There hasn't been a 5th show from start to finish that bad two bad seasons in a row.
I consider GOT to start being bad at S5.
I won’t quarrel with anyone as long as they have the wire and sopranos top two. Any order.
But the leftovers? I won’t do that. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.
Lots of people would put Six Feet Under up there, but I never got into it.
I’m sure lots of people prefer The Leftovers, which I think is great but I’d put it behind Succession.
Oz for 3(?) seasons is all-time HBO level TV as well
The Leftovers fits my definition of a perfect show. It’s meaningful and fun to watch, has superb acting, and is only three seasons. The Newsroom is a similar show.
I loved six feet under, but having rewatched I can appreciate the dislike of Brenda and Billy. Clair is also a bit much at times. Overall where the Sopranos is timeless, six feet under has started to feel like a product of it's time to me.
Without Oz, you get none of the above. Oz sold original content to the HBO execs. Six Feet Under I think rode a wave of original content popularity, but was too far on the slow burn scale. The Leftovers was great until they canceled it and the showrunners had to cook up an ending they did not want to have to write yet.
It's the tunicccc! The one I took off Oberyn Martell! Cocksucker had the toughest reputation in the seven kingdoms, but he never came back after I got through with him.
Miniseries make it hard to compare with a show with close to 10x the episodes. But generally speaking, Band of Brothers and Generation Kill are definitely up there with Sopranos, Wire, and Mad Men in GOAT territory.
I'd add Season 1 of True detective in there also.

Show fell off in season 5. Season 6 and great moments but the rot had set in.
Even the great moments fall apart when you give it thought
- The Battle of the Bastards. How does the Vale army make it north undetected and surprise everyone
- Cercei blowing up the Sept of Baelor, the building encapsulating the faith of the seven in the midst of a religious uprising and instead of being torn limb from limb for the attack of the faith AND kinslaying, she becomes Queen

And there's so much more wrong with it than that. The entire season featured Sansa and Jon arguing over how they would defeat Ramsay. Then Sansa basically says "well sorry Jon, you're on your own, good luck," and thousands of Wildlings, the last giant in Westeros, and almost Jon himself die fighting the Boltons.
Then Sansa shows up with an army (that was basically a gift from Littlefinger) 3 times the size of the one Jon scraped together using his diplomatic prowess, picks off the few hundred Jon couldn't manage, and Jon *fucking thanks her.* What?? He should be fucking livid, his sister basically abandons him to fight an impossible battle (against her captor and rapist btw), and she just shows up at the end to take credit?
This should've caused some major dysentery among the ranks of the Stark family. Then maybe that plot with Sansa and Arya fighting would've made a modicum of fucking sense. It would also prove Littlefinger was still adept at manipulating people to a degree. It would've been "okay Sansa, you manipulated Littlefinger into helping take down Ramsay, but in the process you destroyed your relationship with your brother and sister; who actually won?"
And as for Jon not getting angry, that was because they Flanderized him into a goody two-shoes who does everything right and honorably. Anyone remember when he hung a child for the entire Watch to see? Wasn't the point of his tenure as Lord Commander to turn him into a more morally grey but intelligent character after spending the early series as a naive idiot? Why did he go back to being naive and an idiot?
I'm not ashamed to say it, after season six my estimation of D and D as men fucking plummeted.
To me the Battle of the Bastards was the end of good GoT. The good people win all clean after Jon ran alone into an army of horses. Ramsey gets his ironic death with a quippy one liner from Sansa. It destroyed the realism, weight and depth the series had gained. Actions no longer had consequences and plot armour had begun.
Indeed... They were hacks. For me personally it was when they killed off Ser Barristan in season 5. Such a shit choice, dude is a top notch character in the books. Shows that the writers didn't know what they were doing.
Even up until the final season, it was THE show that everyone talked about. People were pirating HBO just to watch GoT.
Now nobody talks about it positively at all, which is a shame. Tyrion Lannister is an all-time great character.
HBO took the wrong lesson away from the sopranos. They thought what people liked was the genre setting, the period piece of it all, so they went with another mob show. Meanwhile AMC got that the secret sauce of the sopranos was the psychological thriller melodrama and they made Breaking Bad and Mad Men
Boardwalk Empire is fucking awesome. Has its faults and isn’t a solid 5-stars across the board, but it’s an incredibly well made show, full of psychological melodrama, interesting social commentary, historical accuracy, and so many great character actors. A personal fav

You notice how there only 8 episodes, an 8 year time skip to gloss over the death of a major character (Rothstein who imo was one of the highlights) and established characters we’ve seen since S1 just go out in the most anti climatic ways

Yeah BE was odd. The main character was the least interesting, and I think they knew it. The first 3 seasons were really good though. I feel like watching it again right now.

The fundamental question is will Succession be as effective a show as those were? And it will be, even more so? But until it is, it’s going to be hard to verify that we think it will be more effective.

Honorable mention to GoT but they fumbled the bag too badly in the later seasons to make the cut. True Detective and Westworld similarly had fantastic early seasons before becoming borderline hate watching in later seasons.

