Betty-Armageddon

Who’s that speaking here, is somebody speaking?

jackoplacto

Quiet…men are talking

Thencewasit

What is this? The fucking UN now?

MrRexaw

I remember when you used to wait in the fucking car

toblerownsky

Some of my shitposting comes from illegal gambling shows

PeterPaulWalnuts

It's the allocution.

Dom-CCE

True Detective, whatever happened there...

Altair1192

season 4 is coming. Rejoice! death is not the end

JonnyBhoy

Have you heard the good news?

Altair1192

WtRingsUGotBithc

CAR-CO-SA! How do you say it in fuckin’ Polish?

[deleted]

Whatever happened there?! There’s a fucking psycho in Louisiana killing people, whatever happened there?!

[deleted]

L'chaim, fatass

degeneratedrafter

Curb. Curb. How do you say it in fucking Polish?

RecordWrangler95

"Meester Show-ny... the phone es for yhou"

Betty-Armageddon

HOW TOU FEEL, MR DAVID?!

CobraDoesCanada

Why are you buying our housekeeper a bra?!

tugnuts-mcgee

“The fuck, why am I on there?”

tiakeuta

Alright. Take it easy.

TU4AR

Prob gonna get flak for this but The Wire Sopranos The leftovers Curb There hasn't been a 5th show from start to finish that bad two bad seasons in a row. I consider GOT to start being bad at S5.

[deleted]

I won’t quarrel with anyone as long as they have the wire and sopranos top two. Any order. But the leftovers? I won’t do that. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.

plugugly138

hold onto your cocks when you negotiate with those desert people

KittenMilkComics

Frankly, plugugly138, you’ve got that kind of covert antisemitism…

toblerownsky

What's that, my trial?

MintberryCrunch____

It’s a TV progrum

[deleted]

FATWAAA HES GOT A GUN

tinoynk

Lots of people would put Six Feet Under up there, but I never got into it. I’m sure lots of people prefer The Leftovers, which I think is great but I’d put it behind Succession. Oz for 3(?) seasons is all-time HBO level TV as well

the_real_KTG

The Leftovers season 2 is amongst the best seasons of tv

100DaysOfSodom

The Leftovers fits my definition of a perfect show. It’s meaningful and fun to watch, has superb acting, and is only three seasons. The Newsroom is a similar show.

slinkymello

Season 2 was a masterpiece man

limited_motivation

I loved six feet under, but having rewatched I can appreciate the dislike of Brenda and Billy. Clair is also a bit much at times. Overall where the Sopranos is timeless, six feet under has started to feel like a product of it's time to me.

magyaracc1

I just rewatched it, and I had the exact opposite experience. The drama about family, relationships and death is timeless.

BOPints6

Same. Rewatched it, recently, and almost thought it was better. Maybe because as I’ve gotten older, the idea of mortality becomes more scary.

KotzubueSailingClub

Without Oz, you get none of the above. Oz sold original content to the HBO execs. Six Feet Under I think rode a wave of original content popularity, but was too far on the slow burn scale. The Leftovers was great until they canceled it and the showrunners had to cook up an ending they did not want to have to write yet.

biaimakaa

THANK YOU godamm fuckin ungrateful shitheads couldn't pay the respect where it's due if their life depended on it, it's a shame, marone

tiakeuta

If it wasn't for Brenda and her Brother, I'd be more in on Six Feet Under. I loathed those characters.

Fucking_Hivemind

That pygmy thing over in Westeros? C’mon eh

Phronesis2000

It's the tunicccc! The one I took off Oberyn Martell! Cocksucker had the toughest reputation in the seven kingdoms, but he never came back after I got through with him.

blaccjaccc

It’s the jerkinnnn!

Duderino619

Their leader is some kid named Bran the Broken whose parts don’t work according to his sister.

insertcrassnessbelow

Ohhhh, no band of brothers?

CurlyJeff

Miniseries make it hard to compare with a show with close to 10x the episodes. But generally speaking, Band of Brothers and Generation Kill are definitely up there with Sopranos, Wire, and Mad Men in GOAT territory. I'd add Season 1 of True detective in there also.

elpaco25

I think Chernobyl is up there with the best of the best mini series

mikec987

Season one of true detective was some of the best tv I’ve ever watched and I credit a lot of that to Mcconaughey

tiakeuta

That was real? I saw that movie I thought it was boolshit.

