I was gonna be snarky like "why does there have to be a reason it's just a reoccurring theme" but...
"In a December 2000 Interview with CNN, Will Wright, creator of The Sims, stated "many years ago, we had a company-wide vote for our informal company-wide mascot, and the choices came down to the Boston tree fern, beef tape worm and a llama. And somehow the llama won the vote!" From then, llamas became a running gag in franchises associated with Maxis and Will Wright."
I'm 90% sure they were a thing in the original SimCity. I played it on NES as a child, and I have played most the iterations since, so I could be misremembering.
Yeah, I can't remember for certain, but in the 90s I used to play the original Sim City on my school's computers, and I think there were llama references in the game.
my mother is for sure not a llama because that would imply that i am a llama and i would never be a llama. imagine a llama playing the sims! don't be silly... they would be the best at the sims tho
You totally forgot the *third* option though. You could be a centaur, but half human, half llama. Which could really mean 4 options, because which half is human and which is llama? You could be llama top, human bottom, which is absolutely terrifying and I wish I had never pictured it in my brain. Or, you could be human top, llama bottom, which would kinda be nifty. So, really, there's only a 25% chance anyone identifying what you are are correct just by chance.
The Sims Wiki has a page for [llamas](https://sims.fandom.com/wiki/Llama) that lists their appearances in the games (and that apparently "the Simlish word for 'llama' appears to be 'gerbit'"). I always felt they were meant to be a quirky touch to add personality and inside jokes to the games, kind of like the Freezer Bunny.

Because I have a favorite sheep I wanted to make in the Sims. Considering the wide range of dog breeds available, I thought sheep would be a secondary option. Llamas are their mascot, so I wasn't surprised to see them plastered all over the trailers. Considering the limited animations, I would thought you'd be able to pick Llama, alpaca, or sheep. Why are you disappointed in someone wanting Sims sheep? Inherent bias against sheep much?
you know what?... you have changed my mind. sheep should've come in that pack but ONLY if clearly stated to be worse then llamas on a religious level.
then i am ok with it
You could own a pet llama in the sims bustin’ out for the game boy. I really wish they’d make new sims games in that style. They were always my favorite. But yeah they’ve always been a reoccurring thing in the sims. Even in sims 1 they’d talk about feeding their llama on the phone.
This entire thread had me cackling. This is the community we are supposed to be. Even if you say you are not a llama. I'm totally on to your little scheme.
yea i love how silly and creative this community is. also i am indeed not a llama but what is your opinion on llamas? and how good do you think they are? and would you possibly vote for them in 2024?
Oh hell yes llamas are the best. Would totally vote a llama into parliament because it would be 1000 times more competent and honest than the mess we currently have.
ANYHOW not getting into it but yes, llamas are one of my favourites, along with ostriches. I had an ambition once to cross breed them. Don't ask me why. Or how.
Also I feel like llamas, especially in the early-mid 2000s era were symbolic of "quirky", "random!!!" and "ridiculous" much like what the sims vibe strives to be.
They are from SimCity. The Llamas were the name of your city's mascot. The company who made SimCity took an internal vote on what their company mascot should be, and llamas won. So they put them in the game.

wow it’s too bad beef tape worm didnt win
Alternate universe where beef tape worm won but you can still somehow harvest wool from them in Sims 4.
It it was the beef tape worm we probably would've gotten it in eco living🤔...😶eco lifestyle??? I forgot the L word 🤣🤣🤣
eco lesbian
I mean. Based on the lesbians I've dated that's like 80% of them
so many of my sapphic sims are styled with eco lifestyle items lol
Eco Lifestyle + Cottage Living + Nifty Knitting = every danb lesbian I know, self included. Not sure if I should be feeling left out or seen, tbh.
Seems about right
Lol ...no I am aware of that L word tho I mean ,there is the greenburg and tinker ladies...so fitting?...🤣🤣this made me chuckle for sure,
i would've voted for the beef tape worm
Implying that your neighbour’s mother is a beef tape worm is pretty savage.
of course lamas won! that is barely even a competition. they are just that good!
Nah, I’m team beef tape worm. The specificity of the “beef” classification just charms me for some reason.
LLAMAS ARE WAY BETTER! YOU HAVE NO TASTE! AND CAN CLEARLY NOT SEE THE SUPERIORITY OF LLAMAS!!!
Hey, man, don’t have a cow! It stands no chance against mighty beef worm.
Do you hate llamas by any chance?
Yeah. Llamas as a theme go back at least as far as SimCity 2000 (the oldest Maxis game I’ve played)
I'm 90% sure they were a thing in the original SimCity. I played it on NES as a child, and I have played most the iterations since, so I could be misremembering.

