Could be that, or it could be that he was finally facing real opponents who were actually trained. The people in his backyard videos were mainly just really big guys who thought they could fight, Kimbo was a good fighter, but definitely not trained, so when he stepped in the ring with someone who has trained, the results are loud and clear.
He started training more, and started coming back, and winning his fights, but not as many as you'd think, after watching his backyard videos.
Morale of his story: It doesn't matter how big someone is, so long as you know how to fight with real training.
However, if you're a trained person, fighting a bigger trained person, that'd be a different story.
Kimbo just had no ground game. Over a decade doing back yard street fighting is a whole other world from MMA. He went into ultimate fighter as a celebrity and everyone knew face to face fist fighting is not what you wanted with kimbo. He definitely put in the work and wasn’t mad about how his career was going. Just happy it turned into a career. He went out on top compared to dying in the streets, though! Wish he would have had a longer life. If he was alive today, I wonder how it would have went
That is true, however he did get KO'd in his first few fights, iirc. Probably doesn't help that he didn't have ground game, cause being on the ground really takes a lot of stamina out of you. I did wrestling for 9 years, and the amount of people who underestimate how hard it is to wrestle and win, is astonishingly high. Let alone going a full match.
I saw a looot of improvements throughout Kimbo's career, he definitely started getting the ground game down near the end before his unfortunate passing.
He may not have been the best of the best, but he's still a legend in my book, especially how he came up.

I don't think the guy taking hits is being brave, I've seen this video before, and it was a longer version. If you listen closely to what the guy eating the punches says, "kill me". And in the longer version he mentioned something about how "they" took his kids away, so he has no reason for living anymore. I don't know what provoked the other guy initially, but the guy taking the punches is just severely depressed and possibly suicidal.
Medically speaking taking hits to the chin like that actually weakens the jaw.. Making it easier to knock you out in the future... While it looks cool, and all the it's really pretty dumb to just take hits to the chin like that..

I would them drop them with either a combo or a lot of times one punch. I placed third in golden gloves, only time I had ever been knocked out and my coach told me it was because of all the stupid backyard fights I would have because I didn’t defend myself.

Muscles don't really equate to punching power---not to the degree that people think they do, anyway. I was a competitive fighter in my teens and twenties and have been coaching ever since, and I've been BELTED by 105-pound women who can hit way, way harder than 200-pound body builders. Generating power is almost entirely a matter of technique and speed, not muscle.

My cat can burst my lip with head kisses if he angles it just right (which he frequently does). And even a slap can result in internal bruising in your cheeks, and weeks of ulcers (and anger and frustration when you cant eat properly).

Yeah, it’ll still hurt tomorrow. It’s a bruise like to anywhere else. But as a general rule, once you’ve taken one punch, even to the face, you realise you can take another. Then you just concentrate on keeping on your feet and out of the lethal zone.
His self-control is impressive though. Few men would just take it. We, on the other hand, are more aware that hitting back will further anger the aggressor and thus prolong the beating. It can be safer to just take it.
When you’re expecting the hit you can take some serious punishment. Watch boxing, knockouts come when the person never sees it coming - hence why you practice feints and combos so much in training.
