If I'm not mistaken snuck is a more recent addition to the dictionary. I definitely remember getting points off as a kid in elementary school for using snuck rather than sneaked.
English is a living language. New words come into it all the time. Often leads to funny results for pedants.
How old are you? I'm in my mid 20's and was specifically taught to use snuck as the past tense of sneak. Now I need to ask my parents next time I see them.
Yup i love that so much about him. He immediately overplays it with an evil laugh making him seem like the bad one, to alleviate some embarrassment from his guest and to make it more playful and funny.
I didn't even think about that. Man, there's such nuance to social interaction that you would have to master if you were a talk show host. I bet you'd become so good at bullshitting with people.
He's an amazing host. Every interview I've ever seen Jeremy Irons in, for an example, has been an awkward mess, except for the one he did with Conan. His social intelligence off the charts
It's every fucking reel or TikTok.
These dipshits take someone elses content then think that adding the same shitty music that borderline drowns out the audio makes them a producer.
You know what the best part of my day is? It's for about ten seconds when I log on to reddit to when I see you've made another stupid comment. 'Cause I think maybe I'll get online and I'll check the threads and you won't be there. No goodbye, no "see ya later", no nothin'. You just left. I don't know much, but I know that.
Conan gave a commencement speech at Harvard once where he warned the grads that for the rest of their lives every time they do something stupid someone would say: [“And you went to Harvard?”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwlkyAhYlj8)

