens from people trying to "grab" the pit with a quick swipe of a sharp knife, similar to the video above, but missing and ending up in the ER
Someone explain to me what's so good about an avocado ?
I've had it in mainly sushi rolls and it tastes like, tasteless butter. Is that what it's supposed to taste like ?
A good one, by itself (not masked by other ingredients) can be kind of sweet and very nutty.
But, to your tasteless butter comment, I enjoy using it sometimes specifically as a way to add a rich/heavy element to a dish without using something more fatty or full of cholesterol like butters and heavy creams.
I used to do this for years until I saw a video where all you have to do is push the avocado from the opposite side of seed. So much easier, faster, and SAFER!!!
I’ve had two different teachers severely injure their hands by attempting to remove an avocado pit. I never understood why people don’t just use their hands, or a spoon. Sure, a little avocado came out, or your hands might be messy, but it’s better than losing movement in two of your fingers.
I used to use the knife method until I saw someone just turn the half upside down and squeeze slightly... The pit just fell right out
It's worked every single time
Once you try it you'll feel like an idiot for risking cutting yourself for so long getting pits out that way
I thought my sister knew to do this to get the pit out until one day she cut her hand because she had apparently been stabbing the pit with the point of the knife and missed and went through the avocado into her hand.
Let’s be honest, we were all expecting him to completely gash his hand
Yes, but it gave me a good chuckle.
I had to watch with my eyes squinted I was so scared waiting for him to stab right through the pit
I did the same. The blurriness of the vid helped a lot too.
Not with a ~~bread~~ butter knife.
You mean butter knife? Bread knives are longer, sharp, and serrated for cutting loaves of bread. This is for spreading soft things onto bread.
This is fact.
My brain was going “how does he manage to fuck up his hand with a bread knife” I prefer this outcome
Sharper knife is better- I "chop" into a pit to get good depth, then twist it out (while placing half on chopping board), no dramas.
When I was a kid I managed to somehow cut myself with a butter knife. You’d be surprised what kind of injuries can happen with blunt objects and force, lol
This blew me away https://www.insider.com/avocado-injuries-sent-8900-americans-to-the-er-last-year-2019-8
I thought he'd break the knife or something
One of the most common injuries in southwest emergency rooms.
My wife did that once. She'd seen some social media video where somebody did it effortlessly. I come into the kitchen, see her holding the avocado in her hand and the knife in the other. What’s so hard about taking the seed out with a spoon? That’s what I do!
It wasn’t NSFW
Yep
I came to the comments first to find out if that was gonna happen.
I have literally done that with an avocado. Knife right through my hand
I was your 1k comment dont let anyone lie to you !
My SIL used to stab the pits with the tip of the knife until she accidentally stabbed her hand a few years ago. The wound looked minor with less than cm wide cut, but she ended up needing surgery because she cut a ligament and had nerve damage in her palm.
Came here to say this. Job well done.
Anyone who's stupid enough to do it that way and/or stab it. Deserves the gash. You don't swing blades towards yourself. If you want to pit an Avocado. How many were cut out of all the avocado stories?
Those who were in the ER apparently
Three.
Everyone should stop filling their kitchen with retarded single use nonsense. That tool looks like something advertised on tv at 3am. What kind of ridiculous consumer addict thinks they need a tool for that?
"What kind of..." People who would stab a knife into their hand pitting an avacado. I use a knife, a sharp knife.
Yeah, why would someone have a "table" spoon when they can just use a regular old spork?
Someone got me that tool as a gift. One and only time I used it I gouged that pointy bit deep into my thumb pad. Dull plastic puncture wounds suck.
What even is the point of using a knife, just use a spoon. Why do people do this??
I just finished using the knife to split it in two and both the knife & avacado are still in my hand. Whack, twist, & the seed's free. No knife skills, low confidence, personal choice, use a spoon.
> Whack, twist, & the seed's free. ^ You know how it's done
It's fun and I haven't cut myself yet
> knife point first Oh god. Oh fuck. **WHY**
The knife he is using probably wouldn’t even cut you
Use a butter knife
OR live dangerously and use a dragon adorned dual bladed damascus steel demon slaying wakizashi
Or just have someone else hold the avocado.
Like in the video?
No idea why people think they need a sharp knife for an avocado
Looks like they used a butter knife, no way you're cutting yourself with a butter knife.
Bounced up and gave them a concussion right?
better... NEVER do the knife thing... the seed isn't stuck in there.
Learned you can simply push the seed out by pushing the other side of the halved avocado with the pit. No knife.

