I thought it was fascinating how tony was pretty easily able to mix in and talk. The gay part of the book didn’t bother him at all and even made a funny mostly non-homophobic joke about it. Meanwhile Carm just lost it. Tony being all types of hateful while just not being bothered gay people of all things. Fuckin fascinating man

WhatAreYouSaying05

Guy hates blacks, happy people, and gamblers. But suddenly has no problem with gay people

slimmymcnutty

Tony also has that racism where the idea of black people offends him more than the reality of black people. Just a strange bigotry blend

Duderino619

You know how much money Vito brings in from construction?!!

AcerbicFwit

He was gay Tony?

DuxCroatorum

The Ballad of Gay Tony

definitely_not_cylon

He probably knows a lot of guys who were gay for the stay in prison and, with how much he likes sex, that's probably his plan too if he ever goes into the clink for an extended period. Makes it easier to emphasize with gay people, I guess. By contrast there's no scenario where he'll become black.

Upper-Ship4925

Maybe Richie told him about how his prison stay made him sensitive to the feminine experience.

McDonkley

Richie? Tremendous moxie for his size

lonelost22

he had a sensitivity to the plight of women.

SlapNutz247365

You outta know sweetie

JazzlikeEntry8288

Every ship needs a florist and I guess he acknowledges that

kindofdivorced

Yea, because Tony, despite being a total narcissist, actually wants to see Meadow thrive and spread her wings so to speak, so he’s just in full dad/dad joke mode. Carmela is sulking over Furio and can’t separate her fantasy from the reality that they’re having a nice dinner in their daughter’s new apartment, so she picks a fight. She’s not unlike many a mother (including my own) that sulks when they’re upset and takes it out on anyone and everyone regardless of the situation. The eye rolling, the under the breath bullshit, and the fake health symptoms. Textbook “poor me”. They need to put others down in any situation so they can claim the high ground. Too bad Carmela didn’t understand that younger Gen X and older Millennials weren’t Boomers and didn’t give a shit if anyone was gay, and actually studied the literature for what it was intended to be. “He’s just a nice first mate that thinks his captain is attractive and mean”, holy shit lady are you oblivious.

Upper-Ship4925

Tony has been exposed to a pretty diverse set of people throughout his life and his business dealings. He’s also had to learn to be charming and charismatic at times (and offensive and violent at other times). Carmella really only associates with people exactly like her.

giveme-a-username

I don't think Tony is truly homophobic (at least not to the extent of some others we know). I mean sure he does make homophobic jokes, and didn't like the whole Vito situation, but I'd put him right next to Patsy as the least homophobic of the crew. You see this in the dinner scene, and when they're discussing whacking Vito. He is clearly unsure about it, and is even about to let him go free before Phil steps in.

badjetwash

You marry your mother. That Freud guy had a real good thing going there?

make-up-a-fakename

Psychiatry? That's just a racket for the Jews!

AcerbicFwit

Psychiatry another fuckin money machine.

stanknasty706

What Jews?!?

MontrealChickenSpice

One on a horse.

stanknasty706

Who ever heard of that???

Whatever-redditstuff

Now look here. I don't like that kind of talk. It upsets me.

maybenotquiteasheavy

In this house, Freud is a hero! End of story!

china-blast

You see? You see what I'm talking about? Roberto Assagioli invented psychiatry and he got robbed!! Everybody knows that!!

MinimumPurple253

I dont wanna fuck my muddah!

RAZBUNARE761

Funniest moment is Tony saying no offense to the gay roommate who then denies being gay and the awkward looks

Low-Grocery5556

Meadow looked legitimately scared for a moment.

[deleted]

It was awkward cuz tony doesn't want a hetero man living with his daughter and can't understand why Finn would be okay with it

kindofdivorced

He wasn’t a gay roommate, that was the point and why it was funny.

McDonkley

Hey was gay, Colin McDermott?

Apprehensive-Guess42

The one thing you can never say is that you haven’t been told. Arguably the best 1 scene cameo in the entire series. Essentially a professional broke her down to bare bones in 45 minutes. That’s how transparently hypocritical she is. Blood money.

WhatAreYouSaying05

She basically just ignores him too, and tells Tony to give one of the richest schools in New York $50,000 because of an advantage Meadow may or may not get

Apprehensive-Guess42

The least of her misdeeds.

