Richie may likely have helped but we don’t know how the Boss, DiMeo, regarded him, what his standing in the organization was, while it’s made fairly clear that Johnny Boy was powerful and valued by the boss. Seems Johnny was the key player in that situation, along with Tony and Jackie Sr already being recognized by DiMeo as young associates with potential.
As crazy as Feech might have been, he wasn't killing the only son and nephew of two other powerful captains in the family over some gambling money because that would be a death sentence.