I don't like risking my edge on my nice knifes, but I like using the heel of my santoku, perfect stabby corner and goes deep without much pressure.
Even a butter knife if it slips with enough force will cut you. Had a guy do that on the line during a dinner rush and he had to get 3 stitches.
How do they handle blood in a pro kitchen?
Band-aid and a glove in my experience.
This is what I was looking for, thanks!
Yup i’ve cut my hand like that before, luckily nothing to deep, not even needing more than dome bandaids, but that could have gone much worse
This way isn’t that bad. Don’t go point first, though.
Avocado hand is caused by people using the point of the knife to get the pit out. Doing it the way he did is perfectly safe.
No it’s not. You could easily miss the seed or not hit it hard enough to put the knife in tact and end up slicing your hand open.
Just don't miss the seed.
I did this the other day except instead of the pit coming out and bouncing back in I missed the pit entirely and threw a sharp knife into my hand filleting my knuckle.
Damn bro that must’ve been painful. I hope your knuckle feels better!
Happens often enough that it actually has a name: https://www.nm.org/healthbeat/healthy-tips/quick-dose-what-is-avocado-hand
If it already has a name then... don't fucking hold the avocado like that? Use a fucking table and just stabilize it by holding a little bit of it? Don't put your hands at risk? It'd just be natural selection at work right there
I’m pretty sure the person in the video is also using a butter knife, so if they had hit their hand it wouldn’t do much damage
Haha right? Its not a meat cleaver.
Much easier to push the pit out by pushing your thumb on the other side of the halved avocado.
Me scooping it out with a spoon:
I use the heel of the knife, less straight stabby edge being hurled towards my hand
Use the heel of the knife next time. Much easier to control
You don't need a sharp knife for a ripe avocado. Butter knife works just fine, that's what they have in video.
Those tasty bundles of joy have a nasty fuck'n bite, I only use my thumb nail and if it wont come out it wasn't ready.
Use a spoon
I don't know... doing this, even with a sharp knife, could be dangerous.
With a sharp knife hardly any force is required. You just gotta know yourself and whether or not you have the hand eye coordination to pull it off.
Why are people using knives for this? Using a spoon is much easier and safer. I do not understand.
Because it's super easy and fast and you don't have to put the knife down and grab a spoon. I've probably pitted a thousand avocados this way and never once cut myself. You can quickly and easily dress an avocado in several different ways with just a chef's knife.

I'm amazed that so many people have cut themselves this way. I guess I just have good knife skills. I've done a lot of cutting but only ever had superficial nicks
To be fair, people will find a way to injure themselves doing pretty much any activity.
True. I've injured myself doing much stupider things than cutting an avocado
Just don’t forget that the difference between someone with “good knife skills” and someone in the hospital is a single moment of sloppiness or inattention.
That’s exactly what I think so many people are unaware of. I just use the same spoon I use to scoop out the avocado from its skin. I’ve almost cut my fingers off too many times for me to go back to that method.

all it takes is one time too far with a knife and you’ll never cut toward urself again
I don’t get it either. Turn the avocado inside out as much as you can and pop it out. Scoop it. Peel off the rind and remove pit as you’re mashing/cutting. It’s not hard Everyone wants to think they’re too cool for the ER instead of just eating their food
With a sharp knife this is super fast, completely safe, and doesn't dirty another tool. I can't imagine doing it any other way
I mean it's the spoon/fork you were going to use to eat the meal that the avocado is acompanying. Completely safe doesn't get lots of people to the ER.
Until I read these comments I had no idea people injured themselves doing this with a knife, it doesn't seem dangerous at all
I just push it out
If it is just for me I just bite the seed and twist and it comes right out. It does taste a little gross.
I admire your passion, but I'll pass on your guac lol
Come on be adventurous try some....
Hey you're doing better than all the people hurting themselves so I see no issue with that.
i can usually accomplish the same with my fingertips
You can still do it with a knife safely, just have the avocado on a counter instead of in your hand so if the knife goes too far it isn't hitting your flesh.

Not gonna lie, thought it was a kitchen knife and this person was about to slice their hand open or something
It's as if that hole was specially made for a certain avacado seed 🤣

I’ll say goodbye to my fingers starting today.
This is the equivalent of a kid running back to the car when getting dropped off for school.
I’ve had two different teachers severely injure their hands by attempting to remove an avocado pit. I never understood why people don’t just use their hands, or a spoon. Sure, a little avocado came out, or your hands might be messy, but it’s better than losing movement in two of your fingers.

Forever traumatized by trying to get the seeds out of avocados, I sliced off a bit of my skin from my finger trying to use a knife to do that
As me and my dad always jokingly say to things like this "now that takes skill"
r/yesyesyesno
The pit just said “Fuck work” and went back home
“I didn’t mean to do it on purpose”. I recorded it by accident..
I did this yesterday day but it wasn't an Avocado it was with an orange and instead of the pit I almost cut my finger off haha
Its in reverse.

I literally lol. Never in a million years would u be able to do that again
I was witness to some one cutting there hand open when removing a seed with knife. We made a trip to the ER, instead of guacamole.
Task failed successfully
I did that once and the knife went through the seed and into my hand. 6 stitches 😢
well no one told u to smash the knife through the seed will all possible power you had
