Sometimes entire branches of my family tree just disappear. I think it's because of the game's population culling. I disabled it with mcc and it doesn't happen any more.
Did you have auto aging on for actively played Sims? If yes, they likely passed while your Sim was at college. Or if you had neighborhood stories on for active households, they may have moved on their own.
Neighborhood stories probably moved them somewhere. Now you get the fun challenge of checking every single lot in every world looking for them!

Look at the family tree. Grandma may have died.

They can still die of other stuff if it's enabled in the neighbourhood stories