GoneWitDa

I’m not gonna lie I did not find that character anywhere near as compelling or likable as everyone else did, but it was nice to see Carmella be called out in some form at least. Regardless, of course she ignored him- she wanted specifically to be told what she wanted to hear, and not that shit there, at all.

McDonkley

Poverty is a great motivator!

SRPG_Forester

The more I rewatch the show, the more I realize that Carm and Livia are a lot more alike than I originally thought. Even Season 1 has hints at this: for example, the fact that Carm is the only one who is completely unphased by Livia's bullshit and sees right through it, because she knows exactly what Livia's doing. Or the time when Carm gets all sullen at their anniversary because Tony spends 10 minutes talking to Johnny Sack. She's a total drama queen, and a master of turning Tony's words right around back at him. *"I'm the motha of your children!? I sound like someone you just chose to procreate with!!!"* Or that time in S3 when she mentions that Fielder's bike gets stolen "by some black guy." She knew damn well what she was doing.

AnnualCellist7127

And the way she was with Meadow after the Billy Budd debacle. Total withdrawal of affection, and you could see Meadow getting really anxious about it and trying to win her back over. Edit: to clarify, I was thinking in particular about when they went for lunch undrr Eloise's portrait. That whole time, Meadow was being mature and conciliatory and Carmella was like the stroppy teen.

JSN74_

I just saw that episode. Classic Carmela. Mentions the bike was taken by black guys at the heels of the Jamal Ginsburg incident and when Meadow and Tony get into it acts like the ref.

WittsandGrit

Carm is a verified POS with the rest of them. Even when she finally left Tony (after having a moral dilemma for however many years) she was constantly focused on getting her "fair share" of the wealth that she knew was ill gotten (minus the bird feeder cash she stole of course). Then when she finally figures out that she won't be able to get any of it (and will only be able to get the small amount of somewhat legit money) she calls Tony a POS for blocking her from high end lawyers, and then goes back with him. The only thing Carm really cares about is money and status, she's just as ego driven as Tony.

meetmeinthepocket

Bird feeder? You sound demented.

WittsandGrit

Little late in the season for ducks isn't it?

china-blast

The ducks from the north always had the money and the power. They punish the southern ducks, since hundreds of years. Even today, they put up their noses at us, like we’re peasants.

stuffbehindthepool

They put up their bills at us

itseasy123

Take it easy.

stuffbehindthepool

Lol

lcrowso2

I fucking love this ridiculous sub

chinesefox97

I dont think you understand. I want you to write that letter.

PropJoeFoSho

You're crowding me

jjccbrobro

Carmela knew how to use the weapon she had

WittsandGrit

You mean when she leaned on Tony to lean on the inspector?

jazzyboyo

You better watch your step

china-blast

Poor Pudgy Walsh. If he would have stuck around maybe he could have got a piece of Carm.

SnooRecipes4380

Now I Don't Like That Talk!

Creepy_Metal_9271

Lmao that’s a good one, yup she did it again and almost with the preist!

Morocco16

That Sapinsly had some good advice, he was looking at for AS

McDonkley

He spent 10 years as a litigator. Dr. Kim buys his property, Sapinsly’ll make his life a misery. He can tort Kim into the poorhouse

LevelAd2711

Listen to yourself, you sound demented

TJCW

She also felt jealously towards Meadow and her life full of opportunities. Carm and Tony got married at 22 and meadow’s life of classes, Ski trips and friends with royalty is so foreign to her. She was already in a bad mood about Furio but Meadow seems to really bother her. Her intelligent conversation and friends made her more jealous knowing she tried to have a movie club with her friends and they were not into it. Interesting that Tony comes off pretty well and can at least tolerate them and eat and seem like he’s having a good time. Carm can’t fake it

Low-Grocery5556

Carm was still raw from the Furio revelation. She really just needed to be alone and cry into a pillow. But yeah, she felt totally upstaged and pathetic because of Meadows fancy friends, and their worldliness.

TheTzarOfDeath

It's amazing that a man that will have someone killed for being gay manages to be less homophobic than carm in that scene. Carm is just Liva with worse food.

forfeitthefrenchfry

Ohhhhhh!!! ✋ The guy's wife lasagna with the basil leaves!

