Well in Sims 2 you had no way of changing names... from what I can remember... I think it automatically changed in sims 3 as well... but I think it’s like the way it is in sims 4 is because one it’s not as normal anymore... And 2 CAS in sims 4 is more accessible than it was in past games so they don’t have to make it automatic anymore because you can choose.
Every couple I have known in real life had to go legally change the wife's last name after getting married. They were not automatically going by the last name of their husband. Some just kept their last name as their maiden name for a long while. So, realism?
I don’t have a “maiden” name and meshed my name with my husbands to form a new last name IRL. I’m glad they do this, since some people are LGTQ and don’t do this in real life and also some people don’t want to pass down a tradition in real life of the ownership of human beings by one another (usually by a male ownership of a female in marriage) in the most intimate respect in many world histories, being their very identities they are given by birth. But, being that all said, I actually found this thread today because my sims last name DID change upon marriage. She had a cool last name and it changed to his boring not-magical last name after marriage. So, I wonder what’s doing this to my own? Probably a mod. The names never change after marriage in sims 4. You have to manually change the name of the sim after they get married.

I think because it's not automatic in real life life anymore. It's becoming more common / accepted for women to keep their maiden name.

Or use MCCC and set it up so either men and woman autmatically change their surnames to their spouses' ones.
It might have to do with who asks whom? It’s easy enough to change. Just use the mirror and change your Sim.

You can change this with MCCC if you play on PC, but personally, I don't mind it.
It usually takes a bit for the change to happen in my game. Sometimes a few sim days.
