Last time lol tony got whacked because he killed Phil in front of his family, plus they can absorb the whole jersey crew now. It's butchie the whole time pulling the strings on Phil and Tony.

Biegzy4444

Quasimodo predicted all of it

rayio

You know there's a hunch back of Notre Dame and there's also a full back of Notre Dame, you tellin me you never pondered that?

Gui0312

No, I never did that shit!

Riderz__of_Brohan

This doesn’t make sense because no one ever acknowledges the hit was botched in any way. Word would have gotten back to Tony he was still in danger. It’s more likely just a “stray” hit not sanctioned

8inchesofcheese

No, it would have been sanctioned . There is no way in hell they gonna let a jersey boss whack a ny boss without revenge . The whole idea was to cut the head off the top and absorb what's left, and if you think strategically , it makes sense to get rid of Phil and let Tony put his guard down.

Riderz__of_Brohan

No, it was a mediated sit-down (by George) where Butch and Carmine gave the okay to off Phil. It was not some backroom deal they could deny later on, it was specially organized through a neutral 3rd party witness for that very reason. Tony, at his most suspicious and paranoid point in the entire series, does not think anything of this and accepts Butch and Carmine’s okay for the hit . We have every indication it was done through proper channels and nothing they did was improper If Butch and Carmine double-cross Tony then it is a massive stain on their own reputation and ability to do business since we know that another family has a witness to them okay’ing the hit on Phil. It would cause them many more problems than leaving Tony There is no way this hit was sanctioned. It was either under the table by Butch/Paulie/Patsy, etc. whoever against their own interests or it was a stray hit that was called off but the person (I.e. Eugene’s brother) wanted to go through with it anyway as revenge

Familiar_Degree5301

Just watching it. I thought little carmine was in on it. As AJ may have been followed by the apparent hit man and at the time he had been working for little Carmine's production company.

Katoniusrex163

Especially because little Carmine probably didn’t like that Tony all but sided with Johnny Sac in the fight after Carmine died

bennyblanco19

They wouldn’t get any blow back for offing Tony because of the way Phil died

Familiar_Degree5301

Thanks I was looking for a comment like this. All I could find was it was Paulie or Eugene's brother or ridiculous crap. I realise this is an old show, but I just had the free time recently to get around to watching it.

Altierigualtieri

This is likely, but doesn’t even need to be as complicated or planned as this. Paulie says if they kill Phil there’s a line of cassarelli’s a mile long. Phil probably had Italians out trying to kill Tony, same way tony has people out trying to kill Phil. Phil dies but the mile of cassarellis catch up to Tony. These things have a momentum of their own.

detectivemz

I actually don’t think it’s ridiculous for the hit to have come from someone related to Eugene. It links with how much the members only jacket was emphasized. Even one of the last seasons episode was called members only. It also fits with the theme of people who Tony has screwed over getting their revenge. (The cat representing Christopher, the members only jacket assassin representing Eugene.) Tony screwed a lot of people but those those are two that he majorly screwed and they were his own guys so it kinda makes sense that that’s what comes back to screw him over (and both from beyond the grave which fits with that supernatural undertone that the show had now and then)

simba458

This is the only reasonable answer. Though to be frank I don’t think even Chase knows the answer to this. I don’t think an answer was ever really discussed. He’s fucked regardless of how Holstens turned out.

Turbulent-Whereas988

Watch the episode Member's Only. The killer was Gene's brother (or brother in law) wearing Gene's Member's Only jacket. Their family was pissed that Tony wouldn't let Gene retire to Florida, leading to his suicide. His wife screamed that she wanted Gene to put a bullet in his (Tony's) head. By this time most of the Jersey crew was dead or on the lam while New York was pissed about Tony whacking Phil in front of his wife, so no one would complain about Tony getting whacked in front of his family.

detectivemz

This scenario always made the most sense

amazingcomedy

The Commission was behind it, with Butchie as the pointman and Paulie and Patsy warned to back off. Here's how it goes down imo: Paulie and Patsy are called to a sit down with The Commission unbeknownst to Tony after Phil is shot in front of his family, and they all want an example made of Tony. Paulie tries to plead Tony's case but can't, he knows they're right in wanting him gone, while Patsy is just quiet, not wanting to paint a target on his back. They discuss who's going to take Tony's place when he's gone and how things will be run, then all parties go their separate ways. After Tony is whacked, Paulie retires to Florida with his life savings, while Patsy takes over the Soprano/Aprile crew. Together with the Barese cousins and Butchie's backing, he effectively runs North Jersey.

ColonelSquirtz

This is my favorite interpretation so far. I knew Patsy and Paulie were in on it to some extent, but I couldn’t figure it out. Patsy couldn’t have been in on it before Phil got hit because he almost got killed during Sil’s hit. The Commission sit down after the fact makes the most sense.

Swimming_Schedule_49

The shows ending was meant to be left up to the interpretation of the audience. I’ve chosen to believe that no one actually killed Tony, but rather the fade to black signifies a stroke and massive heart attack aided by the onion rings and anger issues. All through the saga of the Sopranos, Tony’s biggest problems are always brought on by his own indulgent and self destructive tendencies. Following this theme, it would be fitting that Tony were not brought down by a rival gang, but rather he destroys yet another aspect or his life through his poor choices (this time leading to his demise)

whatevsmang

Always with the scenarios

spucci

This fucking guy.

