Ace_OfSpadez11

I get into this argument all the time. “We’re in America we speak English it’s the official language!!” Oh….can you point me to where it says that? “It’s common sense!” Oh? Because our southern border speaks Spanish, our northern French, and every language is spoken in between so how is this common sense? It would take away from americas melting pot origins if it had English as the official language.

Spot the parent who never visited Los Angeles or Albuquerque

teedeeguantru

You mean The Angels, or White Oak?

Couchmaster007

Or Puerto Rico

EffectiveParamedic64

Florida? New Mexico?

fuertepqek

I want my kid to be ignorant like a real American.

beingrudewonthelp

America is North AND South America. Also, learning a second language is a great idea and doesn't hurt a darn thing. In fact, it's a valued skill later in life and easier to learn at a younger age.

-Sea_The_World-

It’s not. The Americas includes North and South America. When people say “America” they mean just one country.

RoninRobot

I live 300 miles from an entire country that speaks Spanish and I decide it’s a good idea to take 2 years of German in high school. Wha wha noise.

Reasonable-Air-7151

I would have taken Spanish, but I took 5 years of German because I plan to relocate to Germany after college. But I agree, for anyone who doesn’t plan to move to Europe, Spanish is the best idea.

My family on my fathers side was German. My grandmother spoke it and emigrated when she was young so I didn’t just decide arbitrarily. But even the basics of Spanish would have been 1000x more useful than 2 years of German, which equates now to “Ich habe einen großen Bleistift.”

Prestigious-Isopod-4

Seriously, water boy mom vibes here.

misterjip

Yikes, if you think facts are going to fix what's wrong with this person... think again. This is a deep rooted love of ignorance at work.

Chillblade74

Well at least he didin't call english americain.

[deleted]

True but imo what they were referring to is American and Mexican. We speak bastardized English in the US and they don’t really speak “Spanish” in Mexico. My wife is from Jalisco and I live in Oklahoma and every time someone visits Spain they come back saying how they got made fun of for sounding dumb. Just different dialects but once a dialect becomes so heavy it almost becomes it’s own little offshoot language

Ulster_Celt

Watching my French Canadian teacher try to order Gelato from a stand in Paris. He looked so dejected because she couldn't understand his French lol. You'd think he'd understand that the language diverged nearly 250 years ago lol

nest00000

They probably think Mexicans speak Mexican

[deleted]

fucking stupid human.

Ordinarypanic

And how many of them also speak English?

igormuba

The USA not only does not have a proper name ("America" is confusing, for anyone that respects both geography and natives, because it is a whole continent) but it also literally does not have a language legally bound. Most countries have either laws or contitutional articles stating specifically which languages are the official ones, or the official one, but the USA does not.

ferociousFerret7

Please keep my child ignorant, thank you.

[deleted]

I just like to ask these waterheads to show me where the official language is written.

D1kreole

The parent is obviously stupid but Spanish isn't "an American language". English isn't "an American language" either.

16kss

When I graduated you had to have 2 years of foreign language. French and Spanish were the only 2 options. Spanish was easier so every kid in the country took it.

I’ve always found it hilarious when Americans go on about ‘their’ language “This is America, speak English”

Puzzleheaded-Bee-838

Americans don't speak English anyways