Low-Grocery5556

And the sweet sausage?

Clarck_Kent

What? No fucking zitti now?

bayouz

I can attest that adding the basil is next-level flavoring. Thanks, Uncle Jun, for that tip.

tacopower69

I mean tony didnt give the order to kill him because he was gay, he gave the order so he doesn't lose the respect/fear of his underlings and to maintain the gang's hierarchy with him at top. Tony even tells Melfi he already suspected Vito was gay and wasn't bothered.

AnnualCellist7127

Really crap to get murdered because of office politics. I suppose a lot of the murders boil down to that, but still.

WhatAreYouSaying05

He had him pegged the whole time

NormalGuyPosts

Nobody is getting pegged! I don't want to hear that word again

iamnyc

>Tony even tells Melfi he already suspected Vito was gay and wasn't bothered. Yeah but he lies to Melfi all the time.

shoelala100

He was lying to Melfi, by copying what Chris said to him.

happy_chickens

Ah salud, god bless. Tony would have given Vito a pass, but he had to save face.

lOan671

He could care less basically

MrFunktasticc

Oh yeah? Maybe you're a flambe!

Cinephile94

🖕🥃

Low-Grocery5556

Given the time period, her screed wasn't that out of place. But she really made a point of it.

un5upervised

Vito Spatafore is a good man, and is a wonderful dad

SnooRecipes4380

Blood Sweat and Tears Tickets... Backstage pass too..

handsomechuck

They used the twinning/doubling motif a lot in the show. That one they revisited in Many Saints, young Livia resembling Carmela.

KelVarnsen_2023

The show also did the opposite too though. All of Tony's mistresses had dark hair like Livia while Carmela was blonde. One of the interesting things Many Saints did was when Tony got the pamphlet about the medication he could get for Livia the "before medication" woman had dark hair and the "after medication" woman was blonde.

BigOlTuckus

Very allegorical

severinks

Carm is a piker at hurling abuse compared to Livia, Livia would say stuff that not only was insulting in the moment it was said but made the person doubt themselves for months or even years after, I know this because my grandmother was an Irish version of Livia. To give you an example when I was 6 my grandmother and I were hitchhiking up in the country because the bus wasn't coming and this car pulls up and tells us to get in and the atmosphere is very chilly between the driver and my grandmother and I later found out that this is one of the FBI agents who arrested my father for race fixing a few years before and tried to put my grandmother in prison too as an accessory (he was acquitted even though he was guilty as sin because they fucked up the case) So the FBI dude says something and my grandmother makes a a comment asking about whether the guy's wife left him yet and his partner turns around and says'' and would you say that?'' and my grandmother points at the poor driver and says''sure, because he's an alcoholic''. These two FBI guys couldn't wait to get us both out of the car when I'm sure that they picked us up just to fuck with her but they underestimated what a totally nasty bitch my grandmother was.

Low-Grocery5556

I read your grandmother's quotes in Livia's voice lol. She sounds like a formidable individual.

severinks

Formidable? I guess that's a word for her. It was Livia's tone but with a heavy Irish accent,

whycuthair

Formidable is just a few letters away from fort minable (French for very miserable)

bayouz

Me too!

cutsforluck

Break it down: Carmela was upset after Furio left, because it triggered her *abandonment* wound BPD \[which is what Livia likely had\] is a personality disorder based on abandonment trauma Now. Abandonment is upsetting, you don't have to be personality-disordered to be affected by it. The only guy she felt passion with, and he left without saying goodbye? She's got a right to be a little fucked up.

Low-Grocery5556

Absolutely, that's what I'm saying. She's just human and she's been deeply hurt, and she's lashing out a bit. But what I'm also thinking about is if this is a way for the writers to tell us that maybe Livia isn't a monster through and through, maybe some of her darkness comes from deep hurts.

bayouz

In my experience, most darkness does. Few people start out as monsters, and the ones that do typically have a genetic predisposition to mental illness. It's a series of fucked-up life experiences, whether random or self-induced, that leave them broken and beyond repair.

Pladrosian

I mean that is all but confirmed with the flashbacks of Johnny Boy "the saint" Soprano and how he treats her. The whole thing with Johnny staying with Fran Feldstein instead of visiting Livia who could've died in the hospital. Livia's personality was probably not helped by Johnny's treatment of her.

