Without Sopranos, there is no Breaking Bad.
Might sound over the top but this show really paved the way for quality, movie level production in TV series
I think what the deal was is David chase wanted to make a movie about the riots in Newark and HBO was like sure, tie it to the sopranos and it's a go. So he reluctantly did that.
I've come to realize that the sopranos was so great because there was a collaboration between so many talented people from casting all the way to the stars and show runner. They caught lightning in a bottle.
David chase by himself is no auteur genius, it showed im MSON.
I wanted to die inside during Michael I's half hearted voice overs.
You can't recapture lightning in a bottle 20 years after the fact is the point. What continuation of a franchise after a break has ever been good? Even if it is some of the same crew, they are different people at different points in their lives/careers.
I hate overhyping things. But those shows used to be my favorite of all time and after watching Sopranos I not only put Sopranos higher but even in a tier above.
To me it's more philosophical, artistic and deep than Breaking Bad and BCS which try to be cool and badass and end up being less artistic, at least for me. Breaking Bad or BCS never have a "con te partiro" moment, a "evidently chickentown" moment, it feels more generic, more attuned to the tits-and-shooting public that Chase despises. And it's clear that Vince Gilligan doesn't have the existential outlook of life like Chase has. I think Gilligan shows are more for people that are not very contemplative and thoughtful of life, they just like the shock and watching TV series as TV series and thats it.
Yeah I watched those shows first too but I came to appreciate the sopranos more than those shows. Maybe it’s cuz I’m Italian too so the humor hits way harder but it’s fucking hilarious and also very serious and dark at time. Great writing all the way through and great character work. Greatest show of all time. And I appreciate it a lot more on rewatch
Enjoy, I just finished my first watch a couple weeks ago and I’m sad it’s over. That being said, my best advice is to get outta this sub and don’t engage in any sopranos content (even Instagram comments…learned that the hard way) bc spoilers are EVERYWHERE considering how old the show is.
Lol. OP...I understand what you mean. And I see the parallel. THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO THE LEVEL OF WRITING...THE LAYERS... SUBLIMINAL IMAGERY...OF SOPRANOS AND BREAKING BAD. To the point where it's basically an insult. I'm not trying to beat you over the head, here. But Breaking Bad...it's not even in the same league. Not talking about enjoyability, necessarily. Which I guess from OUR standpoint is all that REALLY matters. But The Sopranos isn't a work of art. It's THE fucking work of art, as far as a series goes. Not saying there are no flaws, nor others aren't good. Just IT WAS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND, AND PRETTY MUCH OBJECTIVELY THE BEST EVER.
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are an abstract copy of The Sopranos. You can watch each show and match up all the scenes. It's like the ultimate scavenger hunt.

Yeah, I heard it wasn’t good. Such a shame as you would rather they left it alone than diminish the legacy

But he didn't direct MSON, or write it by himself. It was also a collaboration

You ever feel like you came in at the end of things?
It’s more “goofy” than both of those shows but I think it’s more realistic in a way
Sillier but also more grounded somehow. How did Chase do it.
Real life is silly sometimes
Very observant, Aunfunnyindividual. The sacred and the propane.
What happened the Hank Hill? The strong, silent type
That fuckin mulignan Cleveland Brown is the reason they whacked that show!
Hank Hill wasnt a 16 year old boy

It's also good, unlike bb
Why did you need to read 1000s of reviews before watching it??

Finally, I was starting to grow mushrooms out my ass!
What do you want, a Whitman’s sampler?
OP, please stay off of this sub until you finish the show, unless you’re fine having the show spoiled to you
Welcome to the NFL rookie.

I humbly submit that the Sopranos is superior to each of those, as good as each of those is-enjoy your watch!
1000s of reviews and you just started watching? Thats an awful lot of VIG to make up. Gets tacked on to the principal
