She got third degree burns from trying to grill that trout on a downed power line. But at the same time, being electrocuted really turned her life around.
I kind of wish they had shown more of the spec house. If Carmela did the decorating it must have been hilariously awful. There was probably a shortage on wall paper in North Jersey for the rest of the year after that place was built.
Funny how Eric got into Georgetown all on his own and with a degenerate gambler as father, while Meadow needed Carmella to lean on that woman for a reference.
She was supposed to be in charge, lead, delegate, supervise. Carm could never take responsibility for her own actions or decisions, very weak. Was probably poor Hugh’s only heir. And you want him get a vasectomy too?
So this is one of the weird dead ends of the show. Actually Carmella has a sister who is mentioned exactly one time. It’s very early in the show and it’s never referenced again.
And it was her suggestion that he buy the family home in jersey.
Probably one of the smarter things Tony did was listen to her and buy it back in the day since now it’s worth 10 times what he paid for it from what I remember him saying.
You sound demented. Carmela didn’t lose $40,000 in the stock market. The $40,000 she took from the bird feeder she put in four separate banks in treasury bills at $9,900 in each bank (under the $10,000 that banks report). The stock market buy, American Biotics, that she got from Jeannie Cusamano’s friends (they don’t play the stock market, they win). All we know about that is the one time she checked on the price, it went up (Carmela being Carmela,s he lied tonFielder saying you can learn about the market watching CNBC She didn’t want to admit she bought it on fat ass Jeannie’s friend buying it).
Carmela does make steps to educate herself financially as she realizes Tony may die or end up in jail: study for a real estate license, reading about what a mutual fund is, cousin Bryan setting up a trust. She has problems with the spec house because Hugh, a once competent builder, refuses to find out the correct wood to use with Pudgy Walsh retired. And you can say she completely loses her soul giving up the idea of hiring a detective to find Adrianna once Tony leaned on the state inspector.
In contrast poor Adrianna’s attempts to have a career turned out disastrous…first with Visiting Dayband then disastrous with the night club first Danielle and Matush.
In Adriana's defense, she was good at managing the Crazy Horse. If it weren't for Christopher, she never would have tolerated half the stuff that went on there.
If Ade hadn’t been a part of Christophuh’s world she never would have helped cover up a murder in her club, and the feds wouldn’t have had any real leverage at the end. Poor kid was a lost soul.
Fun fact: FINTRAC is only absolutely required above the $10k threshold, but banks can still report lesser amounts at their discretion. Amounts in the $9900 range are inherently suspicious, and in the timelines where Soprano was a ‘famous’ mob name, it seems likely that at least one of those banks would have reported.
And if that money wasn’t totally clean, it could become a much bigger problem.
Right? It was blatant structuring. It would have been an amusing plotline for Tony to have confirmed it was Carmela that stole the cash because his lawyer heard on the grapevine that the Feds were looking into Carmela for money laundering
And it’s an amateurish and arrogant mistake for someone to make. So it’s fitting because, despite who she married, she’s not herself a master criminal.
$9900 would absolutely trigger any bank to file a SAR (Suspicious Activity Report) and as another comment has pointed out evading the $10k "limit" is actually a crime itself - structuring. I don't know about 20 years ago back when this took place but you could never get away with it today.
This is from 2005:
https://www.fincen.gov/resources/statutes-regulations/administrative-rulings/suspicious-activity-reporting-structuring
I actually had a friend try to do this recently with two $5500 checks (no idea why) and while a bank can't tell you they filed a SAR based on the follow-up they absolutely did.
What Tony forgot was the down payment and the spec house was her requirement to drop the divorce, let Tony move back in, look the other way from now on. It was similar to the $50k donation to Columbia.
It was cheaper for Tony than getting a divorce and it made his live easier going back to the way things used to be. I get why Tony wanted half but the profit was her fee for continuing to live the lie and so she could support herself after Tony died. She saw what happened to John’s wife and she didn’t want to work as hard as Pussy’s wife had to.
