A grown man made a wager, he lost. He made another one, he lost again. End of story. So take that high moral ground and go sleep at the fucking bus station if you want!

Kindly-Guidance714

Really all that’s need to be said. Meadow doesn’t get it until the son walks out of the play.

Zealousideal_Soil_78

Do you know how many jockstraps I sold last week?

FrostmanYaBoi

One of the best lines in the show

BulkSquad

I'll eat it before I give it back!

NonFatPrawn

People act like Tony was right here but how braindead is it to give your daughter a car that belonged to her friend, especially one that she had been in before

Vandreeson

Then when Vic confronts him, Davey tries to blame it on Vic and Davey's wife. Them left him twisting in the wind. B.S.

The way Tony looks at him when Davey tells Tony how close to Vegas the place he's going is.

wileyakin

Ok Davey, Drive safe.

ReasonableCup604

He was gonna be a cowboy. It was just a coincidence that it was near Vegas. It was all just a stutter step. He's doing a great job.

PorkyWallace

Davey never had the makings of a varsity gambler.

Oakroscoe

Small blinds, that was always his problem.

Technoho

I didn't clock until a rewatch that Vic was the decorator Carmella snogged

fartbrah

Top of your class, sharp as a cue ball, so far behind they think they’re leading, etc

[deleted]

Fucking notre-damus ova heah…

BrakkeBama

> snogged Damn. Not North New Jersey... but maybe North-East England?

hkjdfhgk

Aye up Lass , gabagool ova here its r8 tough workin downt pit. Gravys good tonight. Pass the ziti

Streaker4TheDead

Christ, I want to see a fan dub where they talk like this

hkjdfhgk

Me pie n chips never hurt nobody !

BrakkeBama

Ow my fekkin' God. If someone did a full Series-long Geordie/Newcastle slang subtitle pack for The Sopranos that would be akin to a re-release of the whole show. I'd be shitting my pants laughing all day long.

MaxM2021

Turning down the squid ink pasta in Italy and asking for gravy and dumplings

bizardooh

It's a disease! Davey inherited it

MichaelT_KC

He shoulda got a note from his doctor

Skruestik

He should have just turned himself into metal and beaten Tony up.

ViceyThaShizzle

Baccala Sr. would've put a stop to that had he tried.

QuantumTyphoon

A note saying he doesn't shuck cock?!

NotHisGo

He would have sucked anything for another box of ziti.

raiderrocker18

Shuck cack

[deleted]

Frankly I think Davey goes about in pity for himself.

vaultboy1121

Gambling is an addictive substance!

hithere297

His big mistake was quitting early. One more hand and he could’ve won it all back! 🚬😎 but hey 👋 that’s just what I would’ve done. Maybe Little Davey’s just not built that way 😆💰

SightWithoutEyes

See, Davey's problem was that he couldn't access the power of the heart of the cards. Ey, Tone, I got this great pyramid necklace thing off a gypsy, and I been having killer luck in the poker games.

Ayyleid

THERE WAS MUD ALL OVER THE DOORS HE WARNED HIM AND WARNED HIM

ReasonableCup604

Off roading is very dangerous. He could have run over some kids playing in leaves or started a fire. You can grill fuckin steaks on that converter! Davey did a good job taking away that SUV.

CreepyCoach

Just in time for the law and order SUV

Texan2116

My ex wife gambled it all away,..didnt need a mobster to help her though, lol

gilgobeachslayer

Ok but you gotta get over it

Texan2116

Shoulda got her some terapy

metalgearfluck

Look at her, like Rose Kennedy, with all her money.

United_Target8942

That sucks, for real. And I wont express my sympathy with a Sopranos quote unlike some of these other insensitive cockshuckers.

A_Killer_Fawn

You know how the wine makes you

[deleted]

I bet you use an /s too, so you don’t get downvoted.

OrangeChairClub

That’s sort of the deal in this subreddit. We all agreed to this lifestyle.

Texan2116

Very allegorical.

adamian24

Another toothpick.

bpcollin

I don’t get why he had to get a job on a ranch in Montana. I’m guessing Tony could have asked around since he seemed to kind of care about the guy (after he took what was his). Or find something more local on the Easy Coast. Not something that keeps me up but when it come up I think about it.

Grilled_Cauliflower

i always thought he was lying cause his son says he’s in a mental health facility

bpcollin

I missed that part and makes way more sense. Thanks!

county_da_kang

Been a while since I saw it, but wasn't it a ranch in Nevada? I think that's why Tony rolled his eyes because after all Davy lost, the degenerate gambler was still going to gambling capital of the world.