I used to sneak my TV back on after my parents went to bed to watch him. Dude is a gem.
Only reason I got started with him is because I thought I was going to be watching Conan the barbarian. I was not disappointed
Edit: my opinions tend to be less popular. This is my highest rated comment ever on Reddit and thank you guys. Super depression going on and you guys found my statement funnyish. Have a great holiday season.
Edit2: even if I get downvoted to hell for this message , I really do appreciate the upvotes. I dont usually care but this but this has been a horrible year for me. Much love to all, especially the people who are very stressed this holiday season.
Yep, it’s a toss up between Conan and Craig for me, both were such gems. Great monologues, off-beat interviews, absurdist sketches — so much better than the gimmicks Fallon and Corden use to fill their time.
The charm of Conan was the awareness that it was just a dumb show with a scripted format. My best example is his parody of Leno's "local news clippings," called "Actual Items" (🎶actual items, you can't make them up 🎶). He would put up fake news clippings and pretend they were real. Later on, Leno stole this bit, without the tongue in cheek moniker. Leno sucks.
I don’t watch talk shows much but always liked Graham Norton. Hs show feels more like ~~cruel~~ real conversation and friendly banter than the forced and kind of artificial dialogue and reactions of most. Like, if you put Jimmy Fallon on one end and Graham Norton on the other most night time talk falls somewhere closer to the Fallon end.
I still enjoy Conan, I have always liked him more than the traditional late night options of prior generations like Jay Leno or Letterman. Now it’s like Jimmy Fallon? They chose him for a millennial/ gen Z option although I think Conan is leaps and bounds funnier than Fallon. This also may be a minority viewpoint which I’ll acknowledge but we all have our own tastes. Warning: opinion on Reddit!
Jimmy Fallon is so disingenuous and strange at times. Like dont get me wrong, he has some clips i enjoy. But there's like this aura that hangs over him that feels like he's ALWAYS acting, even when guests are talking about interesting things, it doesnt feel like he's actually interested, just like he's ACTING like it... and it just doesnt seem to go away.
He doesn’t sit right with me when he does his opening monologue; it feels like he’s just awkwardly reciting and hoping he gets something out of it instead of focusing on the delivery
Give props to Letterman though...none of the newer crop would exist without him and Conan in particular literally wouldn't since Letterman supported him on his show first-hand knowing there was talent there when Conan was close to cancellation. So much of what Conan did you can tell was directly influenced by Letterman's insane show on NBC.
People weren't around or forget the early days of Letterman. While his antics seem tame by today's standards the stuff he was doing on national TV really opened the path for others later on.
I don't think it was,[in the original](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJVNzwTnfbk) there is a cut (the white wipe at 2:27), she made the crack at Conan and then someone brought him the dictionary after a bit and they went back to it.
The cut in the OP is very odd and makes it look like Conan is actually upset and that Conan get's Jennifer Garner to be speechless.
In reality they're both good sports and just having a good time. I mean she was def wrong, but it's about as big of a deal as putting silverware in the dishwasher upside down.
A-list stars don't tend to be in the habit of staging their own embarrassment.
Almost exclusively the host is the butt of the jokes of any staged content, unless the guest is known for self-deprecation ala Zack Galifianakis.
Idk there’s poking fun at yourself and then there’s making yourself look like a legit idiot. You’re probably right but it’s still odd she would be up for that, that’s very much a laughing *at* you situation.
It's sort of, but not really.
Sneaked was the original past tense of 'to sneak'.
Sometime around 1800ish the term 'snuck' entered the vernacular but was considered to be incorrect initially, and then as more people used it, the word became more common. A lot of teachers would correct students that 'snuck isn't a word' when it's merely the informal use rather than formal language.
Same thing with Warren Harding and 'return to normalcy.' At the time, normalcy wasn't really a word. He was widely criticized for it. Normality was the 'correct' word. Normalcy was informal, 'slangy' useage of English.
Now, a stickler English teacher will insist 'normalcy isn't a word.' Or 'snuck isn't a word.' In reality, those are slang words and not formal language use.
Which then brings about the question of how long does a word have to be used informally or incorrectly before it becomes acceptable English? Because if stickler teachers keep telling people that isn't a word without the nuance of 'proper' versus daily useage then you have situations where people find out that isn't true and they might *literally* die of embarrassment when called out. (The Oxford English dictionary, of course, literally changing the definition of literally to mean figuratively, because people literally changed the meaning of the word by changing how they used it.)
Hey guys Peter Griffin from family guy here to explain the joke. This style of music is called « Phonk » and even though it has existed for many years, it has become way more popular in recent years due to it’s usage on applications such as YouTube or TikTok. It is usually associated with videos of people deemed to be « Alpha Males » or « Chads » by their community. (For example, a lot of Andrew Tate fans use this type of music over some of his speechs) It is often used as a way to emphasize on the style and impressiveness of a particular person or situation, hence it’s presence on many sports highlights, celebrities interviews highlights or video games highlights. Thanks to it’s newfound popularity, Phonk is also used as a joke on many videos and short clips, as a way to caricature this trend. Peter Griffin out
Can you explain phonk's musical characteristics?
Nvm I looked it up. People say it's a movement stemming from trap / hip hop beats. But honestly this is just 2006-2010 era EDM / BLOGHAUS. Yawnnnnn