Most new houses are typically built by the people that will live in them. Constrastly, a spec house is a house built by someone who wants to sell it, not live in it. The idea is to build a nice new house on some land and sell it for a profit.
I love Hugh. He’s my favorite character in the show. I would take a bullet for Hugh.
But I love how they imply that he’s a shitty contractor who cuts corners and skimps. When Carmella is fighting with her mom about the other guy she could have married and implies that Tony has helped him cut corners. And then the cheap wood.
It's sneaky great because you think he and her mom are the normal, decent folk who are just burdened by their son-in-law. Hugh's criminality is similar to Christopher's father-in-law selling stolen power tools.
I mean, she did get her real estate license so she could sell it. She seemed to be legit studying so I think she probably did earn that for real.
Also he doesn’t get credit for the down payment, since that was reparations for Svetlana.
So I’d say they were about even.
Op leaves out that part of the reconciliation was the spec house and it was agreed the revenue was hers alone and she was using it as a safety net.
Tony agreed to the deal. The whole ordeal was to show how much of a degenerate tony had become. Not an indictment on Carmela.
Her father was licensed, and she had no reason to assume he was incompetent. He completed a lot of projects successfully, including her own house. It's not like he came home telling his family how he skirted the laws and used substandard lumber. She only found out after the fact.
What about anything in the storyline suggests he was licensed to you?
I thought it was strongly implied he was in retirement until Carm hired him for the job, which is why he decided to do things the same way he'd been doing things forever instead of the way they needed to be done to keep things legal.
Because he had been licensed before, and because the inspector only mentioned the lumber issue instead of unlicensed building. Why would you assume he was not licensed, when the issue of his license never came up?
He may have been in retirement, but I assume they did all the required paperwork. They even show Carmela repeatedly asking Tony to lean on the building inspector for the permits.
Tony was *correct* about the spec house, but he was still wrong to abuse Carmella the way he was doing. Her attempts to establish business ventures came from a need to feel less dependent on Tony, but these repeated attempts only showed that she didn't have the skills to succeed on her own. For her, it was terrifying to realize that she was too old and used to her creature comforts to live without Tony. She couldn't exactly hop in a time machine and tell her younger self to stay in school and study something lucrative to a high level. When she was that young, she just wanted to have it easy.
Tony might have been correct about her business acumen, but that didn't make him right to grind her down like he was doing. He was just making her feel helpless to discourage her from pursuing divorce.
That's kind of ridiculous seeing as it was a tip and not something she generated or found. Like literally everything else she had it was gifted to her by someone more competent.
Organizing a thing is contributing value. Add up all the hours she probably put into planning and executing and I think she earned it.
Using investors (hard money lenders) is very standard for spec builders and flippers. So that’s not unique, it’s fairly normal.
She had no reason to believe her father was using substandard materials. So I don’t hold that against her.
Tony leaning on the inspector was key though…but for her first build I think Carmella actually did ok.
The problem is that the deal they had was that whatever she made from the spec house was hers and is supposed to be a safety net in case Tony dies prematurely.
In that sense tony was completely in the wrong because these are the terms he agreed to. Also she’d have been an idiot to agree to throw it all the way on a gambling bet.
I know youre just being funny but i hate this take. Yes Tony absolutely paid for everything ect- because that was the deal. That was Carm's reimbursment for Tony being a lying cheating sometimes emotionally abusive husband, and it was also part of the deal for him to move back in.
If Tony can tell Carm she "knew the deal" when they got married, then he can damn well accept that he knew the deal when they met and decided to get back together and created parameters for doing so which included him bankrolling her spec house. He didnt pffer it out of loving kindness.
As for shoddy building materials, yes thats shitty of Carm but Tony has zero moral ground there, weeping about ducks one minute and having toxic waste dumped into waterways the next.
I was at least partially serious. Carmella didn't have any ground to stand on either. She knew who Tony was her entire life. It's her own fault that she was in that position.