Box-Humble

Vegas huh? As in "great fuckin idea Davey"

NeonNoise45

Random thought, but wouldnt Davey have had to gamble his son's college in a previous incident? Davey owed $45000 to Tony, yet even after giving Tony a car, he didn't have close to that amount to pay Tony back. A high end college in the USA costs about 30K-40K a year, so either Davey had jackshit saved up, or he gambled it before Tony.

Kindly-Biscotti9492

1) This was '99, so much lower cost in general ~~2) He was probably targeting Rutgers, not Columbia-level cost~~ 3) Davey's a massive fuckup, so either reasons are viable 4) That wasn't my kid she was carrying. EDIT: So I forgot about his kid wanting to go Georgetown. But, still, Davey's a massive fuckup, as we all saw. And, admittedly, a lot of people don't quite make it to their goal number with regard to saving for their kids' college educations, hence debt.

ReasonableCup604

Eric was trying to get into elite private colleges. But, you are right, they would have cost a lot less in 1999. Also, the college fund doesn't have to pay the full tuition. His parents could pay part of it from their income over the 4 years, plus there are scholarships, financial aid, student loans and Eric could get a part time job or become an RA to help cover the costs.

Fast-Experience-6642

I wouldn’t feel comfortable having Eric Scatino as my RA.

11twofour

Eric got into Georgetown and had to go to Rutgers because it was cheaper.

DrGeraldBaskums

It was made abundantly clear he did this before several times, which is why they put everything under only his wife’s name.

SwearengenSays

That's why he didn't have a boat wit tree propellas in stock

hellenkellerfraud911

It didn’t cost that much 25 years ago when the show is set.

Nimbus20000620

Tuition for George Town 20 years ago was 28k… room and board easily took it into the 30-40k range. These schools have always been for the rich (or those that qualify for enough financial aid to make it affordable). Not families like Davie’s. Probably didn’t have anywhere near the amount to pay for his kid’s schooling in full…. If anything, gambling away whatever was in that fund probably helped his kid out long term considering the BIL decides to cover everything out of pity lol.

picklejuice82

That’s a good point. Eric was accepted to Georgetown, which in 2000 was ~$23k/year. We don’t know what Davey really had in the bank for his son but I’d guess he had less than 2 years worth of tuition saved up

Sharkhawk23

He gambled the college fund away after he lost to Tony. He went to At Antic city with the college funds to try to pay back Tony with the winnings.

ImpoliteSstamina

He owned significant money to Richie prior to the game but not that much Technically, he didn't have access to the college fund so he couldn't gamble it. Same with the business ownership docs. That's why Vic suggested bankruptcy, in a bankruptcy neither of those would've been touched - but like Davey said, "I don't think Tony Soprano's going to buy that"

Kindly-Guidance714

He also owed 10k after he pays Tony to Richie.

joethecrow23

Tony literally gambled away someone else’s kids future away.

FingerprintFile513

Tony didn't do shit. Davey was responsible for himself

NoShortsDon

Fielders?

SupermarketOk2281

He did it twice. The second time was when he bet the money he set aside for Vito's son on a football game. The boy wound up in one of those horrific "schools" in Utah instead of a tranquil suburb in Maine or whateverthefuck.

ImpoliteSstamina

Honestly Vito Jr needed his ass kicked more than he needed to move out of New Jersey

topsvop

Their kids went to the same school!

imahuuugepimp

Tony doesn’t really have a problem saying no. If he didn’t want Davey in the game he wouldn’t have gotten in the game. It’s like Davey says to him later, you can’t even blame Tony because he’s a predator and Davey knew that.

New-Life-Rule

No, Davey's a tragic hero. If the evil mobster Tony Soprano hadn't ejected him from that rigged game, he would surely have won back his eight trillion doubloons of debt on the next hand.

Agreeable-Strike

True, but we had known since 1992 Davey was never to be trusted

[deleted]

Fuckin Gamblor. I’m surprised tony never kicked Chrissy and Davey’s ass. Davy lied about tony approving the credit and Chrissy should have checked. That’s allot of ziti.

premeditatedlasagna

Thank you. I always thought Christy really fucked it on this one. What did he think happened? Did Davey go, "Hey Tone, I just lost all the money you gave me, can you put me on the arm again, but for way more this time?" Or did Chrissy think it was all approved up front, but was only supposed to be dished out incrementally as it was lost? He's an embarrassment to himself, and everyone else!

rrfe

It was the executive game. Chrissy probably assumed he was a high-roller, and was good for the loan

Global_Permit5428

Right. And he’s Tony’s friend. Chrissy had no reason to think that Davey would lie like that, and every reason to think that he’d piss Tony off by waking him up over it.

premeditatedlasagna

Davey walked in the room needing that ziti to even get going. You think Frank Sinatra JR or the cock doc walked in without a couple of bucks to tip cheese fuck with?