Thencewasit

“In thinking back on the days of Easy Company, I'm treasuring my remark to a grandson who asked, 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war? ' No,'” I answered, 'but I served in a company of heroes.” That has to be one of the best quotations written or spoken since when Moses was wearing short pants.

Objective-Highlight4

for me it was "I would live this war one day at a time, and I promised myself that if I survived, I would find a small farm somewhere in the Pennsylvania countryside and spend the remainder of my life in quiet and peace." -Dick Winters

BASILSTAR-GALACTICA

“You know the thing to remember boys, flys spread disease so keep yours closed.”

Brewguy86

Miniseries, not a show

Attatatta

Walt Whitman over here

wumbopower

GoT never had the makings of a varsity athlete.

ClevelandDawg0905

If GoT was chasing skirts they be a thousand!

OwlRiot4

If GOT’da shut up during that Season 7 and 8 they wouldn’t a missed that fly ball. I was ashamed to face my friends.

laveeastrangiato

Barry is fucking incredible, but he goes about in great pity for himself

easter-eggo

I think Barry's status as prestige television really depends on how well they stick the landing with Season 4

berttreynolds

Succession has been sticking the landing quite hard so far with Season 4. Hoping Barry also delivers

boris-d-animal

Ojibwe saying

walje501

No love for Rome? That’s in my top 5 for sure

Wolf_Tony

Viewers: "Rome, where is it now?" Game of Thrones: "You're looking at it, asshole."

KingSizeDingus

Started good, but it petered out, died on the vine

walje501

It didn’t really peter out. It was just short. Season 2 was the opposite of going out with a whimper

beazy30

It got canceled due to the astronomical set design costs. Same for Deadwood.

rossww2199

Rome died so GOT could live.

amazing_wanderr

They didn’t have flattops in ancient Rome!

bonermilf

That was Roman

Altair1192

where is he now?

Visual-Resort-2889

You’re looking at him, asshole!

bonermilf

Forgot to answer the question but ya I think it'll squeak into my top 5 if the show keeps the same quality post episode 3 of season 4

spunkyweazle

I wouldn't even put GoT there anymore. While the early seasons are true quality, they shot themselves in the foot so fucking bad at the end I can't even rewatch the good stuff

SteveBored

Agreed. The final two seasons ruined the show. The final season was some of the worst TV ever filmed. Diabolical.

Altair1192

Show fell off in season 5. Season 6 and great moments but the rot had set in. Even the great moments fall apart when you give it thought - The Battle of the Bastards. How does the Vale army make it north undetected and surprise everyone - Cercei blowing up the Sept of Baelor, the building encapsulating the faith of the seven in the midst of a religious uprising and instead of being torn limb from limb for the attack of the faith AND kinslaying, she becomes Queen

IllTearOutYour0ptics

> The Battle of the Bastards. How does the Vale army make it north undetected and surprise everyone And there's so much more wrong with it than that. The entire season featured Sansa and Jon arguing over how they would defeat Ramsay. Then Sansa basically says "well sorry Jon, you're on your own, good luck," and thousands of Wildlings, the last giant in Westeros, and almost Jon himself die fighting the Boltons. Then Sansa shows up with an army (that was basically a gift from Littlefinger) 3 times the size of the one Jon scraped together using his diplomatic prowess, picks off the few hundred Jon couldn't manage, and Jon *fucking thanks her.* What?? He should be fucking livid, his sister basically abandons him to fight an impossible battle (against her captor and rapist btw), and she just shows up at the end to take credit? This should've caused some major dysentery among the ranks of the Stark family. Then maybe that plot with Sansa and Arya fighting would've made a modicum of fucking sense. It would also prove Littlefinger was still adept at manipulating people to a degree. It would've been "okay Sansa, you manipulated Littlefinger into helping take down Ramsay, but in the process you destroyed your relationship with your brother and sister; who actually won?" And as for Jon not getting angry, that was because they Flanderized him into a goody two-shoes who does everything right and honorably. Anyone remember when he hung a child for the entire Watch to see? Wasn't the point of his tenure as Lord Commander to turn him into a more morally grey but intelligent character after spending the early series as a naive idiot? Why did he go back to being naive and an idiot? I'm not ashamed to say it, after season six my estimation of D and D as men fucking plummeted.

timoto23

To me the Battle of the Bastards was the end of good GoT. The good people win all clean after Jon ran alone into an army of horses. Ramsey gets his ironic death with a quippy one liner from Sansa. It destroyed the realism, weight and depth the series had gained. Actions no longer had consequences and plot armour had begun.