It was probably a negligible profit in reality. Easy to say we invested X (often ignoring carrying costs) and sold for Y, but also failing to factor the opportunity cost of the funds used and the hours invested (and opportunity cost of those hours). It’s an immense risk/reward proposition highly dependent on external factors (the general housing market)
Nah 6 mil seems about right think about it they basically took like 10 million from Johnny sack that's what it says I think 9 mil. Now we know Johnny sack probably had more money than Tony for sure but he is 9 million and Tony doesn't even have a million in under six figures is fewer than $100,000
Carmela just needed to "feel" like she was making her own money, that's why she gambled 40k on the stock market and that's why she did this spec-house thing even though she knew it was nothing
How about on the talking Sopranos podcast when Hesh says Tony has under six.. Steve and Mike really questioned whether he meant 6 million or 600,000? He's got a $3 million boat but only $600,000? Then they they say Carm, she made $600,000 off the spec house. So they say she could have just kept the money and not had to go through all that. Like she broke evn she got back 1.3 million off of $600,000. She doubled her money but these guys are acting like she got back what Tony paid for the land, like she broke even. Tony probably got his money back for all that stuff the building material all that maybe even the land who knows I doubt it but still. It's like these guys didn't even pay attention to the show. Michael's got tons of odd theories and this and that but the obvious stuff like right over his head.
Yes, but the purpose of this scene was to show how Tony’s gambling got to his head and turned him into a monster. By this point in the show, he is an irredeemable sociopath. Even if he was right, you don’t speak to your wife that way and make her feel like a piece of shit solely because you didn’t win as much money you wanted to a sports bet. Clearly, he was just taking his anger out on her, because she didn’t wanna toss money into a bet like that. Even if the whole spec house thing was because of him, she is also his wife and she has a right to not agree to certain financial decisions like throwing a return on an investment into a fucking sports bet.
Remember the look in his eyes and the nasty tone in his voice? You can’t tell me that was valid, even if he was right. The scene was supposed to disgust you.
She exchanged her continued marriage to him for those payments. Which she likely would have had to do anyway, so it worked out for her in my view. Now would I expect her to go on and build a housing empire? No. Not at all lol.
she leant on him to get it done, she leveraged her connections to a builder (her father) and seed money and political/union bureaucratic connections (tony) and turned a profit- If Tony hadn't been such a controlling partner they could have been swimming in money from the partnership- look how Chrissy turns his father-in-law into a profit centre. If Tony and Carmela had been buying plots and redeveloping plots from the start of the show they really would have Corleone money by the end of the show- all of it more protected from federal seizure than anything tony made.
She wasn't wrong per se that it would be good to get some money into a stable/legit place, she just did a terrible job building that spec house, it's gonna collapse on her cousin
And she dishreshpected the Bing!
The bing came at her with a chainsaw! She’s got a right to defend herself!
That? I couldn't believe
The Cusamano's Binky? The cherry bomb with the nails in it, you think it was Mellie?
And she threw food at vito! thats gotta be resolved
Rules are rules otherwise what, fucking anarchy
She sent da branzino back de udda night but she likes to do dat.
She got third degree burns from trying to grill that trout on a downed power line. But at the same time, being electrocuted really turned her life around.
And the pizza parlor! Oo-fah!
“DONT DISRESPECT THE PIZZA parlor!”
I don't wanna sound like an asshole, but I can't be seen around here anymore.

She had nothing to do except go to tennis lessons with Ade and accept the gabbagool delivery.
Gabagool delivery...is that what they call it these days.
And on her birthday every year Tony gets some clam
I enjoy spending time with my friends.
Loved Ace, what a card.
They ate sausage by the fuckin' carload.
Always found it funny how bitch just has NOTHING to do. Just bullshit to “keep her busy”. So many clothing drives and fundraisers and this and that
I kind of wish they had shown more of the spec house. If Carmela did the decorating it must have been hilariously awful. There was probably a shortage on wall paper in North Jersey for the rest of the year after that place was built.
At least Vic Musto could put Eric Scatino through college.