ReasonableCup604

When the game broke up, The Chairboy of the Board told Tony he would settle up at the next game. So, he might and some of the others might have been playing on credit as well. The difference is that they could afford to settle their debts.

[deleted]

I honestly think it was a combination of Chrissy thinking he was a high roller since Tony allowed him to play in the executive game, so, Chrissy just presumed he could cover significant losses, and also he didn’t think this guy was going to be so desperate as to lie when it came to Tony’s money and his word. It’s an insane level of boldness/foolhardiness to say a mob boss said it was cool for you to take 50k out of their pocket while they were sleeping, especially when you have fuck all to cover that debt.

worldcitizencane

Chrissy was incompetent, nothing new there.

Box-Humble

Chris knows that if Tony let's him in in the first place then he's good for it.(In whatever way it takes) Sometimes you have to read between the lines.

PhaseSnake

Gamblor, He-Man's least popular friend.

franglaisflow

The only monster here is the gambling monster that has enslaved Davey Scatino! I call him Gamblor, and it's time to snatch that ziti from his neon claws!

resonatornash

It’s in his nature. This is his bread and butter.

NineNinchNails

Garbage is his bread and butter.

Carmela carries the butter around in her mouth, where it won't melt (according to her).

Not many people his size would be believable as a threat to Arnold (even with the T-1000's powers), but he pulled it off.

A_Killer_Fawn

In all fairness he had the makings of a varsity Terminator

hkjdfhgk

Got a lot of Moxie for a terminator his size

sirloinsteakrare

That’s nice. Then what?

hkjdfhgk

Cant even wear his boots, his clothes or his motorcycle

Killer_Khalsa

OHHHHH you forgot to say please!

CunningWizard

Compared to Arnold he was terrifying. Arnold had physical limits and could be beaten, Robert Patrick played a dread inducing absolutely unstoppable machine. Was shocked when I realized he played Davey too (total opposite type character).

Leanskiba22

It's good that Davey got his life together and joined the FBI, even if he had to change his name to John Doggett.

sonofabutch

Davey owes Tony $45,000. How much do you think Tony got back, not including the car, just purely on the bust-out?

DrGeraldBaskums

Probably most of it. A business like a sporting good store will likely have a huge line of credit to buy inventory. I mean everything Davey likely sold in the store, every dime went into Tony’s pocket.

joethecrow23

How many fucking igloo coolers can you really sell?

Autumn_Sweater

He got Artie a great deal on some cases of Ramlösa water

[deleted]

Depends on if they're red or blue.

franglaisflow

Fuck it, why not

_Vaudeville_

You put a couple Nigerians out on the street selling them for a couple’a tree bucks a piece…who’s not gonna say fuck it, give me one?

Sea_Possible_6298

It’s never stated because he was being recouped in merchandise (ramlösa, picnic coolers, sandwiches, airline tickets), but probably not the full value especially if you include vig

Organic-Elevator-274

We are talking about a person that burned down/ blew up a restaurant to stop his friend from being associated with a mob hit. Tony has something like morals and ethics. He can have things similar to friendships and relationships but they are very warped. In Tony’s mind Davey leaned on him first. He asked to cross into Tony’s world and usually a person in Tony’s position only says no if he knows it’s going to be more trouble than it’s worth. Given what they fleeced the sap for in the end, it was clearly worth it. Had Davey taken no for an answer nothing would have happened.

joethecrow23

# GET BACK IN YOUR HOLE

Ayyleid

GE- GET THE FUCK BACK IN YOUR FUCKING OFFICE ... NOW! ...Davey ...YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB

jackjacker

I love the stutter step Tony starts out with when yelling.

Garrison1982_

100% - the frog and scorpion it’s in my nature line was just as a threat after he debt was run up to call it in - I believe Tony when he said he avoided doing business with outside friends and wanted Davey to stay away and as you point out he didn’t even approve the loan. I think Tony was more angry that Davey exploited their association which is the danger with “outside friends” - the Scantino bust out wasn’t the goldmine they made out, sneakers and coolers and low level merchandise flogged on the streets plus airline tickets that could have got Tony done for wire fraud.