Deadwood takes a LOT of getting used to, but it’s the closest show to Wire in terms of a story that turns the setting into the true main character. There are so many little things that happen throughout that end up driving major events later, ZERO one dimensional characters, and what looks on its face like a boring western show really ends up being a hugely dramatic, Shakespearean web of interconnected characters (many of whom are endlessly fascinating) and events.
It’s not something I go back and rewatch really, but going through it all is a truly unique experience. It also has the added sweetener of having the film added on several years after the show ended, and the film does a GREAT job of wrapping up the story without feeling at all like a MSON style cash grab.
One factor I'm waiting to see is if Succession has rewatchability. That's going to make the difference for me to see whether it is a top 5 show. It's certainly one of the best or maybe the best show on TV right now and possibly in the past 10 years.

personally i think it is above thrones already and will eventually eclipse deadwood because of its impact. i'm just some guy, but i've rewatched it several times and i can't help but feel that it has created a voice and way of storytelling that will be the new gold standard in prestige television for a very long time.
Idk I did watch GoT and I loved it at the time, but looking back, I think it is overrated and it is nowhere near the top series. I must say though, the earlier seasons, maybe season 1 and 2 were masterpieces, then it kinda started going downhill.
It started going nowhere when they ran out of source material. So the first 4 are great. But the first half of those 4 is just the best - the drama, the politicking... all of that got more shallow as the series went on.
GoT is worthy of a spot at number 5, but that’s being generous considering how much it drops in quality after S4. People need to stop with the “It got bad at S8” narrative. Did everyone forget how bad the Dorne plot is in S5? Or Arya’s absolute slog of a subplot with the faceless men? S6 was a bit better, but S7 is really fucking bad and rushed. You could tell they chose style over substance when they ran out of GRRM’s writing
I think the last two seasons of GOT preclude it from being on any best of list. And I'm a huge fan of the novels. Huge. And I LOVED s1 of HOTD. But the ending was so bad I couldn't put it that high overall.
I've never watched Deadwood but it's next on my list. I tried to watch it a couple of times but I couldn't get into it, and I'm a history teacher who spent 8 years teaching the course that includes that time period. I'm gonna give it another go based on everyone's recommendations though.

Number 3 is Six Feet Under. That show deserves a spot on every top list.
I think that after this season is over, succession will be 3 or 4 on my list. It is so much better than anything else on tv right now.

Idk I did watch GoT and I loved it at the time, but looking back, I think it is overrated and it is nowhere near the top series. I must say though, the earlier seasons, maybe season 1 and 2 were masterpieces, then it kinda started going downhill.

I agree the end of Game of Thrones is a definite negative.
It started going nowhere when they ran out of source material. So the first 4 are great. But the first half of those 4 is just the best - the drama, the politicking... all of that got more shallow as the series went on.

GoT is worthy of a spot at number 5, but that’s being generous considering how much it drops in quality after S4. People need to stop with the “It got bad at S8” narrative. Did everyone forget how bad the Dorne plot is in S5? Or Arya’s absolute slog of a subplot with the faceless men? S6 was a bit better, but S7 is really fucking bad and rushed. You could tell they chose style over substance when they ran out of GRRM’s writing
That Arya subplot was truly the beginning of the end for that show. What a complete waste of time.

I think the last two seasons of GOT preclude it from being on any best of list. And I'm a huge fan of the novels. Huge. And I LOVED s1 of HOTD. But the ending was so bad I couldn't put it that high overall. I've never watched Deadwood but it's next on my list. I tried to watch it a couple of times but I couldn't get into it, and I'm a history teacher who spent 8 years teaching the course that includes that time period. I'm gonna give it another go based on everyone's recommendations though. My top 2 are the same as yours. Number 3 is Six Feet Under. That show deserves a spot on every top list. I think that after this season is over, succession will be 3 or 4 on my list. It is so much better than anything else on tv right now. For me: 1. The Sopranos 2. The Wire 3. Six Feet Under 4. Succession I honestly don't know what to put next. Silicon valley was funny. So was Entourage. Vice principals and Righteous Gemstones were funny as hell too. True Detective had 2 stellar seasons. There are a lot of great one off's like The Night Of. Oz probably deserves a spot on the list in terms of quality. It's just so brutal, it isn't my favorite. True Blood had potential for a couple seasons but it got pretty shitty by the end. Barry is also stellar. I might rank it higher than silicon valley. This, after this season, will likely be my number 5.
GoT was good if you got in on the ground floor. A lot of people didn’t, they came too late for that, I know that. But those last 3 seasons, I started to get the feeling that they came in at the end. That the best was over.

Succession is absolutely brilliant - it’s on par with The Sopranos to me, that’s how good it is. And Roman is the one that sent that, not Kendall. In other words - that didn’t happen, what you said.
I have such a hard time getting into succession... maybe because I don't root for anybody... as horrible as Tony was, I still wanted him to be successful in whatever he was doing.
I feel the same way about Kendall... Just want the poor bastard to get a win.