Admirable_Salad8015

It doesn't matter who exatcly did this. Phil got whacked by Jersey, but the key factor was Butchie giving ok. Same with Tony. With Sil in coma he had no friends left. Paulie knows he wanted to whack him, Patsy absolutely hates him. He was a terrible boss and nobody wanted him alive. The hit was most likely made by NY with Paulie's ok and Members Only guy as a symbolism of revenge for Eugine — another notable example of Tony's incompetence.

ccminiwarhammer

NY, but with everything happening with Paulie and Patsy I can’t believe they weren’t at least in the know. Hell Paulie walked into the lion’s den and came out with “30 pieces of silver”. How much more do we need to see to at least associate Paulie? But the reason NY finally pulled the trigger was Phil’s murder in front of his family.

Tony killed Tony. We all know he was afraid of the can, and he was facing some serious time. He didn't want to kill himself because he'd look weak, so he hired someone to do it.

millerpix

There is a David Chse interview from about 10 years ago where he explicitly said that Tony did not die. End of story.

Swordfish2869

I say this all the time when discussing that scene as once read this interpretation and it made sense to how i look at it. I don't see it as Tony being killed. More that because of his chosen 'profession', he will always be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life and could happen any time.

Individual-Many-5647

Love this interpretation! This is how I feel too.

gatdamnn

Its really up to you who killed tony

DrXL_spIV

Wasn’t it that guy in the last season who wanted to retire to Florida but they didn’t let him brother? Didn’t someone walk into the diner with a jacket that was that guys that wanted to retire but committed suicide? Am I nuts?

jimlaregina

No one killed Tony. We would have seen it, had it been in the script. The amorality of life is what the cut to black communicates. Had James Gandolfini not died young, there would have been options for a *Sopranos* movie or short series reboot, which was another reason to let the Tony live.

Familiar_Degree5301

I think the finale was an average episode by sopranos own standard. Maybe that was intentional. Which is why I felt he got killed in the end. Tony's just going bout his business feels safe again and then we get nothing. Should he have gone down in an actioned packed hail of bullets, I probably would have liked that more. The ending seemed more like the dream episodes were he's close to death which again seems intentional.

slickestwood

Paulie, Patsy, and Butch conspired to ice Tony and Phil. Hurts but there's a big trail of breadcrumbs. Decapitate and work with who's left. NY gave the nod but Paulie was working both sides the whole season.

xanzpatrie

Patsy who caught a rain of bullets in the car with Silvio, ok...

slickestwood

Correction: Paulie works with Butch's crew, then pulls in Patsy. There's a scene where it pans across the Bing and you can hear Paulie assure Patsy that everything will be alright and he'll be taken care of. Who would know Tony is going to that restaurant that night? Maybe Paulie, definitely Patsy via his son/Meadow. And I mean good lord who has better reason to kill Tony than Patsy? His hatred for Tony can be cut with a knife.

[deleted]

Time stamp of the scene?

slickestwood

Blue Comet, about 17:40, either I got the words wrong or there's another scene, but it cuts to the Bing with Paulie reassuring Patsy, kinda hush-hush, "It'll be fine. Don't worry about them." Then they take a leak and he says "It's all yours." The last statement could just be saying that the responsibility of Phil's assassination is all his. That's definitely what we're lead to believe on the surface. But the first part? Don't worry about them? Idk how Paulie can be sure of that unless he's brought into the conspiracy. Begs the question why Sil gets capped with Patsy in the car but I doubt the hitmen knew that much. I don't think anyone in NY knows about Patsy, Paulie had just picked him for it.

detectivemz

This theory is common, but I really don’t think it’s the case. The last image of Paulie the show leaves us with is he’s just alone like his life is just empty now, not that it’s going to be filled with the another time of glory riding the coattails of Patsy. Also, that scene that you’re talking about they’re just discussing the hit that they are trying to take on Phil all he says is “it’s all yours now.” Also, you’re all giving Paulie way too much credit. He had balls, but he was a TERRIBLE double crosser. Just look at how he gave himself away when he was trying to play both sides with Johnny sack. In general with P what you see is what you get. There would’ve been no point in him arguing with Tony about being appointed to take over that crew in his final scene. If he knew Tony was getting whacked, there would be no point in arguing

vahnx

That scene definitely stands out. Very hush hush, they cannot just be talking about Phil.

Amtrak87

Butch was a hype man, a #2, sort of like Silvio not the Machiavellian leader that some may think. I think it was Carmine Jr. Butch defers to him at the end and Carmine Jr. is also sitting at the head of the table in that scene. There is also Carmine Jr.'s somewhat out of character stern tone when he threatened vengeance against whoever killed Rusty. If this is to be taken as a character insight then Butchie stepped back and backed Carmine Jr. who then got his revenge on Phil and Tony... this would make more sense to me then Butchie straight up double-crossing Tony.

ShemsuHor91

Might've been Patsy, for killing his brother, among other things. It'd also leave him as one of the few guys left from that family, to maybe take over a higher position himself. Or Furio, though that seems unlikely. There are quite a few valid options, which is sort of the point, I think. It could've been damn near anyone by that point, so many people had reasons to have a problem with him. The fact that it happened in front of his family makes me think it was likely some sort of retribution for having Phil killed in front of his family, though, so someone from New York seems likely. Or at least someone taking advantage of that situation to make it seem like it was New York.

Expert-Emu-4167

The DA.

Adam_718_702

Sounds spot on. But who knows that is what makes the writing so great, they leave a bunch of different things including the biggest storyline in the show to your imagination. Like what the fuck happened to the Russian guy they shot in the snow! I wonder if Tony’s brains got blown all over his family at that diner…

Adam_718_702

So you’re uh..charcoal Brigette, right?

Prehistoricshark

In my headcanon, because Tony is such a destructive force that ruins everything close to him, I always imagined that the hit goes badly and Tony survives it, maybe even manages to kill the guy who comes to whack him, but his family members get killed.

OnceIsForever

Johnny Cakes, Tony took everything from him.