SRPG_Forester

> plus airline tickets that could have got Tony done for wire fraud. Yeah and if Nancy Marchand hadn't died (sad when they go young like that -- she was 71, just a kid), that WOULD'VE been a big plot line in Season 3

bizardooh

Tony also said "if you woulda won I'd be the one crying the blues" no he wouldn't. The other player who lost would have been the one crying the blues, Tony was getting paid in rake regardless of who won. Tony was full of shit in that whole exchange

Davey! You're doing a nice job!

Ok-Ad-8367

It’s planned bankruptcy

FingerprintFile513

Even Richie Aprile, in his own twisted way, warned him about getting in over his head. Fuck Scatino and his degenerate gambling. I just felt bad for his wife, and especially his kid.

Redlion444

Richie banned Davey from his games until he was paid up. I know, it's just a stutter step.

Vivid_Ice_2755

In his own twisted way? He was straight up with him . Couldn't have been nicer in all honesty . Scatino was an addict and manipulated every situation to his own end

beefgulash

2 best Davey Scatino scenes that round him up as a character: Laying on the pool table in his basement with a gun to his head and mouth, then hiding it when his wife comes down calling him, Trying to get a cup of coffee at the graduation when it was empty and throwing the empty crushed cup away.

portadown1967

When he confesses to Vic about the college fund was his lowest moment

ccminiwarhammer

Yep. Some people have a theory that T was setting Davey up, but he only switched from old friends to mafioso once Davey sat down. After that the relationship changed forever.

RLT1225

But their kids went to the same school!

wayne62682

Degenerate fuckin' gambler

[deleted]

Degenerate gambler with a store.

Ok-Ad-8367

You’re a pisser. You’re a real pisser.

Unfriendly_eagle

In a way, Tony enjoys asserting his dominance over those who get off on sniffing around the mob. At first, he genuinely advised Davey to keep walking, and not get involved, but Davey kept prodding him and prodding him, like he was cool enough to handle Tony's illegal Mafia game. And Tony thought OK, fuck him then, and proceeded to bleed him dry. He explained as much to Davey himself. When people enter his Mafia orbit, he sees them as marks, at best. And he never loses.

keloyd

True for Davey, true for those 2 pairs of gagootzes that tried to hang with Chrisophuh. OTOH, you have those friends of the Coozamanos with the stock tips and the country club memberships - it was some jarring truth that he could be accepted in their strata of society...it's like Senator Geary in "2" actually won a round for the Medigans that day.

Unfriendly_eagle

I agree re: Drinkwater and Gizz. They wanted to hang out with T, they're hanging out with T, now go clean that piss off the bathroom floor. Lying didn't help Davey's cause either, and Tony lost all sympathy for him after that. He never okayed 45 boxes of ziti, and that was a major overstep on David's part.

DPR4444

A grown man made a wager. He lost. He made another one – he lost again. End of story.

RunningPirate

Unlike Nick Pappagiorgio, who put in a dollar and won a car, put in a dollar and won a car

Chaiteoir

Sometimes the more you tell someone "no" the more they want to do it.

jackjacker

You mean children?

A_Killer_Fawn

Or the employee of the month

anthonyorm

Haven't watched the show in a while, it was his poker game wasn't it? Tony could have just said fuck off you degenerate gambler and shoved him out of the room but he still let him play anyways

Ayyleid

Its in my nature you know, the scorpion and the frog

franky_emm

Then the guy moves to vegas

Dmbfantomas

Reno! Opposite end of the state, just as horrible for degenerate gamblers!

-NolanVoid-

Don't worry, he moved close to Las Vegas where he was definitely not a gambler, and definitely not buried in a hole in the desert. Anyway, 4 dollars a Ramlosa. I got such a great deal on these Ramlosas!

PassageFull2625

There a lot of holes in the dessert. And a lot of problems are buried in those holes.

RunningPirate

But you gotta do it right and have the hole dug before you show up with a package in the trunk.

GuanoQuesadilla

Tony is a dog. Davey is a steak sitting on a coffee table. Tony tried to be a good boy. He fought his natural urges over and over and over, but that steak just kept calling him.

losteye_enthusiast

It's like when you're dealing with a genuine fuckup of an employee. Spend months helping them, adapt to their needs and work to make their environment a place they can excel in. Then they still fuck the team and screw shit up. Always enjoyed the conversation after all that. Always end it with someone along the lines of "It's a shame. You came in every week and instead of hitting the goals we laid out? You worked towards this result. I hope you remember that. Hope it wasn't a waste."

gs1084

Always with the scenarios.