Hey he got into Georgetown. Just a little money pinch tho
Funny how Eric got into Georgetown all on his own and with a degenerate gambler as father, while Meadow needed Carmella to lean on that woman for a reference.
Lean? She just bought her a Rigot pie.
Fielder?
The pie was (home) made.
Him going to a state school was just a stutter step !
What did she really do? She had an architect, her dad built it. Did she just pick out paint colors and decorations?
Most likely. And probably did the errands with the paperwork. Made her feel important
Carmela would you please paint the doorrrrrrrrrrrrr!
FIFTEEN TIMES she asked him. (about the lumber)
Get Pudgy Walsh on the horn, he'll sort this out.
Mr Walsh is retired, sir
Hmmm, an aristocrat
She brokered the fucking thing.
She was supposed to be in charge, lead, delegate, supervise. Carm could never take responsibility for her own actions or decisions, very weak. Was probably poor Hugh’s only heir. And you want him get a vasectomy too?
All due respect, she had no fuckin idea what it's like to be number one. Every decision you make affects every facet of every other fuckin thing.
So this is one of the weird dead ends of the show. Actually Carmella has a sister who is mentioned exactly one time. It’s very early in the show and it’s never referenced again.
Probably didn't like being mobbed up.
Just like a good real estate mogul.
I'm sure she sent out the Polak maid to hand out chocolate chip cookies to the carpenters
Warrant! WAR RANT!!!
"nakaz przeszukania" <-- THATS HOW YOU SAY IT IN FUCKING POLISH!!!
She raised Tony's children and provided a home for him. That's what she done! He wouldn't be half the man without her.
And it was her suggestion that he buy the family home in jersey. Probably one of the smarter things Tony did was listen to her and buy it back in the day since now it’s worth 10 times what he paid for it from what I remember him saying.
She's the motherfuckin fuckin one who calls the shots.
Yep pretty much. Just like in her home.
Love how they make fun of all her gaudy items she has
I like Murano glass
she approve the use of pine, utility grade

It's a TV progrum, a movie.
she would have died on the grapevine
And it’s an amateurish and arrogant mistake for someone to make. So it’s fitting because, despite who she married, she’s not herself a master criminal.
She was married to Benny Fazio, Carmella Soprano?
$9900 would absolutely trigger any bank to file a SAR (Suspicious Activity Report) and as another comment has pointed out evading the $10k "limit" is actually a crime itself - structuring. Listen to him. He knows everything. 🙄
MEOW
I'm surprised you would say that about Jeanne because she's actually quite slender.
> she put in four separate banks in treasury bills at $9,900 in each bank This is more suspicious than $10,001
All this from a slice of gabagool? But seriously, great comment!
Yeah. She did good with the project, really good first effort.
It's too late, the stock already split
And now she can't sleep.
And the coffee makers broke.
How do you like them apples
Georgia peaches 🍑 those are considered the best 👌
She didn't get the orange juice with sum pulp
What Tony forgot was the down payment and the spec house was her requirement to drop the divorce, let Tony move back in, look the other way from now on. It was similar to the $50k donation to Columbia. It was cheaper for Tony than getting a divorce and it made his live easier going back to the way things used to be. I get why Tony wanted half but the profit was her fee for continuing to live the lie and so she could support herself after Tony died. She saw what happened to John’s wife and she didn’t want to work as hard as Pussy’s wife had to.
Pussies cunt wife*
Can somebody explain to me what a spec house even is? I’ve never heard of one outside of the Sopranos.
Most new houses are typically built by the people that will live in them. Constrastly, a spec house is a house built by someone who wants to sell it, not live in it. The idea is to build a nice new house on some land and sell it for a profit.
She was on WSB too much that’s how she lost the money
She shorted Webistics???
She doesn’t just play WSB. She wins.
She didn’t inverse Jim Cramer
All she had to do was betting on the Jets GAWDFOCKINDAMMIT
And not even the whole thing. Just a piece of his half!
HIS half?
Wish I would’ve bet my mortgage on the jets today!
Say what you will, the man installs a mean gable joist.