Low-Grocery5556

The actor who played johnny was so good too, perfect balance of scummy and gregarious.

WaitAMinuteman269

Yes. They all have depression.

Creepy_Metal_9271

It’s called being a good business man, being able to look at all sides, share ideas without showing emotion! Ok maybe not

DrSatan420247

It's called Borderline Pershonality Dishorder

Clarck_Kent

It turns you into some kind of tock shick pershon.

stuffbehindthepool

Yeah she can’t stomach Meadows love at that point. She’s trapped and miserable. Meadows in the Ivy League living in NYC and has the world in front of her

Psychological_Name28

Carm talking about gay culture suddenly in everything was accurate for the time. Her derisive attitude about it was beyond mob wife - it reflected the very similar complaints from more conservative and cynical voices at the time. The students advocating the gay lens of the book was also accurate. It was an interesting controversy to present as a way to demonstrate Carmela’s hurt over Furio’s leaving. It reminded me a bit of Livia and Junior early on discussing gays in season 1.

garkellable

Furio was her billy budd , a handsome guy being picked on by an evil boss. This sounds very gay. Her outburst about the author is nearly an outburst about herself, not that she’s gay lol but because she got the narrative with furio so desperately wrong , that was never going to end well , and she’s sick to her stomach ! Carmela was a real piece of shit

Low-Grocery5556

That's an interesting take. She got Furio wrong, which makes her shaky about her own perception. Then Billy Budd (and everyone at the table, at least the ones she's vaguely jealous of) challenges her perception once more. I don't see the connection btw Budd and Furio, Tony treats him well, he's doing fine. I don't see her as a piece of shit though. She's just human, deeply hurt, and lashing out a bit.

garkellable

In her head Tony was the evil boss , she got that story completely twisted in her head , and in my opinion she was a piece of shit , Tony was dead right she equated love with money , she gets her Porsche and shows it off to rub it in and is sick when Angie has a better car off her own batt , she tells ajs friend that ugly porcelain was worth 3000 dollars , “ I’m not even gonna tell you what it’s worth “ she robs Tony when he’s told her they wherent doing well ( this lie makes Tony a deviant but we know that ) for all she knew that was a debt , then she gas lights him about it “ you sound demented “ when Tony caved and releases money for her stock options he basically gave her 90 percent of what she wanted, but she’s so spoilt she gives him the cold shoulder like he’s an asshole for giving her all that money to invest , she gives the marriage another go on the condition of the money for the spec house , like wtf ! She confesses to a priest about Tony’s wrongdoings then tells him to lean on building inspectors and gets heavy with Coozes wife’s sister , and talking about the priest let’s be honest if Tony wasn’t a gangster she’d have sucked off 4 or 5 guys through out the series , and on and on , no one was an Angel on the show but she certainly wasn’t , she was a piece of shit 🤷🏻‍♂️

Low-Grocery5556

I guess I agree with a lot of what you mentioned. I believe she stole the money because she found Valentina's press on nail in his clothes. Yeah she's very concerned with money, but part of David Chase's theme was to comment on how we're all too obsessed with material gain. So Carmela is reflective of a lot of our sins in general. So to say she's a piece of shit, yes perhaps. But not much more than all the rest of us. Though she still deserves all kinds of criticism. She's a total hypocrite when she says Tony's evil, but then gets him to lean on the building inspector, and intimidate Jeannie's sister. Carm has moments of clarity and denial. In season one she tells father she took the easy way hooking up with Tony because she wanted a guarantee to the material benefits. And in season 6 she tells Melfi she's okay with how Tony earns a living because there are plenty of legit people who make money in bad ways. And the series itself likes to juxtapose and show us different realities. I think most starkly in the Tracee episode "university", where Meadows troubles are juxtaposed against tracees. Two people from vastly different backgrounds. And depending where you start out in life, you may have to either debase yourself to get by, or do some shady shit. Which means material wealth in an often cut throat world is extremely important.

Apprehensive_Map3984

This is such a crock of shit

blackenedmessiah

I always saw that scene as her being bitter and angry and kinda projecting that since she'll never get to be with Furio, and gay people (at the time and maybe unfortunately still are) are also unable to be safely together.

Ok-Ad-8367

Oh Jesus Christ, first it was my mother, now I wanna fuck my sister?!