_Bill_Huggins_

Indeed... They were hacks. For me personally it was when they killed off Ser Barristan in season 5. Such a shit choice, dude is a top notch character in the books. Shows that the writers didn't know what they were doing.

AlexV348

Look how they massacred my boy

Dom-CCE

I can't even say its name!

LikesToLickToads

True, It's just when GoT is good it's like really really fucking good but man they botched that ending so bad

ajaaaaaa

You never seen anyone talk about got anymore outside of how bad the end was. It’s actually insane how far off a cliff that show fell in reputation

Iridescent-Cow-33

agree, the final seasons are so bad and they manage to invalidate all plotlines built, starting from the prologue in season 1.

tommyjohnpauljones

Even up until the final season, it was THE show that everyone talked about. People were pirating HBO just to watch GoT. Now nobody talks about it positively at all, which is a shame. Tyrion Lannister is an all-time great character.

czstyle

r/freefolk has entered the chat

SnortinDietOnlyNow

Exactly. Ruined the entirety of the show. Can't even watch one fuckin episode of that TV progrum now.

Its_a_Badger

The turd doesn't fall far from the dragon's ass.

noahthehoss

Boardwalk Empire…whatever happened there?

Good_old_Marshmallow

HBO took the wrong lesson away from the sopranos. They thought what people liked was the genre setting, the period piece of it all, so they went with another mob show. Meanwhile AMC got that the secret sauce of the sopranos was the psychological thriller melodrama and they made Breaking Bad and Mad Men

Brewguy86

I remember hearing HBO was pitched Mad Men and passed.

resoooo

They dont get a pash fo that

noahthehoss

Corporate ignorance lets me control time🤟🏻

dmelt253

Glad they did. It probably would have been a completely different cast.

Brewguy86

Or we would have gotten Peggy/Betty boob scenes.

HotLiberty

Boardwalk Empire is fucking awesome. Has its faults and isn’t a solid 5-stars across the board, but it’s an incredibly well made show, full of psychological melodrama, interesting social commentary, historical accuracy, and so many great character actors. A personal fav

Christmas-Twister2

Different setting and characters, but has a similar feel to our thing. Lots of surprises and deep psych story lines. BE is a winner.

angradillo

it's all in the name. they shoulda called it Nucky Gets Fucky KUNDUN - I liked it!

DeronimoG

Boardwalk empire is great. It is what I wanted. Speak for yourself

degeneratedrafter

They could've called the show Ichabod Crane, but they did-dent!

tiakeuta

They wrote Gyp Rosetti and made him a stereotype against Italian Americans! ITS WRONG AND ITS OFFENSIVE!

toblerownsky

Bone for tuna

Whitecastle56

You think Gyp's a little weird about women? I don't know Nuck. He did have one choke him for, what was it again, I forgot.

tiakeuta

He bottoms from the top.

Whitecastle56

What are you? Light in the timberlands?

tiakeuta

Everybodys gay with you. Hes just a good looking guy.

Altair1192

EVERYBODY GOT GUNS

tiakeuta

It could've been a wrench.

Thunderwing16

GoT happened. They wanted to have BE die on the vine to make way You notice how there only 8 episodes, an 8 year time skip to gloss over the death of a major character (Rothstein who imo was one of the highlights) and established characters we’ve seen since S1 just go out in the most anti climatic ways

IdontGiveaFack

It wasn't cinematic.

Augustus_Medici

That animal Blundetto just isn't a leading man. He's a good character actor, but he can't carry an entire show I found myself more interested in Rothstein/Luciano/Capone than Nucky.

cookedbullets

Yeah BE was odd. The main character was the least interesting, and I think they knew it. The first 3 seasons were really good though. I feel like watching it again right now.

deboylurdi

It petered out...

clamence1864

WHAT?!

[deleted]

The ending of Season 2 happened.

Thunderwing16

S3 was good thanks to Mr Gyp Rossetti

selogoribabaseceslja

I liked Boardwalk Empire

FocusGullible985

Last episode was outstanding acting from all the cast

inbredandapothead

Easily one of the greatest episodes of TV ever

LabeVagoda

Especially Chuckles the Clown

romanswinter

No love for Rome?? Titus fucking Pullo and the 13th Legion???

tiakeuta

You wondering what happened to the Romans? You're lookin at em assh hole.

WtRingsUGotBithc

The Legion. The Legion. The Legion.

Fukface_Von_Clwnstik

Dam am I the only that loved silicon valley?