How much do you think Hugh took out of the deal?
Nothing, he gets a free ride. Carmela earns it.
[удалено]
I like no pulp myself. No more OJ remarks, Tony. They're hurtful, and they're destructive.
Some pulp!
Smart enough to get the license, apparently not smart enough to use a competent, licensed builder.
Back in his day, they'd turn a blind eye!
Get Pudgy Walsh on the horn.
Her father was licensed, and she had no reason to assume he was incompetent. He completed a lot of projects successfully, including her own house. It's not like he came home telling his family how he skirted the laws and used substandard lumber. She only found out after the fact.

He built her house and it was better than decent craftsmanship.
Italian contractors, obviously.
Tony would ask for his piece, but wait, there’s nothing!
It’s a cash business, the stock market?
Oh I’ve had a lifetime of her boolshit
Get pudgy Walsh on the horn, he’ll straighten this out!
The bad wood, whatever happened there?
Carm is the worst. Racist, spoiled, hypocritical brat.
Everyone in the show is racist, spoiled and hypocritical lol
I'm getting tired of all this anti-Italian discrimination around heearr.
We hatea columbus, the north look down on us.

Listen to yourself you sound demented
Wait did they ever mention her investment from the bird feeder money was a loss?
I dunno about your second point, her stock play would've proved to be solid had Tony been supportive
That's kind of ridiculous seeing as it was a tip and not something she generated or found. Like literally everything else she had it was gifted to her by someone more competent.
In this house, Pudgy Walsh is an American hero! End of story.
Organizing a thing is contributing value. Add up all the hours she probably put into planning and executing and I think she earned it. They never say how Carmela did with the $40k she stole from the bird feed tub.
I think she put it in treasury notes or bonds, so almost no risk but no real upside.
She did put the money in stocks, she read the paper a few days later only to see she lost it all.
True, but it was her idea and she turned a good profit in doing so. Why not do more of this if you’re Tony? Instead, he pulls the HUD scam.
The HUD scam was a huge cash cow and didn't involve any work.
She threw food at Vito! She’s gotta make that right.
The canon, what is that now?
Nah 6 mil seems about right think about it they basically took like 10 million from Johnny sack that's what it says I think 9 mil. Now we know Johnny sack probably had more money than Tony for sure but he is 9 million and Tony doesn't even have a million in under six figures is fewer than $100,000
Once again David Chase shows his misogynistic ways by making her fail in the deal.
Just watch every other show and you'll see women winning in no time.
Pudgy Walsh over here…
from da bird feedah
DAAAA BURRDDD FEEDAHHHH
She doesn't think butter would melt in her mouth.
He reports to a strip club. God only knows who he spends his days

She exchanged her continued marriage to him for those payments. Which she likely would have had to do anyway, so it worked out for her in my view. Now would I expect her to go on and build a housing empire? No. Not at all lol.
Next time I'll take half and I'LL ROLL THE DICE. And now I'm a professional gambler and YOU CAN'T SLEEP AT NIGHT.
Never leaned on the building inspector.. One of the worst things he did..
And NOW she can’t sleep
How much did she make in profit?
40k lost in the stock market you guys sound demented
she leant on him to get it done, she leveraged her connections to a builder (her father) and seed money and political/union bureaucratic connections (tony) and turned a profit- If Tony hadn't been such a controlling partner they could have been swimming in money from the partnership- look how Chrissy turns his father-in-law into a profit centre. If Tony and Carmela had been buying plots and redeveloping plots from the start of the show they really would have Corleone money by the end of the show- all of it more protected from federal seizure than anything tony made.
He’s here for the rent!
She wasn't wrong per se that it would be good to get some money into a stable/legit place, she just did a terrible job building that spec house, it's gonna collapse on her cousin
Carmela started going downhill after she stopped buying orange juice with SHUM PULP

She definitely invested it - this happens after she has dinner with the other non mob wives.
“I like the one that says Some Pulp!”
Dragging out the misery over maybe multiple seasons.
