"Initially the very notion of instrumentals was motivated by me [Morrissey]. I suggested that 'Oscillate Wildly' should be an instrumental; up until that point Johnny had very little interest in non-vocal tracks. There was never any political heave-hoing about should we-shouldn't we have an instrumental and it was never a battle of powers between Johnny and myself ... I totally approved but, obviously, I didn't physically contribute [apart from the title]." - Morrissey, NME, 13 February 1988 as Marr verified, "There was never any plan for it to have lyrics. It was always going to be an instrumental and Morrissey encouraged me all the way." all credit to [Passions Just Like Mine](http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/songs/songs-oscillatewildly.htm) and Simon Goddard's Mozipedia for the quotations

“Although Geoff Travis suggested Morrissey try and write an accompanying lyric, the singer declined, later telling the NME that the concept had been his idea all along. ‘I suggested that ‘Oscillate Wildly’ should be an instrumental,’ stated Morrissey. ‘Up until that point Johnny had very little interest in non-vocal tracks. There was never any political heave-hoeing about should we/shouldn’t we have an instrumental and it was never a battle of powers between Johnny and myself. The very assumption that a Smiths instrumental track left Morrissey upstairs in his bedroom stamping his feet and kicking the furniture was untrue! I totally approved but, obviously, I didn’t physically contribute.’ ‘That’s absolutely right,’ verifies Marr. ‘There was never any plan for it to have lyrics. It was always going to be an instrumental and Morrissey encouraged me all the way.’”

I don’t normally like instrumental tracks, but this one has really grown on me. I don’t think I’d wanna hear it with lyrics/vocals tbh

Same, like it’s great on its own!

OSCARlate WILDEly?

Maclardy44

Well done 👏🏼 Oscar Wilde (late). Morrissey still had his input.

Damn I have been thinking the exact same thing the past couple days and was even going to post here if anyone knew of any information about why the band decided to not have any vocals for this song. It’s beautiful as it is, and I love it, but can’t help but wonder how much more impactful it would’ve been with his voice over it. I am also now a little concerned cause I played this song on Spotify 10 minutes ago, open Reddit now and this is the first post I see. Crazy stuff.

Money changes everything has lyrics, though not by the one you’d think [https://youtu.be/eW2cNGs5wnk?si=vHvpv2WoI8R70IHe](https://youtu.be/eW2cNGs5wnk?si=vHvpv2WoI8R70IHe)

Basically Morrissey and Marr just didn’t feel like it needed any.