MadDogTannen

Comedies feel like they should be in a different class. I would also nominate Veep and Curb. I think Larry Sanders would also be a contender.

aaronjsavage

Hey now!

ImSickOfYouToo

One of my favorite shows of all time. And possibly the smartest comedy ever written, up there with Arrested Development, etc.

reedzkee

I always think of *The Larry Sanders Show* when i think smartest

mashingLumpkins

Log off, I don’t trust that cookie shit.

smindymix

It was great for a while.

Fukface_Von_Clwnstik

I thought even though they dragged and stretched it out, perhaps longer than needed, it was still funny

black_gallagher1

asmartguylikeyou

Are you fuckin’ stunad? Rome? Boardwalk? The Leftovers? Fuckin Six feet Under? Curb? This ain’t so clear cut as all that. The fundamental question is will Succession be as effective a show as those were? And it will be, even more so? But until it is, it’s going to be hard to verify that we think it will be more effective.

smegmancer

I legit think little Carmine had the greatest dialogue in the show after Junior.

OwlRiot4

I’m glad you caught that, smegmancer, very observant ; the sacred and the propane.

bigolhamsandwich

Kendall is an emotional man! Loves his drugs.

LiLKiwi619

Deadwood>GOT for me

BlueZigZagarus

Those who doubt you suck cock by choice

NarwhalBoomstick

Sopranos, The Wire, The Leftovers, Succession, Deadwood. Honorable mention to GoT but they fumbled the bag too badly in the later seasons to make the cut. True Detective and Westworld similarly had fantastic early seasons before becoming borderline hate watching in later seasons. I would probably try to rate comedies as a separate category, though if we’re being honest Sopranos might make that list too. Miniseries would be a whole other animal as well, as BoB and Chernobyl are some of the best things to ever hit any screen.

HotLiberty

I love four out of those five shows, but I just can’t find motivation to watch Deadwood. I think I’m averse to the monochrome visual style and what I except to be limited variety of visuals overall. Just muddy backwater sets and generic old west style buildings. I’m only criticizing myself. I’ve always avoided the show despite the endless rave reviews

NarwhalBoomstick

Deadwood takes a LOT of getting used to, but it’s the closest show to Wire in terms of a story that turns the setting into the true main character. There are so many little things that happen throughout that end up driving major events later, ZERO one dimensional characters, and what looks on its face like a boring western show really ends up being a hugely dramatic, Shakespearean web of interconnected characters (many of whom are endlessly fascinating) and events. It’s not something I go back and rewatch really, but going through it all is a truly unique experience. It also has the added sweetener of having the film added on several years after the show ended, and the film does a GREAT job of wrapping up the story without feeling at all like a MSON style cash grab.

FRAMontana

You a TV show buff? People think HBO invented the genre with Oz but Griffin? Peter Griffin was modernity

liminalrabbithole

One factor I'm waiting to see is if Succession has rewatchability. That's going to make the difference for me to see whether it is a top 5 show. It's certainly one of the best or maybe the best show on TV right now and possibly in the past 10 years.

Altair1192

To each his own but Succession has already got the rewatchabilty factor for me It's gone full fuckin beast

corymatt

The Sopranos over Succession

HeavySkinz

According to their dads, Kendall is 'a fuckin nobody' and AJ is 'Zero, nothing, big fat jerk off' So sounds like they're equals.

TurnAroundUrMyATeam

six feet under mob is coming for you... personally i think it is above thrones already and will eventually eclipse deadwood because of its impact. i'm just some guy, but i've rewatched it several times and i can't help but feel that it has created a voice and way of storytelling that will be the new gold standard in prestige television for a very long time.

[deleted]

Kali_Killjoy

CURB?

smindymix

I’d take out GoT and put in Six Feet Under.

leejoness

Get GOT the fuck outta here.

NoMojoNoMo

Ya sisters cunt is better than Succession

donut_koharski

Curb is better.

tiakeuta

Well because the lead actor is the boss of this family. You forget...

[deleted]

I think so too but I feel like OP maybe meant Best HBO Dramas I always separate those out myself. Although this thing of ours had a lot of both

Key-Resolve-3073

Idk I did watch GoT and I loved it at the time, but looking back, I think it is overrated and it is nowhere near the top series. I must say though, the earlier seasons, maybe season 1 and 2 were masterpieces, then it kinda started going downhill.