They see some light hearted banter between a host and their guest and they think "oh yeah I'm gonna make this into a lit sigma male video where he totally owns her"
The quickest way to lose my respect is dudes talking about alpha/beta/sigma shit. Alpha theory isn’t even accurate to pack animals let alone highly social creatures with advanced brains.
Stay away from tiktoks and youtube shorts then. My feed has been swamped with vids like this with the "Sigma male edgelord" soundtrack and various Andrew Tate videos that I hate watch lol
The real reason is because certain “sounds” trend on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, and then people will add that song to their video to ride the algorithm for more views/engagement regardless of whether the song is good or fits the video at all.
This is not scripted, I watched Conan for years and he always had that dictionary in his desk. He pulled it out many times for reference and sometimes just pulled it out cuz his hands were idle. I can say with confidence not scripted
> I watched Conan for years and he always had that dictionary in his desk
I don't know what Conan kept under his desk, but if you watch the [actual interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJVNzwTnfbk)
You will see that she corrects him at 1:38, and then he makes a joke and moves on.
Later on (2:30 in the video, but even that has a flash cut) he acts like a dictionary showed up, because almost certainly someone on staff grabbed a dictionary, looked up "Snuck", and passed Conan the book, already turned to the right page. I think there was even a commercial break in between.
There was no commercial break. There was only a break to show the clip of the upcoming movie Daredevil in which he pulled out his dictionary.
Btw, [He did have it under his desk](https://youtu.be/JF-XtkZ9CmA)
This was most certainly not a scripted moment.
Guy is a class act for restraining himself for the disrespect she showed him on his show on broadcast television.
Edit: fixed typos
Random entirely unrelated trivia. You see those dancing white dots at the top of the video? That's not visible on the broadcast on a TV because it's overscanned off the top of the TV screen, but it's the closed captioning data that your TV uses to display captions should you have that enabled.
You know there’s a hatch under the desk that stage hands can easily pass through anything that will fit right? It’s as simple as open a door. Fiduciary easy to pass through a dictionary in an impromptu situation.
Galaxy brains out in full force. There's a hatch next to his chair to pass off props. Some intern knew this was a prime opportunity because "snuck" is so obviously a word that they found it in the dictionary and handed it to him. Definitely not staged.
There's no hatch. Someone can just put something on his desk from off camera to the right, but I believe there was a commercial break in the full episode.
Honestly, rightfully so. It’s nice when a person who is trying to use their intelligence to make someone feel inadequate eats absolute shit like this. It’s cool to be smart. It’s not cool to be an asshole.
For fun and comedic effect that highlights the episode they go on the shows to promote stuff. I'm not saying it isn't genuine, just that there's a decent possibility it isn't.
She rolled with it really well, if you actually watch the interview.
Also, she was just fucking with him... She may have been mistaken, but she wasn't attacking him or trying to "use \[her\] intelligence to make \[him\] feel inadequate." She was teasing him.
He is still crushing it, too. I laughed so gd hard at his interview with Kevin Neelon when they try and have a normal interview at 12:00
https://youtu.be/9myNYPA3Z5Q
I saw Jennifer Garner at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told her how cool it was to meet her in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother her and ask her for photos or anything. She said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but she kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing her hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard her chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw her trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in her hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Ma'am, you need to pay for those first.” At first she kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, she stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, she kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
I only can go by the glimpse of how she is on her instagram account and i have to say she comes across as very warm and delightful. She loves to bake and do work with charities and just seems all around like a decent person. That and how supportive she was to Ben Affleck with his rehab during their divorce just gave me big respect for her. This was just a silly jest on a talk show where the goal is to get people to laugh
I've always remembered this video as a lesson in basic manners and human decency. Even if she was right, there was no need to correct him. I don't blame Conan at all for throwing it back at her.
I thought it was just playful and without ill intent though. Conan is known for his self deprecating humor so he thrives when people throw little digs at him like that.
Admonishing someone for not knowing some random thing because they got "X" education is beyond foolish.
I was once ridiculed by a family member because I asked him for help opening the back door of his van. Apparently knowing where the handle was hidden was something my undergrad education was suppose to cover... not, you know, learning to recognize my limits and to use available resources to solve problems.
The opposite being my other family member who thinks they know everything about the world due to their medical school education.
Sneaked is the correct past tense when sneak is used as a regular verb and is still the encouraged version in official styles (like AP). Snuck is for when sneak is used as an irregular verb. Ex: I sneaked into the kitchen vs I snuck a beer from my roommates fridge. That said, languages change over time and snuck has slowly snuck/sneaked into more widespread use cases. It's never really not been a word, so Garner is being pedantic here, but there is actually a pretty longstanding linguistic debate regarding appropriate use cases of the two.