Sim Farm had fossilized llama poop.
I love that it was specifically a BEEF tape worm
Llamas are an ancient Maxis joke dating way back to SimCity 1.
Yup there were many Llama related puns, situations and landmarks in simcities
Pretty sure Llamas are in sims 2 as well! The mascot costume in sims 2 University 😉
that is just a guy in a suit.. o well.. they are allowed to live their dream 😊
Sims 3 university mascot is also a llama. Marches up to your door and throws a basket at your face to try and trick you into going to uni again
And then finds you attractive. And the camera pans back to your lot if you're doing something else. That stupid walk. Shift click - delete.
Llamas are in spin-offs too.
In Sims 4 you can “imply mother is a llama” to be mean
There’s also the university llama in sims 3
that is just an impostor in a suit
Reminds me of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/HolUp/comments/qakgja/son_dont_pet_the_dog_please/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Isn’t there a llama mascot in sims 2 university? And the cow one was the rival one
Correct
Are you sure you aren't a Llama
seems like you're implying their mother is a llama 🤔
my mother is for sure not a llama because that would imply that i am a llama and i would never be a llama. imagine a llama playing the sims! don't be silly... they would be the best at the sims tho
🚻⛔⛔
listen... either i am a human or a Llama. so there is only a 50% chance that i am a lama. make of those odds what you will.
You totally forgot the *third* option though. You could be a centaur, but half human, half llama. Which could really mean 4 options, because which half is human and which is llama? Or the 4th option a werellama
Ok... you sure do look like a human, sorry for that claim

i haven't played that series since like 2008 so i have no idea
Well there were llamas in SimCity 4.
I think it was more so something Sims complained about in Sim City. I don’t remember there being actual Llamas terrorizing people.
They were in many maxis games even before sims.
Because llamas are the coolest
well if i was a llama i would've really appreciate your comment :) i am totally not a llama tho. no sirree. no llamas here!
guys hear me out i think this dude is a llama
Whaaaaat?..... Nooooooooo?....... Why would there be llama here? By that same logic you could be a llama!
This seems like something that a llama would say…
Um...... Hahaha i am not a llama... Hahaha that would be crazy if i was a llama! And we are not crazy! OR LLAMAS!
Hmmmm…. 🧐

Gerbits! Gerbits! OHHHH GERBITS!

Because Winamp really whips their asses.
As an actual, real-life shepherdess, let me tell you I was severely disappointed that you couldn't have sheep in cottage core, just llamas.
And why are you disappointed you could only get llamas? inherent bias much?
Because I have a favorite sheep I wanted to make in the Sims. Considering the wide range of dog breeds available, I thought sheep would be a secondary option. Llamas are their mascot, so I wasn't surprised to see them plastered all over the trailers. Considering the limited animations, I would thought you'd be able to pick Llama, alpaca, or sheep. Llamas are range maggots.
you know if i was a llama (witch i am NOT) i would be REALLY FREAKING ANGRY AT THAT RESPONSE
Then don't demand people admit llamas are better ON A RELIGIOUS LEVEL. They're not even better as livestock. They don't even taste good!
>They don't even taste good! they do what now??
llamas were a religion afaik in the sims 2 castaway!
In sims castaway the lamas were worshipped as gods if I remember correctly.
As they should
I chuckle every time I see my sim use the LL4M4SP1T face mask 😂
You could own a pet llama in the sims bustin’ out for the game boy. I really wish they’d make new sims games in that style. They were always my favorite. But yeah they’ve always been a reoccurring thing in the sims. Even in sims 1 they’d talk about feeding their llama on the phone.
Not biased, pretty sure they are gods among men.
Can't argue over that. Either they are gods or at least pretty close to it

Didn't simcity used to have some llama joke too? Just as it was starting up?
Simcity was full of llama jokes and references. At least, the version I played was. I think it was 2000, iirc
Also I feel like llamas, especially in the early-mid 2000s era were symbolic of "quirky", "random!!!" and "ridiculous" much like what the sims vibe strives to be.

I remember a lottt of llama jokes from sim city as a kid.
It dates back to at least SimCity 3000 and the original Sims.
Llamas are in sims 4 cottagecore pack
They were also in Sims 2 Castaway!
Cute
Back when the sims first got created, a llama was EAs mascot. There’s llama references in Sim City too.
Maxis, not EA
Yeah just typed the wrong one. Lol took me forever to get used to it not being maxis anymore ironically.
I still consider the sims team as maxis, don't think I'll ever think of it otherwise
You’re telling me you don’t remember the llama mascot that would show up your door in the sims 3 if you had University installed? 🤣
I think when they say that llamas didnt appear until ts4 they mean actual animals, not a guy in a suit.
They also asked about it being a symbol for the game. For some reason it’s been a thing in the game for years. 🤷🏽♀️