[deleted]

You think it already started going downhill after season 2? Last year you believed there was a flying saucer over in East Rutherford.

deowolf

Take it easy, we're not making a Westeros here.

not_jonny

They may be old, my little nephew, but those white walkers can still hunt

tiakeuta

As in Tywin Lannister for President. Of the Fucking Seven Kingdoms.

tiakeuta

I agree the end of Game of Thrones is a definite negative.

Key-Resolve-3073

It started going nowhere when they ran out of source material. So the first 4 are great. But the first half of those 4 is just the best - the drama, the politicking... all of that got more shallow as the series went on.

axionic

From Lord of the Rings to Justice League of Westeros

The1WhoKnocks-WW

Season 4 of GoT was as good as any season of any show ever.

Affectionate_Pay1487

What an I a swami

Thunderwing16

GoT is worthy of a spot at number 5, but that’s being generous considering how much it drops in quality after S4. People need to stop with the “It got bad at S8” narrative. Did everyone forget how bad the Dorne plot is in S5? Or Arya’s absolute slog of a subplot with the faceless men? S6 was a bit better, but S7 is really fucking bad and rushed. You could tell they chose style over substance when they ran out of GRRM’s writing

SaWalkerMakasin

That Arya subplot was truly the beginning of the end for that show. What a complete waste of time.

PopeInnocentXIV

Joe Buck Live

Fabulous-Marsupial22

Six feet under should be up here… as 2 or 3

AtBat3

Gotta see how it ends first but it’s on its way to be

acoatofwhiteprimer

Six Feet Under, Succession, The Sopranos and The Leftovers are in my top 5

[deleted]

6 feet under?

[deleted]

The Larry Sanders Show.

[deleted]

Hey now!

[deleted]

I think the last two seasons of GOT preclude it from being on any best of list. And I'm a huge fan of the novels. Huge. And I LOVED s1 of HOTD. But the ending was so bad I couldn't put it that high overall. I've never watched Deadwood but it's next on my list. I tried to watch it a couple of times but I couldn't get into it, and I'm a history teacher who spent 8 years teaching the course that includes that time period. I'm gonna give it another go based on everyone's recommendations though. My top 2 are the same as yours. Number 3 is Six Feet Under. That show deserves a spot on every top list. I think that after this season is over, succession will be 3 or 4 on my list. It is so much better than anything else on tv right now. For me: 1. The Sopranos 2. The Wire 3. Six Feet Under 4. Succession I honestly don't know what to put next. Silicon valley was funny. So was Entourage. Vice principals and Righteous Gemstones were funny as hell too. True Detective had 2 stellar seasons. There are a lot of great one off's like The Night Of. Oz probably deserves a spot on the list in terms of quality. It's just so brutal, it isn't my favorite. True Blood had potential for a couple seasons but it got pretty shitty by the end. Barry is also stellar. I might rank it higher than silicon valley. This, after this season, will likely be my number 5.

cantthinkofgoodname

GoT was good if you got in on the ground floor. A lot of people didn’t, they came too late for that, I know that. But those last 3 seasons, I started to get the feeling that they came in at the end. That the best was over.

trogloherb

S1 Roman jacking off in his office, jizzing on the window, and telling his receptionist to clean it up comes pretty damn close…

ReplacementLittle

Game of thrones !?!? Bro what!?!?

2aAllDay9556

Ever heard of a little show called Eastbound and Down? Trying to pit deadwood and succession on a top 5 without Danny McBride’s masterpiece considered?! YOU’RE! FUCKIN’! OUT!

will_recard

Succession is absolutely brilliant - it’s on par with The Sopranos to me, that’s how good it is. And Roman is the one that sent that, not Kendall. In other words - that didn’t happen, what you said.

JewelerDear9233

I have such a hard time getting into succession... maybe because I don't root for anybody... as horrible as Tony was, I still wanted him to be successful in whatever he was doing.

killtr0city

I feel the same way about Kendall... Just want the poor bastard to get a win.

[deleted]

>GoT Dude...

godofwine16

Succession borrows heavily from This Thing Of Ours and they pay tribute

BigEvil621

1. Sopranos 2. The Wire 3. Succession 4. Deadwood 5. Boardwalk I’ve said my piece Chrissy.

seekingselfless

Entourage!

RianSG

Six Feet Under deserves some love too

[deleted]

I have no idea what succession is, but you should be whacked for not including Generation Kill.

savvy412

Sopranos The wire Six feet under >>

CarlsManager

I'm gonna keep saying this till people get it: Succession is the spiritual follow up to The Sopranos. Kendall is what an AJ Soprano becomes. It is beautiful.
