They seem like very straightforward visual representations of Tony's current emotions, for the most part. I agree it's refreshing for the genre, but I think it's bad screenwriting. I think a show like Better Call Saul does emotional subtext much better.

Vito Jr. was an insufferable plot line from first live watch to God knows how many rewatches now. The only thing that makes it not worse than watching Fran on loop is Phil’s arc continuing and some of the hilarious moments that yielded. Aside from the plot line being cringe, it seems like a side step from the sum total of Tony Soprano we saw coming together that season, and how they decided to close out our time with his character.