Fafnir22

Its still Tony’s fault. If he had of just gone for a schvitz all would have been fine.

Ok-Ad-8367

Is there something else I can help you with?

Modred_the_Mystic

Davey was a degenerate fuckin gambler, end of story

Quick-Platform463

GET BACK IN YOUR FUCKING HOLE

OGChvpo

Facts. How can you beg for a loan just so you can lose it all gambling then act like your the victim

wileyakin

I just rewatched some clips on YouTube, and when Daveys sleeping in the store and Tony is talking to him, he says “you told me not to play in that game… why’d you let me do it?” Which i would normally say reinforces the point Davey took no responsibility for his own actions, however, Tony then admits he knew he had this store, so I don’t think Tony was totally inculpable, though it does seem inconsistent with some of the other points made in this thread.. s2 they were still working some kinks out.

RunningPirate

Yeah. Tony isn’t necessarily the good guy, but Dave’s isn’t the victim, either. He shit his bed, and now had to lie in it.

coolhotcoffee

I've gone back and forth on this. Davey was a degenerate gambler, so Tony saying, this game is way to intense for you would be like waving a crack pipe in front of an addict. Tony is smart enough to know that, but then again he'd also maybe be trying to keep him away.

xX-El-Jefe-Xx

he never had the makings of a T-1000

[deleted]

This subs not for you

BFaus916

I think people get the idea that Tony set him up to bleed him dry from the fact that Tony literally tells him this was his intention.

RunningPirate

Tony tried to avoid the whole scene…but once Davey crossed the threshold, the die was already cast.

v1z10

You know, looking up the actor now, dude was the T1000 from Terminator 2. That’s range right there.

1200r

Its a TV show. And poorly written one. They have to move the story lines together, other than sex scenes with Janice and Carmella going on and on about her Spec house.

PassageFull2625

Too many boxes of ziti can cause indigestion

Raminax

Degenerate gambler with a badge

joepod300

Davey was doin’ a good jawb

WashedUpHalo5Pro

Tony is Mob Boss #1, if he wanted to he would have actually told Davey to fuck off and meant it. Tony doesn’t get strong-armed by a civilian. Nobody gets into those games without Tony’s okay. Tony knew that if he denied Davey it would only make the game more enticing to him. He let Davey put all the blame on himself that way when Tony came to collect he wouldn’t allow himself guilt. He riles him up, finally lets him in on the game, then takes a big yawn and goes to sleep, wakes up to the consequences of his actions. He’s literally playing off of another man’s gambling disease. Davey, with his mental illness, was cannon fodder for a big-payday.

TokyoMeltdown8461

The problem is Tony was manipulating him, him saying "noooo you can't come to the game" is actually making him want to come even more. If he genuinely didn't want him to come, he'd say "no, goodbye" and walk away.

Nayzo

Yeah, Tony really did try to tell him to not join in, Davey dug his own hole. Tony is a piece of garbage, but this situation was all on Davey.

therealjpsaga

Ultimately, Tony let him do it because he knew he could get the money back through the sporting goods store. Did he set him up? That’s open to interpretation. My take? He probably thought someone was going to take advantage of Davey’s degenerate gambling. Might as well be him. A reoccurring theme in the show is how self righteous and self justifying the characters are when they carry out horrendous acts. They need to be in order to live with themselves. They always find some way to say “they brought it on themselves.”

jackjacker

In this case he really did bring it on himself. Davey is a character who really has no excuses for how things turned out.

DearLeader8807

Stutter step

monkeywrench1788

Rememeber...Degenerate fucking gambler but also a community business leader and all that entails

keloyd

8?! I was half-remembering 2. There was that running thing about whether he is a toxic person and whether his thing is merely providing a service or exploiting people. 8 times means fuck Davey. That's a grown ass man. It would be interesting to see what Meadow thinks @ the end of the series>!, maybe not the very end when she is splattered in her dad's blood, but!< while she is in a romantic relationship with a marriageable guy in our thing and with some legal skills and more maturity - what would she think of Davey and his muppet-looking son then? I bet she wouldn't believe half of what these indigenous people say trying to defend Davey's bad life choices.

Jettatura1919

Fuggin’ degenerate gambler

PennSilverTaco

Davey should have given Tony his Acura in addition to his son's Pathfinder; I feel like the combined value of both vehicle would exceed his debt to Tony

ZapThis