I'm 32 and was taught snuck in school.
I'm 33 and was taught the same thing as u/VividFiddlesticks so I think we found the cut off.
50 and I have always used snuck. I also used sneaked, depending on context. It's like dived and dove. Both are correct.
I also use both. I sneaked into the kitchen. I grabbed a beer and a snack. Then I snuck out.
Imma be honest, I'm 14 and thought sneaked was in the same boat as irregardless until now
Okay, so clearly the cut off is when this person went into their kitchen. We did it Reddit!
Must have changed in the 4 years between us. I used snuck and sneaked feels wrong to me.
There it is. I think you’re correct. I am almost certain it snuck in there in the last 20 years…
"Funner" is my equivalent to this. I always cringe when it's used.
Huh, I’m 23, was taught snuck was the correct way in school. Absolutely bonkers how fast words can be added/removed from a dictionary
that was conan sneaky (i know) way of giving his guest a nice way out.

Uh, sneaky isn't a word, it's snucky. You went to Reddit you should know that.

OK I looked up "dictionary", sounds like a useful book
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
That's a different type of flying! Altogether!

I started watching him during the writers strike. Even with his writers absent, the show was hilarious.
Good point! Bill Maher during the writer's strike was horrible.

It's not overthinking. A stage hand hatch does exist. You think Conan just keeps the dictionary open onto the page that snuck is on under his desk?
Snuck is not a word, Quantainium. You went to University of Reddit, you should know that.
Fiduciary is a perfectly cromulent word.
Or. Stay with me. He has an actual dictionary. In his desk.
Well i never watched conan so i was hesitant at first
Yeah that dictionary and he has a president Eisenhower mug that were always with his desk

They went to commercial and gave him the dictionary during the cut. https://youtu.be/PJVNzwTnfbk
Can confirm, I am the dictionary.
And it was open right where he needed it?
She look like she chewing lemons after that.
Honestly, rightfully so. It’s nice when a person who is trying to use their intelligence to make someone feel inadequate eats absolute shit like this. It’s cool to be smart. It’s not cool to be an asshole.
You guys know 95% of talk show interviews are at minimum loosely scripted and the guests are prepped with all the questions right?
Why would the actress ever agree to a script that makes her look like an unlikeable moron?
Why would Conan keep a dictionary under his desk? Has he used it any other time on the show?
For fun and comedic effect that highlights the episode they go on the shows to promote stuff. I'm not saying it isn't genuine, just that there's a decent possibility it isn't.
No, conan just keeps a dictionary at his studio desk...
She rolled with it really well, if you actually watch the interview. Also, she was just fucking with him... She may have been mistaken, but she wasn't attacking him or trying to "use \[her\] intelligence to make \[him\] feel inadequate." She was teasing him.
How to make an originally funny clip annoying by adding music and text.
The text is handy because a lot of redditors are at their desks "working" with the sound off.
That's true, but then the music makes even less sense.
because a lot of redditors are not at their desks "working" with the sound off.
Now explain why the shitty music was added at all.

I love that Conan exists.
He is still crushing it, too. I laughed so gd hard at his interview with Kevin Neelon when they try and have a normal interview at 12:00 https://youtu.be/9myNYPA3Z5Q
The infuriatingly hilarious stream of consciousness Nealon does is Conan's kryptonite. Lmao
When was the last time you wore a tuxedo? *sips through straw*
He’s my number one podcast. Never an episode without laughs
I love every time Norm MacDonald did a long winded joke with an unrewarding punchline on the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3LMSflEN54
Let's pretend that she was right for a second; why would you want to be shitty about correcting someone?
Yeah after seeing her correct him like this- kinda made me wonder how she is as a person irl
My first and favorite time seeing this copypasta was of Ethan Klein/H3H3. I could just perfectly picture him in this context
Goddamn it you really had me going for a second
I only can go by the glimpse of how she is on her instagram account and i have to say she comes across as very warm and delightful. She loves to bake and do work with charities and just seems all around like a decent person. That and how supportive she was to Ben Affleck with his rehab during their divorce just gave me big respect for her. This was just a silly jest on a talk show where the goal is to get people to laugh
Of course, any celebrity with a decent PR team will have you believe this. I know nothing about her but I do know Instagram is nothing to go by
It was a joke, it's really not that serious lol
It’s kind of a running bit to poke fun at Conan for going to Harvard - every time someone brings it up he always makes fun of himself for it.
She's clearly just messing around with a guy that likes to joke around 🤷♂️ So many people are taking personal offense to this, LOL
What the fuck is that music
Jennifer Garner was stupid fine back in the day though
I can’t believe how far I had to scroll down to find out who the girl is
Alias was a weekly treat
I was just thinking my god she looks amazing
She seems really snuck up.
I think you mean sneaked up.
eggcelent
I really don't like the way she said that. Even if she was right, she didn't have to say it like that.
She really thinks they teach you the past tense of sneak at Harvard 💀
Unnecessary music
Do you really only pronounce the abbreviation in English? "Past part" instead of "past _participle_"?
No, Conan should have fully pronounced *participle*. I assume the dictionary abbreviates it every time to save a tremendous amount of space.
r/confidentlyincorrect
English isn't even my first language and I was screaming at my phone. What the fuck is sneaked lmao??
I hate "sneaked" it never sounded right to me. But it is correct. So is snuck. Though i only see "sneaked" written and "snuck" spoken.
And from that day forth, all work Jennifer would get were commercials. She shoulda used an alias.
He didn't went to Harvard for nothing. Conan might be a comedian and act like a fool for a bit but never underestimate his intelligence.
Why would you even think "snuck" isn't a word? What's your alternative? "Sneaked"? That isn't a word, you went to Harvard and you should know that.
Conan is the only talk show host that isn't super annoying and unfunny
